Walked here from my hotel that was across the street. The area isn't the best at night, but was not an issue. Some locals said it's safe, others recommended not waking here. There was a decent amount of people traffic which was good. I got seated right away, chips before I even ordered. The salsa was very good and chips were good also. Decided on the carnitas plate, which is my go to across the various Mexican food places I go. The portions were great, the food was probably a 3-4 star but total package was 5. Staff was friendly and helpful, the salsa was really good, the food was hot (the plate was extremely hot too). The pork was just a little dry but tasted good with salsa and sour cream in a taco. Good tortillas as well. I only tried this spot for Mexican food in the area, but would go again if staying nearby. Mexican food is the best and Mexico food is even better. We've been here numerous times, but will be highlighting our favorites. We've always ordered the Shrimp and Crab enchiladas and the Chicken Yucatan. Both are delicious and bursting with flavors. The beef taco salad was something new I tried. I would have preferred the pieces to be cubed and not in strips. Their complimentary chips are alright, but they need to improve the salsa. It needs to be chunky. I always ask for their white sauce. After 12 hours of driving and nearly two weeks straight of seafood, my soul was screaming for a margarita and melted cheese--and Mexico Restaurant delivered like a hero in queso-covered armor. We rolled in around 9 PM, weary and hungry, and were thrilled to find this spot right across from our hotel and still open. We grabbed seats at the bar and were instantly greeted with menus and warm hospitality. The second we said "yes" to chips, salsa, queso, and ice water, it felt like it all magically appeared. We ordered the strawberry jalapeño margaritas, and while they took a few minutes, they were worth the wait. Sweet, spicy, refreshing--my kind of trifecta. I loved the heat, but my boyfriend? Let's just say he was channeling Alicia Keys because his lips were on fire. (Zero complaints from me--I could've taken even more spice.) Food-wise, it hit the spot. He got the chimichanga, which was perfectly portioned and flavorful. I went à la carte with a cheese quesadilla and a cheese enchilada. Like I said I needed some melted cheese in my life lol... The enchilada was just okay, but the quesadilla? Delicious--especially when dunked in their zesty salsa with a sneaky little kick. First and last time here. The positives- we were seated quickly and the waiter was nice. I think that's where it ends. The happy hour only includes a small lime margarita. Worst happy hour ever. The margaritas weren't very good, lots of mix. One of the people at my table had something mysterious and their drink-it was replaced. My arroz con pollo didn't come with any queso sauce or tortilla. The supreme steak nachos had zero toppings and nothing packed up separately. The tacos were just chicken - nothing anything else. It was supposed to be refried beans. There are 3 Mexican restaurants within a 2 mile radius on this end of town. We haven't tried Mexico in 20+ years so decided to get takeout order from them tonight as one of the other restaurants had a snake fall through the ceiling and the other one has consistency/quality issues. While my daughters appetizer cheese quesadilla and cheesy rice were ok, our chicken enchiladas and chicken burrito was extremely dry with hardly any green sauces or queso sauces on them. I wasn't expecting much from a restaurant right next to my airport hotel, but I was really pleasantly surprised. I ordered take out but when we went in the manager (I'm assuming) greeted us very kindly and you could tell he was on top of it. Our food came out hot and right on time and it was delicious! The portions were also huge which would be great for leftovers. I wish I wasn't just passing through or I could've stretched my meal out for 3 days of leftovers! Prices were wonderful too. The rice was so bland; you'd do a lot better getting a package of Mexican rice from the grocery store and using it. And the beans were just, meh. This restaurant is better than its sister restaurants. The staff is friendly and remembers you. They have an awesome selection of tequila, and I highly recommend the Cadillac margarita! It's made with love! As for the food, it's typical American Mexican but it's cooked right. The chicken isn't dried out, and the shrimp is cooked to perfection. I recommend most of their menu! I got stuck eating here with colleagues one night. I dreaded not having any vegan options, but Mexico Restaurant goes the extra mile and provides labeled vegetarian options (most of which can be made vegan easily enough). I got the Potato Taquitos ($9) and liked them---you can't go wrong with a fried tortilla stuffed with potatoes. I can't believe I haven't left a review for Mexico before. I have been coming to the Sandston location since I was a kid, at least 25 years. G at the bar/outdoor area is the absolute best, he feels like family at this point. He is part of the reason we are regulars at Mexico! You can't ask for faster or better service than Mexico! And all the food is amazing! I have a hard time deciding what to get most times I go. Some of my absolute favs: Steak taco salad (with the tortilla shell) #17 combination cheese enchilada/bean burrito Shrimp quesadilla (dinner menu) Arroz con Pollo w/ extra Queso Fish tacos w/ Spanish rice and refried beans Shrimp tacos w/ Spanish rice and refried beans (not fried shrimp, but still amazing!) I am from out of town and his was close to the hotel. The bar is a separate side than the main restaurants. I sat at the bar and was the only one on that side. I was promptly greeted with some warm fresh chips, white sauce and a small bottle of salsa to pour into a dish. I never ran out of salsa-great idea. It was spicy but not over the top and tasted fresh. I'm not a vegetarian but I ordered the burrito loco which has sautéed veggies inside and is topped with queso. The veggies were a bit soggy and I expected more cheese inside and on top but wasn't bad. I wouldn't get that again but I would try something else. The rice was fluffy and flavorful. In town for business and staying at a nearby hotel when I had a craving for Mexican food. It was not hard to spot this restaurant since the word, "Mexico" jumped out at me. Not sure what the creamy white dressing was since I don't eat it, but my colleague said it was good. I was surprised and happy to find they had veggie tacos on the menu. I ordered that minus cheese with a side of black beans. The order came fairly promptly which was great as we were devouring and filling up on chips. My tacos were very good; and, the black beans delicious. I would certainly go back the next time I am in town. So why the 4 star instead of 5 star, you say? Well, we felt rushed and even though I said no cheese, they put cheese on the black beans of all things. The server was in such a rush, I'm not sure if he completely heard me when I said, NO CHEESE although there was none on the tacos.
