We both had the birria tacos and they were amazing!! I would go back for those! They were moist, flavorful, fall of the bone tender. It came with consume. The consume which is like a meat broth you dip it in was okay. I wished it was alittle more flavorful and thicker but it was sorta watery but still vey good. The al paster taco was good but alittle dry but loved the seasoning! The horchata drink was great for the size and price! Wow!! Don't let the hole in the wall status fool you! This was excellent food! It was like going to a taco truck inside a building. The food was very reminiscent of a food truck. This is without a doubt my favorite Mexican place of all time. This is your typical no-frills-adjacent-to-a-grocery-store Mexican eatery. The interior is simple, yet authentic. As of late, this place is boasting more plants and Lady of Guadalupe candles. First, the homemade chips: AMAZING! So buttery and fresh. And it is served with two different salsas: a red and a green. What I really like about this place, is that the salsa is very different depending on who made it for that day. I've come here many times while I was a student at Bradley University, and the salsas were rarely the same (minus the always consistent red and green colors). I am always a fan of the burrito. Only $5 (used to be $4, but this place does have to survive somehow) for a huge, authentic burrito. No need to order sides: this thing is HUGE and tasty. But I've also had the tacos, sopes, nachos, huevos rancheros, and almost anything else they offer here. All amazing. I recently came here with my girlfriend,stuffed our faces until we were full beyond belief (or at least me), and it was $15.60 for the both of us. I think I've tried everywhere, and this is my favorite Mexican food restaurant in the Peoria area. Americanized Mexican food restaurants have their place, but if you want something closer to real Mexican cuisine, you have to get in here. I fell in love with the small and modest but excellent Mexican food restaurants sprinkled about Chicago, and Mi Familia nails that better than any other around here for me. The free corn tortilla chips and two different kinds of salsa (red and hot green) are freshly homemade and already delicious. If you're on a budget, the vegetarian burrito is substantial, tasty, and only $4!! Bail on restaurants like Jalapeño's, Los Jimadores, and Good Tequila's... The guacamole was, as my boyfriend likes to say, "so fresh, it was rude" (it means awesome, kids!). I had 2 al pastor tacos and all I can say is my mouth is watering, thinking about the next time I'm eating here...and I still have one taco left. Lol. It's that good. Boyfriend had carne asada and now he's torn because he had a bite of my fabulous pastor and now he said it's going to make choosing very hard in the future. Clean and neat, the folks running it are very nice. All package drinks, no fountain, but they have the tasty Mexican sodas. If you want authentic Mexican food, this is the place. The dining area is small but clean and orderly. The staff seems to barely speak English, but they know how to put together and order of delicious tacos! Connected to the restaurant is a Mexican grocery. The same review applies. I love this tiny shop, and although I don't buy much fresh meat there, the chorizo is very good and they will always have typical Mexican produce and other products. read more

If you're looking for cheap eats, come here but grab but grab it to go. I ended up getting an enchilada dinner and a beer for around $10.00. You can't beat that. On top of that, the portion size was perfect. My friend ended up getting this delicious fresh guacamole for cheap too. I wasn't a fan of the beans but everything else was great. If you plan to order food from here, as mentioned, get it to go. This used to be the best place to get authentic Mexican in Peoria. It seems to have changed owners, the sweet woman that used to work there with the original cook are no longer there. The men that work there are rude, predatory, and cook lazily. The rice used to have vegetables and now is just bland. Sad to see this place go downhill read more

TLDR: Wow, proper Mexican food in P-town. Try the chile rellanos-- it's real! Beans are uber tasty, too. I just moved from San Diego, mecca of cheap, tasty, REAL Mexican food. I have this secret that I totally judge Mexican places on their beans and chile rellenos. Since I've come here, I've tried Jalapenos and Good Tequilas. I really don't know what possesses these restaurants to add ground beef to their chile rellanos, but THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!! A proper chile rellenos is a WHOLE chile, stuffed with cheese, breaded and deep fried with red sauce on top. Good Tequilas on Glen Ave gave me a whole chile, stuffed with cheesy ground beef, fried and served w/out sauce. Jalapenos in the Metro Centre gave me the poorest excuse of chile rellano I've ever tried: two spoonfuls of meat covered in cheese, with a square inch of chile on top. L-O-FREAKING-L. I'm telling you: you can absolutely judge the authenticity and tastiness of a Mexican's place's food by the chile rellano! ANYWHO ONTO MY FOOD FROM MI FAMILIA: As you might have guessed, I got the chile rellano meal. It came with two chiles, cooked correctly, with red sauce, a side of beans and rice, and tortillas. Chile rellano: 8.5/10, beans: 8/10, rice: 5/10 (does anyone really LOVE this stuff?). Try it, you won't be disappointed! read more

OMG. This place is so good. Every time I come here I get steak tacos with cilantro & onion. They make their guacamole in house, and it is amazing. They also fresh fry their tortilla chips in house. My husband swears by their carne asada burrito. We live in San Diego now but we were regulars when we lived here. The food stands up to the Mexican food we can get there. Really great authentic Mexican. Honestly the best I've had outside of Chicago. Have been there probably 15-20 times over lunch hour. I've only tried the steak tacos and the torta sandwich but both are freakin amazing. The neighborhood isn't the best... But the food is definitely worth it. Excellent and very authentic Mexican food. Very, very low key. I had the taco dinner, my son a burrito dinner with Mexican sausage & my daughter had a burrito dinner with steak. They were HUGE portions and came with beans (with cheese) and rice. Wonderful flavor and cooked to order. We had enough to take home and eat that evening. The total cost for the 3 dinners (with drink & tip) was only $26! While I was there, there was a continuous flow of customers coming in to eat or having take-out. read more

The chips came with a couple different sauces to try and they were pretty good. I got the burrito dinner and the other patron got the taco dinner, both chicken. It was a ton of food. Caught some gristle in mine, but I am not basing my rating on that alone. The beans were good, along with the rice being typical mexican restaurant rice. Where it lost some stars for me was the seasoning of the chicken. There was some on it, but not near enough. The chicken had a bland taste. I would eat the food again and try something different as I believe this place definitely has potential and is much better than a place like Good Tequilas.
