On our way home from LA, we planned to stop at our usual halfway point in Kettleman City. We typically go with In-N-Out or Bravo Farms, but this time we were craving tacos. After a quick Yelp search, we came across Mi Ranchito and decided to give it a try, and we're so glad we did. The food was phenomenal, service was great, and the kitchen was clean. It's not a traditional restaurant (it's located inside KC Market/Gas Station), but don't let that deter you. Stopped here on our way down the 5. Inside KC market. Cashier was really nice. Small shrimp ceviche: delicious! Cold and sour. A little spicy. For $11.99, it's such a great value. Love how they keep the ceviche separate from the tostada so you can eat the ceviche at your pace and your tostada doesn't get soggy. Asada regular burrito: ok. Asada was solid. Tasted very homey and not too salty like many other places. Not very greasy either. Pastor taco was delicious! Had the pleasure of sharing their pollo asado combo plate with my family as well as two carne asada tacos. Everything was FIRE rotisserie chicken was juicy, carne asada was well seasoned, handmade corn tortillas, and the salsa was spicy! So glad we found this new favorite hole in the wall! This taqueria is pretty easy to get to: only about 2 miles from the Hwy 5 Kettleman City exit. It is a nice change from the over-processed fast food options right off the exit. It is situated inside a little market and is not crowded. We ordered 10+ tacos: carne asada, pollo, carnita, lengua, etc. They were good, but I have had better. The meats were cooked fine, but did not have a huge flavor punch as those from other taquerias I have been to. Some of the meats were still soaked in its cooking liquid that the liquid bled through the tortilla shells, making them mushy and unable to maintain integrity. My tortillas, even when doubled, fell apart after about two bites (1 star off). I was also hoping to get a cup of water, but they do not offer free tap water. You must purchase bottled water from the market. After spending $50 on lunch, I was surprised tap water was not included (1 star off). Oh my goodness so worth the extra 1.5 mile off the 5. It's in a gas convenience store - like a deli counter but has huge menu with 2 tables to eat-in. We had a veggie burrito (wet with green sauce) & a carne asada supreme burrito. Both were HUGE & so flavorful & fresh. Could only eat 1/2! Sweet cook threw in some delicious grilled jalapeños. How did I never know about this place until last week? Thanks, Yelpers, for turning me on to the Kettleman City Market, Sinclair gas, and the taqueria inside it. I have a special place in my heart for stellar gas station eats, especially when it saves me from having to stand in line at McDonald's or In-N-Out. I saw the crowds when I did the Bay Area to SoCal drive for Thanksgiving and immediately drove another mile into town for gas that was $2 cheaper per gallon and some of the best carnitas (and chile verde) and al pastor tacos ever. Sadly, the grilled chicken they're famous for is only available Thursday-Sunday, but maybe next time. Bonus: the bathroom is clean and there's no wait (unlike at the Chevron). read more

This four star rating probably deserves to be a five, but I will admit that I have access to some amazing Mexican restaurants and taco trucks. It definitely deserves five stars for being a reprieve in the fast food wasteland known as the Kettleman City exit. We order the taco plate and carnitas plate. The quantity of food is very generous. I took off one star because not all the food was as flavorful, and the carnitas was a bit dry. The favorite was the al pastor, followed by the asada. The chicken was very dry. Unfortunately, they did not have chili verde available (this is my favorite). That said, this is far better than any other food option I've had in this area. If you need gas, this is the place to get it. It is far less busy than the stops right off the highway, and also quite a bit cheaper (nearly $2 / gallon less when we were there). Another pro tip - their bathroom is clean. It has limited capacity, but it's worth the wait. This is a great spot to grab a quick bite in Kettleman City while avoiding the super busy areas right next to the highway. It's a simple, no-frills place with some absolutely incredible food. Parking was easy in the gas station's lot, and the restaurant was tucked inside the gas station market. Seriously, this was one of the best wet burritos I ever had. I got it with Chile Verde, and it was out of this world. The pork was so juicy, and the green sauce was so flavorful. I also had plenty of leftovers too--I swear I think the container weighed about 2 pounds! Everything was made fresh to order as well, and the staff were very kind and generous. From LA, I needed a place to stop for food, stretch legs and get gas. Gas price was average, so not too low and not too high. Food was awesome, my husband said this was the best asada quesadilla he had. I got the asada, rice and bean plate and shared it was my 2 year old (she liked the rice and avocado while watching Blippi). For those two food items, we paid $20ish. This place is located in the grocery store. Bathrooms are clean. Coffee is available and all kinds of snacks from Cheetos, Snickers, ice cream and Hispanic snacks. Refrigerated drinks are available too. I could knock off a star because we got a $4 cold brew in a bottle, but we noticed the cap didn't pop, so we went to Starbucks which was on the way to the 5 freeway. Breakfast Burrito was tasty, no complaints except for two things: 1) I appreciate that you use real eggs made to order but PLEASE pull the egg shells out and/or learn how to crack an egg properly. The burritos were a bit on the larger size and quite good, but I ordered linguica and got longaniza. It is something most people wouldn't notice and likely say is the same thing, but it was definitely spicier than expected and lacking the smoky flavor that I was looking for. I still really enjoyed it, but I would have just gone with something else rather than eat that level of spicy food on a long road trip. This is a part of the market and you walk up to order. They have traditional Mexican food and while it's no frills, the tacos were very good. I got carne asada and the lady cooking and taking orders was helpful. They have a couple tables that you can quickly sit and eat at which is convenient. This is a neighborhood market for the farmers and local community so it's kind of an out of the way spot not geared toward travelers. Great tacos! My kids went crazy for these tacos. We were coming back from the coast and wanted some tacos. Mi Ranchito came up. It's not in the main part of the commercial area of Kettleman City but by the houses inside the gas station. There's some tables to sit but I'm guessing most people get the food to go. There also clean restrooms here too. The works were friendly and accommodating. The tacos were delicious. The salsa on them was very tasty. Don't let the outside full you. The place is located inside a Sinclair gas station. I was craving for some tacos and decided to give this place a chance. I read the reviews and it seems promising. I also read that it had cheaper gas which made me wanted to go try it even more because I wanted to do an all stop pit. Well the gas was not cheap! A matter of fact, it was more expensive then other gas stations. The place inside was like any other place in a gas station. The lady helping was really great and she helped me decide what to get since I was not familiar. I got the three piece taco plate with rice and refried beans. I would of took a pick but I was so hungry that I ate it all while driving. The food was pretty good. The tacos had a spicery sauce on top of it that I could have done without. This is the second time we stopped here. Both times were just about perfect. Only " issue " this time is we came by quite late and they were out of Chille relleno- but I had a chili verde burrito which was excellent. The food is authentic and very flavorful and the prices are very , very reasonable for the quantity. The kitchen was very clean both times. The ladies are very friendly. This is 2 miles from the freeway- just drive past the fast food and other more commercial places. Only other issue is that there are just a few tables inside.
