Unexpectedly found great salvadorian food in saint Augustine. Mi carnal deserves the visit of all tourist. I had the pupusas and like my initial statement they tasted great. The service was excellent and prompt, as my drink of the day I had the traditional horchata that complemented the meal. Thank you mi Carnal for making us feel welcomed. Just found this place! Go there order popusas. They are a little bit like a soft taco but sooo much better.

I have eaten here numerous times. I like it because it's very clean, the food is fresh made when ordered and the service is good. I have had the huevos rancheros, taco salad (chicken) and the tacos. Tacos are soft ones made with fresh cilanto and just right spicy chicken. 3 for 7.99 is more than I can eat. Fresh made to order guacamole is available but not on the menu as yet..Ask for it. Wish they would add expresso and latin coffees. Interesting mix of customers. Latino laborers mixed with students, police and doctors All in all would not hesitate to recommend it for both breakfast and lunch. read more

I'm surprised by the good reviews on this place. I'm very sorry to say, but this place was absolutely horrible. I ordered a combination and received a tiny smearing on the plate (like 2 bites, scraping the plate) of refried beans. (Rice was on the smaller side too but definitely more substantial compared to the ultra-skimpy beans). (However, for some reason the rice was mostly corn with fewer grains of rice mixed in - go figure.) Beans were super salty. Got a burrito - it was super small & there was hardly any meat in it and no flavor to any part of it at all. Tortilla was stale & dry to the point of being flaky on the ends (like if you microwave a burrito too long.) Tried adding the salsas from the case - waiter came over & exclaimed how great the salsas were - didnt have the heart to tell him that both were absolutely bland & flavorless! Especially the red one! (couldn't believe it!). My kids shared a breakfast quesadilla (at recommendation of the waiter) - when it arrived, was seriously unrecognizable - I could barely figure out what was eggs, cheese, etc. This looked & tasted quality-wise on par to some frozen/microwaved fast food breakfast item you'd get at McDonald's, possibly even a bit lower quality - I told my kids they didn't have to eat something that nasty. Also that was pretty small too like my food was - certainly not worth anywhere near the price charged for it. Neither was my combination worth what I paid. The only positive thing I can say for this restaurant is that it appeared to be a mom-and-pop traditional kind of place, like they were trying... and nice home-style decor... It was just too bad about the food. I would love to support this kind of place, but based on the food I will not come here again, sorry :-( read more

Best traditional Mexican I've had in a while. Very friendly, great prices, and it has a little Spanish grocery store inside.

This place is spectacular! Everything my fiance and I have gotten has been excellent. The Papusas, a Salvadorian dish (the owner is Salvadorian), are amazing and are definitely our favorite thing on the menu. The owner, Carlos, is super nice and we always enjoy chatting with him. Also, although this place is small, they have better vegetarian options than any of the larger Mexican places we've been to around here. read more

Very interesting "hole in the wall" place with a little convenience store attached. Feels very authenticate and I love the people who work here. It is family owned. I came here on lunch break and had my food in about 15 minutes. Felt very welcome and the homemade sauces are very good. Get the papusas! I will be making this a frequent spot for my lunch trips. If you're craving Taco Bell, elevate your taste for once and spend your money here instead. You'll be glad you did. Food was cooked on the spot, and was very hot even after a 20 minute drive in traffic. A+ read more

Excellent, authentic Mexican/Salvadoran food. Very well priced and a small mom and pop place. The owner took our order and actually sat to talk to us about where we were from and had some idle talk. We found this wonderful small restaurant and food market on Yelp while visiting St. Augustine. Great food and friendly service in a family owned restaurant. The black bean papusas and tamales filled with chicken were great. The tamales were accompanied by super refried beans and rice. Hard to understand why anyone would want to eat at Taco Bell or a chain Tex-Mex place when you can dine on authentic food for a modest price at a restaurant like Taqueria Mi Carnal. We also had fun browsing in the tienda, which sold food products and accessories like tortilla makers. Not to be missed. read more

My two daughters and I eat at this restaurant on 6/17/16 for dinner. It doesn't have a lot to offer as far as décor goes but the food was delicious. We loved the Pupusas, the Chicken Quesadillas and the Tacos. We will go again. read more

This place is a must!! Great friendly service to begin. Our food was AMAZING! I had pupusas and they were so authentic, I felt like I was back in El Salvador. My husband had the "biggest burrito" with chicken and he loved it. I was so impressed with the homemade tortillas and all the salsas were incredible! Mr. Wonderful and I are visiting St Augustine for a week or so, and Mr. W. had a hankering for Mexican food. I Yelped for help finding the perfect place. Hello, Mi Carnal! We started with the most delicious guac and chips either of us, in all our travels, had ever been served. Fresh, cool, so good. Then we shared three steak tacos and a plate of steak fajitas, all so hot and tasty. We were stuffed, but everything to that point had been excellent, so we didn't want to leave without trying the fried plantains with cream, and we are so glad we did, as they were nicely crisp on the outside and warm and sweet on the inside, and were served with just enough cream as a coungerpoint to the natural sweetness of the plantains. The proprietor Carlos and his lovely wife could not have given us better service, and Mi Carnal is clean, bright and welcoming. Hope we have time in the coming days to visit again to have more guac, more plantains, and to perhaps try the pupusas. Yum! read more
