I had the Hawaiian empenadas, along with a beef and potato one, and they were amazing. Best empenadas that I have had in Philly since moving here 4 1/2 years ago. I also had an order of plantains, along with a bowl of plantain soup...all were delicious, and inexpensive. Service was very attentive and they were very thankful for my business. Excellent food presentation, great flavors, and great service. Everything tasted fresh and was served at the right temperature to immediately enjoy. We ordered empanadas and they were delicious. I ordered the arroz mixto and it was very tasty. I also had a great cup of coffee and a mango fruit juice mixed with water. I will try the fruit juice mixed with milk next time. I have never been to Columbia or Argentina, so I cannot say if Mi Pais is the real deal. I've eaten there several times and their empanadas are better than any I've had elsewhere. My wife and I had a great lunch today at Mi Pais, a superb family style Columbian eatery. The casserole, shishkabob style pork & shrimp, daily soup all tasted home made and that's because they really are - this is really family style cooking. We also had coffee, tres leches cake and a passion fruit milk shake. The owners and waittress were extremely gracious and super friendly. Come here to relax and enjoy comfort food. This place is excellent, and not expensive. Their empanadas are authentic, and bites of pure goodness. I recommend the Colombian ones over the Argentinian ones. The Patacones locus are also highly recommended. Everyone there is always very nice. The sauces are addicting. The hot one is very spicy, so eat with caution. I would bathe in the cilantro sauce. From the outside, you would never imagine what this place has to offer. You may even pass it by. Mi Pais is located in a strip mall, but don't for one second let that fool you. This place is the real deal. Let's start with the empanadas. To. Die. For. We got the beef and pork empanadas and both were excellent. You could make a meal on these alone. You get three sauces on the table- fresh cilantro, mild jalapeño, and habanero. These sauces are good on any and everything. The fresh cilantro was my favorite- fresh and super tasty. I ordered the fried pork for my entree and it was killer. Crispy and delicious. The portion is huge....so come hungry! My husband got the tamales and they were absolutely incredible. What a great find! Absolutely great food,huge portions, family owned and low prices. I had a beef empenada - and like a previous reviewer states, it was great. Not too heavy, not greasy and accompinied by a homemade green sauce. For the main course, I had the Columbian mixed plate - chorizo suasage, skirt steak, amazing bacon, plantains, beans and a fried egg. When the plate came, you could not see any of the bottom for all of the food. Everything was tasty, but the bacon has to be eaten to be believed! Now i can eat a pretty good amount of food - but half of this came back home in a doggy bag (not that any of my dogs were going to get any!!!) The kicker - this dish costs $11.98. Seriously, if this was a downtown restaurant, this selection would have been over $30.00. For dessert the wife and i split what can best be described as two pizzelle (but thinner) type cookies sandwiching grated cheese and caramel-type sauce. The owner told me that this was a very popular street food in S. America. It was light, tasty and hit the spot. Thanks to my fellow Yelper''s for writing this place up. Anyplace that sells tomate de arbol and other such Delicious delicacies is ok by me!!!!!!! While the frozen tomatillo is no substitute for fresh, it gets the job done. After finishing my longest marathon training run, all I could think of was their Hawaiian Empanadas! I convinced my husband to drive 40+ mins back to Mi Pais just for them... And some more of their Colombian bacon. The second go around was just as good, if not better than our first. Our server was a sweet heart and the food was delicious. We even tried dessert this time. I devoured a guava cheese pastry and the tres leches cake was super yummy. We'll pass on the mango flan next time. But I do promise... There will definitely be another next time! read more

Had Argentinian empanadas with cilantro sauce and alfajor de maicena and absolutely love it, tasted just like home

If you don't understand their menu, go there anyways! First time I went to the storefront just to check it out, I really didn't get a sense of the menu. It wasn't till I walked in and one of the family members (seems like its all family run) invited me in and offered me an empanada while I figured out my game plan. Not that I have had any Columbian food elsewhere, their food offerings are amazing. If you want something a little south of the border, but not cookie-cutter Mexican, this is the place to expand your palate. Most people will be really happy with the mix in the Cazuleta Mi Pais bowl with good-sized portions of their stuff, but for the truly ambitious, try the Bandeja Mi Pais with the full SLAB of Columbian bacon (there a few pictures of this posted on Yelp here). The bacon is to die for, its not overly salty, but its very tasty. Its a bit crunchy with the rind, but I think the texture is just right overall, even if the slab looks a little weird. Until I overloaded with Mi Pais takeout one weekend, I was craving the bacon every week since I started going there. They have 4 flavors of Empanada: beef, chicken, Argentinian and Hawaiian. Try the basic beef or chicken first and if you want more flavor, try the Argentinian. As I understand it, all of them are good. Try it with the light green sauce. Price/value is excellent and service is always EXTREMELY friendly. I think I have met the adult son, and his two parents and felt taken care of each time. Apparently the mother the chef behind most/all recipes and deserves your/my compliments. read more
