TL;DR: Kana Yajima's Smile Solutions Dental Center uses predatory practices and rough, careless…read moretreatment that harms your dental health. I had two bad experiences there, with dismissive care from the dentist and a hygienist who left my gums bleeding badly, seemingly on purpose, plus an expensive deep cleaning recommendation that by no means did I need. I am writing this review after having the worst dental experience of my life. I have never had issues at the dentist other than at Kana Yajima's office. I've now been there twice, and my god was it a mistake going back a second time. My first appointment was last summer, after I came home from college. The front desk staff aren't rude exactly, but they lack any positive facial expression and seem like they just want to get you out the door as fast as possible. Their English isn't the best either, and some of them are quite hard to hear. Kana Yajima herself was just as inconsiderate. During my first visit, she spoke to me once, never asked how I was doing, and spent the rest of the time talking to the hygienist and made me feel like I didn't exist. She spent less time on my teeth than any dentist I've ever had. My first experience with the dental hygienist was awful. I believe it was the same hygienist I had both times, and she is the rudest, most disrespectful person I've ever dealt with. I've had better care and treatment at a McDonald's. It almost seemed like she was untrained, or deliberately harsh on my gums, just to make me look bad in front of my mom by claiming I don't brush my teeth or take care of my gums. That couldn't be further from the truth. I have an optimal dental routine. I use a pressure sensitive electric toothbrush with soft bristles, brush twice a day, use an sls free sensodyne toothpaste, alcohol free mouthwash, and use a water flosser every night. I have no family history of periodontal disease. I'm outright stunned by how one could say I need to take care of my teeth better. Kana Yajima then recommended deep cleaning, which, given my gum health, I had absolutely no need for. Deep cleanings are meant for people with gum pockets greater than 4mm along with other symptoms of periodontitis. My gum pockets are below the 3mm mark and show minimal to no signs of periodontitis. I believe her deep clean recommendation is a predatory practice. I'm not sure if they assumed I was some naive college student who could convince my parents into paying for an expensive procedure I never needed. My visit earlier today was even worse. After the same dental hygienist harshly worked over my lower gums until they bled, I asked to go to the bathroom, but she made me stay so she could finish my upper gum line too. I recall moments when she was just blatantly using the ultrasonic scalers on my gum for seconds to make them bleed. I should have stood up for myself instead of letting her push me through the rest of the cleaning. When I finally got to the bathroom, I already expected some blood. Our gums are full of blood vessels, and mixed with saliva it always looks worse than it usually is. But even accounting for that, there is no reason a routine cleaning should cause that much bleeding. I've been to multiple dentists while moving around the country, and I have never had a service experience this bad in my life. Even when I was younger and my gum health wasn't as good as it is now, I've never had bleeding as bad as I had at Kana Yajima's office. Then, just like last time, the hygienist repeated over and over that I "need to brush my teeth" and "need to floss." She knows exactly what she's doing. How dare she insult me and attempt to make me look like the one in fault to my mom. I believe this office uses predatory practices on patients they think they can take advantage of. They may have seen me as a naive college student who doesn't take her health seriously, but they were wrong, and I'm begging you, please don't let them do this to you too. If your dental insurance covers another dental office near you, please go there instead. And if this happens to be the only office your insurance covers, it still isn't worth what Kana Yajima and her colleagues could do to your dental health. I discussed my issue with my medical student friends at John Hopkins University, and they agree with my views on this issue and condemn Kana Yajima's office. I promise you, as a random person on the internet, I care more about you than Kana Yajima and her employees ever will. To Kana Yajima and her employees, who I know will be seeing this, please choose love for fellow humans over the deadly sin of greed. God bless you.

I had a deep cleaning done in two parts this week. The first part was done on Monday and the second…read morepart was done today. The first part on Monday was traumatic for me, because the dentist that was doing the deep cleaning had trouble numbing me. He repeatedly walked out of the room to ask for help because I was in a lot of pain and could feel everything. To his credit, he was trying, and I appreciated his bedside manner, and his transparency throughout my entire visit. I overheard him talking to Dr. Yajima ( i saw her and recognized her voice) He must've left the room at least a good three times to ask her for help and yet she still didn't come into the room and numb me. I wish I was exaggerating when I say that he probably gave me more than 20 injections to try and keep me numb. I don't know why it wasn't working as well, but it would wear off after 15 to 20 minutes (his words, not mine). Today, when I went in for the left side of my mouth deep cleaning, I had Dr. Yajima Doing it. I tried to explain to her what was going on on Monday she ignored me and said she is trained. She's very good at her job. She knows what she's doing and she's going to numb me well. That didn't sit well with me because she just dismissed my concerns. Although she did a good job of numbing me, she had to repeatedly numb me. It wasn't as many shots like i had on Monday but She did have to numb me several times throughout the procedure. During the procedure, she told me I needed some Xanax to calm down and continued to chastise me for being nervous and anxious when she had to numb me. I did not like that at all that is not how you treat your patients. I am a nurse, and I would never treat my patience like that. Also, during my deep cleaning, she stopped twice to berate her staff, one being her dental assistant, and the other being the office manager Kellen over documenting something. She really stopped my deep cleaning to yell at two staff members over documenting something! She had this I am right you are wrong attitude and scowl on her face the entire time. It was incredibly unprofessional, and I did not like the toxicity in that environment. I do feel sorry for the staff having to deal with a bully for a boss. You can see on their faces that they are all afraid that she will fly off the handle and they will lose their jobs. She is very toxic and I didn't appreciate the Lack of bedside manner, unprofessionalism, and lack of compassion that I saw in that woman's eyes. Not only that but they charged me $28 for her to write a prescription for mouthwash. I kid you not. The office manager is great. Kellen has the professionalism, compassion and empathy that I wish Dr. Yajima had. I truly was not a fan of how she treated her staff and how she treated me. And if she was so good at her job then she should've assisted the other dentist on Monday when she saw that he was struggling.

With medical and dental visits, I find that the visit is always either wonderful or horrible. Hard to have an average experience. It turns out, my husband was right, and Dr. Goel was on the wonderful side. I've been to Avid Dental twice now and each visit has been pleasant, painless, efficient, and comfortable. The staff at Avid always greets me with a smile as soon as I walk in and I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes to be seen. They've been very accommodating any time I've had to reschedule an appointment or change the time last minute. Even better, they take evening appointments on certain days so I don't have to disrupt my work day. The hygienists are skilled and are great about getting me set in the room and taking my x-rays. Dr. Goel is clearly a dentist who knows her stuff. She's very thorough and really takes her time during her examination. You never feel rushed by her and she is always happy to answer any questions you might have. She offers so many services and really went out of her way to help me fix my smile through some filings and whitening treatments to get me ready for my wedding last month. My husband has had a few different types of services from Avid over the years and each one has always gone perfectly smooth. More importantly, Dr. Goel's friendly demeanor helps put you instantly at ease. She remembers you personally and you feel like she truly cares about your well being. This office is perfect for patients of all ages and teeth types - whether you're going just for a standard cleaning or if you need some heavy duty root canals, I would strongly recommend Avid for any dental scenario. The only tough part is making the trek out from downtown to Mt. Prospect (though there is an awesome Thai restaurant near the practice that makes me not really mind the drive at all). My husband works in that area so it's easy for him. But Dr. Goel mentioned she has a downtown location that is just 2 blocks from my office so I will be trying out that one soon.

Khan of "Epic Periodontics and Implants." Admittedly, I was skeptical but, went for a consultation. Dr. Khan explained in detail each quadrant of the care and cost of my dental needs. Quite pricey! When she was done, she asked if I was familiar with the "All on Four Implant" system. She went into great detail explaining this system, answered all of my questions and "calmed my fears." In comparing the cost of my necessary repairs and of the "All on Four Implants," it was a no-brainer! I was tired of my many trips to the dentist and made this choice. I feel I need to tell people that this choice is not a "quick-fix", it is a commitment. I had my usual dental-anxiety on surgery day and I am still amazed I had not a single bit of pain. I followed the after care medications to a tee and again, after a lot of prior experiences of terrible pain, I assure you I had none! You do, of course, have to wait through the healing process and are put in temporaries after surgery (same day) which appear as "real-teeth" so, no issues there. You are never "without teeth." Dr. Khan and staff walked me through every single step of my procedures. I knew what to expect and when. I was kept involved in shade choice and several other "tweaks." My phone calls were always returned and I was treated so well!! As I said, this is not a "quick-fix," it's a process and one well-worth having. A new, beautiful and shining smile was the result! So happy I found Dr. Khan and had this procedure--no more tooth pain ever for me!! My only regret is not meeting with her sooner to have this procedure!!
