been here twice, first time was one of the most delicious reubens i ever had. The pickles here are also great, they are traditional only brine pickles not vinegar pickles. (some people may not enjoy this though) Today, The reuben i got was so subpar. The corned beef is tough, chewy, the fat is not rendered out well enough. I think it just wasn't cooked long enough or as long as usual. Or perhaps they didn't cut it thin enough? I'm not sure but it is not great. Definitely not like the first sandwich i got, which was really tasty. I'm unfortunately leaving a three star because of inconsistency. Literally the best authentic Jewish deli around hands down, no questions asked, need I say more. *CASH ONLY* I always go to old faithful, the Reuben and it is insane and melts in my mouth. I love the latkes and my husband is a fan of the potato salad. They also have homemade pickles they include with the sandwiches. In addition to getting sandwiches they do sell their meats, various sides, and do catering. Again any traditional Jewish dish, they have it. There is some seating inside but you can pop in and order the sandwiches or sides or even call ahead, which is awesome. read more

I've wanted to stop in at Michael's many times as my office is in Allston, but never get lucky with parking. Today I stopped in at Trader Joe's across the street and was already parked there so I thought, today is the day (even though I've already had lunch). I ordered two knishes, beef and pastrami. Honestly, the first time I've ever had one and I would give this place 10 stars if I could. They were extremely satisfying & filling, and most of all, they were delicious. Ever since I saw the episode with Anthony Bourdain & Howie Carr eating here, it's been on my list. Been going to Michael's for years now. The worst things that's ever happened is MAYBE the sandwich is not totally hot or was a little haphazardly assembled If they're really busy, but it's always amazing regardless. The deli items are worth trying including the kugel (sp?), knishes, stuffed cabbage, pickles etc. BRING CASH. I grew up loving corned beef sandwiches from Jack & Marion's and Rubin's, but these days Coolidge Corner is a schlep for me. But I head into Dana-Farber 5 days a week for radiation treatment, so I stopped by Michael's on the way in and left with some corned beef and a couple of meat knishes. The corned beef is simply fantastic. The texture is perfect, and the taste is exactly what I'm looking for: the right amount of brining, and not overly salty. Just delicious. Definitely among the best if you're jonesing for a pastrami or reuben sandwich. I can't speak to the other deli items but during my wait today, that's what everyone ordered. The actual deli selection appears to be significantly pared down, or maybe it's being held out back somewhere? Something about the sun shining and early days of spring that puts me in the mood for a delicious deli sandwich. Found this hole in the wall joint in Coolidge corner and they did not disappoint! I got an Italian sub with the works and hots. Bread was nice and crunchy, which didn't get soggy by the time I got around to eating my sandwich over an hour later. Their specialty is corned beef and Pastrami which as a salty meat lover is right down my alley. Will definitely be back to try more! They only give a crap about their product here, not lookin' fancy. If it keeps their prices low, fine by me. Side-street NYC deli feel. Service: Pretty good and straight forward. I get here sometimes about 15-20 minutes before they close, and they often will try to string together something delicious -- even sometimes make it hot despite them powering things down. I wish they did stay open a little later than 5pm, but hey it's a deli. Food: Pretty dang good proteins, breads, condiments, and toppings. Nuff said. We had the BLT, Thorty Black and Gold and the J's Sexy Grilled Cheese. The half BLT, bacon was fresh and cooked perfect according to my wife. My daughter had the grilled cheese but she let me have a bite. Great amount of cheese with a new sweet taste from the jelly. I'll get that next time. The Thorty was great. The pastrami was fresh and not dry with a perfect amount of spice to it. The sauce added to the taste of the sandwich. The pickle was different. I'm use to the classic speared dill pickles from a bottle so I will not comment on the pickle other than it was fresh just like everything else. Mediocre at best. I ordered a lean corned beef A kugel and a side of half sour pickles, Presentation wise it all *looked* great but the taste was just off. The half sour pickles were soo incredibly salty, they were also not as crunchy as you'd like, rather soft as if they had been left in a bit too long. In my opinion the corned beef was shaved too thin so it crumbled in your mouth....not in a good way. The cheese to noodle ratio in the kugel was way too high, made me feel like i was just eating a bowl of ricotta. Just to be clear... Although the rating might indicate 3 stars I am giving this deli a 3.5 rating. For whatever reason Yelp does not allow for us to give half star ratings. Ok,enough about Yelps flawed rating system! I first found out about Michael's Deli a few years ago via a post on Linkedin. As I indicated to Pete (I believe that was his name) the manager of the place. I made the 2 and a half hour trek to check out the pastrami sandwich which I saw featured in the photo. Although the meats were delicious , the rye bread was fresh, the pickles were tasty and the cole slaw was creamy and flavorful I had two problems with my experience with Michaels Deli. First off the photo which I saw was false advertisement. The meats were not nearly as plentiful or piled as high with what I saw in the original photo. I literally thought this sandwich would be a meal in itself. Id be generous if I said that the sandwich that I received maybe had half the amount of meat in comparison to what I saw on the photo. Leading me to purchase a second sandwich so I could get my fill. Also the prices are very high for the portions that you receive. Lastly while we are on the topic of price. Just stopped in for the first time in a couple of years. I ordered a half pastrami sandwich which was so tiny. A few pieces of pastrami and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand! The menu price was $6.29 but the cashier charged me close to $8. I questioned him and he said they were adding .50 and tax, but that only comes out to $7. He overcharged me. It wasn't even hot. To say this place was a massive letdown would be the understatement of the century. Staff was incredibly rude, the customers waiting in line were just as rude and more important than the next. As for the food probably one of the worst sandwiches I have ever had. Small sub roll with a couple of slices of meat. Not sure where their definition of overstuffed comes from but it's not from Webster's. Cash only operation and it wasn't cheap. 50 bucks for two sandwiches, a knish, and some latke. OHHHHH man, I have found the place for my jewish deli meat fix. Corned Beef here is no joke. I got the Corned Beef Reuben and The Boy got a NY Corned Beef Sandwich. These sandwiches are HUGE and chock full of perfectly succulent delicious Corned Beef. All sandwiches come with pickles; I got an extra order because I love pickles - and I'm glad I did. These were delicious half sours. Michael's is cash-only and the staff is very friendly and passionate about what they do and the food they serve! Don't have cash? We didn't either. The cashier happily took and placed our order and directed us to the Capital One ATM down the street and let us settle our bill after we came back. I look forward to returning to try the pastrami, even the Italian sandwich, knishes, and obviously to devour more pickles. read more

Brendan and Becca: Re: COVID precautions. Restaurant was top notch. Very safe. Masks, Gloves, Take Out only. We have been meaning to try this place for about a year, but haven't been able to make it work, so we were very glad to be able to get our hands on some of their delicatessen delights. We are huge fans of Corned Beef and other traditional "Jewish Deli" staples Becca ordered a standard Corned Beef sandwich with Russian Dressing Brendan meant to get Corned Beef and Brisket to get a sample of multiple things, but accidentally ordered a "Michael", which was roast beef and brisket. Not what I wanted, but completely my fault. To cut to the chase before full description, I will say sandwiches were very good, accompaniments left room for improvement, but the biggest flaw is that we weren't able to eat the sandwiches immediately, but rather a few hours later. Corned beef was fairly lean and delicious. Well seasoned and moist without being overly fatty. Rye bread was excellent a CRUCIAL component to a sandwich as simple as Corned Beef. Roast Beef and Brisket were both delicious. Again, flavorful and well-executed. RyE bread again was excellent here. For the short comings, the side of cole slaw was somewhat disappointing. Overall, not too sweet and not overdressed, nice crunch, but portion seemed fairly small. Could have used slightly more salt and just more of it. Horseradish sauce was mostly mayonnaise, which isn't a problem, but could have used more kick. Similarly, Russian dressing needed more flavor. Overall, great sandwiches and would certainly get again. Best traditional deli food we've had in Boston. Would visit again. Would recommend read more

Ok this was an overdue sandwich that was extremely good!! The owner was very charismatic and made sure i understood the menu. The pastrami had excellent taste and came with a free pickle. I got coleslaw to add to the sandwich which made for a great flavor. The bread was super fresh but i would definitely get it toasted next time because it was soft. Hes trying to maintain a great product at a fair price to cash is king, no cards accepted. My mom who makes her own liverwurst and can be very picky, said it was excellent. Made fresh daily!
