I ate here with my partner shortly after arriving in Richmond, and I completely forgot about it. This gem is right off of Main St, and parking was easy to find on a Wednesday around 8 pm. The last time we came, I think we parked a half block away; this time, right near the door. We were seated immediately, and our server came over very quickly. The menus here are accessed via a QR code. Simply point the camera at it and click the link. Side note: Check if the QR code you are scanning is the original; check for stickers or overlays (it is rare, but it happens more than you would think). The chips and dips while you are waiting are great, but with that white sauce, they are very dangerous. I had eaten half of the chips before I knew it. The sauce, I want it on tap. We ordered the Tacos "Teta" and the Chicken Chimichanga entrees and had the Chengos (aka xengos = cream cheese, deep fried in a flaky shell with vanilla bean ice cream and whipped cream) for dessert. You are correct if you thought the dessert sounds delicious. It reminded me of a tastier cannoli (I like what I like, no apologies). The Teta tacos were fabulous, the sweet tamarindo sauce reminded me of a lighter BBQ sauce. The rice and beans were as expected, very warm, very tasty. I found the prices a tad higher than expected, but what isn't ridiculously expensive these days. Water, two entrees, and dessert with a 20% tip was ~$60. The staff were accommodating and polite, and the kitchen quickly fixed a miscommunication with the server, no questions asked. While staying nearby I walked here for donner one evening, coming in on a weeknight, they were moderately busy. I was immediately greeted by a server and I decided to sit at the bar. The folks taking care of me were all attentive and great. They have a nice menu, loaded with all the popular Mexican favs. I tried a skinny margarita and it was solid! Nice and flavorful, made with fresh ingredients and offering a decent amount of tequila in it. Their salsa was great! Very tasty and to spike it up a bit, I requested some of their spicy salsa, which resembled a habanero salsa, which I mixed with the regular salsa and this made for a very nice, spicy, and tasty salsa for their chips. For dinner, I asked my server what she preferred and she immediately said the fundido burrito, which I opted for. It came out piping hot with the queso sizzling on the platter for a couple of minutes after they sat it down in front of me. The food inside the burrito was great! We visited Chicano's Cocina Bar & Grill, and had a good experience here, thanks to Ernesto. He guided us through the menu, and we ended up trying some truly delicious dishes. First up, margarita time! The drunken margarita is a party in itself haha but both were refreshingly tasty! And then we had the Fiesta Appetizer, which was a sampler of the Texmex classics with a little bit of everything; the cheese quesadillas were our favorite. For our main course, we tried the Lalo's Grill Dinner. It had grilled chicken breast, tender sliced beef, and juicy grilled mushrooms. Topped with cheese with Spanish rice, beans, and tortillas. Super cheesy like we like it!! Cheese pull nation! We love a dessert situation so we finished off on a sweet note--the Tres Leches. It was really good. From the moment you hit the door, the customer service is absolutely top notch! Though the outside has the look, and is an older building, everything is neat and clean on the inside The food, chicken fajitas for me, was exceptional! Great presentation, full flavor and enough that I did not leave hungry - this is a rarity for me. The back rest on the booths is perfectly straight up and down, so not the most comfortable, so I would recommend asking for a table instead. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and the staff was so accommodating to make sure that we have more than enough space for all the people who were coming. Not only were all of our meals delicious, but the fresh chips, salsa, and white dip were reason enough to come to this restaurant. I loved my vegetarian fajitas and all my friends enjoyed the variety of tacos, quesadillas, and enchiladas available on the menu. The also have a bar with drink specials for each day of the week. Since it is located in downtown, I would give yourself extra time to find a parking spot. There are numerous street parking spots available for pay and a parking garage not too far away. It wasn't too crowded and the inside was pretty nice. We were seated quickly and given chips, salsa, and drinks! I love a spicy salsa so that was great. My entree was incredible! There were so many different vegetarian options, so for me, that was a huge plus. And they were all creative and came with a lot of food for the price. The portion sizes have gone way down. I'm talking barely a scoop of rice, a sad sprinkle of beans--honestly, I've gotten more food from a kid's meal. I paid $16 for something that didn't even look like it was worth $7. I spoke up and said, "Hey, this really doesn't look like a $15 plate," expecting at least some level of understanding or correction. Instead? I was told, point-blank, "Well, you can go look somewhere else." Excuse me? To make matters worse, the worker then turned to my coworker and agreed with her that the portion was small--after I walked away. So not only did he gaslight me while I was standing right there, but he also acknowledged the truth when he thought I wasn't listening. That's insulting and just plain bad customer service. And as if that wasn't enough, he randomly launched into a rant about how he's been making the same amount of money for six years. I'm sorry, but what does that have to do with the fact that the food I was served wasn't worth the money I paid? How is that my fault as a paying customer? In addition, drinks did take awhile since I think there was one bartender. I ordered a cocktail - La Guayabita and my boyfriend ordered the Strawberry Mojito which was also good. They were unfortunately out of the coconut mojito. We ordered an appetizer - Camerones Fundido and it was really good. There was a lot of shrimp and it tasted amazing. The restaurant wasn't busy but it took awhile for someone to take my order. The food arrived pretty quickly and was hot (I ordered the lunch fajitas). The food was just ok. I realize that I never got around to writing a review of Chicano's, but overall, I'm a fan. -- Food: When I first came here I hadn't been diagnosed with Celiac, so I tried a few different things including the tacos, quesadillas, and nachos. It wasn't super exciting, but it was pretty solid for a downtown lunch. I had become a little spoiled by some of the streetfood-esque taquerias in the West End, and perhaps comparing tacos to tacos isn't the way to go. Since being diagnosed with Celiac, I've learned to appreciate all of the menus that list what options are available for those intolerant or allergic to gluten, and I gotta say, there are a lot of options here! I recently tried the Carnitas lunch with Spanish rice, refired beans, and pico with corn tortillas, and it was really good! The nachos were good too. I got a side taquito which wasn't bad, but because it's unclear if these are fried alongside things that aren't safe for me, I'm not sure I'll get it again. I will absolutely get the Carnitas and other rice plates though! As a side note, the menu is enormous and has all sorts of traditional Mexican fare. So many options, and from what I can tell, they do take allergies seriously. (It's not a dedicated kitchen or fryer, but Mexican food is normally pretty clear cut on allergens and imo one of the easier cuisines for people with allergies to work with.) -- Cost: Probably the only thing holding back a 5 star for me is this. I'm not saying it's not necessarily worth the price, but the Carnitas lunch with a side taquito, post tax and everything, I believe was $17+. It's not a deal breaker and I could have ordered something cheaper, but it just felt a little on the higher side. -- Service / Atmosphere: I haven't dined in here recently (or anywhere since the pandemic started), but I do recall good service. Pickup was simple, staff was nice. --Overall: I'll definitely be adding Chicano's to my weekly rotation of downtown lunches while I'm work. The food is really pretty good for what it is, with the only thing being a little on the pricy side. Either way, I'm a fan and definitely recommend checking it out! read more

There always seems to be futbol (soccer) on a TV when i visit. I live right around the corner so have visited frequently and not been disappointed. We are staying at the Moxy nearby and needed food after being in the car for 11 hours...this place did not disappoint!! Ordered online and it was ready for pickup in 10 minutes. Order was correct and everything was AMAZING!!! I got the combo with a chicken quesadilla and a chicken enchilada, my husband got a combo with chicken taco, chicken burrito, and a ground beef taco. We both got rice and beans, and got a side of chips and salsa. Everything was so delicious! The salsa was extra amazing and super fresh and authentic. For someone from Southern California, it may be a little unfair for me to review a Mexican place, but here goes. So, the chips and salsa were really good. And the service was really attentive and friendly. We had some bowls of queso, but I think it was too runny. I ordered the Arroz con Mariscos and the grilled shrimp and scallops were properly cooked. The problem was that the sauce was also not thick enough, perhaps a recurring theme here. Also, the flavors could've been stronger than they were. The churros were really good.
