This is usually the spot we take our friends when they want to get dressed up and "go out" in downtown Middletown. Decent dance floor upstairs. Usually filled with minglin' singles but sometimes overtaken by weirdos. There was a tiki bar outside that caught fire last year, so now it's a regular outdoor bar area with a patio and a stage for live musicians. No more straw hut. Also a big bar inside with a decent craft beer selection. No happy hour specials, which kind of stinks since it says otherwise on the website. Had a chance tonight to finally sample the food. It was BOGO Tuesday, so one of our two entrees was free. This deal goes until 10pm, and our wallets were happy. I got a NY Strip Steak which came topped with mushrooms and onion rings. The sauce was delicious but the steak was a bit dry. Girlfriend got the Shrimp Campellini, which I wouldn't recommend; virtually no taste and overloaded with raw onions and huge chunks of roasted garlic. Meal came with a salad which was great. It was mixed with pecans, feta cheese, mandarins, and a house vinaigrette; very fresh. Also got bread which was the opposite of fresh. Service was extremely slow but the waiter was nice and we were in no rush. Will be back for the nightlife and not the eats. The food here is great and it's a very spacious place. The service needs improvement as I am always trying to find the waitress to get the check. The only other negative which has nothing to do with food or service is the noise level. If there's a rowdy crowd in the bar or even just one loud person, the sound is amplified throughout the room which makes conversation difficult. We stumpled upon this place the other night. They had live music outback so we turned in. We enjoyed the atmosphere and had a nice night. We decided to go for lunch the next day. I did have to wait for over 15 minutes as the sign read please wait to be seated. I decided to seat myself. Once doing that our server was attentive. I had the salad with a crab cake which was wonderful. We both had a martini which was quite tasty.The lunch specials are a great deal. Usually around 6 or 7 dollars and come with a salad. read more

Outside bar and bar service gets 5 stars. Inside bar and bar service gets negative infinity stars. I'm blown away by how terrible the service was. It felt like I was on the show Punk'd, but instead of Ashton Kutcher jumping out from backstage... I got my hamburger literally 58 minutes after I sat down. I verified by checking the time stamps on my phone. That came 30 minutes after the bartender told us "Your food is coming up next." I like burgers- I don't like being lied to. We were never given an apology and it took us asking twice to get our tab. It only took 25 minutes from the time that we asked for our tab until I signed "0" on the tip line. I wasn't offered bread or a refill on my water (DD, tonight). My roommate ordered two drinks and neither of them were comped. We didn't have a manager say anything to us or even acknowledge our existence. I will never be going back to this spot and I will make sure that every single other Wesleyan student I know never comes here, either. Went there last night for dinner. My wife was expecting to have a dish she had the on a couple of other occasions. She said it was great. Come to find out, they revamped the whole menu. What she wanted was no longer on the menu so we just decided on other things. Started with wings, actually not bad but not great. My wife had Italian wedding soup, it was awful!! It tasted like bay leaves and nothing else. The she ordered The Adult Grilled Cheese, said it tasted way too salty and a side of fries for $2.50?? I ordered the Short Rib Sliders and they were so bland!!! I ate 2 and took the last one home so I could add flavor to it. Will not be going back.. We had a groupon for 30.00 (which cost as little over 15.00). We sat at the bar, that for most of the time had NO OTHER customers till 1 other patron sat down. We got 2 apps and 2 drinks. We never saw the actual bill, but were given a final bill of just over $8.00... we left 14.00 (almost 6.00 tip) 15% of 38.00 is $5.70.. and in actuality we were not done figuring out the total we both needed to put in and were in the process of pulling out more $ when she came over and started counting the money.. Coming from a person in their early twenties it is great night life for young adults like early to mid twenties. Djs play late night on weekends. Good amount of people dancing out on the patio on summer nights. Be aware the cover fee starts when the dj starts usually around 10 and increases like $5 every hour after that. On behalf of the people who were waiting with me in line 25 mins plus and got denied entry (even though people were leaving), do not attempt to party there after midnight 'cause they will decide to refuse ALL customers at any given time (to be exact, precisely around 12:30am). My experience with Mezzo is limited to afternoon happy hours and really it is a 3.5 star experience for that. The happy hour deals are pretty good with $3 drafts and $5 wines and appetizers all week long. However, happy hour is a pretty quiet affair and the only time it has gotten too busy there is when we have a lot of people from work. The food is okay with some creativity but ultimately it is just bar food. The draft beer selection is solid with about two or three dozen beers on tap. However, the menu is on a scrolling board and the paper menus are not kept up to date so it is difficult to tell what is available. The bar tenders seem overwhelmed even when the place is pretty quiet so the service is not the snappiest. For weekday afternoons, it is quiet but pleasant. Don't expect the best service. Also, I cannot figure out the parking situation. Maybe I am a dunce. There is a garage across the street that is $1/hr which is fine but there is also parking on main street which is free after 6pm. Overall it is fine for a reliably standard happy hour. read more

I really want to like this place, I truly do. Their food is good. They have unique pizza that are delicious. But their beer on tap is sub-pare. Their selection of local on tap beer is very limited and none of them are are worth the time and effort to get them, and I mean time. The absolute worst part about Mezzo is the ridiculous amount of time it takes... to be seated... to be waited on... to get your order taken (if they even remember to come back to the table at all, this happened 2 twice to me). Last time my friend and I went we were looking at a 40 minute wait. Knowing this I went to the bar to grab a bar while we wait, easier said then done. While standing at the bar, there was no one working the bar. In the mean time, one waitress went behind the bar twice ignoring several customers and myself, she didn't even make eye contact with most of us. There were 2 other waitresses struggling with the register, which that employee also ignored. After seeing this disrespect for not only customer but fellow employees, we left. The food here can be hit or miss.. I've had food that was amazing and food that was nothing short of BLAH. They have a good calamari and I really like their Mezzo Salad. Portions tend to be on the smaller side and overall a little pricey for what you get. Typically, we go here for the bar scene. In nice weather, the back patio area makes this place! They have tons of seating, fire pits, an additional bar, and a stage for live music. Even throughout the winter, Mezzo is very busy Thurs-Sund nights. While the crowd has a good mix, I'd say it leans in the direction of mid 20's to 30's . Drinks, a little expensive.. Overall a fun place! read more

Ok, so I'm already kicking myself in the ass because I said I would never eat here... oh well, here goes. MLB All Star game, a couple good friends and i wind up at Mezzo's after work. Seeing as how the power went out at my home, i decided to go get a hair cut and then ended up here not having eaten anything since breakfast. I saddle up to the bar with my buddies, whom have already eaten, and i order the rib-eye w/ polenta. I order a Bud Light Lime, $4 (the bartender tells me there are no drink specials). $4 is down $2 from last time, but no drink specials on a tuesday night is still a little off putting. Cmon, even the big chains have drink specials mid-week. So I'm about 3 beers in, garlic bread & my salad arrives, its small, but tasty, candied walnuts & goat cheese go amazingly well with bud light. I ordered my steak medium rare, however it came out more on the medium side. It was flavorful and tender, but the most amazing thing on the plate was the polenta. It had bacon in it so it has this wonderful smoky flavor that pairs well with the steak. Oh, can't forget the side of pequillo pepper relish that i used as a steak sauce... it was yummy too. BOGO on tuesday nights means i got to bring home chicken alfredo for my daughter without spending extra. All said and done I had 5 beers, a wonderful dinner, and take out for my daughter for about $40. It's been one of the best meals i've had in Middletown, kudos to Mezzo for turning things around. read more

I'm making a list as we eat ... Walked in and asked to be seated on the patio. It's dumpy. A very loud Vegas-style lounge singer was playing. Too chilly outside, so we moved inside. Tried to use one of the bathrooms. No TP. Went to another. Not too clean, and the door opens right into the bar where a bunch of men were gathered. Sat at the table. Waitress came to take order. Didn't know anything about the beers. Hubby got a sample. I ordered hard lemonade with Grey Goose, which the menu said I could get in a flavor. No dice. I was served lemonade with Stoli instead. Waited quite a while for her to come back. Hubby still hasn't placed beer order. She finally came back. I ordered salmon and asked to swap rice for potatoes. She said she thought there would be an up-charge of "like $2 or something; I'm not sure." Oy, the lounge singer just moved inside and is serenading. Ugh. Food was ok. Good, but non-descript. Hubby had a burger and thought it was good. Portions were large. Service got a little better once we were beyond the drinks. 2 stars because of the experience. Food is 3. read more

I do like they have a patio out in the back, but it seemed like the restaurant just opened, therefore we just decided to stay inside. Mezzo will forever have a special place in my heart. My husband and I had the privilege of having our wedding this past July at Mezzo, and it was amazing. Over a hundred of my closest friends and family, and a mix of strangers who happened to be having dinner that night witnessed one of the best days of my life. The staff and kitchen did absolutely everything to accommodate us. Chris went out of his way to make sure we had the exact food we wanted, open bar and location. Music was on point, all my guests had an incredible time and still talk about that night. Everything came together to the T and my wedding at Mezzo could not have been more perfect. With only 3 weeks notice, this restaurant made miracles happen. There will always be a special place in my heart for this place. Always a good time and great food and music. Celebrated a recent birthday for my best girlfriend this past Wednesday. Our intention was to spend the night at the backyard beach of Eli cannon's, but quickly found ourselves on the move after the bar situation proved to be a royal hassle. I'm sorry- but if your backyard is full of people, the bar should be open. 'Nough said. We moved on to mezzo grille. I'd never been, but my girlfriends had, and had good things to say. Well, now i do, too. This place was awesome. First of all, there's public parking directly across the street. The lot, like the meters, stops charging at 6, i believe. The interior was wide open, and a bit industrial looking. There's a long bar and plenty of seating. Then there's outside- kind of a courtyard with big, long tables and a stage. They have live music on the regular, and the guitarist that night was pretty good. He even acquiesced to our request for him to sing happy birthday to my girlfriend. I know- totally cheesy, but it was that kind of night. Beyond the 'courtyard' is an elevated outdoor bar. That's where we ended up and experienced some of the most professional and proficient bar service i've experienced. Let's face it: female guests are tough. We're particular, we want everything on the side, just so, and this girl didn't bat an eyelash ( and she had a full bar...). The atmosphere and service outside were great, but the food was good, too. As the soup queen (i love it!), i ordered their soup of the day, a chicken-bacon-broth-veg concoction that was seriously delicious and obviously homemade. My girls ordered the fried mozzarella which, instead of coming in strips, was one big ball- i liked the differentiation from the expected. They also had some spicy thai shrimp that disappeared fast, and not because it was a small portion. I got the roasted portabella app, which was kind of disappointing, probably because i also got the tempura portabella fries which were truly out of this world. They were firm, the batter consistent, and served with a delish remoulade-esque sauce. I also have to say that the size of the app vs. the quantity of fries (for almost the same price) was too small. The rest of the menu is a twist on italian and american classics. From what i've experienced, the kitchen is definitely on point. I'm looking forward to going back and experiencing more of the menu. They also have some specials- i think bogo entrees on tuesdays, but check out their website to be sure. There's also a 'dancy club' area situated on the 2nd floor. Don't know anything, except that it's there. At any rate, i can't say enough good things about this place. Go, and sit outside before the weather turns. I hope you have a great time, like i did. The patio/tiki looked great. The TV setup behind the bar was amazing and huge (Several tvs placed together to get a larger image), and the inside was spacious and looked great. The prices were great and I don't have a whole lot of complaints. I'm very close to bumping this up to a four star rating as I write this; however, the service was pretty lousy. The bar manager was no where to be found when it came to needing service but instead was chain smoking right outside of the kitchen, where food is being brought in and out. He then proceeded to not wash his hands and think it's acceptable to serve a drink while adding fruit. You would think during a pandemic there would be a little more cleanliness. I also ordered a $5 slice of pizza for it to come out cold. When informing the bar manager he stated, "Really, it was cold? That's weird" and proceeded to walk away. With the exception of the pleasantness of our server's replacement and the food being so-so, this experience was AWFUL. I was with a party of 5. Our server - a blonde chick with a SERIOUS attitude problem - had much more important things to do than check in with us, take a drink order, or anything else that would place her near our table. We waited at least 30 minutes before she made her first appearance. The average wait from from the placement of the drink order and receipt of the drink was at least 15 minutes. Eventually she took our food order. We ordered at 8pm. At 9:15pm our food was served. Without silverware or napkins. In the hour and 15 minutes blondey visited our table once. When we inquired as to why it was taking so long she said "oh....yeah....they said it would be a few more minutes." She walked away from our table without take another drink order from our entire party. She only asked 2 of the 5...my friend had to flag her down to place her order and the server was visibly put out that she had to do her job. FINALLY our food arrived. One of us had a burger ordered "well done" and it was RAW. Seems that cooking it for over an hour would have taken care of that! My friend - the one who inconvenienced the server by asking for a drink - physically walked around the restaurant to find the server so the burger problem could be fixed. Even after the server was told that it needed to be cooked, she still took her time making her way to the table. She was too busy chatting with co-workers at the hostess station. At this point, one of us spoke with the owner and requested that the blonde girl NOT return to our table. Enter the pleasant waitress. :) We decided to have one more drink. When my glass of wine arrived with something floating in it, I was all set. Our check came and not a single item was comped - including the RAW burger!!! The response when questioning whether the check was right, the response was "Do you want me to comp the burger? Is that what you're getting at?" Seriously awful experience. Terrible! Went there tonight as a party of four. Probably one of the worst service we have ever received. 1. It took 15 minutes for our happy hour drinks to arrive. 2. When we ended up getting our first drink we immediately ordered another at 7:02 pm and complained about how long it took. We asked if we can get another happy hour drink and she said no without apologizing for being 15 min late. 3. Didn't bring waters to the table for at least 20 min and we had to ask her again for the waters. 4. The salad came with the meals instead of before the meal arrived.5. One of our entrees arrived very late after we were all done with our meals. Food wasn't bad. A very good musician! We can't go back because of the really bad service! read more

The saving grace of Mezzo is it's martini list and cute college waiters. I opted for the Pre-fix of Middlesex which offers an appetizer, main dish and dessert. I got the Thai-chili shrimp, and the waffle and chicken for my main meal. I was surprised when I tried to cut into the chicken breast and met resistance. It was rock hard on one side. I was confused and immediately wondered if the hardness came from a bone in it. But no, it was some weird reaction of re-heating or weird storage. I asked my waiter about a possible bone, and he said there wasn't one, and he offered to take it back. I didn't feel like pressing the issue. I think if you have a kitchen that allows something to be served as this piece of abnormally hard chicken was, then there are probably bigger issues. read more

The problem with living near Middletown is that there are too many good places to eat. Mind you, it's a nice problem to have. It does mean that, even after I'd put it on my mental to-do list, it took a while to get to the Mezzo Grille. The menu features classic Italian cuisine, favoring northern styles over Neapolitan. My daughter had a garden stir fry, combining a number of vegetables with a lemon and garlic sauce. I had veal piccata, which was nicely done. It had a pretty strong lemon flavor and as many capers as I've ever seen in a piccata. It worked for my taste, but others might prefer it milder. The wine menu's description worked really well for me, and helped me choose a wine that just hit the spot for me that night. Our server was helpful throughout, and the feel of the restaurant on a Tuesday night is quiet and comfortable. It was also quite nice to discover that entrees are two for one on Tuesday night, which was certainly incentive to return! read more

Service here is terribly slow so don't bother ordering food or drinks from the waitstaff, just head to the bar. Ordered a Chopped Greek Salad (large) and I got what appeared to be a Caesar salad (no olives); it in fact was their Greek salad. Terrible! Drenched in a nasty cream dressing and nothing Greek about it. My husband ordered pasta, "Broccoli Rabe in the Pink" (vegetarian). This was delicious but for $15 and no meat, you'd expect a serving size bigger than roughly half a cup. Well, you'd be wrong. Come here for the outdoor setting and people watching (very strange and eclectic crowd) and not the food. Drinks are pricey too. I won't be back. read more

Mezzos is a great place to enjoy a Friday/Saturday night out on the patio during the spring and summer season. I have visited this location many times since turning 21 (approximately 2 summers). Unfortunately even though the location is awesome, drinks are great, and staff is friendly; the outdoor DJ that plays on the patio remixes almost every original song into techno that has no rhythm. Many young people like myself find it very hard to dance and enjoy this kind of music. It is similar to college house music, electric dance music played at raves. The upstairs DJ is ALWAYS much better than outside and my suggestion would be to switch these DJs so that the outdoor patio can be enjoyable again like it was 2 years ago when I first came to mezzos. read more
