It's hard to find a cheap delicious meal practically anywhere in San Jose, and in this neighborhood especially. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves up yummy pupusas (including frijoles, frijoles + queso, or revuelta) that are super fresh at $4/each, and topped with their tangy curtido (picked cabbage slaw) and salsa, you've basically got a whole balanced lunch for less than $10. On their menu they also have a giant taco made out of a pupusa base (hence "pupusa taco mix" I think) for a higher price, but I prefer to stick with the classics. Love supporting this small business that is open literally almost all day til 10. Cashier is very nice. Give them a try.

Ppupusas are on point. Had 2 revueltas, they bring you two jars of pickled garnishment and the Michelada was on freaking point and served in a large beer mug, should have ordered another one...

Not the best pupusas, but also not terrible, the filling was good but the pupusas itself was just not good or authentically made. Where's the cheese oozing out, the greasiness, the stuffiness. The casamiento was alright, it was on the dry side and lacked flavor, and the chicken sandwhich was also not my favorite. The pupusa taco mix was not bad, the carne asada gave it a boost of flavor along with the rest of the stuff that came with it. I give them props for adding a little Mexican twist to the pupusas, but the pupusas itself were not my favorite, I've had way better.

The pupusas and empanadas were absolutely the best, flavorful, and filling! Only downside was the very slow service, so be ready to wait.

I've seen this place every day only way to work, and tonight was the night. We ordered a taco of carnitas, and the taste was amazing. I knee, everything was gonna be tasty. We moved forward with a pupusa taco mix l, atole de elote, and an agua fresca. The customer service is very nice. Israel was our server and cashier. This is a small family owned restaurant. The lobby is small but cozy. Very clean. I am happy to support this new local restaurant.

The platter includes one pupusa of your choice, one pastelito, one chicken tamal, one corn tamal, fried yuca with chicharron, one empanada, plantains, sour cream, pickled cabbage, and pickled red onions. I chose the pork, bean, and cheese pupusa, which ended up being one of my favorite items. It tasted authentic with great tortilla texture and flavor. The pastelito was nice and crispy. The chicken tamal was good and similar to a Mexican tamale, but with a softer masa. The corn tamal was sweet and tasted like a cornbread muffin. The fried yuca was good and had a similar texture to potatoes. The chicharron was okay and was a bit bland. The empanada was more of a dessert, as it was sweet with a custard-like filling. The plantains were cooked perfectly and had a nice balanced of sweetness. Also ordered one pupusa with pork and cheese. Personally, I prefer the version that includes beans, but this one was still worth trying. The sopa de pata is a cow feet soup that includes cabbage, carrots, tripe, and yuca, served with tortilla, dried chili peppers, and dried oregano on the side. The broth was flavorful, but there were a lot of vegetables. The cow feet did not have a lot of tendon, so it was basically two pieces of bone that took up a lot of space in the bowl. The tripe was soft, and I like how it was prepared well without any unpleasant smell. The horchata Salvadoreña was refreshing, but okay. Plenty of parking. Customer service was good, and both the waitress and kitchen staff were friendly and welcoming. The indoor dining is small and can fit about 20 to 25 people. Overall, this is a solid spot for Salvadoran food!

I tried the popular baleada, which is a home-made flour tortilla filled with a layer of mashed red beans, queso fresco, eggs and with or without meat (I got it with carne asada). The flour tortilla was just as other described - soft, buttery smooth, almost melt in your mouth goodness. The carne asada was dry and hard so I could've gone without. I bet a braised beef like barbacoa would've been perfect for this item. It also came with salsa and I selected mild which gave it a nice bright flavor. I also ordered a chicken tamale (they also offer pork) and I was surprised to find a whole chicken wing (no skin) stuffed into the tamale! I broke into it using a fork and hit something hard which turned out to be the bones. But honestly, this was one of the best tamales I've tried in a long time. Flavorful, moist, and a nice sized portion. It came wrapped in what I think was banana leaf. The service was fast on a Wednesday night and there were a handful of friendly patrons seated nearby. You could tell that they were regulars. The space was intimate with around 10-15 tables seating about 4 people each. Maya's Cafe menu has a wide assortment of dishes to choose from: serving breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, lunch items such as burritos, or soups and full on dinner plates with rice, beans, and choice of protein. There's even more selection and the whole menu is in Spanish so I'll be sure to use Google Translate next time!

The food truck is parked in a gravel driveway/parking "lot". Look for the tall billowing sign boasting "Pupusas" and three flags along the fence. My curiosity finally got the best of me when I saw a stand-up sandwich sign on the street saying, "Open Now". We drove in and parked behind the food truck although you can park on the street. We were handed a menu and were told "Solo pupusas". I suppose they offer other items in other locations, but I was fine just trying a pupusa, having never enjoyed one before. We ordered two carne asada w/cheese pupusas, $4 each. I paid with cash. The young lady had to dig into her purse for change. LOL I tipped the change into the tip jar. They have some tables and chairs under a canopy to wait or dine. There is also a portable sink to wash your hands and a porta potty nearby. It took maybe 10 minutes to get our order, as these are made-to-order. Our to-go order was really hot and came with a bag of ice-cold tomato salsa and a bag of slaw, (which I later learned is curtido.) Since this was the first time trying a pupusa before, we had no idea how to eat it and what to do with the curtido and salsa. Eventually we figured it out but no matter how we ate them, these pupusas were delicious!!! Will we go back! Absolutely!!!

They said it wasn't the same kind of cheese, and the meat wasn't very seasoned. Other than that, they're pretty decent. I probably won't go back again, but they're not bad. Just, they're not just what we're used to. A little bit more flavor, a little cheesier. Not as much filling as we're used to. It's like an unobtainable quest but whenever I have the chance to fill that empty void, I do so by randomly sampling. So what makes a good empanada? To me, I look for a buttery and flaky outer shell. This should not be overly oily or dense. The dough ratio should not overpower the filling and the empanada should be able to hold the stuffed contents well. I personally gravitate towards savory fillings which should be moist but not soggy. Best Artisan Empanadas menu offers a long list of drinks ranging from espresso, teas, lattes, frappes, smoothies, and alcoholic drinks. The empanadas come in savory and sweet options. These can be purchases as is or served with sides, turning the item into a full blown meal. There are 4 different salads available for those who want a healthier alternative. As a quick snack and first attempt of trying out BAE, my sister and I made the purchase of: *Mango Tropical Shaker *Chicken & Mushroom Empanada *Traditional Beef Empanada *Argentinian Chimichurry Sauce The empanadas are amazing when it comes to the dough standpoint. Bae has the recipe down to a T and will make even the toughest eater a fan! The chicken and mushroom empanada was exceptionally delicious- creamy, flavorful, and very tasty. I would have easily grabbed another if we didn't already have plans for our next bite. The traditional beef empanada was good but the raisins totally threw me off. The plump, overly sweet raisins weren't a good combo with the salty olives according to my tastebuds. Again, this was still very doable but I made sure to remove each raisin I came across. The mango tropical shaker was okay, just a little too sweet for me. 5/5 stars for BAE's empanadas. I eagerly look forward to trying the panzerotto [pizza], chorizo, and assorted breakfast empanadas. I thought it would be hard to search Mexican restaurants one by one to pick out the ones that serve empanadas; I was wrong. One easy search and BAE pops up. I was very happy to arrive at a private parking lot instead of looking for street parking or desperately searching for a parking structure. BAE is clean, organized, and neat; the interior is more like a cafe than a messy mom-and-pop restaurant. The empanadas are clearly displayed on the cashier's side, each with a label underneath. There are corners decorated for selfies or simply a good mood cheering. Overall, it's visually appealing. We ordered the Chicken and Mushroom, Potato Egg and Cheese, and Bacon Egg and Cheese. The cashier was polite and offered us some sauce choices. They are $0.5 each. We chose Tsatziki which has Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil and dill. It wasn't our cup of tea. We chose take out and each empanada was nicely warmed, wrapped and clearly labeled in each paper. The empanadas I would rate them in this order: potato egg and cheese, chicken mushroom, bacon egg and cheese. The Potato Egg and Cheese has diced onions inside, but it's soft and warm, very balanced in flavor and texture. Top notch comfort food. The Chicken and Mushroom filling was creamier than I thought. I was not expecting a white cream cheese element in it, nevertheless, chunky chicken and mushroom slices are solid. I was most disappointed at Bacon Egg and Cheese. It was too salty and the egg looked and tasted like those overcooked dry breakfast eggs from Comfort Inn breakfast where it came out from some kind of liquid egg box.
