I first came across Michael Mei when I bought my first home and he was the listing agent. I had never met Michael but over the next few years I was on his marketing mailing list and he sent an kinds of fun promotional materials. My wife and I would always get a kick out of it and wondered what the next item would be. Cut to 8 years later and we were in the market for another home. We needed a buying agent and thought we would give Michael a try. Upon meeting him, it felt like we were meeting a celebrity since we've seen his face in the mail all of these years. We toured an open house together and we could tell he was very well experienced as a realtor. He was quick to point out market trends, projections, and had great insights not only in the house but the community overall. One thing we noticed was that he had a chance to talk to the listing agent and I could tell he went right to business in trying to get as much information as he could from the listing agent. We did not end up winning that house but our first impression was a good one. Next, Michael introduced us to his associate realtor Michelle Yuan. She would be our buying agent going forward. Michelle was very polite, courteous, and also had great knowledge of the housing market. She was also so kind to our 1yr old daughter and bought her plush toys as gifts. It was really thoughtful of her and we appreciated the gesture. We started looking for a home in April 2023 and at the time the market conditions were already somewhat challenging looking for a SFR in Orange County. Interest rates had been steadily rising meanwhile inventory felt like it was drying up. My wife and I had a pretty picky laundry list of things we were looking for in a home and a very limited budget, making it near impossible to satisfy all criteria. Michelle was able to figure out pretty quickly things we liked and did not like and was great with suggestions. We always felt like we were in constant communication with her and she always felt readily available to us. She never felt pushy and she had great insight into every home we toured together. She had an eye to look out for things that common folk don't realize, such as spotting cracks in the ceiling or calling out areas in the house that may need closer attention. In the coming months we toured a total of 20+ open houses, lost out on multiple submitted offers, and we were starting to lose hope that we would find a house at all. Michelle was very patient with us despite things looking dire. She reassured us that we should stick to our criteria and that being picky was not a bad thing. About 6 months later, we came across a house we really liked and jumped on the opportunity. Having been beat out on so many previous offers, we put tried to put in our best offer forward as our first offer and to our surprise, it got accepted!! My wife and I were ecstatic as the hunt was finally over. More than that though, we felt we came across a house we really liked and so having our offer accepted made us so happy. We were thrilled with Michelle already up until this point but once we were in escrow Michelle got down to business and really impressed us even more. Michelle was amazing when it came time to do all of the paperwork and navigate all of the legalities. Being so experienced, she cut right to the point in all aspects and was able to negotiate aspects on our behalf to the sellers, with success I might add. We had plenty of questions and she took the time to simplify and explain every little detail to us. She was well organized, timely, and her communication during this phase was top notch. She kept us aware of all deadlines and coordinated tasks between the sellers, escrow, and us wonderfully. Hard to believe Michael Mei has such great online reviews. My experience with him in selling my Irvine apartment was beyond terrible. He doesn't deserve even one star. He is arrogant, cocky, unprofessional, and can't be trusted. Definitely one of the worst realtors I have worked with in my life. MM completely misjudged the Irvine market and priced my home way way over what the market value was. He wanted to price it higher, but I advised him to not go as high. He is clueless. Despite dropping the price significantly after many weeks on the market, my house didn't sell. As soon as my listing contract with him expired, I switched to another realtor and was able to sell my home promptly. Best decision I ever made! I couldn't work with MM for another minute. I experienced nothing but unprofessionalism and lies with Michael Mei. Examples - his team shows up 20+ minutes late for a 2-3 open house they are hosting. I call to find out out why they are late and I'm told they have a "flat tire"! I was promised a luxury brochure and at the first open house, there was a single page standard printout of the property. I'm told that the luxury brochures are "at the printers" and will be ready for next weekend's open house. Really, you have your 1st open house unprepared Michael? He will cut corners at every opportunity he gets. At most of the the open houses, there wasn't even a sign-in sheet for prospective buyers. Because I couldn't trust him, I had to physically drive 30 mins for every open house to check on him and his team every weekend. Beware if you use his recommended contractors/handymen. They will overcharge you and do a horrible job. His painter did not paint the baseboards and there were streaks all over the house yet Michael thought it was OK. After open houses, I frequently had to follow-up with him since I never got regular updates. Unless I asked, I was not kept in the loop on showings, So many great relators in Irvine, do yourself the biggest favor and DO NOT work with Michael Mei. I wish I had the benefit of this review before I contracted with him. I would have sold my home 3-4 months sooner. You have been warned, engage with him at your own risk. read more
