B&N is one of my go-to places to get some homework done when the libraries are closed. The WiFi is reliable and it's not usually hard to find a seat at the cafe. However, I always need to make sure I charge my laptop beforehand since outlets are limited. I usually prefer to borrow books from the library or just read the ebook, but if I fall in love with a book then I'll get my own copy for my collection. Reading physical copies of the books hits so much different than reading them digitally. read more

Who doesn't love strolling around the bookstore? Yes, the prices aren't the fairest BUT there is no experience like walking around & finding all the books you could ever want. I adore their different sections, like the games, kids area & the front of the store that has collectibles & home decor. It's an amazing feel. I come here as often as I can simply for the ambience. Almost all of the people who work here are pleasant & helpful. Sometimes there will be a couple who aren't the most helpful but not all the time. I do love a good bookstore. Unfortunately, Bakersfield has lost most of it's locally owned bookshops. And when you're in a pinch for a book, B&N is really your only source. We came to B&N to find a children's book for a friend's baby shower. The selection was nice and they do a fantastic job creating a bright space for kids. But the prices - oh those prices! The one thing I didn't love was that the children's books seemed hapharzadly placed. We couldn't tell if they were alphabetical by Title or Author or organized by type. Everything was everywhere. I would love to come in and grab cookbooks and other books and go sit in a comfy chair and decide which one I would like to buy. I came for the 50% off hardcover book sale and it was crowded! Everyone came for the sale. I found some great children's books I've been eyeing. They also have libros en español. I bought a book that wasn't hardcover and accidentally paid full price, but I'm not even mad. The staff were extremely friendly and helped me find the books I was looking for. I wish they have more bilingual children's books in other languages other than Spanish. I love how Barnes and Nobles also have games and gifts for book lovers, such as totes, journals, and planners. I wanted to give the biggest thanks to the employees from the Bakersfield location. They are honestly amazing! I called because I was looking for a specific Lego set that is retired and was showing up as "in stock" at the Bakersfield location. I wanted to make sure they had it before making the trip to that location to pick it up. Julie went above and beyond throughout our entire interaction and I cannot thank her enough. She finally located the set for me and I asked her if there was any way that it could be placed on hold for me until Saturday. She confirmed that it could and I explained that I would be there to pick it up that day since I lived in Ventura and would not have time to stop by on Friday after work before they closed. Julie asked me if I was already making the trip to Bakersfield and I told her that I wasn't, that I was only making the drive to pick up that set specifically. Julie then said that could ask her manager if they could manifest the set and send it over to the Ventura location so that I would not have to make the trip to Bakersfield. She explained that it wasn't a guarantee as it needed to be approved by both stores, the one shipping it and the one receiving it. I completely understood and I was so appreciative of her even trying. She took down my information and said that I would get a call back tomorrow telling me whether it was approved or not. A couple hours later she called me back to tell me it was approved and would be shipped the next day. I honestly cannot express how thankful I am, not only did Julie go above and beyond, but she did so without me even having to ask. This is what spectacular customer service is all about. I probably visit B&N at least 5x a year and I actually love B&N. It's funny how some people probably think this place is just a nerdy book store and probably think the setting is somewhat like a library setting when in fact, they don't just sell books here. This place is packed with so much cool things. First, you have a little coffee shop setup in the front corner of your entry and they serve food and beverages. They also sell a bunch of other items that you would not expect to buy at a bookstore. You can find anywhere from home decor to toys to record discs. I like coming in to check out the new board games and puzzles they have since I believe this is one of the places that have so much board games available. The downside to the board games is that the prices are a little higher versus Walmart and other department stores. I also like coming in for workbooks for the kids to do during the summer when they're not in school or even the puzzle books to keep the kid's brains active. This bookstore is a pretty good size store and they have everything you can think of. From so many different types of literature to cook books to comics and magazines, but you can guarantee there's a book for everyone here. The place is always busy and if you take advantage of their membership then you'll get discounts throughout the year and even some percentage discount on every visit. read more

I like coming to this book store as it has just about every genre available with up to date and popular books in stock. And they will order it for you if not in stock with no commitments. As with most Barnes & Noble, there are chairs of different type throughout for one to sit comfortably to read and relax which I take advantage of. I saw discounted books too in a separate section to purchase. Plus children's books has their own large section with kiddie chairs and table opposite side to where the magazines wall rack with bench sitting are. There are guest authors who come for book readings like Lavar Burton awhile back. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff providing excellent service. Bookstore restrooms are normally the cleanest of all establishments but the ones in this store where on more than one occasion it was slightly above average. Not dirty but I seen recent coffee stains on the floor along with some unusual oder. Maybe the patrons dressed in gym clothes from next door large gym where they would come after working out with body oder for refreshments inside may have contribute to it. Other than Starbucks inside, there are no eateries within the bookstore and gym parking lot but less than a block away resides Firestone Grill, one of the best tri-tips eatery in town. Barnes & Noble has always been one of my favorite places to go. What I especially like about B&N is the incredibly broad selection of non-book items they carry. I had come to look for the Invincible comic, but the employee I asked told me they had sold out of them all, which was fine. Because of that, I spent my time looking around the vinyl records, Funko Pops, and Pokemon card sections as I usually do. I was able to pick up this cute Pikachu Funko Pop for under $10! The box was damaged when I bought it but that was totally okay because it gave me a valid reason to unbox him. Another great visit! read more

Service!! I was locked out 5 min. Before closing time on Christmas Eve. I waited outside in the cold to ask what stores I could find Barnes and Noble gift cards before Christmas. One employee in particular which I assume was the manager because while I was sitting out there, she was letting the last few customers out. The first time she came to the door to let a customer out and told me the store was closed (which it wasn't) i showed her the time on my watch and asked her if I could just buy the gift card because it was again. Christmas freaking Eve.. after that I waited for her to come back to the door so I could ask where to find gift cards other than the actual store. She probably figured I was going to keep asking to let me in, because when she came to let the workers out they all kept telling me that they were closed. Which I already knew because I was sitting outside since before they were closed. I just ignored how rude they were and directed my attention towards the Manager, which I had already been interacting with.. I asked her why she wouldn't talk to me and ignored what I was trying to say everytime she came to let someone out. And she continued saying that she couldn't let me in and I told her I just wanted to ask where else I could go and that she made me wait outside and was avoiding me for absolutely no reason. I was immediately offended and wouldn't recommend anyone get their books from this Barnes and Noble. Sadly this is the ONLY Barnes and Noble in Bakersfield. Hopefully someone takes this review in to consideration because I'm sure I'm not the only one who has came across the rudeness of the workers at this Barnes and Noble. I felt like it was mostly the Manager but I got the same bad energy from all the workers as they exited. read more

This is my "happy place." Every time I stop by I remember how much I love reading. This store is clean and well organize. If I need assistance there are more than enough staff waiting to help out in my search for the perfect book/item. And if by any chance they don't have it in the store, they will gladly mail it to you at no additional cost! They not only sell books, but they have a toy section that mimics a toy store. Today I was trying to buy a planner (as one does in December) and I found one I loved but it didn't have any kind of price tag on it. Of course it was the only one of its kind. Lots to choose from and well kept. Staff is very helpful. Even getting rid of an odd customer that was following my friend around the store, saying odd things. We're both magnets to odd people. I swear. We still liked the place. Seating for those needing a break or aren't wanting to walk around with because they're not much a book person. Tsk. ;) I've noticed that with the times, what with Amazon and e-books, that bookstores are on the endangered species list. Only the large ones are still standing. And even then, they often have other forms of entertainment and novelties taking up a vast part of the store to get people to come in, like toys, games and movies. They're going the route of gaming stores and music stores. You gotta shovel in more other stuff like a headshop that sells vinyls and old nik-naks. Painful irony of seeing them selling novelties for things based in books that people buy but don't read. It's an odd thing. This book store has never failed to have whatever book it is that I have heard about an decided to purchase. The books do seem to be priced somewhat high. That is not a big deal with me, as like I said, they have always had what I need, We have bought huge Atlases, they are quite pricey, also some fiction and historical books. It seems to me that all the people working at big book stores are always very nice. And that observation certainly includes the people at this store. If I bought more books, I might have to concern myself with price, but for the four to six times I come here a year, I will not sweat prices. read more

All I got for ya are rating points on the star system: -1 star for being a mega-chain. +2 stars for a decent selection of CDs, books, magazines and gifties. +3 stars for the cafe being the only halfway cool hangout I could find in this part of town. -1 star because you have to pay for the wireless (the cheapest rate is $2.99 for a few hours) --------- Total 3 stars I did pick up really tasty Miles and Mingus CDs here. The book store is fine but not so much with the Starbucks inside. It's my understanding that the cafe is owned and operated by the B&N. When we visited the tables were 80% full of people on their laps tops. A couple of tables hadn't been bused. One employee was deep in conversation with her coworker when we approached the counter.I had to clean off my own table. Our drink orders were fine but the food selection was lacking. It was lunch time and there was only a few savory items that could be considered lunch. No cold sandwiches, no cute lunch packages. Only a Mediterranean Quiche and chicken Gumbo soup. My mom ordered a croissant which wasn't warmed up and I ordered a savory zucchini bar which tasted only of Parmesan cheese and was a bit stale. Very sad really. There was a time when Bakersfield had a plethora of bookstores, both large and small. Sadly over time, all but B&N have been forced to close their doors. Although I enjoy reading on my iPad, it doesn't compare to having a book in hand. In addition to being a nice escape, I really the special events held at this location. The latest one that I attended was a reading by LaVar Burton and it was truly a pleasure to be in his presence. They've had book signings as well, but my aversion of crowds has kept me away from them. The store itself used to have overstuffed chairs for customers to enjoy, but those have long been replaced by hard wooden chairs and in lesser numbers. The store itself is pretty clean and the staff has always been more than helpful. There's a small cafe serving Starbucks coffee that comes with its own contingent of college students desperately attempting to cram information into their heads, as well as people meeting face to face for the first time after meeting on Tindr or Facebook. read more
