We stopped in for a double date with our close friends. We were seated right away and we're handed a very large menu! For drinks, we tried out their margaritas, one classic and one passion fruit. Both were delicious; you couldn't taste the tequila but it was there! For dinner, I ordered chicken enchiladas in a green sauce (my friend ordered the shrimp enchiladas!). Went here for the first time. We got there pretty late; after 9pm. It says it closes at 9 on google maps. It closes at 10pm! We called and it's on the menu. They have $2 tacos on Wednesday and Friday nights. The menu is extensive! We ordered chips and guacamole for an appetizer. The guacamole was a little bland, but it came with some salsa and it was really tasty! I ordered a chicken taco, zucchini taco, and napole taco (cactus). They come plain on a corn tortilla (pictured). You go to the bar and put your toppings on. You can add lettuce, pico de gallo, pickled onions (they were out when we went), cilantro, onion, radishes (also out), and 6 different kinds of salsas. My son got 5 different kinds of tacos and a bottle of Coca-Cola. His friend got 3 different kinds of tacos and a bottle of Coca-Cola. We ate every bite! It was super yummy. The prices can't be beat! Altogether our bill was less than $40! It's a great hole in the wall. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

Oh boy, where do I start? The parking is atrocious, there's like 3 spots in front of the restaurant. There is street parking, but it's limited. Love this authentic Mexican taqueria. The food is very fresh and spiced perfectly. I has the birria tacos and shrimp ceviche tostada, my friend had the enchiladas. This place is always packed , so be prepared to wait a bit. You can always wait at the bar and get a drink and appetizer. The servers are so friendly and helped us with choosing dishes. After coming here, I am sad to say Yelp let me down for once lol I ordered the milanesa de res torta and tacos. I tried ordering just one but was told it has to be 2 or 3 tacos so I got 2. The tacos come with just the tortilla and the meat, we were never told about the topping bar but saw it before we started eating. Meat wasn't great tasting. WORST MILANESA TORTA EVER. The breading was weird and not crispy or anything, meat was tough, hard to chew and had fat pieces. At the end the server decided to tell us it was CASH ONLY. Beware!!! They were no signs or anything so we were forced to use their atm and get charged a $3 fee for debit. I would skip the trip here, no impressed. read more

I'm ashamed to say that when my party saw the first roach crawl across our table we didn't get up & leave - we convinced ourselves that it may be somewhat normal in the area? There were two other parties who dined there when we did and they didn't seem to mind. About half way through our meal two more roaches crawled on our table at the same time ... me and one of my dinner companions literally each killed a roach at the same time! Yuck! At that point we wrapped the meal up. When we told the waiter - for the SECOND time- they comped one drink from our $150+ check. And we saw roaches crawling on the table across from afterwards. The food was average. 5 out of 10. Outside of the restaurant were rosters or chickens (not sure). It's a very small place. I've driven by this spot SO many times over the years but recently decided to finally pull over and check it out (not gonna lie: the Cat logo definitely swayed me). The small hole-in-the-wall exterior is a bit deceptive. Once you enter, you realize the restaurant is large, airy & oddly, a bit of a hipster vibe with the decor. Traditional Mexican flays & pottery mix with large portraits of Frida Kahlo & El Chapulín Colorado (!). Our waitress was lovely & very attentive. We decided to try their natural lemonade (DELICIOUS), the Guacamole (obvy) & Queso Fundido (hold the chorizo, please!). While we waited for our starters, we perused the menu and realized that we were in luck! From Wed-Fri, they offer Taco Specials ( $1.50!!!) I chose the Nopal & the Calabazita. Unbeknownst to me, "calabazita" is zucchini to them & not actual pumpkin as expected but VERY tasty! They sear the vegetable beautifully with a bit of onion, tomato & light seasoning. Just delicious! For our mains (truth be told, I was already full but NEEDED to try more. Can't help it... I have a problem with over-ordering). My father went with the Tampiqueña (Grilled Churrasco, 2 Enchiladas, Mexican Sausage, Charred Jalapeño, Rice, Beans & Tortillas). As a Mexican living in Miami, I was feeling homesick and was craving tacos to remind me of home. So I yelped Mexican restaurants near me and was found with Miami River Cafe. I had such a great experience the last time I visited Miami River Cafe so I brought my significant other to try it out as she was visiting me from LA. I had told her that the tacos were just as good as the ones we would eat in LA. Unfortunately, we were met with massive disappointment. The first red flag I saw was that the restaurant was absolutely empty. We got seated and we were assisted by a server who was sweet but was completely lost. We had asked how the tostada was prepared, and she had zero idea. She had to go back to the kitchen and ask the chef. It ultimately seemed she had no knowledge of the menu. We ordered two horchatas (which were way too sweet and had an artificial taste) and the Orale combo (1 tostada, 1 tamale, 1 quesadilla, 1 taco, & 1 gordita). The food was cold to the touch and did not look pleasing. The food was less than mediocre and was a huge let down of Mexican food. read more

Doing some urbanscape photography in the area, I came to Miami River Cafe based mostly on Caro D's review (Happy ROTD BTW!) I agree on the tacos! Straight up, those are some of the best things that can be had for about $2. The chicken was light, and I liked the citrus marinade as well as the fresh cut onions. The "rough" tortilla was a new experience but I can say I like it. Ditto with the chicken burrito! I'm digging the large amounts of red peppers and the spicy sweet salsa. Celery pieces thrown in gave it a different taste as well. The portion was huge as well; I couldn't finish it! I guess that balances out the skimpy portion of chips that weren't the usual flat tortilla from tex mex places. Served with two salsas - again not the usual pico de gallo - I preferred the spicy queso over the guacamole. I'm also taking off one star for parking. As others have commented, it is scarce, risky and I detest putting my Eleanor at risk! The music - while authentic corridos - was a touch loud even for someone of Hispanic descent. A friend of a friend told me about this place while we were having lunch at a Middle Eastern place. By the way he expressed himself, and his enthusiasm, I felt that I definitively had to hit this place. It is relatively safe, yet the dark lit surroundings make you feel that you don't want to park more than a few feet away from the entrance of the restaurant. Since the parking lot is very small, and it doesn't look safe, you may want to come in the daytime. Like I said, it is relatively safe, being near Marlin's Park and all, but you decide... The food is really good though. I had tacos (chicken, with melted cheese, shrimp, etc) and quesadillas, and the taco fillings are really good. The tortillas are also really good. The sauces are hot, and on point. I had an Agua de Jamaica, and my companions had other drinks that were good. Even though I only had the tacos, I really liked the variety of the menu. Miami River Cafe is one of these restaurants that has a lot of traditional dishes and ingredients. I did not order a real meal on my first visit, but I most likely will be back for more. I liked it that much. This place caters to locals, it is borderline a hole on the wall, it is not a hip place and the happy hour involves tacos (idk about drinks). The elotes and esquites are good, the chilaquiles I will be honest are a firm no from me. But you know what you cant make everything well so Ill let them slide. They aren't open very late and I wish they were because I crave tacos at all hours of the night but whatever, de lo bueno poco as they say. So many taco places want to reinvent the wheel with a bunch of twists and some ridiculous, "unique" approach, but Miami River Cafe just knows how to make delicious Mexican food without needing any gimmicks. The wait is sometimes annoying, but all is forgiven once you start chowing down on the scrumptious food. I enjoy picking super hardcore Hip-Hop with tons of explicit lyrics to play on the jukebox just to interrupt the whole mariachi vibe, but that's just me. The place is completely unassuming and it isn't one of those try hard taco places who are making promises they just can't keep. (looking at you El Primo Tacos). read more

So how do I start? Let's begin with the location. There is no parking so you will have to park in the nearest vicinity. The area is rugged and dirty so do not dress like a tourist. Did we see three more roaches appear from the flower ornaments that were placed in the middle of the table so now I have roaches crawling all over the table you know, and I let the people know there's roaches on the table, they totally just ignored it which to me was horrible because they know I'm eating on their table and there's roaches and they're not even giving three flying FFF's. Honestly an insult to Mexican cuisine. I ordered a Dozz XX it was flat. I ordered quedo fundido, the queso had to be Gum. The chorizo? Like ground pork and no seasoning. I ordered flautas, the chicken tasted like boiled chicken no seasoning, the beans were straight out of a can, and the rice? Diluted rice, not a single grain represented "Mexican rice". Last I ordered was the queso birria, it was dry and they gave us half a cup of sopa. Our biggest disappointment was the queso fundido. We took 1 bite each and didn't like it. When we asked to have it removed they said "it doesn't matter if we took one bite, or didn't like it all, we still have to pay". I am so disappointed. If you are Mexican as myself, do not come here.
