Saw the recommendations on Yelp before deciding to come here. To be honest, I have never gone to a dentist after moving to the west coast and don't have much to compare with. As soon as I walked in, I was presented with a bunch of papers to fill out. I am always skeptical about sharing my SSN with anyone, so when I filled out everything else and asked that I not share the SSN, they were very accommodating. Plus one star for that. They were able to confirm my dental insurance and presented me with a summary of my benefits. The waiting room was clean and the music playing in the background was pleasant. Plus the wait wasn't very long. This was my first visit and Chelsey did my cleaning. She did do a thorough job and I am now coming back for a few fillings and deep cleanings. read more

I haven't gone here but I would advise any & all to stay away when looking for a dentist. Why? This dentist engages in less-than-savory business practices to try and drum up business. And if someone is willing to do this, why the heck would I show up and let them hammer & chisel away at my teeth? How do I know? His receptionist left a voicemail on a phone number which I have not been associated with for over 15 years with the following script, "This is a message for _____. You've missed your appointment and are now overdue for a checkup & cleaning. Lucky for you, there's an opening this Thursday at 8:30am. Please call us back so we can get you booked." First of all, I've NEVER had Dr. Cheng as a dentist. I've been going to the same family of dentists for 30 years and their last name is not Cheng. Second of all, they try to infer that I did something wrong by missing the appointment, then imply that my dental health care is overdue and voila, they've got a solution for me. That's just lame, low and a waste of time. You should be focusing on providing better service to your existing clients and hoping they provide referrals. If you're desperate enough to buy some antiquated list from some lowly data vendor, then cold call and scare up new clients, you're looking for business in all of the wrong places. p.s. I'm not normally one to flame in reviews. You can check my reviews and see that I'm typically a positive reviewer. But this effort is beyond the pale and needs to be called out. This review is based on multiple visits and the duration of about a year of being Dr. Cheng's patient. I went to Dr. Cheng because a good friends recommended him. The experience at first was fine and the staff was pleasant and nice. I will say scheduling a time with them was extremely difficult and many times I did not receive a response until after multiple emails and calls. This was inconvenient but did not bother me as much because they were courteous each time. I am a full time working mom who travels for work and also takes care of my grandmother. So between the 3 (poor husband is not even on the list), I am juggling time. With the constant delayed responses, on top of my own schedule, it was difficult to schedule a deep cleaning and fillings. No blaming here, just stating facts. What I eventually did to help accommodate both sides was get on their wait list for Saturdays. This way, I could ensure I'd be available and not re-schedule due to last minute work travels, or my grandmother's doctor appointments. Dr. Cheng's office called me one Friday afternoon to let me know there was a 2 hr opening the next day so I could get my other side of deep cleaning done along with the second filling. I move things around to make sure I could make it. Saturday when I went in, I waited 30 minutes before being called inside. Once in, I waited around some more... they went in and out of the room a lot without doing much for me. Once we got started, it took 1.5 hrs to do the just the filling. So 30min wait along with 1.5 hrs of fillings, my 2 hours is up and we haven't even gotten to deep cleaning yet. I expressed concern that I need to get back to my kid and only allotted 2-2.5 hrs. I asked if we could speed up a bit. At this point, they basically looked at each other and I was left in the room alone for at least another 10-15minutes. I was done at this point, the filling takes another hour and I just did not have the time. I expressed concern to Dr. Cheng and he later emailed me. Oh boy this is (one of) the best parts. His email to me basically said my schedule is too difficult to work with and that I should find another dentist who can accommodate me. I have this email still. I was a little shocked by the unprofessionalism and lack of responsibility he took. I was there, I was on time, and I tried to accommodate. How is it on me that I just didn't have another hour free? I was also never informed that they were behind. There are other negative reviews in here that states that he makes you do unnecessary fillings and x-rays (even when you're pregnant). And now thinking back, some of my x-rays and fillings were unnecessary - I was also pregnant. I just didn't know better then. The icing on the cake that made me write this review is that fact that he got his staff to call me months later, telling me they "under-estimated" the cost of my last visit and that I needed to pay $100+ more. WOOOOWWW. That is when I finally snapped. No followup for my files I asked for after firing ME as a customer. Yet you have the balls to call me for more money. Unethical. read more

He used to share the practice with Dr David Poon but since 2008 he has bought this new office and since then cleaning is performed by a hygienist. Every visit they take several x-ray even you say you may be pregnant. New office is nice but I feel the service is going worst. A lot of works are unnecessary done e.g. checking for tongue's health and measuring depth a meddle can go down the gum. I have been Dr Cheng's patient for many years, experience was OK but the previous visits were getting worst after the below two incidents: 1) I rejected his offer of referral of an orthodontist. 2) I have a toddler son and was looking for a good pediatric dentist. So I asked him for advise. He suggested we can bring my son here. I rejected his offer. The hygienist cleaned my teeth and measured the gum, then was told to wait for the Dr there. I waited there for over 10 minutes. The Dr was there chatting to the staff. The Dr came and looked at the computer, was there less than 1 minute and told me to leave. I was trying to change my appointment which was on a weekday, was told to wait three months. One of my friend who is a new patient and got a appointment next week. read more

I first visited Dr. Cheng due to an emergency situation and saw the positive reviews here on Yelp. I was not a patient at the time but they were able to accommodate me for a quick checkup within a week. At the time, I did not have insurance and they were very kind in understanding my situation. Instead of asking me to come in immediately for the fix after the checkup, they worked with me to wait for my insurance to kick in and subsequently, planned a course of action for all my teeth (been over 12 years since my fillings were put in). This plan included scheduling an optimal time for each procedure keeping aware of the insurance maximum and if it was actually worth the deductible. This has been the only dentist I've been to which did NOT hurt and I am truly amazed. Other dentists have told me that I'm plainly a wuss and/or to tolerate the pain. Here, they noted during my first visit I may need a bit longer for the numbing process and they keep checking with me if there is any pain during all procedures. They also explain what and why they are doing each process. Adjustments to my filling and crown was even done the day of (when I'm numb I can't tell if the bite is ok =P)! Although I'm still a little stressed during dental visits since one can still hear and feel vibrations, this is by far the best dentist I've ever visited. It's far from where I live but well worth the trip. I've been through a regular checkup, a filling, and a crown. Oh, and if they forget to let you watch a movie, just ask. read more

I've been to Dr. Cheng's practice twice already and have the utmost appreciation for him and his staff. Dr. Cheng is extremely professional, friendly, and very good at what he does. I had some old fillings and he did a great job; within 50 mins I was in and out and the alignment feels perfect. I'll soon be going back for a 3rd visit. He also took the time to explain why I may need to see an orthodontist surgeon due to the position and roots of my wisdom teeth. His office is organized, spotless, and it's nice to see updated equipment/techniques like cameras and composite fillings that make the filling blend in with the tooth. The office is centrally located in Santa Clara and there's plenty of parking. My visits have been more enjoyable due to his incredibly friendly and courteous staff: Geraldine, Xyris, and Mary. I had another filling put in for the other side of my mouth (same problem as my previous review) and pretty much, this time it was completely painless. His little needle + shake your cheek technique really works with the numbing process, and the drilling bit was pretty pain/stress free. Today was my first time here to Dr. Cheng's office. I recently switched insurance plans and had to switch all my doctors, what a pain! Found Dr. Cheng through my provider's list cross-referenced with yelp. Staff was very friendly and nice. They provided me with all the information and most of the paperwork ahead of time so that I could just bring it with me day of the appointment. They asked if I had any issues or concerns before we started and I told them about my concern for my wisdom teeth. They ended up taking a new 360 style x-ray for them. Started my cleaning and halfway through Dr. Cheng came in. They were very helpful. I even got a pre-screening for oral cancer from Dr. Cheng, which was a pleasant surprise. None of my previous dentists had done so. My hygienist, Winnie, was also super nice and gentle. The entire cleaning process was painless and she really took her time to clean my teeth. Dr. Cheng wrote me a referral for oral surgeon consultation. I will be getting that looked at in 2 weeks time. Overall, wonderful staff and experience here. Amazing dentist. I came here after a 2 year hiatus from any previous dental work, so one can imagine how nervous I was as I walked in through the door. Facilities This place is gorgeous, never have I been to such a modern clean office that resonates such a comforting atmosphere. I knew the second I walked towards the dentist chair that I was going to be treated very well. They use software to catalog and detail every single one of my teeth to ensure that I would get the most out of my time there. As a tech geek I was excited to how professional everything was laid out. Staff Michael and his staff are the nicest and most considerate people I have came across in the field. With much care he explained to me that my lack of proper cleaning has resulted in massive tartar buildup in between my teeth. He was very considerate in telling me about the health of my teeth and reassured me that he was going to to everything he can. After about 40 minutes of deep cleaning and a few bleeding gums later, I came out a very happy and enlightened patient. Michael is amazing and I can't wait to impress with my next appointment. Came recommended by you yelpers and I'm glad I did. I can't comment on my experience with Dr. Cheng as Dr Cheng was away when I requested to be a patient. Their sub, Dr. Christina, was professional, gave great advice and was extremely friendly. Office is neat and clean. Cleaning took the estimate hour, even with xrays. Scheduling with the office is a little off putting, email and calls simply take longer to be returned. But Judy the receptionist is extremely kind and does her best to accommodate your appointment needs. The office is in the back of the building you see from the street, so turn into the parking spaces between the two buildings for best parking. They took my Aetna PPO insurance and walked out without paying anything. When I was scheduling my appointment for fillings, Judy suggested I go with the white filling as she said "concerns about mercury in the silver fillings". Uh, aren't we in 2015 where you should be meeting health and safety standards, even for the less expensive option? I was going to go white anyway, but her comment made me take pause at her suggestion. Worth a grain of salt? read more

Dr. Cheng has a new dental office. It's great as it has all top of the line equipment and instruments. His x-rays are all digital and right after they take it, they will show it to you right there on the flat screen attached to the chair. The flat screen is great as you can see the x-ray and you can watch tv/video when you are getting your teeth cleaned. Dr. Cheng is very nice and very thorough. To the person that said measuring gum and tongue health is unnecessary : How would you feel if you have an abnormal lump on your tongue yet your dentist didn't bother to tell you ? The first time that I came to this office Dr. Cheng did a thorough check of the inside of my mouth. He even checked my thyroid for any bumps or swelling. He also informed me that he does this as an oral cancer screening. I was really impressed because no other dentist that I have gone too had ever done this. I absolutely do not mind the hygienist performing the cleaning on me. I have sat in Chelsey's chair as well as Stephanie's chair and they are both great hygienists! At the end of your cleaning Dr. Cheng will come and do an overall exam. For all of my cleanings the hygienists ALWAYS inform me that they will measure the depth of my gums. If you pay close attention you will know that the numbers represent gum disease. 3s and 2s means your gums are healthy, 4s and above mean your gum is unhealthy. So I don't think this is unnecessary to do ! If anything I believe this is just as important as sitting there looking pretty. II absolutely love coming to Dr. Cheng's office! Upon entering you are welcomed by Riza, the receptionist, who checks you in. There is water to drink and magazines for you to read while the assistants are ready for you. There is also a TV where you can watch movies such as Ice Age, or Finding Nemo and many more. The office also is very neat and clean. When I was called in the assistant, Jessica, sat me down in my room where everything was prepared for my filling. She went over my treatment estimate, my health history and offered a movie for me to watch. Yes ! They have movies !! The one thing I love about this office is that they have intraoral cameras. Dr. Cheng shows you your teeth, what will be done, and at the end shows you the finished result which is always the best part to see. I was a bit nervous because Dr. Cheng had told me I needed several fillings on teeth that didn't hurt at all. I noticed previous reviews saying that they didn't want to do the filling because they did not feel pain there. I felt the same way! However, I figure he went to dental school, this is his job,he knows what's best so I should put my trust in him. Clearly, the intraoral cameras showed me horrifying decay under my old fillings. Who wants to have black stuff under their fillings right ? It was amazing to me to see how this was not hurting me at all. I learned that if it doesn't hurt, it doesn't mean nothing is there ! It will only hurt once the decay had spread to your nerve. And according to Dr. Cheng that is no longer a filling that is now root canal ! I trust Dr. Cheng and his staff. I have now replaced all my silver fillings with white fillings (Composite). Again, this office is just amazing! I definitely recommend it to anyone! PS: I noticed that on the pictures up above you see a playroom and I'm sad to say that it is no longer there. It is now a brand new room. read more

I've tried other dentists' teeth cleaning in Sunnyvale, Mt View and Los Angeles. None can compare with Michael Cheng. They all rush through in about 30 mins cleaning; none were as serious about "DEEP CLEANING" my teeth. Michael even hires dental hygienists to spend almost an hour cleaning my teeth; other dentists don't. His equipment are up to date while others are antiquated. Dr. Cheng has been my dentist for couple of years, I recently have my teeth filled in his new office. I generally hate to see doctors of any kind, but to my surprise, it was a very pleasant experience. The chair was comfortable, the ambience was soothing and his team of staff were friendly, professional, and I never have to wait very long for my appointment. Dr. Cheng sensed how nervous I was and he took time to explain and talk to me through the procedure to ease my doubt and discomfort. One equipment he used in particular was a camera which takes a color picture of my tooth so he can show me exactly what he will be working on. Gums, gums, gums, having healthy gums is vital to healthy teeth, as Dr Cheng taught me on my first visit 6 months ago. He went over the proper method to brush both the gums and teeth. I don't remember my previous dentists ever done that or blocked it out. I had my second visit and he is just as nice. I like hearing my teeth and gums are good. I have been with Dentist for over 5 years, I mostly went for cleaning and regular check up. I am here writing this review is tell how bad the attitude lack of professional spirit of this dentist . Since the first time I visited, Dr. Cheng the dentist try to persuade me to do some fillings which is not recommended by my previous dentist. (I use this dentist purely because my previous dentist relocate to New York. I got transfer to him) Because the holes was so small that they have to drill the hole to make it bigger for fillings, so this is not a must to do. During my last visit 1/7/15, I was thinking to do some filings, so I asked a few questions about the X-ray photos so that I know how is my teeth situation is . The questions was less than 10 mins , there was no other patient waiting. Dr. Cheng was very impatient, and emotional , he told me that I should not ask him about how to read the X-ray photos. This is the first time I met a health care professional with this kind of manner. He informed me that he wanted to stop service me after these questions. I guess the most important is he want to make money from doing my fillings and he could not successfully persuade me. I would not recommend such a dentist with no respect to patients during the conversation and and not willing to explain patient's situation. Be careful if a dentist a always want you to do some fillings which doesn't bother you at all. read more

I recently had a couple cavities filled and my only thought during the process was how impressed I was with the whole ordeal. I had to find another DDS because my insurance changed. I was in a state of dread because, in my estimation, It's so hard to find an excellent dentist! I found Michael Cheng in Sunnyvale, conveniently located near Costco! :) HE AND HIS STAFF ARE EXCELLENT. Professional, state-of-the-art equipment, kind, SMART. The gal at the front desk even let me park my very expensive bike inside the office instead of locking it outside. And she held the door open for me when I was leaving! Generous and kind people over there. You owe it to yourself to make MP Cheng your new DDS if you're looking to find a new one or upgrade your existing...my former DDS was good technically, but didn't have the TOOLS that showed me what my teeth **really** look like (the picture detail of my teeth and gums was astonishing). Only with the proper diagnostic tools, in my opinion, can you get the attention your oral health condition deserves. read more
