Could be the best Mexican restaurant in Rockford, at least among those accessible for Americans. It's easy to find a lot of real authentic places around here, but this is among the best for families and groups. Mexico Clasico has the favorites such as margaritas, burritos, and tacos. Good prices on most items. There's also a few vegetarian friendly items with their own menu section. At lunch it wasn't that busy. It may get busier later. This place isn't that authentic but it certainly beats Taco Bell and whatever. Maybe about as authentic as it can get for American preferences. This is kind of like the Tex-Mex in style. Has all the favorites you can think of. The drinks, the food, all that stuff. It's about $6 for the House Margarita. This is made with gold tequila and Grand Marnier, good stuff. A lot of good vegetarian items. It's $12 for the Burrito Vegetariano. Big one. This is a rolled spinach tortilla filled with grilled mushrooms and onions, served with black beans, guacamole, lettuce, sour cream which I left off, tomatoes, and rice. Good value for all you get. I am thoroughly impressed. I've tried many Mexican restaurants in the area, and have always left disappointed--UNTIL NOW. We had a party of 6 adults and 4 teenagers. My husband got the fajita skillet and loved it enough to take leftovers home. He made juevos rancheros in the morning. As for me, I tested the waters with what I consider as staples--chile rellenos, rice and beans. You can usually tell a lot by the rice and beans, and I knew immediately this place was legit. I forgot to check for flan. Doh! The place is CLEAN too. We stayed until closing and they were mopping up--properly. And with Fabuloso to boot. Felt like I was back home in SoCal. The food was so good! We were sat right away and our waitress was really friendly. We ordered a few different dishes but the guacamole stole the show. They have a guacamole cart that comes to your table and you can watch them make it fresh. I've never seen anything like it. I ordered a combination plate with a carne asada taco and a tamale. We decided to try this place for dinner on Sat evening. We arrived around quarter to 6pm, the parking lot was getting full. When we got to the hostess, she said it would be 40 mins wait for a table for three. Luckily there were some seating at the bar area, so we found a high top. Shortly, we were met with a friendly staff to take our drink order. The menu has typical Mexican fair but also some more unique items under la Cocina de la Abuela such as parillada, which was a combination grilled meat served on a tabletop grill (portion for two). We opted for the following: - Tableside Guacamole: freshly made in front of you. It's flavorful with garlics, onions, cilantro, and jalapeños, and served on a stone bowl that it was prepared in. - Combination plate with enchilada and taco asada. The taco was prepared well and topped with cilantro and onion. - Combo Fajita: steak+ chicken with bell peppers and onion on a hot plate - La Abuela Fajita: combination meats (Steak, chicken, chorizo, and pork) with bell peppers and onions. The food was flavorful. Meats from fajita were tender. The rice and bean were delicious. Finally, the portion was very generous. The fajita was probably enough for two people! This is the "tacos de asada". I must have gotten a batch with unseasoned meat because I had to use all the salsa given to give these tacos flavor which is kind of ridiculous considering the price. I brought my mother and youngest son here for dinner last week. We've been here before and it's turning into a family favorite. Due to the location, during heavy traffic times it can be difficult to get in and out of the parking lot. Just keep that in mind when you go. The restaurant has a nice, festive decor. The seating is spacious, you're not sitting shoulder to shoulder with the next table or packed in so tight that you're constantly bumping into your neighbors... which seems to be a trend in so many restaurants. The entrance can get crowded if it is busy. The food here is really good. When we went I had the Enchiladas Suizas. My son had the Enchiladas Rancheras. Mom ordered the Chimichanga de Mariscos. I think the Enchiladas Suizas are some of the best Enchiladas in town. In fact if you like enchiladas and don't order them, you're doing yourself a disservice. My son loved his Enchiladas Rancheras... He think's they're the best, but he's a teenage boy. They think what ever they're eating is the best. My mother, who is not a fan of Mexican food, actually requested Mexico Clasico just so she could get the Chimichanga de Mariscos. We ran across the restaurant several years ago. We live about 70 miles south of Rockford. Every time we head to Rockford for dinner and shopping, we say we are going to try something different. However, we always seem to end up here! When you pull up to this place, it definitely looks like a hole in the wall. With over grown weeds and trash in the flower beds, seems like a big mistake. But once inside, it's an authentic Mexican restaurant. All the staff are very friendly. The margaritas are great. And the food is out of this world! Never had a bad experience or meal here yet. Mexico Classico is one of my top favorites for Mexican food in the area. The place can seat large groups inside. Get the cheese dip and tableside guacamole to go along with your complimentary chips and salsa. I have tried the steak tacos (amazing), the Fajitas and the Coctel de Camarones. All are worth trying! My Aunt's recommended that we get some ice cream and we ended up here lol afternoon snack kinda ;) I've never been here so my cousin said it was a good spot. We shared the ultimate nachos (2 platters really big one chicken and one beef), we also had margaritas with tequila not corona (it's better with tequila), and 2 fried ice creams. The restaurant is clean and bright with vibrant art work. The food tasted delicious, but the service was kinda slow. This restaurant does Not serve authentic food! I had the molcajete clasico and it came with beef, chicken, and chorizo. Half of the dish was a pool of grease probably from really cheap chorizo. My husband got a taco meal which was totally unseasoned. The guacamole they made in front of us was also a sad goop. No flavor and had some dry cheese topping. I wouldn't waste my money here. I really want to like this place as it's a local staple. Great margaritas. I ordered the cochinita pibil tacos which are described as pork with grilled pineapple and tomatillo salsa and I ordered without onion. They came out as standard unseasoned pork with a very spicy dark red sauce and still had the onions I had requested to be removed. Server was inattentive and did not come around to refill water and when I asked for a box I got one with greasy residue in it. The other time I have gone was similar, mediocre food and really slow service. Probably won't be back. read more

Went here with husband based on Yelp reviews. We were seated fairly quickly and did immediately notice that the restaurant is fairly large and they are practicing social distancing and mask wearing. Points for that. Food was as follows: Enchilada with red sauce: 2/5 The sauce tasted strangely like something out of a can and reminded me of something you would feed to kids, like a mexican spaghettio. It wasn't spicy, but was very bland and neither hubby nor I cared for it at all. Enchiladas were filled with ground beef and covered with some cheese. Very lacking. Taco with ground beef: 3.5/5 Again, good, but not great. They were served rolled up in tin foil on a home-made tortilla. The tortillas were good. Rice and beans 4/5 They were actually pretty good (not the best I've had), but not bad. The free chips and salsa were fresh and the salsa wasn't too spicy, which I like. Service was good, but was not blown away. I would say 3.5 / 5, but since I cannot do half points, it is what it is. Not sure it warrants a 4 rating. We love Mexican and have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants in different cities/ states, so I'm just being honest and comparing to other places I've eaten.
