Reading the reviews, I'm thinking maybe it was just a bad day for the restaurant when I went? We were one of two tables in here on a Saturday night, it was hot inside, and smelled pretty bad. The food was over priced for what we got, the chips were clearly from a bag, and the quality was not good of anything we ordered. The server was very nice though. I went for the 1st time on Taco Tuesday. I liked the crispy chicken tacos. I thought the chicken was very tender. I wish these restaurants would all give more lettuce, there wasn't much at all. This food did not bother my acid reflux at all. It wasn't spicy if you like spicy. I thought the chips were too hard. I couldn't eat those. I'll be back on Taco Tuesday. Large space...we were greeted as soon as we entered. Since we were waiting on others asked where the restroom was. Restroom large and spacious for the most part clean. Did not like that there is No Hot Water when washing hands. Turned the hot water spicket nothing came out. Once I came out found out the men's room was not working so the men had to use the same restroom..I stood guard outside the door for one of the men in our group had to use the restroom. (Hmmmm) More of the people arrived and we were seated. The server allowed time for us to get settled then brought out chips & salsa. Well, to tell the truth the salsa really needed to be seasoned. I added a little salt, however it still tasted bland. We ordered beverages and a pitcher of margaritas. The margaritas were okay. Some in our party ordered other drinks (at the close found they were charged for extra drinks). A few of us ordered the same meal Fajita Tacos... my Tacos only had one with the fajita veggies and the others had either green pepper strips and one of the other onions not a mix on all three tacos. The steak tacos were tender and tasty. The chicken, although tasty was slightly dry. The rice and refried beans were extremely bland, literally no flavor so I added salt and salsa to try giving some flavor. Since it was a group event, maybe the kitchen felt rushed. Love Mexican and had lived in Des Plaines for a few years. This place is solid. Tried it for the first time and got the enchiladas. I would like a little more verde sauce but the flavor was good! I also tried a tamale, which was good but a little dry. It could use some sauce. I will definitely try here again! read more

So I came in through the back and the place seems echoey or cavernous. The decor is a Pepsi pink slash brown and deep red walls. There is no music just a tv playing somewhere randomly in the background. I came in on a Friday for lunch and discovered that none of the signs in the window were relevant as far as any drink specials at all. I have to say that this was pretty disappointing. I saw $2 or $3 beers and thought this is going to be good until I was able to get none of that. I asked the waitress for a lunch menu and she said this was it. I said ok and looked at it and saw entrees. So I asked again and she said that this was the always menu. That too rubbed me the wrong way. The atmosphere and pricing were impressive but not in the way that I think they want to make an impression. I asked if the burrito with cheese was better than without... like did it add any flavor and I was asked back if I liked cheese. So like... no help at all. The burrito itself had ground beef that was so finely ground it blended in with the refried beans. It didn't taste bad actually but if you're a texture person the ground beef may be a shock. Overall I was pretty underwhelmed with every aspect of the place. This town is seeing a bit of a renaissance and these guys better tune in or they won't be around long. I have only dined in once. I get a carry out order all the other times. I love their tacos. The chicken tacos not so much. I also pass on the corn wrapped tacos and opt for the flour. But the one treat I love is the chocolate chimichanga!!! I've never had nor heard of a chocolate chimichanga. If you are reading this and want to try something different, get it. Service was pretty slow and never got my friends drink order correct when she brought it to her. One salsa they brought was like water the other like fire. Yet another establishment I've found myself at for lunch. The chips they brought out were good, alongside warm mild salsa or a spicier salsa. I tried the enchiladas: one pork and one beef, and it was good but not great. The beans on my plate didn't look too appetizing though and I didn't touch that. The staff here is awesome! We walked up through the patio as they were closing early for some maintenance. After she offered to take a to go food order, we told her that we had just stopped in for a quick drink. This Mex restaurant is somewhat tucked away but has so much potential! Service here is super friendly and food is better than some of the other mex restaurants in the area. We've been here twice, and both times have been pretty vacant. The restaurant is clean but definitely outdated and can use a facelift. I've driven by a million times and always wondered what it was like in there. Well, I was pleasantly surprised! The food is good, not great, but good. I ordered chicken enchiladas and the red sauce was tasty, more sweet than anything else. The enchiladas, well they were bursting with chicken, there was just so much! My husband got steak enchiladas with a hot sauce and loved them. We also ordered a plate of nachos that were okay, but nothing spectacular. Their salsa that you get with the chips when you sit down is absolutely decicious too! The restaurant is family owned and operated, mom and dad work in the kitchen, adult daughters serve and the grandchildren bring the drinks and chips and stuff. This is the biggest bonus for me, when a whole family gets involved to make a business work! This is everything I think this country was founded on... and it doesn't hurt that the family is just really nice! I went here because a fellow Yelper told me there was a great Mexican place in the area according to Yelp and she wanted to try it. I figured I'd beat her to it and looked forward to another Mexican option in downtown Des Plaines besides Caliente (which is pretty good by the way). I should have trusted my instincts walking in through the doors. That stark, cafeteria ambiance everyone else has mentioned. I told my husband that I have a theory now- the quality of a restaurants salsa correlates with the quality of it's food. Great salsa usually precedes an amazing meal, because they care perhaps? Because the chips are just as much part of the meal and not just there to shut you up while you wait. Places with watery, bland, tomato soup for salsa tend to be mediocre- and looking back- I wish it had been. I ordered the Birria (goat meat in a "spicy" soup) and he ordered Chicken in Green Mole. When it arrived our hearts sank. His plate was disgusting to even look at. Mine was utterly bland, especially for something meant to be mildly spicy. For the first time ever, I thought to return our plates and walk out. I did not because I simply have never had to do that and quite frankly didn't know how to react, so we tried to eat what we could and make the best of it. After picking at it, I regretted that. It actually made me angry to spend money to go out and be served such terrible food. The rice, the beans, the chicken on his plate were all absolutely subpar. We will not be returning and I strongly suggest that others avoid this place. Yelpers who know me know I don't hand out one stars lightly, and I usually understand restaurants have "off-nights" but this was not burnt, or cold, it was not even mediocre. Food is better than decor and ambience. Prices are very good. :) Better than average service. Chilaquiles are above-average. Jamaican tea is basic but good & sweet. They offer full meals (Mexican steak, chicken breasts, etc.) but I always order singles- steak taco and two enchilada verde's. I eat here once a week. There is something to be said for having the owner and family working in the kitchen. They don't let anything that is not up to their standard leave the kitchen. Everything that I have had here is excellent. I love the chicken soup. Their soup will make anyone feel better. I regularly eat their tacos, tostadas, and enchiladas. Ask about the cop special. It's perfect. It makes me feel good to support a family restaurant. When you find a good place like this, you have to tell people. The decor is lacking, but the personality is here. The guacamole, freshly made for each order, is a little chunky and tastes delicious--easy to scoop up with their homemade chips. Everything on the menu is good, from the spicy salsa to the tacos to the enchildas to the cola in glass bottles. Oh god. This restaurant has been so pivotal in my life that it occupies the central position in all of my fond memories of weekend mornings growing up. "Mexico Restaurant" huevos rancheros, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. The sauce, so spicy. The tortillas, so warm. The beans, so chorizo-licious. The chips and salsa, so fresh and flavorful. By your standards, every other restaurant's huevos rancheros are a sad disappointment. The quality is so good, it makes the Folgers coffee they serve taste amazing. The staff is so friendly, I feel like I'm visiting their house. The service is so prompt, you can go in hungry and be full before you even realize you've sat down. If it's too late for breakfast (for you, that is - they serve breakfast all day), the tamales are also a reason to come for lunch or dinner: it's hard enough to find real tamales, and to find them this good is a real feat. Overall, the charm of this restaurant is really the authenticity and the earnestness with which they operate, and it certainly is the best downscale Mexican restaurant I know of. read more

This was a great place to stop and enjoy lunch. My mom and I went here based on the other Yelp reviews, and I can say we enjoyed it a lot. The only complaint I would make is that the guacamole could use a little bit more spice. However, we mixed in a little of the spicy salsa, and voila! It was perfect. We also tried the steak quesadilla with onions, steak taco, cheese enchilada, and chicken sope--all were delicious. My mom especially enjoyed the mole sauce with her enchilada. I was looking for a place I hadn't tried and found this on Yelp. I decided to go with Carryout. I had the Burrito Special ground beef. The Burrito was a good size. The meat was moist and had very good flavor. The salsa that was given to me wasn't very much, if I would have known I would have asked for extra. The rice and beans were OK. The rice was very tender and cooked just right, though it could have used a little more flavor. The beans were just the right texture and had pretty good flavor. The people were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is very clean and simple looking inside, but this should not stop you from going here. It looks like they recently expanded and put a banquet area in. There is a good amount of parking in the back. I will be returning and will have to eat in next time. read more

When I got in, the waitress asked me if I wanted to put my bike in their foyer since I didn't have a lock on it outside, which I thought was very nice. I ordered the chicken taco plate. 3 tacos ended up being too much food for me. The tacos were simple and good, although my corn tortillas ripped a little easier than I'd expect. Everything is fresh, the portions are huge, and the wait is short. I love the fact that they give you two different salsas to start with. A more mild one and a spicy one and they keep the chips coming! I usually get the enchiladas suizas and they are amazing. Three enchiladas with your choice of filling smothered with sauce and cheese! My mom always gets the torta and she raves about it the whole time. They also have daily specials where certain menu items are offered for a special price. If you go you must get the margaritas!
