Tried to get an appointment. Total fail. I would rate Michael J. Hyman, M.D., and his staff absolutely, zero stars if possible; YEARS-LONG problems ignored, reflecting lack of competence, professionalism and certainly concern for existing and prospective patients. A doctor who actually cares about patients at all levels is important. Anytthing less affects a doctor's commitment to adequate diagnosis, proper care, appropriate ttreatments. Trusting your vital parts, or those of someone you love, to a doctr who views patients as the next car payment is absurd. Along those lines, although not given the consideration we should, dedicated staff is also paramount. After all, staff perform many ancillary functions including fundamental vital signs, charting medical information, maintaining correct medical records, scheduling and tracking tests and test results, etc. You want medical staff dedicated to treating patients as people not problems. I saw a sign once that read: "Beware of the dog. The cat is not trustworthy, either." Flipping the script - Beware of Dr. Hyman. The staff is not trustworthy, either. Indeed, I am considering complaining to the California Medical Board and United Healthcare. Others, e.g., Avin Edry, Nin Mintzer, Yohannes Shiferwas, Mando C., before me have complained. I join the chorus, noting in passing that nearly all of the positive reviews are all conveniently "a year ago." Coincidence or besties or relatives? On Monday, July 08, I telephones Dr. Hyman's office - repeatedly. Each call went to voicemail. On Tuesday, July 09, I telephoned at about 9:30am. Voice mail. Again about 11:00am, recording - office closed for two hour lunch from 12 noon to 2pm. Yeah, I know, I know - got the recording at 11:00am. So, anyway, called again at 2:00pm, spoke to Emily [phonetic] to make an appointment. Emily insisted Dr. Hyman did not accept an HMO plan. Accordingly, telephoned United Healthcare to switch to a PPO plan. United Healthcare said sure but remained steadfast that Dr. Hyman did in fact accept United Healthcare HMO. United instructed me to speak with Dr. Hyman direct. Telephoned his office, again, asked to speak with Dr. Hyman directly, stating Unitd Halthcare's position, and was informed by Emily that he was out of state / out of the office until July 10th. Repeated my desire for an appointment, Emily requested I e-mail a copy of my United Healthcare insurance card. Did that, including additional information and telephone number for the anticipated courtesy return call by Dr. Hyman. Long story short, waited a week (10th to the 16th), which I believe to be sufficient, Dr. Hyman never returned my telephone calls. Never heard from Emily, Period. Based on my experiences, as well as others, EMPHATICALLY do NOT recommend Michael Hyman and his staff. read more

I was referred to Dr. Hyman through my insurance, and unfortunately my overall experience with him and his office was very disappointing. From my very first visit, I never felt comfortable or welcomed as a patient. Every appointment felt rushed, like I was wasting his time or keeping him from somewhere else. One experience that really stuck with me was when I saw him near the elevator while I was with my daughter, and he went out of his way to pretend he didn't know me. I completely understand patient privacy and professionalism, but even a simple acknowledgment or hello would have been the decent thing to do. Dr. Hyman started me on testosterone therapy, but the treatment process became frustrating very quickly. The dosage schedule required me to come into the office every two weeks for injections, and each visit came with an additional fee. It started at $25 per visit, then increased to $35, and eventually went up to $60. It felt excessive and poorly communicated. I do want to mention that Genera at the front desk was always very kind and pleasant to deal with. Unfortunately, my experience with the billing department was the exact opposite. The billing representative, Sydney, was incredibly rude and unprofessional. One evening she called me back around 6 PM regarding a billing issue. During the conversation, she answered another call while I was still on the line and said, "I can't talk because I'm dealing with a very difficult client right now." I immediately asked if she was referring to me, and instead of apologizing, she responded by saying, "It's six o'clock, I have things to do." What made the situation even more frustrating was that she was the one who had called me. After that interaction, I wrote Dr. Hyman a detailed email explaining what had happened, hoping he would at least acknowledge the situation or address the behavior. Instead, I received a long response about how difficult insurance companies are to deal with and was basically told that if I wasn't happy, I should find another doctor. That ended up being the best decision I could have made. Overall, my experience with this office was negative from start to finish. I never felt valued as a patient, communication was poor, and the professionalism I expected simply wasn't there. I would not recommend this doctor or this practice to others. read more

I was referred to Dr. Hyman for certain procedure I needed. During initial meeting he appeared knowledgeable & spent 15 minutes to explain my situation. I then made another appointment for my procedure but in the second visit Dr. Hyman told me I must make appointment specifically for the procedure & not just an appointment & therefore he refused to do the procedure although he charged me for the visit. The next time I made appointment for the procedure. Dr. Hyman was talking on the phone with some relatives. I know it because he talks so loud everybody can hear him in his office. After 10 minutes, he went to the reception & joked with them. All and all about half an hour I waited until he decided to see me. However, he told me there would be no use for my procedure because my problem will be back within a day or two. I did the procedure anyways. To my opinion his medical opinion was aimed at other procedure which was much more expensive although I did not think it was necessary. We all work for money but we also must have some ethics & use professional knowledge to do our job and not only to squeeze money from others who need our help. I found Dr. Hyman obnoxious since he told me his business is larger than mine & makes more money than me (I am a small business owner). That was very unprofessional to my opinion. Further, when I asked for a copy of my file his office asked for money even though when I signed the forms, they told me the fee is applicable only if I ask for paper copy and there would be no charge if they fax or email it which I inserted in the agreement before signing but they said it would not be enforceable even though they accepted the agreement containing my note when I signed up. To my opinion, Dr. Hyman sees his patients as Dollar sign & will try to make as much money from patients as possible. I believe Dr. Hyman medical practice cares only about money & not the patients. I gave Dr. Hyman one star because there was no lower score. read more

Avoid Mr. Hyman. Horrible Urologist. Completely disconnected with patient's needs. I have an enlarged prostate. He did every test there was and ultimately completed a biopsy. Let's start with his bed side manner. I mentioned my concerns and asked questions, and they were brushed off. He put me on medication before the Biopsy. I asked why the medications wasn't working any more and causing side affects that were uncomfortable. He didn't listen to what i was saying and suggested to double the dosage. I emailed AND called to ask again if I can go on another medication and the office assistant said they needed to schedule a Telehealth call. In the mean time I'm off my medication and trying to manage the issues with an enlarged prostate, while also managing an executive level job at work. You all know what I'm talking about if you deal with the same issues. My telehealth appointment was booked for 4:30PM 2 week later. I didn't receive a call back from Mr. Hyman until 5:30PM. He immediately said if this is a bad time, he would reschedule. Why would I do that, i already waited two weeks for the appointment. He said he was in surgery. I said, well if your running late - than have your front desk simply give me a call and help me understand that a later call will be coming.. but no, he had me sitting around waiting for an hour to get his call back. There were red flags from day one that I should have noticed. Save yourself some time and find another Urologist.. this is not your guy. read more

Hmmm....not sure where to begin on this one. Dr. Hyman is one of those guys who obviously became a doctor because...well...he actually likes to help people!!! He's really not into this for any other reason--he spends a lot of time with his patients and I think he really loves what he does! I typically try to check credentials and he's got 'em--Cornell med school and he did his residency at Cornell and some huge cancer center in New York. So I'm a little embarrassed but I decided to write about my experience becuase a lot of my friends are too scared to go to a urologist for pee pee probs. I basically had to stop working out (for the last 5 years!) because I'd leak everytime I went to the gym. Dr. Hyman was super professional, the easiest male doctor I've ever had (I'm actually more comfortable with him than my Gyn!). He operated on me and the surgery took 20 minutes, outpatient, and so far (it's been 6 months), I've been working out 4 times a week and not a drop!!! Very nice office too--not over the top, just clean and super respectful. The waiting room is usually packed but I think that's becuase they have like 4 doctors working there and probably need more room in the waiting area.... read more

I wanted to write more of a thank you review for Dr. Hyman. Last year, my doctor told me I didn't need a prostate exam because my PSA was normal. When I saw Dr. Hyman for a different problem, he said we should do a prostate exam (not fun!) and lo and behold, even though the blood test was normal, he thought he felt something and recommended a biopsy. Even though I was reluctant (and freaked out), the biopsy wasn't as bad as I thought, but the turns out I had prostate cancer--a lot. He said I should have surgery. The more I read about what was at stake, the more I was terrified--no more sex, pissing in my pants, everything going to hell in a handbasket. Dr. Hyman did a robotic operation and took out my prostate. I had a catheter in me for a week which sucked. I was using diapers for about a month but here I am 3 months out from the surgery and I am grateful that everything works!! I'm cancer free and back in the saddle with my girlfriend--all is good, so thank you Dr. Hyman for everything. read more

I was a little nervous about my husband having a vasectomy with Dr. Hyman--there was a negative review from some years prior. But both of us have a primary care doctor in Beverly Hills who vouched for Dr. H--personally!!! He told us the procedure was the easiest thing he'd ever done and now he sends all his pateints to him. We both came for the initial consultation, which was hilarious--we watched a video that had to be from the '80s--Bermuda shorts! Water bed! But still very informational, we thought he would just schedule the procedure, but Dr. Hyman came in and took his time re-explaining what we saw, also made some clarifications--he does not make cuts or use stitches. He gave my husband a valium to take beforehand and so he had it done 2 days ago --took 20 minutes and says he only felt a little pinch when he got an anesthetic. He says he hasnt had any pain since and went back to work today! Yay!! read more

Dr. Michael Hyman is great! I had an adult circumcision 3 weeks ago. Before the consultation with Dr. Hyman, I had already went through some investigations with other doctors, and Dr. Hyman gave me the first impression of very experienced and professional surgeon. The operation and the following healing process completely agreed with my first impression. The operation went very well, his nursing staff is good and surgery is great, I had no pain during the procedure, and the whole thing lasted like an hour, and afterwards I don't need any painkiller, and no medicine at all, even though Dr. Hyman prescribed some. So far the recovery is good too. I would definitely recommend Dr. Hyman! He is a great guy! And thank you again, Dr. Hyman! read more

I had suffered for months before finding Dr. Michael Hyman. I am so pleased with the care he has provided to me. My previous procedures were complicated and cause me great pain. I found Dr. Hyman to be attentive and caring, he listened to my concerns and work quickly to resolve my discomfort. Dr. Hyman is accessible, supportive, and passionate. I believe he treats every patient like they are his own family. Dr. Hyman's staff is very professional and courteous. They were helpful and informative when I needed to communicate with them. Dr. Hyman is a caring, empathetic, and passionate physician. I trust him with all of my urological problems and I would recommend him to any of my friends and family. I recently referred a good friend of mine to him for a circumcision. My friend was having the procedure done for cosmetic reasons. I'm writing this yelp review on this specific page of his because I want people to know, although I see him for my urological problems, he also has illustrated his expertise at circumcisions to someone close to me and deserves to be recognized in this particular practice of medicine. read more

I had recurring bladder infections that my internist couldn't figure out. Dr. Hyman spent time to go over the whole long history of the problem (it had been going on for years off and on), my diet, stress levels and a lot of other factors that were not helping. With patience and several different antibiotics, I have been bladder well! I am thrilled and would highly recommend him. Also, the staff was helpful and super nice! (I only waited 10 minutes.) Dr. Hyman not only is smart and extremely knowledgeable, he also has a fantastic bedside manner. During my visit, he immediately put me at ease, explained everything clearly, and took time to answer all my questions. With his great personality and sense of humor, he actually managed to make a urology visit (which is no one's idea of fun) enjoyable! His staff is terrific too. I Recently had a vasectomy done by Dr. Hyman, did not know how much pain would I go thru with these procedure. It was fast, no pain involved, the only thing I was able to feel was a little pinch from the needle to numb the area. Dr Hyman is excellent. I definitely recommend him to anyone who is planning to do a Vasectomy. read more
