    #9 Pupusas

My fav papusas in the area, hands down. I get the #9 pork, beans and cheese. I know nothing about Salvadorian food, so I can't speak to its authenticity. It's a little browned on the outside but ooey gooey goodness on the instead. The pickled veggies and tomato sauce make it. It's not quite as good as the one in Redwood city that closed, they put sliced avocados on top. It's not in the fanciest area, however it's always busy. I the staff is very nice. Large array of drinks and beer. I need to try more there!

Every Tuesday for dinner I try a new place. Today, it was Mi Chalateca Pupuseria. As soon as we entered we were greeted by the wonderful staff and shown to a table. We've never had Salvadorian food so we went a big crazy when ordering. Got 4 pupusas: jalapeno cheese (pretty spicy), 2 beef and cheese and chorizo and cheese, all of them were delicious and served with a fantastic cabbage salad. We got a chicken tamale with was alright, nothing out of the ordinary. The beef tongue and cheese sincronizada which was basically a quesadilla was delicious!! I haven't seen many places offering tongue on the menu. The Salvadorian horchata was also very tasty. Great experience and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

This place is as authentic as it gets. I counted 5 people working in a small area, like a well oiled machine. My friend ordered a regular burrito "regular" look at the picture!! Every place I have ever been to, this so called regular burrito would EASILY qualify as a super burrito. Believe it or not they do have a Super burrito. My friend loved it but could only eat just over 1/2 of it. I forgot what mine was called but it had green & red bell peppers, lots of cheese, steak and who knows what else along with like a dozen mini "hot" tortillas. I also ordered a Horchata and a Churro "they forgot the Churro but didn't charge me so..." Overall the food is excellent here, friendly service, and they give you large quantity of food, seriously what more can you ask for? Booth seat cushions are showing their age but beyond that...... I will definitely be back and I also definitely recommend them.

This was the first time I had El Salvadorian food and it was great! Pupusas slap! I had the pork and cheese, jalapeño and cheese and chorizo and potatoes variety. All great in their own ways. I enjoy walking up to a counter to settle your tab as well. The waitress was incredibly friendly and had great suggestions for us. With our leftovers we even got some of that cabbage salad to go in a ziploc!

Out shopping for the holidays and stopped by for some great food. We've eaten here many times and are always happy with the food, service and everything else. This is a small sized pupuseria - probably totally seating can fit 30 people. Tonight we order delicious pupusa revueltas (mixed), chorizo tacos and and an alambre plate. Everything came out hot, fresh and delicious. This is why we keep coming back

I tried the jalapeño con queso y ayote con queso pupusas and they were delicious! Very cheesy and that perfect mix of crunchy and soft pupusas. I think I saw God when I took my first bite (make sure to add the toppings first). Their service is also really great even though I seem to always go at their busiest times!

It's been very hard to find an authentic Salvadoran restaurant that has pupusas. I was so happy I came across this place. The server was very helpful she recommended I try the pupusas con harina de arroz. I will be having my pupusas like this from here on out. The restaurant is quite small but gets busy, I noticed there was a lot of take out orders being done as well which is a good sign because often times the food doesn't taste the same.

With the cabbage and hot sauce, I was told this is how the El Salvadorians do it. It made it! I would most def go back! I stuffed myself, two would have been enough. Very reasonably priced! This place is a hidden gem!

Today I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. The plate is for 3 enchiladas. This is a lot of food AND I ate it ALL. Oh my goodness. I am really stuffed right now but it was so delicious I couldn't help myself. They have great music and the service is superior. Thanks again for an awesome lunch!! Until next time...

This little hole in the wall/seem to be family owned and operated (not sure if it is but feels like It) restaurant is very good. I really enjoyed what I ordered and it was my first time trying it after wanting to try it in 11 years living next to it since I had moved just across from it back when I was in high school. I'd never had pupusas before but after having them for the first time, I have been converted, and will seek them out where ever I can find them. I hope to come back and try all of their excellent food items. Not only did I have the pupusa's but the taco's were very professional customer service and like I said before, seems to be family owned and operated. I will be coming back for more soon!

The platter includes one pupusa of your choice, one pastelito, one chicken tamal, one corn tamal, fried yuca with chicharron, one empanada, plantains, sour cream, pickled cabbage, and pickled red onions. I chose the pork, bean, and cheese pupusa, which ended up being one of my favorite items. It tasted authentic with great tortilla texture and flavor. The pastelito was nice and crispy. The chicken tamal was good and similar to a Mexican tamale, but with a softer masa. The corn tamal was sweet and tasted like a cornbread muffin. The fried yuca was good and had a similar texture to potatoes. The chicharron was okay and was a bit bland. The empanada was more of a dessert, as it was sweet with a custard-like filling. The plantains were cooked perfectly and had a nice balanced of sweetness. Also ordered one pupusa with pork and cheese. Personally, I prefer the version that includes beans, but this one was still worth trying. The sopa de pata is a cow feet soup that includes cabbage, carrots, tripe, and yuca, served with tortilla, dried chili peppers, and dried oregano on the side. The broth was flavorful, but there were a lot of vegetables. The cow feet did not have a lot of tendon, so it was basically two pieces of bone that took up a lot of space in the bowl. The tripe was soft, and I like how it was prepared well without any unpleasant smell. The horchata Salvadoreña was refreshing, but okay. Plenty of parking. Customer service was good, and both the waitress and kitchen staff were friendly and welcoming. The indoor dining is small and can fit about 20 to 25 people. Overall, this is a solid spot for Salvadoran food!

I tried the popular baleada, which is a home-made flour tortilla filled with a layer of mashed red beans, queso fresco, eggs and with or without meat (I got it with carne asada). The flour tortilla was just as other described - soft, buttery smooth, almost melt in your mouth goodness. The carne asada was dry and hard so I could've gone without. I bet a braised beef like barbacoa would've been perfect for this item. It also came with salsa and I selected mild which gave it a nice bright flavor. I also ordered a chicken tamale (they also offer pork) and I was surprised to find a whole chicken wing (no skin) stuffed into the tamale! I broke into it using a fork and hit something hard which turned out to be the bones. But honestly, this was one of the best tamales I've tried in a long time. Flavorful, moist, and a nice sized portion. It came wrapped in what I think was banana leaf. The service was fast on a Wednesday night and there were a handful of friendly patrons seated nearby. You could tell that they were regulars. The space was intimate with around 10-15 tables seating about 4 people each. Maya's Cafe menu has a wide assortment of dishes to choose from: serving breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, lunch items such as burritos, or soups and full on dinner plates with rice, beans, and choice of protein. There's even more selection and the whole menu is in Spanish so I'll be sure to use Google Translate next time!
