My husband had an extremely disappointing and uncomfortable experience at this store. My husband went in to pick up a large order of Veuve cliquot that had been placed over the phone for a friend's championship celebration. He provided his ID and credit card to the cashier without issue. However, another man -- who was supposedly the owner -- repeatedly double-checked his credentials, even after they had already been verified by the cashier. This unnecessary and prolonged scrutiny made my husband feel not only racially profiled but also criminalized. When my husband politely asked why his ID and card were being checked again, the "owner" offered no explanation, the cashier seeing the tension and tried to mitigate it proceeded to say "there had been fraud in the past and he's just being careful". He then proceeded to ask if he had cash instead. If my card isn't good, then my money shouldn't be either, right? Instead of addressing the concern respectfully, the so called owner dismissed my husband's question, told him he could leave if he didn't like it, and claimed he "knew everyone in the neighborhood." He had no problem leaving. Why do business where your money isn't wanted. It's NYC, there are millions of wine and spirits stores. My husband left and was treated better at another establishment. That kind of attitude is both unprofessional and unacceptable. Customers should be treated with courtesy, not suspicion or hostility. What should have been a simple purchase of high-end champagne turned into a humiliating and frustrating situation. Profiling and treating paying customers this way is unacceptable in 2025. We will never return, and we would strongly caution others about shopping here. Wish I could've given it zero stars. read more

I make a pilgrimage here every holiday season to get my Old New England eggnog. They usually have someone knowledgeable on hand to answer wine questions and the selection is unbeatable in Brooklyn. Quite often there are fun little tastings going on - this week I tried a bourbon from a distillery in Industry City. If I had any feedback it would be to cozy the place up a bit. read more

Michael Towne is a good wine and liquor shop in the BK Heights area. They carry all the big brands you're looking for with liqueurs, liquor, and wine. Their prices are reasonable too for the area. There's also a decent refrigerated section if you're looking to enjoy something ASAP. My favorite part about Michael Towne is their delivery. You can order online or over the phone, and they always deliver within an ~hour which makes things super convenient if you're throwing a party, etc. read more

What we have here is a nice liquor store with a great selection, a super convenient location in the neighborhood, and competitive prices. I can walk to it in two minutes, and despite the neighborhood, not be taxed for the convenience. I suspect that might have something to do with the student population in the St. George Hotel overhead, and if that's the case, fantastic. At the same time, I can still buy a $900 bottle of bourbon or wine if I were so inclined, which I can barely imagine ever being. Michael Towne also had some sort of 2% cash back scheme, which doesn't appear to have a proper name beyond "Are you in our system?", and how that works is you receive a $10 credit for every $500 you spend. It's not the most aggressive frequent shopper club in history, but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye. They also deliver, which could be a mighty convenience if you entertain. read more

The gentleman behind the counter was so nice! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and asked if we needed any help. We both let out a rather open ended "ummmmmmm, yeah!" We explained what we were looking for and he escorted us over to the red wines. The store was really nice, clean, organized and had a wide variety of selections. Best local Liquor store in my area. I actually live in DUMBO and have 2 local liquor stores in my neighborhood but I always prefer going to Michael-Towne. Their staff are friendly and knowledgeable, prices are good and with their 1hr free delivery service, its really hard to go anywhere else. read more

I visit Michael Towne because it stocks certain hard to find wines. The store is located in Brooklyn Heights, and can be reached via subway from Manhattan very easily. If you are a fan of Ken Wright Pinot Noir you will find it at Michael Towne. I have also purchased Clos Du Val 'Stags Leap District' Cabernet, and Ciacci ' Piccolomini' Brunello. Michael Towne has been in business a long time and receives allocations of certain difficult to find wines. The store is neat, the sales associates are helpful, and the prices are very fair. What I don't like is that the owner Jerry runs the place like a concentration camp. He sit's behind security monitors and watches what everybody is doing every second of the day. If you go, travel there "incognito", and pay cash. Little brother is watching. read more

This place scores big points for such a knowledgeable staff that points you in the right direction, not necessarily to the highest price! Every time I've gone in, I'm greeted with genuine smiles and an eagerness to help. Their selection is insane - anything you could ever possibly want is there. If they don't have it, you don't need it. You could seriously walk in there with any request - "I need a white wine that will get me laid tonight!" or "Do you have something that will impress a mother-in-law?" or even "I'd like to buy some cheap swill that will give my friends instant diarrhea" - and you will walk out with exactly what you came there for. read more

This place is super convenient to where we live, so that's why I started going there at first. Now, it's just about the only liquor store I'll go to. Their prices tend to be a tad higher than other liquor stores, but they have some awesome specials each week and a super friendly staff that help make up for slightly higher prices. In fact, if you ask them what's on sale or on special, they'll gladly let you know... and, especially if you're flexible on brand, you'll spend less than if you took the train into Manhattan to make your purchases. Note that recently, the owners have started to renovate the place, so you may have to navigate around a little construction... but I have a feeling that the updated aesthetic will make the store even better. read more

Does convenance win over price? When it does I find myself shopping at the insanely overpriced Towne. An Ok selection, but I find the same brands half the price at Wine Warehouse on 8th or Astor wines in Manhattan. When I don't feel like the subway schlepping I buy here. read more

I walked in based off a quick search of stores in the vicinity of my work (who doesnt like an incentive-ized walk on their lunch break?) Louis greeted me immediately, so I jumped at the opportunity to ask about the BTAC line coming in.. he looked puzzled. Not a good sign from a place that boasts 100+ whiskeys. I backed up, explained the line, who distributed it, etc... and he took my info. I bought a bottle of the Limited Edition Single Barrel Four Roses as well - pricey, but had some decent reviews and I think in a few years, Four Roses will be jumping in status based on the work theyve been doing lately.. but Ill save my Four Roses soapbox for another review. Long story short - I peeked into the other areas but was pressed for time. The wine selection looked great and Ill be returning to peruse as well (not only do I collect bourbons, but I have about 200 bottles of wine). So, this is how it works. Everything is marked up about $5.00 more than in Manhattan. Why you ask? Cause that's what the subway would cost to go and get it, pretty simple really but quite infuriating at the same time. Selection is not bad but sooo over-priced. I would give them zero if I could. I chose "curbside pickup" for my online order because I cannot wear a mask for medical reasons and knew I would need one to go into the store. When I arrived and called as instructed on the website, they insisted I come in, even when I said I was there for curbside pickup (I guess to save them a walk of about 10 steps). When I told them I had chosen outside pickup so I would not have to wear a mask to enter, I got a nasty lecture about endangering their lives (I'm still outside, mind you) and hung up on. It took several calls and unpleasant back and forth with them insisting I put on a mask even while waiting outside although I told him I would put one on when someone arrived. When he finally came out with my order, he started yelling at me about endangering lives and when I pointed out that I was medically exempt, he yelled, "No you are not!" I wonder where he got the medical degree that qualifies him to diagnose a stranger through a store window. read more

This liquor store is conveniently located right outside the Clark Street station (2, 3) trains. Best liquor store in Bklyn Heights. not saying too much since there are so few liquor stores. They close really early on Sunday (7pm). They have a point system, I think its suppose to be 1 point for every $1 you spend but for some reason it never really adds up. If management is reading this, you need to have some sort of a beer selection, as its only wine and spirits. They usually have someone inside offering free samples of some spirit or wine so if you want a quick sip before getting on the Clark Street subway station run in here. read more

Disappointed in the new renovation. All the hard liquor is behind the counter and the cashiers have to reach for what you want. Must be a hassle for them. As a customer I like to browse, touch the bottles and read labels. If I can't do that I'll go elsewhere. I actually pointed to a bottle, it was put in a bag and when I got home it was not what I asked for. Returning was a hassle, owner did not even come out from behind his corner perch behind the counter to speak to me about the problem/return. The new design makes me think they might as well put up a bullet proof window, guard dog, and armed guard at the door for all the whinos in Brooklyn Heights trying to steal Colt 45. Otherwise, with that said the staff has always been nice to me for 25 years I've been a customer. read more

Dreadful selection at worse prices. The louche promotional window displays should be enough to tell you you are not in good hands. Walk the three blocks to Montague Wine and Spirits, where the pleasant and knowledgeable staff can direct you to lovely, well-priced wines from quality importers. Heights Chateau is farther but also very good, with a wide selection and fair pricing. Or, if you don't mind taking the 2/3 a few stops, just go to Chambers Street Wines and be done with it. read more

Wandered into Michael Towne Wines & Spirits on a Saturday afternoon and wound up spending over an *hour* in the store with the knowledgeable and friendly staff. Warren B. was especially helpful and he explained everything from the vintages, to pricing, and then gave us his recommendations. One of his top picks was a $5.99 chardonnay that was shockingly good.... you will have to go into the store to find out which one it is! Another fun fact that he passed along: Michael's was the fifth establishment to receive a liquor license in New York City To sum up the experience, the store has great staff, fair prices, and a convenient location. Great selection including super-rare scotch offerings. Easy to work with, friendly sales people who asked the right questions and knew what questions not to ask! On line system was easy to use, and they are great about dealing with user-errors. I had to cancel a large order two days after it was placed and they had no problems. Decent enough wine shop for the Brooklyn Heights crowd - although nothing compared to Montague Wine & Spirits a few blocks away. This is a very commercial wine shop with all the global brands so don't expect to get your geek on here. But if you are in the hood and don't want to walk to Montague this will do fine. read more

I have to say, my opinion of MT has greatly improved. I've spied a big wall of bourbon which is totally impressive. I recently also purchased a very hard to find vodka and got a terrific deal on a pink Gruet. The staff at the register has improved and they are nice. This is my go-to wine shop in the neighborhood. It's conveniently located by the Clark Street 2/3 subway stop and their selection is vast and reasonably priced. Their guys are quite knowledgeable if you need help but I'm a creature of habit and have my favorite under $20 bottles nailed down: the Gascón Malbec, Cusomano Nero d'Avola and NV Lini 910 Lambrusco. If you live in the neighborhood, join their rewards program. This way you won't have to show ID every time you make a purchase, and every now and then, you'll rack up enough points for a free bottle. read more

I went to Michael Towne to buy 12 bottles of wine so I could get the 20%-off-for-12 discount (sale items don't get the 20% discount, but count toward the 12). The staff was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and happy to recommend excellent but affordable wines. In addition, they included, at no cost, two 6-pack wine bags to ease the trek home.
