We contacted MG Plumbing due to a gas smell coming from our water heater when it was in use, which is a serious safety concern. Before the appointment, my husband explained the issue in detail and sent photos of the make and model of the unit. When Mark arrived, he looked at the unit and said he needed to contact the manufacturer and would follow up on Monday. We never received that follow-up. There were no missed calls, no voicemail, and no text message. My husband does not block unknown numbers and must answer all calls for work, so there is no record of any attempt to contact us. During this time, we were also dealing with our son unexpectedly needing surgery, which delayed us from calling back sooner. Prior to MG Plumbing's visit, we had already contacted PG&E when we first noticed the gas smell. PG&E did not detect a gas leak, even while running hot water to try to reproduce the issue. Out of caution, we have been turning the gas off when the unit is not in use. The smell appears to occur only when hot water is used in our children's bathroom. When we finally followed up later in the week, we were informed that Mark is not certified to work on Rinnai units, which prevented him from getting information from the manufacturer. Given the safety concern involved, this should have been clearly communicated sooner. Due to the lack of follow-up and communication, we had to start over with a certified plumber. I feel very lucky to have found him. Mark from MG Plumbing installed our new Moen shutoff valve and did an outstanding job from start to finish. San Jose Water recently upgraded our neighborhood to smart meters, but their system does not provide anything close to real time usage data. I previously relied on a Flume device to monitor our water use, but it no longer works with the new meters. Through my insurance company I learned about the Moen shutoff valve, which reads water flow directly in line rather than through vibration. It was the perfect solution, but it required professional installation. Mark came out, reviewed the layout of our water system, and immediately impressed me with his approach. I knew the installation would require some rework to bring both the house supply and irrigation system together so the Moen could monitor everything. I expected extra parts and added costs. Instead, Mark evaluated the entire setup and found a way to reuse all of our existing equipment, including the shutoff valve and pressure regulator. By routing everything to one side and working with the existing layout, he kept the cost far lower than I expected. Most plumbers would have simply added new parts because that is easier than taking time to map everything and redesign the path. His workmanship was clean, efficient, and thoughtful. He clearly cared about doing the job the right way, not the most expensive way. It is rare to find someone who prioritizes the most affordable solution for the customer without sacrificing quality.
