Wrightwood is a ski town that mostly wasn't a ski town this winter. The mountain sat there, green and dry, collecting nothing, and the little village at its base did what mountain towns do in snowless years: it waited. The shops stayed open. The Raccoon Saloon poured drinks. The hikers came instead of the skiers, which is a different energy entirely -- quieter, soberer, less likely to require a boot dryer. You adjust. And you eat at Mexico Lindo, because Mexico Lindo is the kind of restaurant that every small California mountain town has, or should have, or once had before someone replaced it with a gastropub. You know this place. You've been eating at this place your entire life, in different buildings under different names in every town from Big Bear to Idyllwild to Tehachapi. The booths are deep. The menu is laminated and enormous -- four pages, maybe five, covering every permutation of tortilla, protein, cheese, and sauce that the Mexican-American restaurant tradition has produced over the past sixty years. Combo plates with rice and beans. Enchiladas. Burritos. Fajitas that arrive on a sizzling cast iron plate with the requisite theatrics of smoke and noise. A molcajete. A seafood section that the name promises and the menu delivers. A margarita list long enough to suggest that someone here takes tequila seriously, or at least takes the selling of it seriously, which for your purposes amounts to the same thing. This is not the Mexican food that gets written about. Nobody is driving up the 2 from La Cañada to evaluate the mole or compare the tortillas to what you'd find in Oaxaca or even Boyle Heights. That is not the assignment. The assignment, when you are in Wrightwood on a warm weekend that should have been cold, with hiking dust on your boots and nowhere to be, is to sit in a booth and eat a combo plate and drink a margarita and feel the particular comfort of food that isn't trying to impress you. Mexico Lindo is not trying to impress you. It is trying to feed you, which is a different and in some ways more generous ambition. The service is warm and unhurried. The portions are large. They brought a sombrero out for the birthday girl in our group, which is the kind of thing that would be corny if it weren't so obviously sincere, and sincerity is hard to fake when you're placing a giant hat on a stranger's head and getting the whole restaurant to sing. They have Mexican candy shots, which you should order because you are in a mountain town and the rules are different here. Every small town in California needs a Mexico Lindo. Most of them have one. This one is good at being what it is, and what it is -- comforting, familiar, unpretentious, the kind of place that's been copy-and-pasted across the state for decades with minor variations -- is enough. In a winter without snow, in a ski town running on hiking and hope, you could do a lot worse than a booth, a plate, and a margarita the size of your head. read more

Such poor service and bland food. The waitress made this one of the worst experiences I've had at a sit-down restaurant. I wasn't able to get her name, but she had an accent and her hair was dark and tied up. When asking questions about some food items she rudely dismissed us with an irritated tone. She didn't come to our table except to bring the food and give us napkins, then spent the rest of the time talking on calls on her iPhone. I witnessed her give a few other tables the same foul attitude, making me surprised they even tipped. This all happened within the first ten minutes of being seated. The waitress makes it seem as if the people keeping this place open (customers) are a problem. The only thing decent was the rice. Carne asada was sadly extremely bland and dry. The outdoor seating is nice amongst the trees. But please save your time, money, and experience and just eat at the Evergreen Cafe a few doors down. Not returning ever again. read more

We have been here several times and the food is always fresh and tasty. Not fancy or fusion type Mexican by any means as you may expect in a bigger city restaurant. They have all of the expected combinations and a pretty tasty chile verde. My husband is from Colorado and I feel like I should preface the green chile with "Californian". It's tomatillo style not like Colorado green chile with whole roasted chile. Tasty nonetheless and what I expected here. My kids enjoy the tacos and enchiladas and they have a good selection of beer and liquor for margaritas. There is also a kids menu with items such as chicken tenders if you are catering to kids who don't enjoy Mexican food yet but you do. Service is always friendly. There's indoor and outdoor seating so depending on the weather you can be in or out. It's a good people watching street in town if you sit outside. We got there pretty early and there was no waiters running up and down so we did have to go upstairs to let them know we were there. My family and I love this restaurant! When we came here last weekend, we did have a little of an awkward start. There wasn't any staff at the check in stand downstairs, so we came upstairs, and a server pointed to a table that we could sit at. However, it was about 10 mins before another server came over to give us menus and take our drink orders. After we got our menus and drink orders in, it was a lot smoother of an experience. To start, they bring chips and salsa to the table. We thought that the salsa was very flavorful and not too spicy. It's about a medium spice level. However, the chips were not very fresh. I considered ordering some guacamole for the table as well, but one of the waitresses told me that it is not made fresh. I appreciated her honesty, and then I did not order the guacamole. For the table, we ordered Carne Asada fries, super nachos, the fajitas with steak, chicken and shrimp and the cheese enchilada and chicken taco combo plate. I did not personally try the fries or nachos, but my family members cleaned their plates. I always consider that a good sign when I'm with picky eaters. I loved my cheese enchilada and taco plate- the portion size was big and the food was flavored and cooked well. The rice was very oniony and garlicky- I love when I can taste the fresh ingredients. The chicken in my taco was shredded and cooked in red chile sauce and little green chiles. I had a chance to try some carne asada and shrimp from my family member's plate and it was all so tender. I'll definitely be ordering that dish next time instead. One final thing- their prices are extremely fair here- all about $22 or less. read more

After taking our annual snow trip to Wrightwood, we decided to grab a quick meal here. The parking lot is on the open street and it was easy to find a spot in this tranquil neighborhood. We climbed up the wooden deck and was serviced right away by the host. The restrooms are located on the base of the deck, with there being single rooms for women and men. Upstairs are two separate areas of the restaurant, with many tables inside. Once inside, the air was heated warm and cozy, and we were seated in a booth. My family of 4 chose to share an order of the Asada Nachos and the Asada Quesadilla. Asada Nachos: The nachos were cheesy, saucy, and the chips were crunchy. The beans were warm underneath and chopped "ground beef-like" asada was layered on top. They were delicious. Asada Quesadilla: Stuffed very nicely, the quesadillas were my favorite with the cheese and meat filling. The cheese pull was super nice and the flavors tasted so well. It was super good, next time we come here we definitely would want to have another sit-down meal! read more

Stopped by here with some coworkers. Haven't been to Wrightwood before but my coworker recommended this place for Mexican food. The place itself is very unique as the construction gives off cabin vibes and your view is of the beautiful mountains and trees. I saw some reviews of snow here four months ago so I can't imagine how beautiful that will look like during the winter! Coincidentally arrived here on Taco Tuesday and they had a $2.50 for each deal! Tried their chicken and beef taco, nothing too fancy but they were definitely generous with the cheese. The best dinner we had here on our winter weekend getaway. We came here on a Sunday for early dinner at 5pm. We got seated right away and were given chips and salsa. I ordered the SHRIMP FAJITAS and my hubby got the CHEESE ENCHILADAS. Both dishes came with rice and beans. Mine came with guac and sour cream. My son had a hamburger and he devoured it right away with fries. They definitely do not skimp on the shrimp (see pic). The dishes were delicious and we got them right away! We were impressed by that. The service was outstanding. Our waiter always checked in on us so we hardly flagged anyone down which gave us more time to savor our food. Last Saturday the wifey and I made the twisting, labyrinthine drive up Highway 138 en route to Wrightwood and its small but popular ski resort, Mountain High to enjoy the sights and the bright snow. Our maiden trip up to Mountain High very nearly turned into a "mountain LOW" when our bladders came thisclose to bursting after failing to account for the one hour long parking lot, er, crawl of cars up the mountain! We finally pulled into Wrightwood's small downtown center and parked in front of Mexico Lindo Restaurant and dashed in. Alas, the downstairs entrance is apparently for an after-hours bar ... so we walked around aimlessly for a few seconds 'til we realized that the entrance to the actual RESTAURANT was two flights of stairs ABOVE the street-level bar! After placating our anguished bladders, we sat down for a late morning brunch, seeking to placate our stomachs. My wife chose an Enchilada Suiza then promptly pivoted and asked the waitress 3 or 4 minutes later to switch her order to the Red Snapper Special, one of the small, family-run restaurant's listed specialties. Kudos to the staff for accommodating my bride's last second change of heart! Leti loved her snapper, pronounced it fresh and delicious. I wish I could say the same for my order, a duo of chicken and shredded beef flautas, paired with rice and beans along with a starter bowl of Albondigas Soup. The starter was good! Titanic sized meatballs swimming in a broth of carrots, celery and onions. My issues lie with the lack of sour cream on my flautas- I'd them to keep the guacamole and bring me extra sour cream. Instead, I received approximately 2 tablespoons of crema...not enough to achieve the desired affect of lathering each bite of flauta with a little bit of unctuous, cooling tangy crema. Also, my rice was not fresh. It arrived a little hard and the beans were runny. Pro tip: Wear your thermals to the restroom, as it has no heating so the temperature can be downright arctic! read more

A tip for travelers: there's free Margarita (just 5 cents) for each customer coming on Tuesday! Of course we used this opportunity and comparing to other places, local margarita was really great. Actually all dishes are so delicious as well, they don't spare meat And portions are big! I've visited this place for the second time and I never can finish the meal On Tuesday it's so crowded because of that Margarita deal. At first I was going to rate it 4 stars for a long waiting. We were waiting for half an hour and waiters started to serve customers who came after us So this place isn't the best in busy hours, waiters have no idea what to do with that amount of visitors But besides all, this restaurant is worth visiting! read more

Okay, so, is it the best Mexican food and a secret gem tucked away in the mountains? No. But the service is attentive and speedy, the margaritas are strong, and it's at least decent food. The guac was tasty, salsa was fresh and homemade, the beans and rice were pretty good, but my chicken taco was SO bland. No seasoning or salsa, just a fried tortilla and shredded chicken. The tamale was very long, but thin, and covered in ranchero sauce. Not bland, not amazing. You won't go *wrong* coming here, but just expect decent Mexican and not the perfect SoCal Mexican food. read more

I'm sad to say our experience was awful. We were not notified that the restaurant was out of beans upon arriving or placing our order. Two people in our group are vegetarians and had ordered bean and cheese burritos and when the burritos came they were without beans and double rice. See my photos to see the sad looking burrito. Our server asked what could she do to make things better regarding the burritos. Our party with the bean and cheese burritos decided on cheese quesadillas with extra guacamole and when those were finally received after the rest of us had already eaten the quesadillas cheese was not even melted and they came without guacamole. Sadly two people in our group of seven did not get to eat. Additionally all of our entrees (7 guests) had cold double rice which we did not ask for and were not notified. The server was great and that is the only reason I am giving this place two stars. Thank you Celeste. She kept apologizing when it was obviously not her fault. My humble opinion is that, that should have been the manager coming over to let us know what was going on. Communication is key which this restaurant obviously does not have. From what I saw the manager was behind the bar area basically hanging out and letting Celeste deal with us regarding the no bean issue. We also over heard the customer next to us have the same issue. Just moved to Wrightwood from Washington DC in July. While walking around the village we noticed Mexico Lindo. We were hungry so we decided to try it out. I was amazed to see Albondigas Soup. I haven't had this soup in over 25 years, when I would get it when traveling to San Francisco for the Navy. I ordered it with a taco salad. Both were excellent, brought back happy memories. My husband got Seiete Mares ( 7 seafood soup) he loved it too. Waiters were so excited to see how I liked the soup they kept peeking to see. The restaurant was sparkling clean in all areas (and there are a lot). We've been back several times and gotten delivery. We can't recommend it enough. Too hungry to take Photos. I really hope the owner of this place will see this review asap. Today on Tuesday I drove for 2 hours to my favorite town Wrightwood. When we arrived we were starving. Decided to stop at this place. It looks cozy, nice... we loved pictures of the food on yelp. So, we decided to order some large margaritas and have some food. The server / manager in this place was absolutely disrespectful. Either he is a racist or just hates his job. He brought margaritas in the beer glass. I told him, I want a margarita in a margarita glass. He said I will have to wait to get the glass. I said, I will wait, we came to enjoy the place, to take pictures and to have the food. So, server L.R. (this person gave us the check an old Latin man) didn't come to us for 30 minutes to take a food order because he felt offended that I asked for a proper glass. He is definitely terrible for customer service environment. He could offer a smaller glass of margarita or an another drink, but no, this terrible server decided to ignore us. He took orders from people who came after us then I asked him loudly"Are you going to take our order?" And he just left. Local people who were sitting next to us and saw his disgusting and disrespectful attitude approached him and asked to take our order. Of course we left this place!!! Even though food and drinks looked great, but the service is disgusting!!! He should not be a manager or a server! He was absolutely rude!!! This place only exists to sell margaritas to skiers and we didn't try one, so I can review that, but my guess is it's not good. We ate here yesterday as it was our first time visiting Wrightwood to enjoy some snow, and the service was very good! The waiters were all very attentive at all times and kind. There was no wait time when we arrived so they sat us right away. The food was good! I got the cheese enchiladas with beans and rice and horchata, my fiancee got the steak plate with beans and rice, and we got our daughter the chicken stripes. Everything was delicious! Someone was celebrating a little kid birthday party and gave us a plate of cake, how thoughtful! I would give it 5 stars but my only concern was bathroom downstairs, it definitely needs some more attention. I went in to use it before we left to our car and there was no paper towels, the toilet bowl was very dirty, and it smelled unpleasant. Other than that, we enjoyed our dine in experience. read more

Wonderful vegan burrito, but had to take a star off unfortunately because I did find a piece of meat in it. I'm vegan mostly for dietary reasons, but if an animal-conscious vegan had this burrito and found a piece of meat in it, they would immediately not be able eat the rest because that tells them it's cross-contaminated. It looks like they have a very small kitchen, so I understand if things are prepared in close quarters to each other, but future fellow vegans would appreciate the extra precaution and care when preparing this dish. read more

We're local residents that came to try this place for the very first time. We have a legitimate service animal, but always stayed away from this place because we'd seen the large posted "NO DOGS" sign. It's usually a sign of militancy. We aren't confrontational people -- and understand, through gained experience, just how many businesses don't understand the laws and the distinctions between various types of service animals vs. emotional support animals. We came in the late evening when the restaurant was not busy at all, hoping for a relaxed experience. Our service animal was fully contained in a specialized backpack and wearing his identifying vest. We were seated by the bartender on the patio, but my elderly father quickly realized he would get cold, and so we were invited to go upstairs. We sat down, our new waiter came out and was quickly confrontational. He asked what the dog was trained for and I told him. He said, in broken english, the only dogs allowed are for "physical" "blind" "deaf." This is not the case at all. Service animals are trained for many purposes -- including detection of seizures, PTSD, autism, and diabetes. Our waiter's understanding was woefully outdated. And he did not want to see our SA ID, nor learn anything more. He just wanted to keep arguing. I asked the waiter to see the Manager. He told us the Manager wasn't here. And then wasn't willing to tell me the Manager's name -- after being asked repeatedly. My autistic father was getting so visibly disturbed and angry, I asked him if he wanted to leave. He did. I decided it was better for us to leave then get our food spat in or worse. I quickly took his picture because of how strange the interaction was. ** He then began to film me - with the flash on shining in my eyes ** As we descended the stairs, we stopped by the empty bar to ask the bartender, who originally seated us on the patio, who the Manager is. He looked confused. He told us our new waiter WAS the Manager. Not the owner, but the Manager. (Well, I hadn't asked for the owner... I asked for the Manager.) So he lied to our faces: The Manager, himself, did not want to be identified or asked to substantiate his assertion that the only real service dogs are "physical." I really gave this guy a chance to understand that service animals don't have to help the deaf or blind to serve a purpose allowable by the health department - a concern he kept repeating. Given this place has 5 recent health code violations, I understand why he must be concerned. Our advice to this business is - learn the laws (you really don't know them!) and stop turning away locals trying to support you! We will be filing a complaint with the appropriate parties, if we don't get some kind of appropriate follow up from Management within the next week. read more

We drive 2 hours to visit the area and eat here. Bad food. The rice was old, hard, and inedible. I ordered corn tortilla and the gave me flower. Fine... but they were hard, and stale. Camarones a la Diablo was G R E A S Y and oily, and I've been all through from El Salvador through all of Mexico and lived in Los Angeles most my life; I have Mexican and Puerto Rican family. Ain't nobody made them with what was clearly bbq sauce and red chili flakes. It was sad. Partner ordered two cheese dishes (enchilada and chili) and they weee equally drowned in oil, and sauce... so oily! I'd say the best part of the meal was the avocado, but it was warm and old too. They are always give me a hard time. Every time I show up with my little service dog / frenchy, that doesn't make a noise. She just lies on the floor under the table when I sit. 90% the time the waitress doesn't know the dog is there. Last time I went it was below 30 degrees and made me wait outside for 20 mins for a table ( had plenty open tables and no waiting) and was holding my dog because she was cold. Finally left. Love coming to this place! Staff are typically friendly and quick with service and the food is always delicious. They have a few locations but the one in Wrightwood is hands down the best location!
