Ugh SO GOOD - comforting, nutritious, portion size is abundant, price point is great. Salads and sandwiches are both super generous and filling in a way that makes you satisfied but not bogged down - the sandwich bread is also super moist, fresh, and tasty. I got half sandwich (Chicken Salad) and half salad (with Green Goddess dressing) - the portion size was definitely enough for leftovers. Personally wasn't a big fan of Chicken Salad or the Green Goddess dressing - the Chicken Salad didn't have much flavor and had as much mayo/cream as Tuna Salad usually does, and it was my fault that I didn't realize there's parsley/cilantro in Green Goddess dressing. But based on the variety and value alone, I will definitely be coming back - I'd love to give the Veggie Delight salad a try. Service was super quick too (albeit a little bit chaotic because there were a lot of people)! The only catch might be that a lot of the dine-in tables were dirty when I was there - I'd hope to see a bit more attention to wiping down the tables, but I get that the front was super busy with orders ... read more

Still 100% incredible, after all these years, and everything they've been through. Wonderful student employees, delicious moist bread, salads out of this orbit. I usually get the Vegue Delight salad or the bigger one with protein: my favorite, chicken salad. Either that or get the Combo with garden salad and a half chicken salad sandwich. Always poppy seed dressing. Nowadays, they have a place to sit in the back, but it tends to get a little loud sometimes. Five stars all the way - really fresh and delicious food here. I got the chef salad as take out with two toppings and I have been eating it for days here. This is a huge amount of food and it really is enough for two or three salads in the one meal they give you. It has lots of goodies - lettuce, beans, croutons, carrots, sprouts, tomatoes, cucumbers and lots of that - they are very generous and they give you avocado and an egg. Then you can add toppings to it - deli meat and cheese. It is fantastic and they have a bunch of dressings to choose from. The key to doing the take out and making it last is to get the dressing on the side and ask for an extra dressing. That way you can make your multiple meals from the one salad. This is amazingly fresh and delicious and I have literally been eating this salad for days. You cannot go wrong. Excellent value for the money. read more

Wow, HUGE portions for pretty cheap prices. It seems like every time I pass Mezzo there's a line out the door, so I had to try. Crazy amount of both indoor and patio seating, with a great overall ambiance. The service was professional, the workers seem pretty stressed but it's understandable because it was so busy. We both ordered the half sandwich half salad combination, where you can choose your bread and meat- we opted for the jalapeño cheddar sourdough and turkey. To be honest, the bread didn't taste like sourdough at all. I was a bit disappointed, it wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be and got pretty soggy at the bottom. But, overall this is pretty good bang for your buck. It's a well-balanced meal, and if you want you could definitely end up with leftovers. read more

As an alumna, eating at Mezzo after so many years made me very happy. Intermezzo's salad with poppyseed dressing was the salad that made me enjoy salads, and Mezzo continues to live up to the hype. I knocked off a star because the roast beef sandwich was hard to eat. Too much mustard and the meat had a tartness to it that I did not care for. The portion sizes are HUGE. For two people, I'd recommend ordering a full sandwich and a half salad-half soup combo. That way you can try more of the menu. read more

It's soft and thick with a hint of sweetness! It's perfection! The sandwich was good but it was a little dry. It needed more sauce. I'll be asking for more mayo and mustard next time or perhaps add a sauce they have on the menu. My friend got the chicken salad sandwich. I took a bite of it and that instantly became my favorite sandwich! It tasted amazing! It had great flavor and it was not dry at all! I will be getting that sandwich the next time I go back! The beef chili was absolutely delicious! It was hot in temperature and very flavorful. There were a lot of ingredients in the chili. Everything went well together. The salad offerings are simple though uninspired but fresh with an unusually large slab of bread. The pineapple is a nice touch but all three of our meals came with pieces too fibrous to eat. They still have the best poppyseed dressing in town. I also tried the green goddess dressing which was delicious. The basic garden salad is large and when combined with a half sandwich really can be shared with two people. They have the best honey wheat toast, a little sweet, soft, perfect texture. I already know I will be coming back here a lot for their huge portions of salads and sandwiches! I got the half sandwich half salad combo with the toss green salad (poppy seed dressing on the side) and marinated tofu sandwich with all the works. SO TASTY! The chipotle aioli sauce was amazing and the marinated tofu was flavored so well. They have a limited menu so make sure you are in the mood for a salad, soup, or sandwich. Lovely atmosphere and I can tell this place is frequented by the student population. Definitely get the poppyseed dressing on the side cause the salad is so big you will most likely be taking it home! Portion sizes are big which I appreciate so I can save it for another meal. I came here with a friend this summer - apologies for my delayed review, but they are still open! There was a line running outside the restaurant when I went, which is typical around lunchtime, but the line moved fast. I got a whole sandwich, marinated tofu with "the works", honey wheat bread, provolone, smokey chipotle aioli, and red onion, and also a mango agua fresca. The sandwich portions are huge so you get a lot for the money, comfortably enough for two meals if you don't eat large portions! It's pretty messy to eat, so I'd actually recommend using utensils; my sandwich started falling apart and dropping sauce and other veggies not long into eating. I hate the stringy bitter stuff they put inside though, not sure what it's called, but in the future I want that specific ingredient removed. But the tofu and aioli was yummy. The agua fresca tasted very natural and like real fruit and probably didn't have much added sugar. If you want really sweet agua fresca, you should get it somewhere else, but if you like the healthy feeling of a milder drink, then this would be a good fit. Back when I visited, some of the staff that take and prepare your order were not wearing masks - I assume this is because they were vaccinated and the state and county had relaxed guidelines, but wanted to give a heads up in case of COVID-19 concerns. read more

I ordered the herb vinaigrette on the salad (unless you're eating it there if you get the dressing tossed with the salad it'll be soggy after a while). When ordering a salad they give you a fresh slice of honey oat bread. OMG... YUM !! Also, placed an order for the BLTA sandwich. In my opinion both can be shared. Attached to Raleigh's pub, Mezzo does everything for your gastrointestinal system that a bar doesn't. They offer gigantic salads, large sandwiches, and soups, as well as assorted beverages like kombucha, mint lemonade, etc. The line can get pretty long during mealtime rushes, but it tends to move fairly quickly. There is some indoor seating, but you're also welcome to sit in the back patio, which is shared with Raleigh's. The portion sizes are generous. I like to get the chef salad with chicken salad as my protein and it's usually enough for two meals. It would likely last up to three meals, but it may get a bit soggy by that point. Inside the salad are garbanzo beans, kidney beans, half an avocado, a boiled egg, sliced tomatoes, croutons, alfalfa sprouts, a slice of pineapple, and greens. This is then pre-mixed with your dressing of choice, or you can ask for dressing on the side. You can also choose to remove some ingredients if you so choose. Since it's on telegraph street parking can be a little challenging but it's only a block away from the parking garage, which is free for the first hour. The perfect way to reset your GI system and, for those of us that need it, increase your fiber intake. read more

Can't believe that I hadn't tried this place sooner. Everything is prepared fresh so there's a bit of a line. We ordered a cup of the minestrone soup and the Berkeley special. You can choose any bread for the sandwich and we ended up going with the jalapeno cheddar. The breads tasted fresh, but still would've preferred a slight toasting to them. The sandwich was filled with lots of veggies and the soup also had lots of beans and veggies. Overall, I'd come back. There is a really nice seating area in the back where many students spent the afternoon working. The bathrooms were pretty dirty, but likely because the adjacent shop is a bar at night. read more

A long long time ago, I was in a band in San Francisco that occasionally played at Blake's across the street from this place (we're talking early 90s, for those of you who weren't born yet : D). We used to go grab dinner at this place before the shows, and I was so blown away by how good it was, I make an effort to stop by here every chance I can get to the East Bay. Whenever I eat here, I feel like I'm being WELL taken care of. They give you a HUGE salad in a nice big, roomy bowl, and you can also get a half sandwich or soup, without breaking the bank. PERFECT food options for starving students (or starving musicians) on a budget, who want to eat healthy, yummy food. And you can usually get lucky with parking within a block, if you're willing to drive around the block a couple of times. WELL worth the effort. I swear, if I won the lottery, I would try to open up a cafe just like this on the peninsula. I was really bummed when they had to close due to a fire, but ecstatic to hear they were able to re-open. The owners are providing a great service to people, by offering this healthy food (and the best, softest, yummiest bread ever). Definitely check them out if you haven't already! read more

Decided to try their sandwiches today and got their marinated tofu. The bread itself was delicious. My mom wants to actually buy a loaf of it in the near future. However, I found a bug in my sandwich which is why I docked down a few stars. I am also aware that the mask mandate has been changed, but with the delta variant on the rise, I think that workers should wear masks when they make the sandwich. There's often a bit of a line going and the workers take your order and make your food immediately, so it is a bit of a scramble and a little stressful since they're trying to keep the line going. It's very pretty and has a nice woodey/natural aesthetic going-- really cute for a lunch out with friends. Besides the quantity, the quality of the ingredients here is superb! Extremely fresh! The bread here is baked fresh daily, and the vegetables just pop in flavor and texture. The honey wheat bread served with a salad is very thickly cut, and lightly sweet. It goes very well with a savory salad. I usually get the poppyseed dressing, which is their homemade unique dressing; it's lightly creamy and very fresh. The tuna salad is my favorite protein to order with a sandwich or salad. Formerly known as Intermezzo, Mezzo, one of Berkeley's staples, dishes out gargantuan sandwiches and salads at unbelievable prices!! Even celebs the likes of Kehlani dine here (yes, really Kehlani), and after ordering a sammy, it's really no wonder why. Today, I ordered the roast beef on honey wheat which was accompanied with a thick slab of sweet pineapple. I find wheat bread to be subpar due to its grainier, grittier texture, but Mezzo's is to die for. Their honey wheat is vaguely sweet, extremely pillowy, and the perfect carb vessel to store the abundance of sandwich insides. The crust is also topped with sunflower seeds which adds a nice crunchy contrast to soft interior. I guess what I'm trying to say is... the bread is heavenly and a must-get even for ardent wheat-bread-haters like myself. The vegetables and meats are always super fresh as well! Do keep in mind that Mezzo's portions are for Olympic swimmers, and can keep you fed for two meals. For the colossal sandwich, I paid a little under $16 which is well worth it considering a foot-long at Subway is around $12 for vastly underwhelming and questionable ingredients. Mezzo always hits for me, and I'll definitely be back to try their baked goods as well. Sometimes quantity doesn't mean quality but it's safe to say this place is both. I had the Veggie Delight, egg on the side; my date had the Tossed Green and finished off whatever I couldn't finish. It was the perfect amount of food and some bread leftover. I wonder if they could toast the bread upon request? That would have been amazing. I suppose I could ask next time. I ordered the yogurt green goddess dressing, which they mixed into the salad thoroughly. It turned out to have an unpleasant taste of hot pepper which wasn't in the description. Mezzo at breakfast is a little less exciting. The breakfast burrito is a choose your own adventure, write what fillings you want and turn it in to the kitchen. I wouldn't recommend this to any vegetarians as the vegetables make the burrito kind of soggy. They throw the vegetables in either totally fresh or frozen, would be better if they were roasted or smoked first. You can choose between savory or sweet loaded toast for breakfast. The strawberry banana toast was good! Not too sweet but also not too filling. Cleanliness: The bathrooms at Mezzo are THE MOST DISGUSTING bathrooms in the city. I've gone in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening and it always looks like it has been a week since its last cleaning. Washing my hands here literally makes me feel dirtier. The tables are fine, sometimes it takes long for them to get cleaned but I get it, it's a really busy restaurant. Ambiance: Nice! So so delicious and fresh. However, it is an absolute nightmare for anyone with allergies. There is so much cross contamination - I have never seen any employee change gloves, and they just use a rag to clean the countertop between orders sometimes. I used to eat here all the time in college and it was a favorite but now having been diagnosed with celiac I will never go back. A shame because that honey wheat bread is incredible. read more
