The staff at the Madewell Fourth Street store are just wonderful! Always friendly, always helpful, service is perfect. If they don't have what you are looking for in stock, they will order it asap. The managers, especially Hannah, are particularly great. Great management sets the tone! The value is excellent. They always price match and help with whatever you need. Madewell has been a staple in my wardrobe for 10+ years and this has been one of my go to locations. Since becoming a wheelchair user, my experiences have changed- unfortunately the layout of the shop wasn't super accessible. I wasn't able to reach/look at many of the items in the sales section and most of the pathways didn't meet ADA guidelines, as I either couldn't fit down the aisle or would get stuck between a wall and the display. I was hoping to work with an employee to find an outfit that would be gender affirming (I'm nonbinary) and wheelchair friendly, but there were only two folks working, and the associate that was most welcoming to me was stuck at the register. I wanted the transport tote so bad, but it seems to always be out of stock online I wish I had it personalized but oh well. Crazy story. So was shopping and lost my purse, was so frantic. I'd actually left it by a stack of jeans and forgot to pick it up when I picked up my other 2 small shopping bags, totally my fault. The 2 sales associates ( sweetest ladies ever) looked all over, luckily one of them found it, I was so relieved. I got lucky because the store had very few customers on a Thursday evening or else who knows if she'd have found it. I was so thankful, gave her a big hug. The store could be empty and literally nobody acknowledges you. I say this because every time I come to this location it's like your business isn't welcomed or something? This time at least TWO sales associates looked me right in my eyes and then acted like they didn't see me. They really have some false sense of entitlement and it's super odd to me. It doesn't hurt to say "Hi" or "Can I help you with anything?" to somebody who's a paying customer- takes no more than 5 seconds. I've worked in retail so I don't see an excuse especially when they were literally doing nothing... I decided to buy online and just walk out after being invisible for the rest of the time. It's small, guys. Don't expect a ton of inventory, and chances are that they'll be out of something you like. Every time I've come in, which may be close to 6, they've been out of stock of pretty much 90% of their shoes. I tend to always come in to look at shoes and it's real sad.. The sale section is minuscule to almost nil. However, they set up is fine and they do have a ton of flattering jeans. They seem to always have a ton of staff, they just don't ask if you want help or need anything. I have no problems just asking outright for help, which I guess I actually kind of prefer. During my last visit, I was tipped off that there was a sale (an additional 40% off sale items). I was ecstatic. Tbh, not much excites me these days. Days are long and uneventful. *Welcome to COVID World* a world reminiscent of the Spanish Influenza and Great Depression eras. Working in a hospital, I see the casualties first-hand and let me tell you, it is a big reason why some, if not many, of us like to go out and yolo. The hospital is a constant reminder of our fate and that death is inevitable. This is COVID times, people are afraid to step outside their homes, afraid to come in contact with this invisible, yet omnipotent pathogen. And for good reason, it is novel and unknown. With that being said, I needed some fresh air and some form of a return to normalcy even if that meant mask on, hand sanitizer out. I walked into a familiar, yet cautious environment. I saw the mannequins thoughtfully dressed in trendy outfits (I used to work at BCBG and dressing them was probs my fav part of the job). I saw three masked women organizing racks, folding clothes, diligently working. One of them cheerfully greeted me as I entered the tiny store. To my surprise, fitting rooms were open! I had gone to Nordstrom Rack in Emeryville the day prior and fitting rooms were off-limits. That day, I was the only shopper which made my experience worthwhile. It was an unintentional, yet pleasing private shopping experience. This is what celebrities must feel like when stores shut down a whole store for them. It really did feel like the red carpet was rolled out in front of me. I got special attention and I enjoyed it. Every time I pulled clothes and laid them out across one of my arms, one of the ladies asked if I wanted it set aside in a fitting room while I continued to shop. *excellent customer service* Other than that, I had minimal contact with the Madewell ladies. At one point, I did ask for a smaller size of the jeans, which she was able to find me + I ended up purchasing. During the fitting, I was sure to keep my mask on. Maybe I was in a good mood that day, but I really liked a lot of the clothes I tried on. I came out with some pretty cute outfits. I felt pretty whimsical purchasing a long floral skirt. Although I don't recall a plexiglass shield separating me from the cashier, I would say the environment felt very safe. This was def the new normal. read more

This location of Madewell is always nicely put together with friendly customer service and creative displays. I like how this location is less busy than other Madewells I have been in and I have found some pretty incredible deals here in the sale section. I could have just been lucky on the day I happened to walk in and had nothing to do with the location but I loved getting an extra 20% off the sale section along with an extra 15% off from showing a valid school ID. Madewell has incredible jeans which feel super comfortable and hold their shape really well. I've also gotten a pink jacket there which is extremely warm and soft. With higher prices, I think quality could improve just a bit especially on jewelry. I've gotten a ring that sort of rusted and fell apart but the clothing is worth it if you can find the right sales. I'm giving five stars overall for a great location and cute clothing I'm always excited to look at. read more

This is my first bad review so bear with me. I've been in this store twice, both times no one helped me or even acknowledged me. I had to walk and wait in line at the cash register to even get help both times. The second time the lady at the front register disappeared right as it was my turn to be helped. However, as I was in the store the people working there seemed to acknowledge everyone after me both times. I have never walked out of a store feeling more invisible or in a worse mood. read more

I've been to so many Madewell stores and this is definitely the worst of all of them in terms of service. I walked in asking (VERY NICELY) if I can get the free tote bags that they give out to Madewell Muses (which is by the way you have to spend at LEAST $500/year to achieve). The girl who was helping me (she was doing the cashier work) was very rude and not helpful at all. When I asked her if I can get the bag, she was like, "oh the free tote bags? Those were gone A LONG TIME AGO" in a very condescending tone and abruptly walks away to do something else. I don't mind that they are gone, but she was rude and unhelpful. The are only 4 Madewell stores in the bay, and I had to drive out of my way to pick up this tote bag, and to get this customer service?? Definitely never going back. If you're interested in Madewell items, it's better to order online and never go to this store. read more

I love Madewell in general, but this location was pretty disappointing because there is no sale section. You typically get the best deals at Madewell sales-- sometimes sales on top of already discounted items-- but there wasn't even a space for it here. We were in the store at closing time on Saturday, April 14. My sister is in town looking for jeans so we took her here. There were 2 women working, one Asian gal, who was extremely friendly, and the other girl, who wasn't. This girl was basically useless. We asked multiple questions, obviously looking for some help and she would give short, unhelpful, answers. When we were trying to check out, she had us wait for her to do her closing procedures before helping us. I know that you're trying to go home, and maybe if she would have helped us instead of being a dick, we would have been out before the store closed. I try not to write reviews of chain stores, but the customer service I got was so exceptional that I feel like I have to. I had ordered a bunch of clothes online, and wanted to exchange a sweater for a different size. I came in, and was kindly greeted, and then we got to work on the swap...only the internet (and it seemed everywhere else was out too). I shrugged it off and we returned the sweater. Customer Service win #1. By the time I got home I had a voicemail. The person who had helped me with my return had found a similar sweater and would put it aside for me. Customer Service win #2. I came in and tried on the sweater, it was the EXACT one I wanted, but it had huge hole in the elbow. I asked if I could just buy it with a damaged discount. We were told by the manager that that could only happen if there were NO other sweaters availible. So the person helping me said she would start calling stores and would get back to me if/when she found something. I left, thinking that sounded like kind of a lot of work. Customer Service win #3. I got home and already had voicemail from a Madewell in Beverly Hills saying they had my sweater in my size and that they were going to overnight it to me for with free shipping! I love the brand and a solid majority of my wardrobe is sourced from Madewell. I was so thrilled to see a shop open on nearby Fourth Street. I received great customer service during my first visit -- but on my second visit, I had to walk out, as a curt sales associate informed me that they don't allow shoe returns without the shoe box. Seriously? I have the unworn product in my hands and the receipt, and you still won't let me return it without the non-essential box? This is not a customer friendly policy, and I will rethink my shoe purchases, moving forward. UPDATE: I have checked the Madewell Returns/Exchanges policy web page and nowhere does it state that a box is necessary for shoe return. I think we can chalk this up to poor customer service. read more

I love this store and brand! The only reason why this had one star is that this location is small and only had one line open. There were three associates working and only one person working a register when there are three. You should have used two to speed up the line because it wrapped around one of the aisles and as a shopper, I would be annoyed trying to look at clothes or items and people are in the way. I was able to find what I wanted. Upon entry, I was greeted at the door with my dad by an employee. Then afterward while we were in the store shopping no one bothered to ask if we needed help. We browsed around first then picked up a few goods that I liked. The line, as stated before was pretty long and took longer to check out than usual. However, the employee who rang people up at the register was nice and knowledgeable. I will be back if ever I am in the area, but I prefer locations that are bigger. read more

A good addition to the 4th street shops but I haven't experienced a great customer service the day I came. The shop is small, so don't expect to have a large choice but all sizes are in stock. If you're looking for a bag or shoes, their choice is more than decent. One of the customer associate was particularly unpleasant, no hello when customer were coming in, no asked for help, no happy face. The only sound I heard from her was the noise of her clogs on the floor. No smile or little chit chat while I was paying. She was so cold that I wondered myself why she was working in sales. The worst. Went in intending to buy a pair of shoes I've been eyeing for a conference. I was looking around waiting for a worker to come by. One was approaching me, and I was so ready to ask for my size. Another stopped her and whispered (not very discretely), "Don't bother; she's not going to buy anything anyway." Hey, not sure if jeans and a shirt constitutes someone who can't afford this brand right off the bat, but you should always try your best to make your customers feel welcome and encouraged to purchase your items anyway. Nice store, but this review is for Grace, who helped me pick out a bunch of jeans to try on. She was super knowledgeable about every pair, from the cut to the wash to the stretch. She made the normally aggravating process so much easier and, with her help, I found the perfect pair. Better yet, I understand their denim much better now and feel confident buying another pair or two online (where they have a larger selection). I had one of the worst customer experiences of my life at this store yesterday. The cashier (as it says on my receipt) was Gloria Katherine, who I think might even be a manager. Tall, thin, dirty blonde hair. I was exchanging for different sizes that they didn't carry in store (I love that they have larger sizes and petites now but most aren't available in store) so I was having her order it for me. She was blatantly rude to me, as if I were the biggest pain in her ass by returning/exchanging and having questions, she rolled her eyes more than once without even trying to hide it, argued with me over simple questions and refused to give me yes or no answers regarding my returns. It was a really bazar experience. She Insinuated that she'd rather me go to another store to do it becasue she didn't want to deal with me. I was seriously shocked at how she was treating me and then I remembered that this is classic fat-phobia that many people experience in stores like Madewell (being barely plus size I definitely don't experience the worst of it). I left feeling miserable and like Its not even worth it to try to shop at this store when I will be treated like such crap. I am POSITIVE that if I were a thin customer she would have treated me differently. She probably doesn't even realize that she was being fatphobic, but just sees me, places less value and feels like she doesn't need to treat me with any respect or kindness (as a human, not even a customer). I am not one of those customers that demands to be greeted or smiled at as I've been in customer service for 10 years (unfortunately) and know how life sucking it is, but this was a matter of human decency and discrimination based on me not fitting her thin, wealthy looking ideal. read more

Customer service at Madewell can be hit or miss. Often times the sales associates can have snobby attitudes but my encounters at this location have been positive. On my last visit the woman helping me called at least four other stores to help me locate a pair of earrings that I really wanted and she was pleasant and patient the entire time. When they first opened they didn't have a sale section at all, but I noticed in the last couple of months they've tucked a small one in the corner which I'm delighted about. read more
