Stopped for lunch on our way to hike the Sahalie/Koosah Falls Loop Trail. I ordered a burger and brew. My wife ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. Our order came out quickly (we were one of the first people there at 11:30 and by the time we left, it was starting to get busy). My burger was excellent. I added fries (which I shared with my wife) as well as cheese and bacon. Could barely fit it in my mouth. Normally we would split, but since we were hiking, thought we wouldn't. I ate it all. Happily. My wife's grilled cheese was also excellent. Came with bacon and pesto as well as a significant amount of avocado. Oh, and, of course cheese. She loved it. We ate out on the back patio and sat in the sun. It was a beautiful day and a great start to our hike. Definitely recommend! read more

I wanted to love this place. They have high quality, upscale snacks in their case and on their shelves, and the menu sounded good. But with only one person working and a long line at 2pm?! Ack. It's also a MAJOR pet peeve of mine to look at goods and not see anything priced. I don't care if it's expensive, but I'm not buying anything blindly. Heck no. I left. Overpriced burgers which don't even include french fries at the high prices charged. Then they have the nerve to ask for a tip up front, as if you're going to get any more service then a lady bringing the burger over to your table and dropping it off, which you're not. There were no condiments at the table such as ketchup. The burger didn't even include some thousand island sauce or some mayonaise. The burger was good but bland. I looked at what they were selling and most of it is even more overpriced. After receiving the burger and realizing they didn't give me any thousand island or some sort of sauce to put on the burger I went back into where I ordered but the gal who is the cashier and takes your order ignored me. Oh yes, she also claimed that when I requested the burger to be cut in half because myself and my company were not that hungry she said they didn't allow sharing. Funny but when I go to Elmer's or Sweet Water restaurant or even Applebee's they have no problem with that. If you like getting ripped off and literally feeling that you've experienced highway robbery then by all means stop there. Otherwise there is a pretty good store which sells potato wedges, hot dogs etcetera which also has a gas station and good restrooms just to the west about a mile or so on Highway 126. read more

So far so good. Last time we were here it was more store than restaurant. We live in the area (part time) and decided to come in for lunch today. Cool tunes playing and the vibe is good. Awesome selection of local(ish) beer/cider on tap as well as many coolers with a variety of beverages. There's also beer/wine to go if you need to take some home. Ambiance is mellow and trendy; corrugated siding, natural wood, black fixtures make it cool. Picnic c tables, metal tables and window bar seating with little hidden spots provide ample indoor options. Outside is a big patio with a large fire pit and lots of tables. Can't wait for summer to come for music and dinner. For the nature lovers, there are lots of fun books, field guides, puzzles and ephemera to browse. Don't forget the artisan chocolate and candy stashed around the place. Together we ordered the seasonal adult grilled cheese with onion rings and the pulled pork sandwich. I love that they use fresh local and organic ingredients. You should expect to pay a little more for such great stuff and the distance one has to go to supply a restaurant 50 miles from a "major" city. The food was great; wouldn't change a thing. And yes, I bought a Smokey the Bear jigsaw puzzle! Can't wait to come back and enjoy a night on the patio with an awesome band playing. See ya read more

I'm a local who has eaten at Obsidian Grill repeatedly over the last several months and had been satisfied. However, there's a real problem: come here only if you want your burger medium-well or worse. The owner (I presume) would not serve me a rare burger. I am a rational adult and am aware of the risks involved in eating meat done the way I prefer. That this person would presume to substitute their judgment for mine in a matter concerning my health is offensive. The owner's financial concerns took precedence over my culinary concerns. The Obsidian Grill used to be my favorite lunch spot on the McKenzie! The food was great and the store was well stocked with to-go snacks that were great for throwing into a backpack to eat later. Since reopening, the food is unfortunately not as good as it once was. We have been back to give it another shot a few times and each time have left feeling lackluster. The food is bland and overpriced. The store is full fancy coffee and chocolate instead of trail snacks. It seems to be marketed more towards the mushroom powder fanatics than the outdoor recreation crowd nowadays. read more

Nice spot to refresh and recover from the Tomalitch Blue Pool hike since it's close to the area. We got in and enjoyed some drinks while we waited for the kitchen to open at 4pm. There was covered outdoor picnic tables and patio seating. They have a fire pit for the colder weather. There's a live band that plays on the weekend so that was nice to enjoy as well. I ordered the quinoa salad with chicken. Love love the chimichurri sauce with it and the light clean flavors that made up this whole dish. There was a lot of salad to eat. I could have totally shared this with someone else. There were port-a-potties and a wash station for use. They have a parking lot. And there's historical information about this site and local area that's cool to learn. read more

Love this place! Amazing food every time! I appreciate their seasonal menus for lunch and dinner. They also have a small breakfast selection and delicious coffees and lattes. If you have gluten allergies, dairy allergies or are vegan you will also find lots of food choices. The staff is very friendly and always seem to have a smiles on their faces. Outside ambience is lovely with the wood fire pit and live music. Inside they have a small assortment of goods from local artisans. They also have a nice selection of healthy grab and go snacks for hitting the trails. Next time you're in McKenzie Bridge definitely stop in, I don't think you will disappointed. read more

The perfect spot to grab food and drinks after a big day on the River or the National Recreation Trail! It is approachable, comfortable and delicious! After going in the front counter and ordering food, they bring it outside to you on the back patio! It is very quick and convenient for those wanting a quick-food-stop on their drive back to town, and it is also quick for those that are starving after a day playing at the McKenzie River!! The Obsidian Grill gets bonus points for me, for allowing doggos on the outside patio- it is huge and spacious and spread out so the dogs can have their own space- and not be right next to a potential-other-dog. The patio is huge!!! ANd, they have covered and uncovered options. And, both times I have been there they have had some sort of Live Event. The had an author, and representation from Oregon Wild speak about her book release, and they had live music the 2nd night I was there! They have a nice beer selection, but the last time I was there I ordered RootBeer on draft from McKenzie River Brewing, and it was clutch! Their fries are top notch! I had so much fun eating here! You walk into a small general store and place your order at the register. I wasn't expecting much considering it's pretty laid back, but I was very impressed. The outdoor area is large and very clean. They have corn hole and a fire pit. They also have board games to play at your table. The food came out relatively quickly, and I really enjoyed the tacos. My kids seemed to like their food as well (hot dogs). I especially liked that they could spill their water or walk around and it didn't matter because we were outside. When we left, we were able to grab an ice cream treat from the store - the cherry on top of a neat place! read more

I really really really liked this place! We were camping nearby and this was a great place to grab a bite that we didn't have to cook over a campfire, and considering the COVID of it all, it was a well-organized and safe, socially-distanced experience. I'd love to come back and get the full experience, but during these strange times you can rest assured that you can visit and then leave happy and fulfilled. All outdoor seating, with plenty of picnic tables, some covered and some not. Order from the bartender, take a number, then find a seat. Pretty standard operation. The food we had was pretty much standard bar food (I think a burger and fish & chips) but we were both happy. The bathrooms are porta potties (boo) but they're as clean as humanly possible, with a handwashing station and ample sanitizer around the venue. Honestly, there aren't a lot of places to choose from for many miles in any direction. This is your best choice. If I drive back through, I'll definitely stop for a burger and a beer. read more

Great place to stop with remarkably good food. Came here for the live music and had dinner on the patio. Great time. The sliders are huge. Had both the pulled pork and burger sliders - yum. Ugh you guys! I was super into you bcs I spend time up the Mackenzie and it has been SUCH a wonderful place to stop after biking and boating. Prior to tonight, everything has been perfect. But oy, service was terrible. We placed an order and only got half of it so we went inside again to be told the part of our order that didn't arrive "didn't print?" Ok? So we ordered it AGAIN. And it didn't come AGAIN. So we went back inside AGAIN to be told it "didn't print" again? WTF?!! How does "printing" have to do with us getting our food? First time, ok. Mistakes can be made. But second time??!! Super disappointing. read more

If you are anywhere in the area, this restaurant is worth a stop. Great salads with homemade dressing, my husband said his Caesar salad with grilled salmon "couldn't have been better". Even if you don't like onion rings much, give them a try here. They come with a homemade Marion berry BBQ sauce that is out of this world tasty. The onion rings are good too, just the right amount of batter used. But! The best part. They have a pretty courtyard in the back with a big fireplace to sit around and picnic tables and a small stage. The night we were there they had a great three person band from Portland playing. This place was great! From outside you wouldn't picture what your I store for! The outside area to sit had games a fire pit and I even saw signs that said live music! I ordered one of the specials and it was delicious! As was my husbands food. But the best part was the wings with the house made blue cheese! We joined a number of refugees from the place across the street, which was so awful that a number of people left, hungry and frustrated at one of the worst restaurants in the state. A bunch of us descended on MGS and they welcomed us with open arms (and open kitchen), brought out our food in a timely manner and did it all with a smile. I have enjoyed the food and music here on several occasions pre-pandemic, but it's been hard to catch them open when I've been by the last year and 1/2, which is not surprising with how the pandemic has hit restaurants. Today though, I planned ahead and looked at their website so I could confirm they'd be open for me to grab a bite to eat after a hike. When I arrived, though, I was informed by the girl working the counter that the grill wasn't open at that time (3:00 pm), so only things like salad or nachos were available. Not the worst thing in the world by any means, and I would have gone ahead and ordered one of those if it weren't for the dismissive attitude she would soon display. I politely mentioned that I had checked the hours online, and it would be helpful for customers if the website could be updated with current hours since they are frequently changing, because it's a pretty long way to drive for food only to find it closed. (I would have brought a lunch if I'd known.) Instead of a response like: "Oh yeah, that would be a good idea, sorry for the inconvenience," I got: "Well, with all of the changes all of the time with covid, it's just not possible ..." and a litany of how short of workers they are, and all the other things anyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows perfectly well about what businesses are facing right now. So I just reiterated that it would be nice, and encourage business, but the same litany, including the "fact" that "no one ever looks at the website" annoyed response again. Well, I looked at it, and I bet other people are too. I guess the fact that others of us have to change our websites on the daily and sometimes hourly basis in order to provide good customer service during this whole pandemic never occurred to her, so my suggestion was apparently preposterous. I'm just saying, for a restaurant that is out of the way, doing all that's possible to provide current/accurate hours of operation online seems like a pretty good business plan. read more

My girlfriend and i tried this place out since it was local. She got a burger and I got the cod and fries that was on special. The cod was a real disappointment. The outside was golden and crisp, but inside was watery undercooked fish. The person delivering the food to the tables never came back, so I had to go back inside to the front of the store where I ordered to request another order. I was given a free cider and went back to my table. The new order came in a timely fashion. I checked a piece and the fish appeared to to be nearly cooked but not what I would call great. The breading was so overdone it was like chewing on glass. The larger piece of fish was inedible as the first order, not cooked. The fryer oil was most definitely too hot to cook frozen cod filets properly, and it would appear the "cook" was oblivious. My partners burger was ok, the bun was toasted hard and a bit too burnt for her liking. Between here and takodas, it appears good fish can't be had unless you can make it yourself. read more

Drove over 4 hours round trip on Father's Day just to eat here again after a 2 yr hiatus. Sorely disappointed. My wife's bacon cheeseburger was charcoal and had no detectable seasoning. Being a lite eater myself, I ordered chickenstrips. These were cooked so far past done it was what I imagine fried cardboard would taste like if it were served. The atmosphere and friendly service warrant some praise so they get kudos. The food..... not so much. read more

Great burger and onion rings. We've been on a buffalo wing hunt - these were really good! The Blue Cheese dressing was soooo good (if you like it thick and chunky). Asked if I could get the recipe.... For now, it remains a secret! Nice enjoyable place - rainy outside so not very busy. I imagine in warmer weather it will get crowded in the eating area.
