The Rachel is to die for. This is the best authentic Jewish deli in the area, hands down. Michael's is a hole in the wall and hard to miss if you're not looking carefully, but it's a must try. I really love this spot. It's very low key. My boyfriend and I were starving and we each ordered corned beef reubens with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing...they were really delicious and we were very satisfied, I think they cost around 10$ a pop. We also had the knishes, the pastrami and the "krazy knish" (the name really drew us in) of moxie chicken. They were both tasty, although the pastrami one was a bit greasy. Thrilled to start trying the Jewish style delis in the Boston area. Fantastic chicken noodle soup, tuna salad is excellent, great knishes, and of course...what about the pastrami? The pastrami was very good, but even considering that I didn't order it lean, today it was quite fatty. That being said, great flavor, and this seems like a great find. I have heard so much about Michael's and have wanted to try it for some time. They are closed on Saturdays, (but serve bacon & sausage sandwiches?), so it has taken some time to eat here. On our visit, we had some breakfast sandwiches and they were just fine. The nova they serve is straight from a plastic package, adequate, but nothing special. The staff was very friendly! I am sorry for the rating I am giving but: Cash only ? I find cash only businesses very inconvenient. This only benefits the owner. The interior has a serous lack of style & limited seating. The display cases are sparsely filled with only a few items, not a very attractive, or appetizing display. After all I heard, I guess I just expected more. Corned beef is very tender and lean and pastrami is a tad salty and thin compared to "New York" style. Brisket is similar to the corned beef and goes well with the horseradish sauce. Excellent Reubens and Rachels. Multiple types of potato salads, great for a side. Knishes are traditional in a variety of styles. There are few places in Brookline that I haven't eaten at, and I've been meaning to get to Michael's. I stopped here after a meeting and knew that I wanted pastrami and spicy mustard. This spot serves up a great variety of unique and traditional deli sandwiches. I used to live in Brookline and can't believe I didn't try this spot out until over a year after moving to the area. I went for lunch today and had the privilege to meet the owner. He was extremely friendly and welcoming, making us feel like long-time customers. We ordered a good amount of food including the Thanksgiving sandwich (hot turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing), the "Disheveled" Brisket, a corned beef Reuben, potato knish, coleslaw, potato salad, noodle pudding, and their special S'mores knish. My personal favorite was the Thanksgiving sandwich. The stuffing tasted like my favorite side dish and it was served on delicious Challah bread. The half sour pickles that came with it were amazing. I was a huge fan of the potato knish. It might be the best one I've ever had! It was all very good, fresh food served by an extremely passionate staff. We are no doubt going back soon! BREAD TOO THICK?? I SAY "YES". Im just going to say it - this is the thickest bread I've ever had at a legit deli. In my opinion - it takes away from the sandwich. Food-wise, that is the only thing I would change at Michael's. Their pastrami and cornbeef are as-good-as it gets in my opinion. I lived in NYC for years and frequented many a Jewish deli there, and Michael's is right there. But again - the bread?? Its great bread but...sliced too thick I say. Something to consider! I just feel it hurts the sandwich, which is something no one wants to see. New ownership-improvement for personality for sure..but the food is suffering. Coleslaw has NO flavor; chicken salad is too chunky and falls out of the bread, the quality of the food has been affected to the negative, regretfully. Love the new owner Steve..but he is NOT maintaining the quality Michael built with great attention. I'm going way less than I used to as a result and am disappointed in seeing this. You will get new patrons..but you are also losing long time customers because of the changes. Oh and the sandwhiches are at least 1/3 smaller than before the management changeover. I'm from Providence, and every time someone I know needs a ride to Logan, I volunteer because I know I'm going to be having lunch here. I ordered a hot half pastrami, half corned beef with Swiss on rye, some half sour and spicy garlic pickles, and just to gild the lily , a chopped brisket knish...all were fantastic..., no, perfect! The staff were all friendly, going out of their way to offer opinions, and smiles. The ambiance was warm and broken in, just like a favorite sweatshirt. The only beef I have with them is that I have to drive an hour to get there, but I immediately forget that the moment I take my first bite. Can't recommend this place more. Go now! read more

This is one of my favorite places for a quick and delicious lunch -- corned beef Rachel, cream soda, yum. As others have commented, the old reviews about unfriendliness no longer apply at all. To the contrary, this is a tremendously friendly place. I come in for an early weekend lunch with my son (who's too young for corned beef but will be a regular someday), counter staff always have a smile for him, then I set him up in a high chair and feed him food from home while I have my sandwich and he grins at the other customers. Some places go out of their way to be unfriendly to babies (e.g., by making us leave stroller out in the rain when the place is empty), some are neutral, and some are a pleasure. This one's a pleasure. That made Michael's a natural choice for catering bagels/lox/whitefish for my son's first birthday party, and they did a great job. The owner was out of town when I called, but he followed up by email and phone in minutes, set up the order on short notice, and was slicing the last bagel as I walked in to pick up a gorgeous and delicious platter. It cost more than it would have to buy a few dozen bagels and a pack of lox from Bruegger's, but deservedly so; this was high quality stuff and really helped make the party festive. Will be back for both lunch and catering. Great food, great place. And I heard they may be adding seats! read more
