We were in town visiting for a doctor's appt. When we checked into our hotel we asked the front desk where they recommend eating and immediately they said Mi Cancun! We took them up on this advice and we were not disappointed! We started off with the table side guac which was absolutely delicious and fresh!! We also had a the traditional and skinny margs which were so good!! Dangerously good!! for dinner, we got a combo tamale and enchilada as well as the tacos al pastor! Both were good, not great. I will say that their tacos al pastor were more flavorful than a lot of places and I routinely order this! The service was absolutely great! Super attentive! Great, atmosphere and service as always. However, the menu says the Chilaquiles come with green salsa not the red salsa it came out with. I went ahead and ate it. It was good. But I really would've liked to try it with the Verde salsa. I guess they were out of green salsa. read more

Recently had lunch at Mi Cancun. The music was unbearably loud and the waiters, most of whom seemed young, were yelling to each other from one end of the restaurant to the other and hanging out like they were on a street corner, not being respectful of customers who were there to dine. Waitress seemed totally disinterested. Food was the same as the dozens of other Mexican restaurants in the area. Haven't been for few months, so was pretty disappointed with the meal. This used to be our go to mex spot in PBO. Husband had fajita and did not like the overly seasoned mixture. Not what it used to be. I had pork carnitas and it was tasteless except for the heavy dose of cilantro on each taco which was swarming with what looked like fruit flies. The chopped cilantro had stems and all. I also had a salad with the tacos that was made with spring mix lettuce that was wilted and spoiled, tomatoes were over ripe. Sent the salad back to trade for a bowl of black beans and they were tasteless. The rice was very soggy. Tried the husbands refried beans and they were over seasoned. I used to live in Pittsboro during COVID and came / got takeout from here a few times. I was recently nearby and thought to pop in for fajitas. Across all categories (food, service, and ambiance), the place has gone downhill. The food was never 5/5, but I'd give it a 2/5 now. The service used to be excellent, but now I'd give it a 1/5. The ambience was previously a 3 or 4, but on my most recent visit the vibe and difficulty parking brought it down to a 2/5. I won't be back. read more

This is our fave Mexican place in Pittsboro. The staff is consistently friendly and attentive. The food is always good. They make their salsa in-house and give each person their own bowl now, which I love. Typically I get the Chicken Rolls which are an appetizer because I love the chipotle cream sauce and it's a good portion. I often take half of it home for lunch the next day. However, last weekend I got the Parrillada mix for one. There was enough food for two and it was incredible. The taste of each protein was complex and so full of flavor. The veggies were perfect. I will definitely get this dish again and I took most of it home! One warning, the pepper on top is likely a Serrano and even a small bite lit my mouth up!! But still tasty! We also got guacamole live and it was almost as good as how I make it at home. read more

I had high hopes based on my wife's previous visit; overall not bad, but not necessarily worth the drive to Pittsboro. On the plus side, the outdoor space is covered and partially screened, so a good place to sit outside even on a rainy day. The service was attentive and quick, but not particularly accurate (botched an easy drink order, but promptly corrected it). The standard table salsa was top-notch. the food was....well, average. On the negative, the chips were overcooked. The molcajete was served on a platter (no molcajete!), had minimal onions and little panela cheese or napoles (cactus leaves). The chile relleno was served flat (what appeared to be an Anaheim that was steamed to mush rather than a hearty poblano) - very disappointing. The other dishes were also very average. I have wrote a review here before , again it has disappeared. Interesting, it seems to keep happening. I like this place and always had great service. I have noticed that they have increased there prices by a large margin . 4 of us could dine here before, with a few drinks and come out around $100.00 now for that add about $65.00. If you have lived in the Chapel Hill / Pittsboro area long you know that it is difficult to find good quality authentic Mexican food. Well, if you are still searching this place is the answer!! There are some places if you go a bit farther North, but this is a great spot without the congestion. Full disclosure, if you go on a Friday evening there is likely going to be a bit of a wait. This restaurant is located in the new Penguin Place in Chatham Park. Beyond the food being very good, the staff is amazing friendly and works hard to make sure all of their guest are taken care of and having a good time. There is a full bar with plenty of beers on tap. Personal Recommendations: Spicy Steak Tacos rock! However, they are very spicy so if you don't like hot food, I recommend just getting the steak tacos. Also, the live guacamole is so good. Tried Mi Cancun fir lunch for the first time the other day. Went off hours so was able to be seated right away. The restaurant is small but has some great open air seating this time of year. Chips and salsa were brought right over, both were good. Order a couple of too shelf margaritas, which were excellent. You pay a little extra for good tequila but worth it. We ordered the chorizo dip which was excellent. You get a good portion for the price. I ordered the lunch chimichanga, which comes with refried beans. The chimichanga was good, plenty of chicken and cheese, the refried beans were very lackluster. Tasted like they were any you buy in a can from the grocery store. They need to spice those up. My daughter got the chorizo burrito, which was loaded with meat and chorizo. The only thing is the menu did not mention onions were in it, which should be listed. She stated it was excellent. We orders churros for dessert. Plate presentation was nice, a decent amount for the price. The service was excellent. Attentive but not intrusive. We needed more chips, they were brought right away. The staff seemed to be having a good time working with each other and help each other out if busy. The lunch prices are very reasonable. We did 2 top shelf drinks, appetizers, meal and dessert, and with tax and tip less the. $90. I will definitely return to try more on the menu. read more

Tasty and dependable traditional Tex-Mex with super-fast service. We went on a busy Friday night and were seated immediately. The drinks were generous and tasty, if a little over-garnished. The menu has all the usual Tex-Mex favorites, with a good vegetarian selection. The veggies are fresh and grilled for a nice smokey flavor. The service was cordial and very quick. While we didn't feel rushed, it's clear they're turning the tables quickly, which is probably why we didn't have to wait for a table. Mi Cancun is my first choice for Mexican food in town. No one else does guacamole like Guacamole Live! There have been occasional hiccups in service due to a language barrier, but if there is a problem.they quickly make it right.Very attentive staff.Great mixed drinks. I like that there are choices with vegetables.i love the Parrillada Mix, a good choice if you want delicious vegetables with the grilled meats. You will have leftovers! I had heard great things about this restaurant...unfortunately, my experience was terrible. While, we were given drinks and menu, no one took our order for over 20 minutes. Other tables were seated and orders taken. During our wait time my grandson spilled his water...no service came to the rescue...once we got someone's attention they failed to take the wet napkins we had used to clean up the mess. Never bringing napkins that we could use once our meal would arrive. Our visit was a bit rough. This a small version of the Mi Cancun with an excellent location next to House of Hops in Pittsboro. We were excited for the specials listed outside but when we ordered the listed items, we were told they were the lunch specials. Nothing on the sign stated lunch and there was no apology for the misrepresentation. Since we were seated by the front door, I saw other patrons reading the specials sign that our waitress made no effort to correct after telling us they were not available, I told the employee standing by the door he should inform them the items were not available now. Nothing! No effort to correct the situation.. We ordered the combo platters and they were not bad, nothing special. One of our favorite dishes at the Morrisville location is the carnitas and ordered this to go for our daughter. Our wait for the items were long, especially when the entree sat behind the reception area for some time before I could flag someone to inquire about it. Again, no apology! Get the carnitas home and not great, very salty. read more

Another 3-star that I feel I need to disclaim: Chatham is rife with adequate Mexican food, but is still a microcosm of the larger Triangle area, which is to say - nope. If you've ever lived in Texas (yes, me) or California (also yes, me) then you know. If you haven't, then go to Mi Cancun for sure, because it's better than Compadres, Monterrey, the other Monterrey, Guanajuato, or Bandido's. (It is not better than Gonza, which is always worth the drive) Something they do here that I like is the actual taco plate with indentations to hold your tacos upright. But - as you might have guessed, given I am a 40 year old woman who still likes her food not touching - the tacos are drippier than I want. It's like at Chipotle, when they serve up your meat without letting it strain a second first. I really like the chips, which are seasoned, and the queso is pretty good. The al pastor tacos are my top favorite, followed by the chicken/guac/pineapple. My husband loves the fajitas to the exclusion of all other items, and my son doesn't like the chicken fingers but insists on ordering them every time anyway. Margs and mojitos are both good, but inconsistently served - every time, they've got a new presentation and seemingly a new recipe. I guess that means they're iterating based on feedback, but it's tough to track. Use your Yelp powers for good and check-in for a free cup of queso! read more
