OMG! I am so friggin pissed and disappointed! I have always supported all of our local restaurants, especially through COVID, but I WILL NEVER GO BACK to Mama Maria's Grill in Phelan (4208 Phelan Rd, Ste 4, Phelan, CA 92371) ever again! I really think that the food is good for the price (Minions' favorite) and the service that I have always received has been Awesome! But my opinion has totally changed after today......all because of the rude patron in the bar who was loudly parroting his supposed encounters with his "chick friends who were only good for how they serviced me." And before anyone comes at me for being a "Karin".....SHAME ON YOU for thinking that this type of behavior is okay! NOPE! And for those of you wondering/asking, "well did she say something before blasting them on social media?" Yes, I did! I approached this POS quietly, explaining and pointing out the elderly customers that were quickly exiting the restaurant area. I was told by this individual and his buddy that, "we are in the bar area so too bad!" I then asked if they could at least lower their voices since the restaurant and bar were in a shared space (BTW there was a family (with a 9 - 10 y/o little girl)) that turned around and walked out because of all of this! The food has gone downhill here. This was always my go to place but I will probably never go back. I think the last 6 times have been pretty bad but after the last experience I'm done. I had the ceviche and it was over 50% onions. I ended up picking most of them out. No kick to it and very little cilantro. Been coming to this restaurant for many years but the pandemic caused modification of our dining out habits. Revisited tonight after more than a year, we were greeted warmly by Pedro who remembered our drink preferences. More remarkably, he remembered our request for the special "off the menu" hot sauce. The food remains delicious and if you become a "local patron" you will not regret the experience. The margaritas are the bomb. Pedro offers personal attention to local patrons he gets to know. My boyfriend and his family brought me out to the high desert to go ATV riding over the weekend. His mom took us to Mama Maria's for lunch while we waited for the heat to die down a little. The restaurant was empty (they've moved their location a little down the street) so we grabbed a seat in a booth. Our server, Pedro, was super friendly and attentive. Their chips and salsa was really good. The chips were fresh and the salsa had a good kick to it. We ordered some guacamole to start. The guacamole is made fresh at your table and customized to your liking. It was delicious! For my meal, I ordered chicken flautas. They were great as well. Cheesy and crispy with fresh, moist, shredded chicken. My boyfriend ordered the molcate and loved it. It was a ton of food. His brother ordered a burrito that was literally the length of his arm, from his wrist to his elbow. All around the food was good and plenty! Nice little Mexican spot in the high desert. read more

On 8//12/18 two friends and I went in for lunch. One person had 2" square piece of paper in his taco salad. He was told it was from a tortilla wrapper. It had taken a long time for the food and he did not want to wait for another 20 minutes. He had to slowly eat rest of salad for fear of foreign object and left 1/3 of it. Then I sat and watched two employees take as maybe 100 straws out of the paper sheath, grabbed at the top with fingers, put in container and patted them down with with the palm of their hands. When I questioned them and told them this was against Health Dept. rules they said that they were told by Health Dept. that they could do this as long as they used hand sanitizer before handling straws. Seriously? I immediately took my straw out of glass to drink my water. Filthy practice. Waiter/manager said people like it the convenience of not having to take a sanitary straw out of the wrapper. way. Really? Will never eat there again. They had an excuse for everything and food was subpar. Next time I'm in the mood for Mexican I will go to Los Alanzanes in the Staters shopping center. We came in because it was "Taco Tuesday", which in Phelan apparently just means it's Tuesday. Only one place I know of here even recognizes it, and this isn't that place. I had the chicken fajitas for $13.95, which was pretty good for the generous portion, served on a sizzling cast iron platter. Comes with rice and beans and choice of flour or corn tortillas. Add a side salad or cup of soup for $1. The food was tasty, but not especially so. There are some things I will deduct a star for because it impacts the value. In this case, it raises it up from a solid 4 stars to 5 for value. I was tempted to try the shrimp fajitas for $14.95, but I try to eat with what is consistent with the region, and this is the high desert. Maybe next time, since we'll be back. read more

We decided to try a restaurant that was suggested to us through friends tonight, and I am so glad we did. Mama Maria's Grill will not disappoint! Great atmosphere, wonderful staff, and fabulous food. Cooked perfectly. I only gave it 4 stars because we have only been here once so far. The menu is extensive and I can't wait to try more. So far the chicken Fajita tacos and steak tacos, tamales were perfect. Spivey but not burn your mouth off spicy. Please give it a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

My girl and I love this restaurant. I would have to say this is probably the best Mexican food in the high desert. I know this is a little odd but I usually judge a Mexican restaurant on how good their refried beans are and Mama Maria's are the best I've ever had. Their molcajete is crazy delicious and so is the tostada grande with chicken fajitas as the meat. We usually share the molcajete because with the beans and rice on the side it's enough for two and it's reasonably priced. Their mariscos are phenomenal too whether it's a campechana, shrimp cocktail or shrimp ceviche. They always give you copious amounts of chips and salsa and they never skimp like other restaurants will. The owner Pedro is always welcoming and the rest of the staff is great too. This next message goes out to PEDRO... Buddy please, please put a sign at the bar that says "21 years of age and older"!!!! I'm sure I can speak for most of the cash paying adults that we want to relax and have a beer or a drink in peace. Children should be in the dining area because alcohol is served there too. Many times I've gone for a beer with my girlfriend and there's 2 strollers and kids screaming and running around making it a nightmare in the bar. I have nothing against children but they shouldn't be in the bar area, it's a bar not a preschool. Mama Maria's you might want to check what's legal and what's not. These are the current requirements. The Law Section 25665 of the California Alcoholic Beverage Control states that minors are not allowed to enter or remain within a bar. However, a minor is allowed to enter and remain inside "the restaurant" that happens to have a bar attached to it. Plus I think the responsibilities of a parent need to be questioned if they feel compelled to drink at a bar and then drive their children home. My children are grown now but I have enough sense that I never would have done such a thing. Put up the sign my friend and I'll give you the 5 stars your deserve. read more

My family and I came to this restaurant for a bite to eat. And just to get to the point of this review. I ordered the MACHO burrito among our other orders. Completely dissatisfied. Also ordered a regular burrito. The regular burrito had WAY more meat than the MACHO burrito. It was a price difference of about $2.50 more. For a lot less meat and a whole bunch more rice and lettuce. Honestly not worth it. Do not order the MACHO burrito. It had literally an amount of meat that I can count the pieces. So sad. The rest of the food was ok. But I got shorted big time. It was disappointing. So i can say i paid for a plate of rice lettuce pico de gallo and sour cream with enough meat maybe for a taco. There are other restaurants around i would rather give a try to before thinking of coming back here. Also we had a voucher for a free taco with any entree at regular price. No limit specified. We each had our own booklet we had bought $10.00 each. Only one taco was awarded. Literally it says..... "FREE TACO W/PURCHASE OF ANY REG. PRICE ENTREE" we paid for 4 reg priced entrees. He said oh it's one per table. So it's not one per entree like the voucher says. Good fishing technique. The more reason to stay away. They won't award their own vouchers. Not good not fair. I paid for these booklets to get the deals it offers. Well thanks for the service. Now after writing my review I feel stupid for leaving a tip. Worst service I ve experienced from a restaurant. We were served tea and coke immediately. Wait staff friendly enough. There were only 3 tables seated when we arrived and all three had been served. We ordered 3 tacos and a salad. 30 min later, no food. "Your food will be right out". 40 minutes later and a different wait staff, "your food will be right out". 50 minutes later, still no food. But they charged us 6 bucks for a coke and tea( which was old and cloudy, btw). Maybe their food is good, I ll never know.
