Who acts like a complete jerk to an 85 year old lady with a sore foot? I get that it must be frustrating when you are a surgeon and you just want to be doing surgery. So tell your practice that you don't like the clinic setting and all you want to do is surgery, so you can stop inflicting your personal unhappiness and disdain for people in pain but not needing surgery on old ladies like my mother. Seriously I have been to a lot of doctors but I've never experienced anything like this with arm waving and borderline hostility about just being there. She had foot pain and went to Ortho on call, which referred her to this provider for follow up. We went as instructed only for Dr. Brown to scold my elderly mom for being there. My mom didn't deserve the terrible, frankly unprofessional bedside manner and she was practically in tears on the drive home. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews but our experience with Dr. Brown was so disappointing and honestly shocking that I felt obligated to warn others. I brought my daughter in expecting professionalism, compassion, and expertise. Instead, we were met with arrogance, condescension, and a dismissive attitude that left her nearly in tears. After our visit, I looked at the reviews and honestly wasn't surprised to see so many patients describing similar experiences. The only glowing 5-star review appears to be from a "Tim C." in San Francisco. Maybe Tim had a completely different experience. Or maybe Tim and Dr. Brown have more in common than a shared appreciation for Dr. Brown. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. What I do know is that our experience was unacceptable. Patients deserve to be treated with respect, especially when they're already dealing with pain, injury, and uncertainty. Saved my life? Dr Brown insisted that I have an ultrasound after a foot injury which had not been treated as urgent by other professionals. I had a deep vein thrombosis which could have been fatal. He is efficient, to the point and incredibly competent. He has followed up to be sure I get ongoing treatment from others. read more

Dr. Brown is an excellent surgeon, and I am both lucky and thankful to have him as a my doctor. He repaired my ruptured achilles tendon after I injured it (poorly) playing tennis. He explained his decision making process and recommendation for surgery during our first visit, and continued to provide helpful information through the months leading to physical therapy. Once in physical therapy, it seemed like my ankle was in much better condition than expected and had decent mobility, meaning we could progress quicker in the recovery and PT process. I have no doubt that this quick progress was entirely thanks to Dr. Brown's surgical intervention and post-op recommendations. At least 2 physical therapists also commented that they often observed comparatively good or great surgical outcomes in Dr. Brown's patients. OrthoVA is also great. I limped into an OrthoVA clinic on a Tuesday and was in surgery with Dr. Brown within 2 days of the injury. Nurses were kind and the staff helpful. Several have noted Dr. Brown's "bedside manner". I encourage you to ignore these reviews. I am not an easy patient, am an anxious person, and asked a lot of questions. Dr. Brown is direct and blunt, but communicates clearly and in good faith. He always answered my questions to the best of his ability. I never felt Dr. Brown was arrogant, dismissive, or disinterested. In summary - did I add Dr. Brown to the group chat? Are we going to the bar next week? No. But I did not go to the orthopedist to hang out. Dr. Brown is an excellent surgeon with an excellent education from top-tier medical schools with sufficient, even good communication. Listen to his advice, do what he says post-op, and you will have as good an outcome as possible. Again, I am genuinely glad to have had him as my doctor. read more

Like so many others who have reviewed him, I found Dr. Brown to be rude and condescending. I was looking for guidance on whether or not I needed surgery. He told me it's 50/50. What does that even mean? I went to the appointment alone; he asked if I wanted to call my husband - he told me he would give me 3 minutes to call him. I told him I was opting against surgery. I went home and found a new surgeon. It was very discouraging to encounter a doctor who clearly does not care about his patients. Like other reviews I question why he is a mentor to students. This doctor has a bedside manner of a brick. He talks down to you, he is obnoxious, arrogant, does not listen. He had a medical student in on the appointment and was as though he was try to make me and my wife look small and nondescript in front of the student. I went to see him for possible overworked tendons. The male receptionist in the pride shirt was literally the only part of my visit I enjoyed. I don't know who shoved a stick up this doctor's butt but this guy was an absolute prick with zero bedside manner. He had what I assume were medical students in the room without my consent. He gaslit me about prior injuries, mansplained anything I tried to communicate to him, and brushed off the amount of pain I was in. I found myself having to put my foot down repeatedly just to be taken seriously. His nurses even found a way to make me feel like a joke. Although I ended up getting the proper documentation of my injury for work, he didn't supply me with anything I'd need to recover, leaving me to order things off of Amazon. Surgical intervention was good, and that is the most important thing. Lacking in social skills and emotional intelligence. Talks down to patients and does not answer questions. Instead, he goes off into a fast-talking response that does not correlate to the question asked. We finally gave up on asking any questions. Surgical skills are a plus, communication-zero. read more

This doctor saw me for the first time. He entered and asked what my issue was. I explained I had prior ankle surgery with 11 screws and a metal plate back in 11/2016. He then gets an attitude telling me I should know what's going on and then proceeds to walk me back and forth to a computer where he showed me my hardware is fine. Then he tells me he sees some arthritis forming in the side joint of my ankle. He then tells me I can get a cortisone shot to see if that helps. I agreed to the cortisone shot and he doesn't ask anything else or any medical history questions just comes in and gives me the shot. No directions for going home aftercare. And the injection he gave me has increased the pain. He has a terrible attitude and he is very sarcastic for no reason. He should not be a doctor work g with patients if he doesn't like what he does. read more

I have had previous experiences with doctors at OrthoVirginia. Dr Jeff Higgs and Dr Herring. Excellent care and very easy to speak with. Today I met with Dr Michael Brown and what a disappointment, to put it mildly. I waited an hour and 25 minutes past my scheduled appointment time to see him. Six other patients were in the same situation - the waiting game. The irritated check-in woman was not helpful when I said I might need to re-schedule so I could get back to work. I definitely interrupted her text messaging. I had scheduled an appointment for blisters and corns occuring on both of my feet. When I called to make the appointment I was very clear to explain this was not a bone issue, but soft tissue between toes. I have underlapping and it is not uncommon to get the toe straightened to stop this issue. He came in and immediately the room was too small for his arrogance and ego. He made it clear that he only treats athletes with broken bones. He kind of laughed when I tried to explain why I was seeking help. He was the rudest doctor I have ever met and we have many doctors in our family. His tone was disrespectful. His mannerisms were off. He seemed more concerned about his hair than my foot. Never let me finish a sentence. Told me to find a podiatrist. Why in the world is he in medicine? He clearly thinks he is above medicine and patients who take up his time. He needs a new profession. OrthoVirgina should look at why he is worth keeping. read more

I'm not sure I actually saw Dr. Brown or not. He flew in and out of the room so quickly, I don't know that I would recognize him if I saw him again. He was impatient and rude with me. I asked him what might cause the sudden onset of tendonitis and he said in an irritated tone, "That's what we're here to figure out." He told me to take Ibuprofen. I asked should I only take it when I am in pain or on a schedule. He did not answer my questions. I have overseen the education of future physicians for 34 years and I can assure you that this behavior is totally unacceptable. Unfortunately, OrthoVirginia pretty much has a monopoly on the market in the Richmond area so there are few other places to receive treatment unless you want to go to VCU Health or the University of Virginia. read more

Dr Brown performed surgery on my foot. The surgery went well although I continue to have soreness after 6 months. His bedside manner is not the best. He is curt and really doesn't seem to like what he is doing. At my final follow up appt. I asked about ongoing swelling in my foot. He was impatient and said I was asking about a completely different thing! It's as if he wanted me to pay for another office visit to discuss that. read more

Terrible experience. Staff was very nice. My husband & I have been treated by Dr. Bowman & Dr. Evans. Wonderful physicians. That is why I made appt. w/ this group. Mr. Brown. (He doesn't deserve the title of Dr) however has no bedside manner. One review said he was arrogant. I choose another word that starts w/an A. Challenged me on the pain in my foot. Talked down to me like I was a five yr old. Yeah, I know you've had lots of years in college. So have I. He didn't like that my PP suggested that surgery may be needed. Dissed the PP OPINION. That's all it was Mr, his opinion. I hope he doesn't talk to all of his patients the way he spoke to me. I expressed to him how I felt, I didn't get an apology. I wanted to get back on track with the appointment. FYI I waited four weeks for this appointment. I was seen 30 min late (ok, I get that). Then I forgot my ex ray, I apologized & hobbled out to my car to retrieve. Now I have waited 20 more min to be admonished by this person. I wish I could feel bad for him. However after doing research, (which I should have done prior to appt.) he's nasty to everyone. I will not continue w this physician. He had the attitude that I was a nuisance. Maybe he would be well suited to research. He shouldn't interact w/ human beings that are sick, or in pain. read more
