Total negligence and zero accountability We adopted a sweet, well-behaved female dog this past Friday. She was severely underweight, which we were aware of. To avoid stomach issues from switching food, we were feeding her small amounts as recommended. From Friday to Monday she barely pooped and was vomiting. We thought it was the food change. On Monday she finally pooped and vomited - both were full of fabric scraps and pieces of clothing. We took her to the shelter's vet clinic today (Same Monday) - within the 30-day post-adoption medical window they advertise. They refused to take responsibility, saying she showed no symptoms when she left, so it's not their problem. Their excuse was that she "must have eaten something at our house." That is impossible. She was supervised at all times and had no access to rags. They told us "there's nothing they can tear apart in the kennels" - which is false. Anyone who has been there can see the kennels have blankets, towels, and toys inside. We complained at the front desk and were told the manager had already left and nothing could be done, but that "it shouldn't be like that and it's wrong." So even staff agreed it was wrong. I understand shelters are overcrowded and overwhelmed, but this kind of oversight can kill an animal. A foreign body obstruction is life-threatening. This is complete negligence and a total lack of interest in helping after adoption. If you adopt here, document everything, photograph the kennel, and get a private vet check immediately. I was so grateful to this shelter for the following day, to wake up to the surprise that they threw the kitten at my door WITH NO NOTICE for the second time because they said she was hissing. She is a very sweet kitten and what cat doesnt? They denied her of finding a furever home. HUGE PAINFUL DISAPPOINTMENT. She is dying for a home and all she needed was a little bit of time to adapt. WOW Mobile was Inhumane and terrible! on July 27, 2026, when I arrived at their location on Caribbean Blvd, right outside the Government Center at 2:30 PM, there were around 15 people standing on the grass under terrible heat and sun. One of the men and lady that I first got close to told me that they had both been waiting there since their arrival at 9:30 in the morning. He also added that the doctor had been spending most of his time walking up and down the sidewalk while talking on his cellphone. He pointed to the doctor on the other side of the street, and I saw it for myself. Yes, even then, he was pacing up and down while talking on his phone. Inside the trailer, there was apparently only one female worker from what I could see. Even though their hours were listed as up until 4:30 PM, at 3:30 PM, the woman opened the trailer's door and told everyone that they weren't taking anyone else, and for everybody to leave. I felt so bad for all the people who had been there much longer than I. They looked so hot, tired, upset. And the pets were also probably suffering inside the cages. So many people changed their day, didn't go to work, had to take public transportation, and so much more to help their pets or strays. They were there to do a good deed, while trusting and counting on a program that was advertised by their county. But, the staff who were there in person managing the "actual program", and who were appointed by the county to offer the services, were completely unprofessional, incompetent, disorganized and unwilling to do their job efficiently and to treat people and animals humanely. Not only were they incompetent, but also arrogant, heartless and disrespectful. It was truly a sad and revolting situation. And they did it, because they were confident that no one there would even know how to complain. If you are looking to adopt a large dog. This is an awesome place to look. If you are looking to adopt a small dog, then this is not really a very good option for you. 99% of the available dogs here are medium to large dogs. Small dogs in one day basically out the next. They work on a first come first serve basis. And I do understand that. I live 15 miles away from the shelter. I looked at their Animal listings at 11 PM the night before I went. The dog that I was looking at, had a hold on it because it had just arrived as a stray. That information had been updated 18 minutes before I looked. When I arrived at the animal shelter at 9 AM opening time I was told that a hold had already been put on the dog. And I said yes I know it said that there was a hold because it was a stray. I was told no it had already been adopted. Of course that is not what it said on the website. So I accepted this and decided that since I was there, I would look. I'd happen to come across a sweet poodle. So I waited five minutes to speak to a counselor and again was told the dog had already been adopted. It said nothing on the cage that it was in that it had already been adopted. They will not put more than one hold on a dog. Adoptions don't always end up happening. But for me to put a hold on that dog, I would have to wait until it's pick up day and show back up at 9 AM in the morning in order to put a hold on it if the dog was still there If you do not live, but a few miles from the shelter, this is not a place for you to try and find a small dog. The chances of you successfully entering their facility at 9 AM to put a hold on a dog is a very low probability. But if you want a large dog, this is an awesome place to go . read more

We loved all the kittens there and the place, the only problem I had was with a costumer. My youngest daughter wanted this black and white kitten, we were going to get it for her but there was a lady saying "she's mine" to the cat. We got there earlier than her so we were sure we were going to get it. But as soon as we were going to adopt her, the lady in the front said she's not available because someone adopted it. Then, I saw the old lady that wanted the kitten to, smiling at my daughter as she was tearing up. And she took the free toys my daughter wanted for that cat. Mm..so since my last review of five stars, I became a foster carer for some kittens. I was not very impressed with how it all works and operates, and felt virtually alone with no support. Also appointments for check ups were always running late and took forever. Also I could never get through on the phone and when I addressed concerns via email it took days for any responses. For this reason I am not offering my services to foster there again, but now do fostering for private rescues whereby it is a better experience for me. I did however bring my two dogs in for their rabies vaccines and was very impressed with the covid precautions they had in place and it went incredibly smoothly. My appointment was on time and I was in and out very quickly with no fuss. Plus the prices are incredibly cheap compared to going to a vets. So I recommend taking advantage of these services. The rabies vaccine is 15 dollars for one year or for every three years. read more

For an animal shelter this place is very clean! I came here this morning because my son's school talked about acts of kindness and they (4 year olds) came up with the idea of donating animal food to the shelter. How awesome! All of the parents chipped in and bought animal food to the school. I think we did a pretty good job considering it's only 4 students in the class. We were very successful at not adopting any animals. Haha. If I could I'd take them all home! It kind of sucks because deep down you kind of know that the older dogs won't be adopted. The even sadder part was that A LOT of animals were surrendered just yesterday! One cutie that stuck with me was Sherrie. A 14yr old cat who looked like she just did not want to be there. She should be in someone's home living out her final years. Her owner had surrendered not only her but two 12yr old cats; one whose name was Lily. She still had a little spunk to her. I know some people don't think highly of animal shelters but it's better than the humane society and overpriced breeders. They are doing what they can. I get there at 4:58pm and the rude security guard at the door says we just closed the line no more animals for today. He said they were too packed. This was not true as I've seen this place actually packed. They just want to be comfortable and leave at 6:30 on the dot. Honestly pathetic as I planned and got time off work to get there to be turned away with 1 hour 32 mins of time left till close. read more

Miami Dade states they are a "No Kill" shelter which is a big lie. They euthanize animals on a daily basis. I think they come in on weekends and holidays just to sneak a few more bodies through. They come up with the lamest excuses to kill an animal. They have an Enrichment Coordinator, Natalie Leon, who appears to be in charge of deciding which animals live or die. I would really like to know what her credentials are for this position. There are reports that she is aware, or possibly responsible for, dogs are being locked in closets in the storage room at night out of the public's view with no food or water. The reason - behavior issues. What do these employees expect? Perfect behavior out of an animal whose whole world has been turned upside down and they don't understand why? And what is up with these perfectly healthy dogs and cats getting URIs. What are they doing to make all these animals sick? There are also botched sterilizations. What are they doing? Letting "vets" practice on homeless animals. I know shelters are overwhelmed right now with animals being surrendered by irresponsible owners. But the shelters still have budgets and could try harder to make the situations better. If the employees can't do the job, get rid of them and get some who actually care about the animals. read more

absolutely no help. A lost dog approached me when heading to work today. Was informed I would be able to bring the dog here and surrender her since I unfortunately can not house her. I was told she would be taken care of and further assisted to be rehomed. Once I arrived, I was informed i should not have assisted the dog and they were at capacity so there was nothing they could do. Instead of helping me or guiding me on what to do next I was told to either reabandon the dog and call 301 to report her sighting or to keep the dog as she is now my "problem", which again is unfortunately not an option for me. I was then asked to leave and figure this out on my own. Currently still scrambling to see if there is a safe facility I can take her to so she can be rehomed. I would have appreciated at least pointing me in the right direct instead of telling me to leave the dog on the street. read more

Went to correct a rabies tag snafu. Drove to the back where the tag office is. No line or waiting on a Thursday afternoon. Everyone there was friendly and helpful. We got the issue cleared up in minutes. I didn't explore the other parts of the building but you can see the pet meet and greet area outside. A couple families were entertaining dogs. It looks like a high tech facility and I'd love to explore more one day. read more

This shelter seems to take care of their animals pretty well. When I walked thru, the cages were clean and all of the animals had water and a kong toy. When you get their if you are looking to adopt a pet, you can go online first and see what attracts you or you can just go there and look around. Once you find an animal you like, take down the number on their cage (take a picture or write it down) then take it to the front and they will let you have some time with the animal. When adopting, you need them to be neutered, if they are not you will have to pay a deposit of 50 dollars, so you can come back and have them neutered. The people there are all very nice and caring, they are a bit overworked. Since the amount of people working there is not enough for all the animals and people going there. read more

The 4 stars if for the Cat TNR program. I wish the county would hire a dedicated team to do it. I'd be happy for my tax dollars to go to this. Anyway, the program here is very good. They will let you borrow a trap if you need one (you have to put down a deposit which they return to you when you bring the trap back). I just lured the cat I wanted to trap with food in a small plastic crate for about a week so that she'd be comfortable going in there till one day BAM! I closed the door & I was able to take her in my much lighter crate. They're open Mon-Sat and no appointment is needed. You just need to arrive by 3pm but check the time or call 311 to double check. You can either pick up the cat once the surgery is done or they will drop the cat off in the area where you trapped. This is an important service for the community. I had to start doing this because of clueless people behind my house that had unaltered outdoor cats. MDAS doesn't charge you a penny. In fact, sometimes they run promos where they'll pay you to bring them in so they can fix them. read more

First I want to state that not only is their customer service on the phone horrible but so is their in person customer service. You would think that they are being held there against their will and that they don't actually want to help any of these animals. Second, I have a community cat that randomly came to my door and my mother and I started feeding it. It was very, very thin and had a big appetite (we suspected worms, or worse) and his tail was broken and healed very bent. We weren't and still aren't sure of age but he didn't have a cut ear or tattoo on his ear so we knew he wasn't neutered. I called MDAS to ask if they would vaccinate him with all the shots, neuter him, and give him a medical check up before doing the surgery. The lady on the phone told me yes and they confirmed this all in person when I took him in his carrier. In person on the day we took him I signed a form with all my information and on this form I checked the box that stated they HAD to call me to PICK HIM UP after the surgery was done and in case of having to be PTS, we would HAVE to be called to give consent or pick him up to take him home instead. I was made sure this was the case because I did not want this cat to have any problems with infections on the neuter site or the amputated tail they said they would also do after the surgery so I was going to make the effort to take care of him for a bit after the surgery. They did NOT call after the surgery. My mother and I waited a week after we took him before calling because we thought they hadn't called us to make sure his tail was healing correctly after amputation. We were wrong. We aren't sure when they brought him back into the neighborhood because he just randomly showed up and any time I tried to get in contact with them after the day we brought him in, it just kept telling me that there were too many people calling and to try again later. Until today, 6/21/24. I finally got someone to answer me and let them know that they didn't call me and no one would take responsibility for this. Now, I wouldn't mind them not calling had the cat been in a healthy state upon showing up at my door however he was NOT. He was skinnier than when we left him there for the procedures AND his surgery site for his amputated tail was/is infected and may have worms on it (we think we saw some). When I was on call today with the MDAS person they suggested I bring the cat back and surrender it to them because since he is sick I wouldn't be able to bring him back to the neighborhood. In what logical universe would it make sense for me to bring him back to the place who caused him to be in this state in the first place? I'm thankful my vet for my pet is willing to see the cat instead and help. MDAS took NO responsibility for the state the cat was in afterwards and took NO responsibility for not calling and following through on the papers THEY made ME sign. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with Miami-Dade Animal Services. Despite my disagreement and disgust with most of their policies and practices, I highly recommend that anybody looking for a new four-legged family member to consider this place as their number one option because you will literally be saving a life. MDAS is a high kill shelter that kills ridiculously high numbers of cats and dogs on a daily basis. While I hate them for the massacre of so many potentially adoptable pets, I also recognize that the fault is not entirely theirs. Irresponsible pet parents who treat their pets like disposable playthings or who fail to spay/neuter and properly care for their animals are the primary reason that so many innocent cats and dogs lose their lives at MDAS. A mostly complacent community that is unwilling to be a part of the solution also contributes to the problem. PROS: website with pictures and information about adoptable animals, some caring staff members and volunteers who are genuinely trying to help the animals, low adoption fees, low cost and in some cases free spay/neuter services, and low cost vaccination programs. I also have to commend them for trying to reduce the killing by recently starting a TNR (trap-neuter-return) program for feral cats and making a bigger effort to work with local rescues to save more pets. CONS: unacceptably high kill rates for animals in their care, many indifferent staff members who seem to not care about the animals at all, cleanliness and crowding issues tend to create high rates of illness among shelter animals which then puts them at higher risk of euthanasia, and history of questionable euthanasia practices. Despite all that is wrong with MDAS, they do a decent overall job considering it is an open shelter that is required to take all animal surrenders. If you are thinking of surrendering a family pet here, I strongly urge you to reconsider and try to find alternative methods of rehoming your pet because leaving your furry friend here is almost surely a death sentence. If you are looking to add a new pet to the family though, I highly recommend looking here first and often. I just adopted my 2nd dog from them the day after Christmas and if I ever want any more pets, this will definitely be the first place I look. Please make adopting your only option! read more
