Soo I woke up in severe pain, throbbing the works on the verge of tears. Went into the office and the very nice staff got my xrays done, when I was shown my xray I was talked through what I was looking at, Dolores did a very good job explaining my treatment plan to where i could understand what needed to be done and yikes. I needed a tooth pulled, as it was majorly infected. Dr. Hong got me on antibiotics a few days before the surgery and the day of, I was so nervous but his staff where all very gentle with me, got me in the chair and Dr. Hong did his best to reassure me. I was numbed up and check on Dr decided more was needed. One more poke and I was so numb thank God. He got to work quickly as to not give me any anxiety. All I felt was pressure, I couldent detect when the tooth was actually out. Dr. Hong and his team made a very PAINFUL situation as painless as possible from thier end. Excellent service all around! My x Ray showed some other teeth we need to keep an eye on, so ill be back. If u have a chipped or broken tooth dont wait like I did, go in!!! They'll save you a world of pain. BEWARE! Stay away from this dental office at all costs! I had been going to Dr. Hong for over a decade and always trusted his office and staff to take care of me. Over the years, I've gotten many many cavity fillings and never questioned Dr. Hong. I just assumed I had bad teeth or ate too much candy. The last time I visited, he told me I had yet another cavity and DRILLED TOO FAR into my tooth until he hit my nerve. He kept telling me my teeth were soft and that it was essentially my fault. It was so painful, I had to get a pulp cap and pay out of pocket for his mistake. It later got infected and I had to get a root canal. Thankfully I switched dentists and had a more established doctor do my root canal. It wasn't until I switched dentists and realized how poorly Dr. Hong runs his practice, here's why: 1. Lack of transparency on procedures. He doesn't show you the cavity or tooth that needs to be worked on. Most dentists will take a photo or xray, show you the affected tooth, and walk you through the procedure. Dr. Hong will just vaguely say "oh it's a small cavity" and never be transparent about what he's actually doing or the severity of the situation. How do I know if I actually have a cavity? He didn't even warn me that he needed to numb me with shots, he just went and injected me with a needle! This lack of transparency is the main reason I left. 2. Fraudulent claims. His office has submitted wrongful claims over the past years to get reimbursed by insurance for things he didn't even do. This is stealing and is considered fraud. Extremely unethical and shady. They will also give gift cards if you submit a five star review on yelp, essentially bribing their patients for incentivized reviews. 3. Rude and poor bedside manners. When he made a mistake and drilled too far, he never apologized. He doesn't take accountability for his actions and blamed me for having soft teeth. That's no way to run a business. 4. He does a sloppy job and lacks attention to detail. In the past when I had cavity fillings done here, he would rush through them and the filling would be too high or it wouldn't be smoothed down enough. I had an instance where it bothered me so much I had to come back to get it fixed - he seemed annoyed and didn't apologize for that either. Also, when he numbed my gums with shots, he rushed the injection so fast that the medicine dripped out of the syringe and I tasted it throughout my mouth. My new dentist has also commented on how poorly my old cavity fillings were done - Dr. Hong left large gaps between my teeth when the fillings should have closed them to prevent food getting caught between my teeth. 5. Doesn't care about your wellbeing. He was more than happy to keep drilling my teeth and charging me for cavities. He had no interest in helping me improve my oral hygiene. It wasn't until I went to a new dentist who prescribed me with a higher fluoride toothpaste to help with cavities and sensitivity that I realized I could've been treated so much better as a patient here. My new dentist recommended Coco Floss and a waterpik and took the time to educate me on better oral hygiene to prevent cavities. Now I rarely have cavities and my teeth have never been better. Dr. Hong never cared to share any of this information. Those are just a few of the things I noticed and I can't believe I spent years of my life being treated so poorly at this dental office. I only wish I switched dentists sooner, maybe I'd still have more of my actual teeth than fillings. I will say that the only good thing about this office is the hygienist Joan. read more

Dr Hong and his staff have been the best of all the dental care I was getting. Before I moved away from the Bay Area late this year, I was with them for many many years that I could remember. They always worked with my dental insurance and I never had to worry about co-pays. I did visit other dental services occasionally over the years, but none could be compared with Dr. Hong's office's service coverage, and friendly staff. I always looked forward to visiting their office and for me it was like going home for my regular cleanings, fillings. The staff was always very accommodating, and caring. Although I have moved away from Bay Area to the east coast. On one of my recent trip, November 2022, I was passing through SF Airport on way back from overseas trip. I made a special effort to stay extra nights just so I could get my cleaning and filling at Dr. Hong's office. I informed Dolores the front desk about my plan couple of weeks beforehand. Dolores together with Mrs. Kim, they were able to schedule and accommodate both services in the same day and all covered by my insurance. Afterwards, I was so happy on my way flying back to my new home but I also felt very sad that have to leave all my good friends there. Dolores, the receptionist, is always very friendly and helpful. I was having some aching in a tooth that had a root canal and crown. Dr. Hong had done the crown and it came out great. She was able to book me in for the next day which was greatly appreciated. Dr. Hong filed down the crown to improve my bite. So far it's working great. Previously the endodontist had prescribed antibiotics twice even though he didn't see signs of an infection on the x-ray and filed down the tooth once. Nothing helped. He was also very pessimistic about being able to save my tooth which I didn't appreciate. A previous dentist and periodontist had thought the tooth should be pulled and I should get an implant. Dr. Hong was the only one who thought my tooth could be saved. Dr. Hong was very supportive and positive thinking. And did a much better job filing down the tooth to make it not hurt. Dr. Sung J. Hong put a new crown on my back or wisdom tooth last week. I was happy with the new crown. Its a beautiful porcelain crown, looked natural, and felt perfect fit. He doesn't need to send it to an outside lab. As an expert prosthodontist, he made the porcelain crown himself. I had also a filling on my other tooth. He did a beautiful job. I highly recommend Dr. Hong to anyone looking for a real good dentist and/or prosthodontist. read more

I've been coming here for almost a year now after my husband (who is obsessed with his teeth) recommended Dr. Hong. I really appreciate Joan's (dental hygienist) attention to detail when cleaning my teeth and Dr. Hong's precision, efficiency, and gentleness when filling cavities. He's so good that he sometimes doesn't even use novocaine for certain fillings and it doesn't hurt at all. This is a first for me and I think it's a testament to his expertise and experience. He did have to use novocaine on me once and I was impressed that I hardly felt pain during the injection. He always leaves my bite exactly how it was before, which is very important. Stay away!!!!! (zero stars) I went to Dr. Hong for years and all he did was mess up my teeth. My fillings weren't done correctly so underneath them my teeth were rotting. Thank goodness I noticed in time to go to a new doc who was able to salvage my teeth. I had 4 fillings total and 3 had to be dug out and re-done because Dr. Hong didn't drill out the cavity completely. Over the years Dr. Hong's bedside (chairside) manner went barreling downhill. He seemed to always be in a rush. If there's 1 thing I hate more than anything, it's being shoved out the door when I'm paying top dollar for services rendered. I've had many complicated dental issues to deal with including wearing of the teeth, sensitivity, misalignment, and broken/cracked teeth. California Dental Specialties is a high end practice. I found them after researching who offers advanced dental reconstruction expertise for a friend. Dr. Hong was one of only eight in a 50 mile radius who is board certified in Prosthodontics. Among that small group, his qualifications stand out and he teaches at UCSF. I was seen by Dr. Kim for general dentistry work, including deep cleaning, and filling repair. My overall assessment: This is the best dental experience I've ever had. This is an outstanding practice. CUSTOMER SERVICE Front office and administrative personnel were friendly, cheerful and looked like they enjoy their work. Visitors are greeting immediately, and the overall attitude is chipper and positive. After my first procedure, one of the staff made 6 attempts to find a pharmacy that carried a rare prescription. E-mail and phone reminders of appointments were sent on a timely basis. Insurance billing was handled as if on automatic pilot, billing was clearly explained. Appointment scheduling was briskly handled, even last minute changes were accommodated with no drama. LOCATION/FACILITIES The practice is located in a ground floor suite in a Sunnyvale office park with ample parking. The building and suite, down to the cleanliness of the restroom was great. Equipment, tools and facilities appear to be consistent with what a specialist facility would require. PROCEDURE/QUALITY/WORKMANSHIP Dr. Kim gets my highest marks. I have high sensitivity to dental pain and she was deft in her work. At points while she was numbing me, I could not identify when she started or stopped. Dr. Kim's filling work was similarly off the chart (well done). I especially appreciated her attention to detail in terms of the fit of the filling. She was able to improve the feel of my teeth by repeatedly adjusting the shape of the fillings. I also liked how she was able to spot calculus (high spots and edges) and to smooth things out. An analogy: if shaping fillings is like doing bodywork on a car, Dr. Kim's work is what you'd want for a Porsche. BEDSIDE MANNER/FOLLOW-UP Absolutely lovable woman, Dr. Kim. We had fun and interesting conversations, and what stands out is that she clearly cares about patients. I received a follow-up phone call to make sure I was doing well after the procedure. With some doctors, you feel as though you're on an assembly line - time limited, and receiving partial attention. Dr. Kim is patient-focused. Anyone who has read my reviews knows that I would not hesitate to recommend improvement areas. Your teeth couldn't be in better hands! I've been seeing Doctor Hong for over 25 years. The service and expertise has been nothing short of exceptional. From orthodontic treatment, to dental surgery, to fillings and cleanings the care I've received has been top notch. For a brief period at a previous employer I lost Delta Dental coverage which is accepted by CDSG. The new insurance was less than adequate and was not accepted by CDSG. The new dentist I went to was a nightmare, so much so that for a period of time I went to CDSG and paid out of pocket for the quality of care. Dr. Hong is masterful. I've had a problem with my upper two front teeth for 50 years that required bonding and rebonding and repair. The bonding broke down [again!] and I consulted two dentists and an orthodontist. None of them thought they could fix it -- they said the ONLY way to deal with it would be crowns -- not enough tooth left to do anything else. I went to Dr. Hong for a last-chance consult and he did the job perfectly, with rebond and some internal wires -- he even sandblasted the wires to increase the surface area so it would hold. The whole thing took him about an hour and he did it without any anesthesia [I hate needles!] and barely any discomfort at all. This guy saved my two front teeh. Totally amazing. read more

I get extreme anxiety from bad experiences going to the dentist. I went to Dr Hong to have my tooth pulled a molar. Dr Hongs office put me at ease and worked well with my anxious behavior. Dr Hong explained well and the shot (one of my most fears ) didnt hurt. I healed quickly with no complications. I then schedule for the next item on my list to restore my teeth and gums a deep cleaning. I was surprised I was going back into a dentist chair but so far I feel confident in Dr Hongs office. The office was also very clean!! I had a deep cleaning with Joan the hygienist. The first appointment she did oneside. I was do nervous i was sick to my stomach. I heard horror stories of deep cleaning and the pain. Joan was gentle but efficient. My mouth was fine the next day. When I went back for the other side it was a breeze. Two days before Thanksgiving, I woke up with the entire left side of my face swollen due to an abscess. I ended up desperately trying to find a dentist that could see me right away, as the infection was getting worse. I ended up going to the ER where they prescribed me some antibiotics until I could get an appointment. I ended up calling 1-800 Dentist and was guided to Dr. Hongs Office in Sunnyvale. When I arrived, Dolores at the front desk immediately greeted me and had me filled out a quick form. I was seen within just a few minutes! The assistant (I forgot her name) sat me down and made feel very comfortable right off the bat. Dr. Hong came over to chat about what had been going on with my tooth and was very thorough in describing what I needed to get done to get rid of the infection. I was pretty nervous, since I realized the tooth causing my issues needed to be pulled! The procedure was so quick and I didn't even feel any pain. Dr. Hong was super gentle and made sure I was very numb before he started the process! I have to say, I am very pleased with his work and his professionalism. Dr. Hong saved my mouth. Back when I was in college, I did something stupid. Actually, I did a lot of stupid things, but this was pretty bad. I got a cavity, and since I have this immense fear of the dentist, I did nothing about it, thinking that it would just......go away. Sadly, that's not even the stupid part. About a month later I was craving bubble gum, so I popped a giant wad of double bubble into my mouth. All the sudden, I started thinking "I didn't know double bubble was crunchy....." Yea, that was my broken tooth. Gross, sad, horrific. Again, I did nothing. A couple weeks later I woke up at 5am with the most horrible pain in my jaw that I've ever experienced, and went in and was told I needed a root canal (you know, it actually sounds worse than it is). The emergency dentist (this was in another town) gave me some meds and told me to book an appointment with my dentist at home. So I went home, braved the Dentist's office, and listened as he told me that it would take TWO WEEKS for my crown to come in (of course, this was after the 30 minutes of scolding and disbelief that this was the worst cavity he'd ever seen). Although I deserved this punishment, my college/traveling schedule was going to make it really difficult to return again in a fortnight. Cue, Dr. Hong. Dr. Hong not only made me feel super comfortable and put my fears at ease, but he has this magical machine that made my porcelain crown in not two weeks.....but in AN HOUR. He even let us watch it being made. He made sure to explain to me everything he was doing so I wouldn't be scared, and his staff was also super nice and professional. I would definitely recommend Dr. Hong!! And I'll never chew double bubble again. read more

I put off having my last wisdom tooth removed for 8 yrs as I needed a specialist and didn't wanna go, I was nervous about the pain!. I was referred to Dr.Hongs office to see if he could remove the hook wisdom tooth. I was pleased that Dr.Hong removed it at my first visit with no pain and it was SOOO FAST!! I'm not a person who like writing reviews (it's mostly because of my english skills), but this time I have to make exception. I will try to tell you my long story short :) I almost lost my front tooth when I was very young and since then I had to hide my smile (I kept my tooth but it was dead and became darker and ugly). Two years ago I had to make an extraction because of infection (which started after the cleaning at another dentist office), so I've lost my tooth forever.. I've got my temporary denture then and live with it for about a year and a half till it broke :( In the mean time I was looking for somebody to help me with my problem but no one gave me the reasonable resolution for that (because of my crooked bite/occlusion).. I lost my hope until I met Dr. Hong. He fixed my temporary denture in one day (he made it even better than the previous one) and gave me some opportunities to choose to solve the problem!! I was pleasantly surprised by his great ideas!!! He easily explained to me every way to reach the goal. I made my choice few weeks ago and... I'm so happy I did that!!! I have my smile again and I can finally live normally!! If someone have/had the same problem, exactly know what I mean. All staff of The California Dental Specialty Group are extremely friendly and helpful. They react very quickly (same morning I called them with my problem, they asked me to come in!!). Young, at the front desk, not only helped me with the financing (believe me, she exactly know what to do to make you happy) but she supported me all the time!!! Britney was helping Dr. Hong during my treatment and she always was so careful, that I almost forgot that I'm on the dentist chair. I have been going to Dr. Hong for many years now. My family keeps going back because we have built a good relationship with him and his team. Recently I had a chipped tooth and he looked at it and easily came up with a solution for fixing the problem. He has a lot of experience and is very nice and helpful. The chipped tooth was bothering me because you could see it when i smiled and I realized at that point how important having a good dentist is.
