After 10 years it's about time I updated my review! Michaels has been the place I frequent for most everything that requires a little bit of creativity. From 2020 pandemic supplies like chalks, sidewalk spray paint and stencils. To ribbons, bows, and all the Holiday decor you can shake a jingle bell at. Michaels is a treasure trove of goodness and yes, you may take a minute to locate it all but don't give up! The store staff is always pleasant and more than happy to help. I especially like the buy online / pickup curbside feature. That's one perk of Covid I hope never goes away! My favorite time of year - Halloween! - is now here! I came here looking for a scrapbook album, acid free glue, and stickers. My mom came along with me and had a coupon which I put to good use. I walked in and to the left to check out the albums and stickers. I couldn't find anyone to help so I stood in line and asked a cashier about my coupon and to get a price check. I found a great, sparkly album. I found the right glue, eventually. I didn't find any stickers in my price range that wowed me so I put them back. I have been shopping at this store for a long time, but over the past year and a half or so, I have been doing a lot of crafts and shop here several times a month. The other day I needed an item to finish some projects, but I couldn't leave home because of my daughter. I decided to use the same day delivery option. I ordered it in the morning, and at 4:20, I got an email saying it was processed and waiting for the driver. I still had not received it by 7:30, so I called the store. The manager told me the deliveries are made through Instacart, so they did not have a way to check on it, but that it should have been picked up. After some back and forth, with her checking to see if there was a way to get ahold of Instacart, she had an employee deliver it. I really appreciated her assistance and was able to finish the projects. read more

Michaels is definitely one of my favorite stores and you can definitely find me visiting Michaels at least once a month. I am a pretty crafty person and sometimes I'm one of those weirdos who like to come in just to get ideas, but end up spending money on cool things here. This Michael's is probably my favorite Michael's in town. The store is always clean and organized and some people think this store is just for crafting, but you can buy a bunch of things for kids and there's tons of cute decorations for your home. I can literally stay at this store for more than an hour without even noticing the time and I know that's bad, but why do you have to have eye popping things that continue to draw me to your store? haha :-) Prices are not too bad and if you don't have any current crafting projects then you might end up having a new project after you leave this store, that's how convincing this place is without anyone even telling you anything. The only reason I'm giving them three stars is the check out lines are always ridiculous. Otherwise it is the go to place in the Northwest for craft supplies. They always seem to have what I need and their selection is good. If you are into scrapbooks, jewelry making, crochet and knitting they have a decent selection. Craft paint, beads and seasonal decorations are always abundant. If you need a bow made they will do that for you too. They also have a large framing department with a wide variety of do it yourself or custom. One bummer is they do not carry fabric nor do they have any sewing supplies, maybe a few buttons. As an elementary school teacher, I turn to Michaels for supplies for quite a few of my classroom projects. This is a great place to pick up all different types of yarn for you knitters and crochet fans. I just use it for classroom projects but they have all different textures and weights to make clothing and blankets, too. Artists can pick up all different types of paints and dyes. I tend to stick with the washable Tempera paints and the spray paints for class projects, but they have acrylic paint, puff paint to make custom t-shirts, even paints to pain models and wood projects. I'm not a big scrapbooker, but their selection of fancy papers, stamps, stickers, and cutouts would keep a scrapbooker happy for weeks on end. My mom buys these to make memory books for her puppies. We've used their custom framing services many times and the framing has always been done beautifully, very high quality craftsmanship which you can view all over the walls of my house and my mom's house. This is also a great place to pick up a Rainbow Loom and it has the best variety of bands and supplies for it that I've seen in Bakersfield. If you don't know about Rainbow Looms, you probably don't have young kids. It is HUGE up in the Bay Area and down in Los Angeles and is just starting to hit big with the Bakersfield kids. I have one and am getting pretty good at making bracelets and jewelry with them. If you're looking for ribbon or silk flowers or even candy making supplies you'll be in hog heaven here. And around Christmas time they have an extensive selection of Christmas ornaments and decorations. And - BIG bonus for me - they give a 15% discount to teachers! They are ALWAYS having big coupon sales. If you're an AARP member, you can get a 10% discount by showing your membership card every Tuesday. Anybody can find coupons in the local paper's advertising section or print them out online at Michaels.com, so you rarely have to pay full price for anything! I am not so crafty but this store makes me wish I were more so! I love the beads and the stickers... and the baking area. It is wrong to buy the bags of chocolate melts to just eat like that? I must not be the only one. :) Staff seemed friendly enough but sparse. You can never find one when you need one! As a result or maybe from lack of stock, I did not find what I went in for but... I could not resist the stickers for $1 (flamingos!!) I found for cards that I like to give out. In addition, I grabbed large candles, 3 for $10! I could not believe it. GOOD quality too. Summer scents. I am burning a Sicilian Orange one in my kitchen right now and it is great! I cannot stand cheap candles and this is not of cheap quality. Compare $2.67 each to $29 from Yankee Candle. They burn nicely and evenly. I also snagged a set of really nice Himalayan rock tea light candle holders. Down to $6 from $17. Heavy but make really nice gifts and seem to be in style these days. I see these everywhere. I saw lots of things at 60% off like storage totes, summer outdoor cushions, etc. The store is huge and was very clean. Mega isles of "stuff" like candies and other snacks to tempt you in the line up on the way out. TIP - make sure and quickly grab from on line a 20% off coupon. I have always been a fan of Michaels - ever since I was a kid! :) There's bound to be a Michaels in every large city...so of course, I found one in Bakersfield, and SO GLAD I did. Crafts? Art Projects? Hobbies? Christmas decorations? Home decor? Custom frames? This store has it ALL! I walk in and I can spend at least 1 hour looking at all the various things that are available here. So many people will walk in and want to buy just one item - but some way or other, they will walk out with 5+ items they really didn't mean to buy! This store really draws you in with all the creative items available to decorate your home, or just do arts/crafts/baking as hobbies. It's definitely a "girlie" store and quite fun :) I've bought things from candles, candle holders, Christmas wreaths, ribbon, wooden block letters, cellophane, etc. Just recently, I went on a Sunday when there was a huge 70% off sale on all Christmas ribbon. I bought such pretty ribbon for $0.89 to $1.49!!! Honestly, I hate shopping and Michaels is why. To start, the store is packed with stuff with very little room to walk the aisles. This leads to all kinds of issues for customers. They have tiny shopping carts, as if that makes you happier, but most areas in the store can't accommodate even those two abreast. There were many areas where items were out of stock. This is not cool. So we had to ask the staff about it. The staff were not friendly. In the middle of it all, I had to make a pit stop in the restroom, my wife went too. We agreed, the restrooms reeked like a porta potty at a punk rock concert. Like gag me with a spoon. So it wasn't great. Oh, did I tell you about the Disneyland style wrap around check out line? Yep. Michaels could be great if they stocked up, trained the staff better, and organized a little. read more

The difference between this and Hobby Lobby is it's smaller, more intimate, and you can surprisingly find mostly everything they have but on a smaller scale. Smiles, respect and kindness go a very long way. I have now had two negative experiences at this location. I blew off the first rude employee at this location because it was close to the holidays and people are often tired, stressed and overworked what today's excuse for mopey faced people who couldn't smile or make eye contact? I brought in a recently broken frame to the frame counter to see if maybe I had it made there. I had two prints with identical frames hanging in one of my powder rooms and my sons broke one so I was hoping to just be able to have them make up a new one. At the counter I encountered (words used very deliberately, as I was certainly greeted) a very surly woman who looked irritated and bored. I showed her the frame and asked her if the had framing that matched and if she she thought that maybe it was made there. Here response was "No, we don't make cheap things like this here we only use wood." I stood for a second waiting for a but I would be happy to see if we can find something close, offer to help or even just a laugh but she just stared at me emotionless. I stared back, not really knowing how to respond. My 7 year was equally shocked. Finally, I turned away and blurted out to my son (not loud) that "Maybe, HobbyLobby will help us." Still no comment, response or even signs of life from the lady behind the counter. As I turned to walk away and right as I made a my comment another Michael's employed was right behind me. Both my son and I smiled at her...no response, in fact that must have been the most serious clipboard in the history of the world. Her eyes were so glued that I doubt that a purple polka dotted elephant roller skating through the store would have caught her attention. Customer service 101 "Greet and Smile." Training desperately needed at this location. Gave two stars instead of just one because of a cordial man at the frame desk last time who at least tried to be helpful. read more

It's true what the previous reviewer said. They ALWAYS have coupons, so don't buy ANYTHING at full price unless you desperately HAVE to. Join their email list for special offers every week. I've gotten custom framing done here twice and I have been very happy with the results. Again, wait for the 50-60% off deal for custom framing. As for as their selection goes, it's definitely better than other craft stores in Bakersfield, albiet a bit pricer than JoAnn's or Beverley's (downtown). Called and asked them about it and they said they knew they were out of the ones I wanted and I could either keep what I had or they could give me less of the bigger ones. So we get there and I asked why they knew they were out and instead of telling me they were out they just gave me the wrong size thinking I wouldn't notice. She just barked back at me super rude about how busy they are and how many orders they have to deal with. Won't be ordering from or shopping there again. I love Michael's, I really do. But when you go somewhere and everyone who is on the floor tells you the wrong isle to find what you're looking for, it's irritating. I then waited in line (had 6 people in front of me and 6 behind me) to ask where it was, in hopes that they would grab one for me, or allow me to go grab it while they rung up my other items. They called the manager on their headset and she told me it was on isle 59. I apologized and told them I've had a long day and asked if they would allow me to grab one while they rang up my other items, and the cashier just blankly stared at me.... And kept repeating, "it's on isle 59." It was rude and horrible customer service. I'm very patient with things like this most of the time, but it was very frustrating. read more
