I found myself in urgent need of leaf garlands and sticks. These items were absolutely, positively, 100% unequivocally necessary, and I needed them sooner rather than later. There is one place in SF that would probably have what I wanted, but the hours sucked and I don't live nor work anywhere near it. A little research and a couple of phone calls later I figured out Michael's would be my best bet, even if it would require a rather long transit trek. Luckily, my epic transit adventure was not in vain. Not only did I find a plethora of fake plants, but in all sorts of different colors, many of which were on sale to make room for the Xmas stuff. I also found a nice bunch of sticks and something I didn't realize I needed until I saw it, which will round everything out swimmingly. I nearly got sucked into all the interesting doodads and crafty items but I reminded myself that I was going to be schlepping all this other stuff home so I probably didn't want to buy more. I stayed out of the yarn section because I'm sure I would have bought a skein or two, even though I haven't knitted in months and am a beginner at that. I found the customer service to be okay - not great or outstanding, but not horrible either. Hey - the remodel is finished and the result is fabulous! The store is much more bright and airy than it was prior to the remodel. It's now divided into sections by craft, and is much easier to maneuver. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a crafter - but Michaels makes me want to become one! They have an incredible selection of beads, stones and the like for making your own jewelry. The prices and quality vary from el-cheapo plastic to crystals and the like. Really gorgeous stuff. I think all yarn has a purpose and sometimes it's fun to just crank out a whole bunch of scarves for no reason and no one in particular - so I'm not going to spend a fortune it. It's not my fault you hate your job, don't take it out on me! All I needed was an extra pack of tea light candles for my wedding. That was it. Candles.Three different employees asked, each directing me to separate aisles, each aisle... wrong. Never fails. Horrible customer service, can't find what I'm looking for, a full 40 minutes of cardio resulting in one glue stick, a cheap scrapbook, and an impulse buy of glow-in-the-dark play-doh I obviously did not need, terrible fluorescent lighting reminiscent of Walmart... three words: not. a. fan. After the new update this store is now easy to navigate, but lacks in the most basic supplies outside of their enormous scrapbooking section. The store is now dedicated about 50% to scrapbooking, 25% to framing artwork, and the final 25% is all they have left to devote to every other form of craft work in the world. I talked to a manager about the new store design because I was so disappointed that they had gotten rid of 95% of their embroidery/needlepoint supplies, and he told me that this is the "new direction" for the chain, and that eventually all their stores will be made over to be like this one. Summary: Do NOT get your art framed here! Service: Zero Knowledgeability: Zero If a zero star review was possible, I'd be using that. Having worked at a frame shop for over a decade, I have a better than average grip on what's required. Ever since Aaron Brothers was "absorbed" into the mothership of Michaels, there has been a dearth of employees who know anything about anything when it comes to framing, or art supplies, either, for that matter. Visit #1: I brought in a large (24x36") fine art print to be framed, planning to take advantage of their sale price on custom framing. I'm a good decision maker and know what I'm looking for when it comes to mat and frame options, so being left on my own was fine. There were 2 employees on that Sunday afternoon, one of whom was perhaps 17 and brand new, and the other, a manager, perhaps 25, who at least knew how the company worked. I made my selection of mat and frame, and newbie fumbled around trying to get measurements. The issue turned out to be that the print image itself was very slightly out of square, so the top was 1/4" wider than the bottom. This flummoxed the young person. OK, so I took over, determined how I wanted to split the difference to de-emphasize the discrepancy, and presented the final measurements. Turns out, the paper the print was on was fractionally too large for the frame inner measurements, at which point I was told "we don't cut art - company policy". Well alrighty-then. My 2 choices were; cut it there or take it home and cut it then bring it back. Let me preface my decision by saying I live in San Francisco (where there is no Michaels). Commuting to Emeryville is not convenient by a long stretch. So I said I'd cut it there. I wasn't allowed to go into the back "work room" (more on that later) to use their Roto-cutter or mat cutter. I asked for a straight edge and a mat knife, xacto, or box cutter. Newbie looked as though he'd never heard of any of those things. Finally, the manager made a management decision and found a box cutter and a plastic ruler (18"). I asked for a pencil, which at least they had to hand. For those who know art supplies and/or framing, or have a modicum of common sense, the obvious issues with a PLASTIC straightedge (ruler) and a sharp KNIFE should be evident: i.e., you're not likely to get a straight cut, particularly since you're piecing together your cuts as the ruler is way shorter than the paper dimensions. I was working on their public (customer facing) farming tables so I asked for a piece of cardboard to protect the surface from the knife. More obvious common sense that wasn't evident to the young person. I proceeded to make my cuts slowly and carefully, and eventually got it trimmed up. I paid for the framing selection I'd made, and left with an estimated completion date of Feb. 9th. At this point, I'm told they actually ship out their cutting orders to some off-site third party location to do the actual WORK. This explains a LOT. Fast forward to February 27th: I hadn't heard anything and began to wonder if I'd somehow missed the call, or blocked the number on my cell (damned robocalls are a nightmare!). I called and was told, yeah, they were running late. No kidding. So I asked if they had any idea when the piece would be completed. Answer, no. They'd call me when it was done. OK. The next day I get a message on my phone saying: the piece STILL doesn't fit in the frame. I'll have to come back and cut it again (or take it home). The earliest I could make it in was Feb. 29th, so I hauled my ass over the bridge and turned up at the framing department. More to follow when Yelp will let me! read more

I've gotten two things framed from Michael's and they have both turned out pretty well. I went in knowing exactly what I wanted and the people helping me have always been extremely friendly. I have three complaints though: 1. One of my prints has a large spec of dust under the glass and it's not a huge deal but of course I notice it all the time now. 2. I brought something in two weeks before I was going on vacation for a month and asked if it was at all possible to have it ready on the night before I left. It wasn't, but they didn't make any promises anyway so it's my fault for getting my hopes up. 3. The "50-60% off custom framing" marketing ploy is ridiculous. First, they don't even use Museum Glass and second I was quoted over $300 on an 18"x24" print with this supposed 55% off deal. There's absolutely no way it's $600-$700 without the promotion. Very dissatisfied! The only reason I'm giving them 2 Stars is they do have a large selection of products but ... 1) The checkouts are mind numbingly slow. I've been there a few times and this is the case every time. 2) The framing department is a mess. I paid for a matt that was supposed to me 3-4 days ... two weeks later they can't find my artwork, frame, and matt ... when they did find it, it looked like they had simply cut it themselves and lost the one that was farmed out to be cut. There was no bevel to the edges and there were cut marks on the corners ... I was told that that was normal! I could have cut the matt myself if that's what you get for your money. They did refund me the cost of the matt but I'll never use their framing shop again. Beware! read more

It use to be if you go into an arts and crafts store, some kind of aesthetic presentation needs to be attempted. I feel that when I go into Micheals.. there is a just and bunch of stuff for sale, and with little to no attention to the way the sort is layout. I felt that even BevMo, Petco and Costco had a better shopping presentation and experience. Inside the store, Micheals has vast rows of selection but it lacks any aspect of store layout, presentation and design. At the very same time, you get little to no attention to how might products be used. Its just shelves and shelves of what equates to organized landfill order emotionless as SKU with prices on it. I felt equally disappointed that whatever presentations were made, they were simply ugly, seemingly put together by double left foot dancers. read more

I normally enjoy coming to Michaels, but today was an exception. The two employees that I saw did not have their masks covering their mouth or nose. During the coronavirus pandemic, This is completely unacceptable for the safety of their staff as well as their customers. One of the employees was the manager on duty. I'm giving this place a 2.5. Great that this place is right next to a F bus stop for those of us who live near the UC Berkeley campus. Decent deals and availability of supplies. However, they do seem severely understaffed (I've only ever seen two cashiers working at the same time) and probably because of that they are desperate to hire anyone--definitely bumped into some employees here who give you dirty looks/attitude, or cashiers who take their sweet time to scan items at like 15 seconds per item even when there are 10+ people in line. read more

This place has gotten a LOT better since they changed their font from the one they used for Good Housekeeping in 1975 to one that looks like it could be either a lingerie shop, hair salon or maybe a candy store. Way to go, creative department. The people in there are as surly and clueless as ever but its way cleaner and more organized. Its kind of like they copied the layout of Best Buy, actually. What I don't understand is their 1500 square foot dedicated space right smack in the middle of the store to all this "scrapbooking" crap. Do people really "scrapbook"? It took me about 20 minutes to figure out just what all those little cut outs and stensils and stickers were even for. I still don't really get it, to be honest. Endless aisles of beads, paint, feathers, stickers, gems, and more..anything that the creative being inside of you wants, you can find it here! Prices are good, there's always some fun random stuff in bins on super sale, and the staff is friendly/helpful. You could spend hours in here if you had the time. There are tons of aisles that make you feel like you are in arts & crafts wonderland. The check out line could move a bit quicker but I hope that was a one time thing last time I was there... and there weren't that many people in line to begin with. I am not a cat lady. I will not be buying dolphin fixtures for the house or posters of kittens that say "Hang in There!" while decorating my beaded denim fanny pack for day trips to the city. I will, however, buy my yarn cheap so I can keep all my friends warm with wonderful homemade scarves. I will buy my frames for all the pin up girl postcards I have and maybe a tiny wooden treasure chest so I can pretend to be a pirate. Minus one star for the lack of frame SIZES. I've got two Mucha prints I'd love to hang, but at 18x24, I can't seem to find any--and forget any of those cool posters from the Fillmore we all have in our closets wondering what to do with them...they will forever be doomed to the "custom frame" world, and we all know that means custom bucks. I walk into Michaels and I'm tempted to make jewelery. Arrange flowers. Or start painting for the hell of it. I'm sure I'll only be painting empty wine bottles alone in my kitchen at night while staring at the excess candle holders I've purchased bc they're just so goddamn cute. Good sales, huge variety, spacious and well kept, but they need some more cashiers. One step and you just feel more creative! I especially love that the Emeryville Michael's has a decently large selection of items. Perhaps not as big as the Michael's back home, but not bad at all! I came here looking for some gold fabric paint for a DIY project and was immediately helped by a friendly employee. Plus points for customer service! Unfortunately, I have to subtract points for their organization of the check-out lines, though. I came in a month ago and the manager on duty was very nice and helped me special order 20 vases for centerpieces for my wedding. She assured me that the order would be set aside for me and they would call me when the order got in. A couple weeks passed and every week I called to follow up they told me the order wasn't in yet and that it would take at least 3 weeks. After calling in today, someone informed me that the order must have come in. The manager that helped me originally was on vacation and the order must have been mistakenly placed on the shelves rather than set aside. Some other person bought 30 vases yesterday and now the store is entirely out of stock. With the wedding coming up and no vases for my centerpieces one can imagine the feelings of helplessness and actually some betrayal from this Michael's. There's clearly something wrong with this process and they should be a little ashamed to be doing business this way. I would not trust anything any manager or assistant manager tells you from this store. read more

Just went into Michaels to take advantage of the 70% off sale for custom framing. Larry and the bearded manager of the Emeryville store were there to serve the Michaels' customers. The bearded manager had to go to the front of the store to ring up customers, because "some folks decided to not come into work today." Two of us framing customers arrived at the same time to get some framing. I let the other woman go first. She had a picture of the Night Sky. Larry thanked everyone for being patient. Larry helped the "night sky lady" with her order. He made a mistake and had to rewrite up the order. It took 30-mins to complete the order. In the meantime two other woman came in, one with 2-3 posters to be framed and the other for a "quick" pickup. Without asking me or the poster lady, he helped the supposed "quick" pickup lady. 10+ minutes later, there was a problem with her order. Larry called the manager for help, who was at customer check out. Larry thanked everyone for their patience. Mine was waning. Finally, I am thinking, "Yay, it is my turn." Larry seemed confused as to whose turn was next. I spoke up, "I'm next." BUT LARRY LOOKED OVER AT THE POSTER LADY, like it was her turn, and he wanted to help her. He turned to me and said, "What do you need help with?" I said, I need an estimate. He took a step towards the poster lady like he wanted to help her. But I was there FIRST. I really think my question would have taken five-minutes of his time. But clearly, he wanted to help the poster lady with 2-3 posters. I was no longer patient. I let him know, if he wanted to help her, I would leave. He didn't correct his blatant error. When it was brought to his attention, he made no effort to say sorry. The poster lady was in no hurry. I let Larry know I was disappointed he didn't want to help me. By my estimate on how long it took him to help the first woman, "the night sky" lady, I would have waited another 60-90-minutes. In the end, LARRY didn't help me. He didn't help Michaels. As I walked out, I saw the bearded manager, working on 1/24/19, heading back to the custom framing department to help the "quick pickup lady" with a refund she wanted. I told him the above. He said there was nothing he could do about it. I said, nothing? and just looked at him. Thus he made the excuse that several of their employees failed to come to work today. The bearded manager was the first person I talked to; he said Larry would help me, but now I 45-minutes into waiting for Larry's help, nada. I walked out not fuming, but more than bummed. If Larry and the bearded manager can't help me after waiting 45-minutes at Michaels, maybe YELP and FaceBook can. read more

Custom Framing: I'm so delighted with the custom framing Michael's did of an old family photograph of historical significance dating from the turn of the last century. I just hung it on the wall and it looks stunning! Michael's had a big selection of frames and mats and the staff helped me narrow down the choices. Because the photo is an heirloom, I chose the conservation Masterpiece acrylic--a little more expensive, but I can hardly tell it's there. It just so happened that I was in the store when all the pieces had arrived and the frame was being assembled. I watched from a distance through the open doorway. I had no idea how many steps it took to create the frame! I could have never done it on my own. Now, I have something precious to pass on to my grandkids. Thank you, Michael's! read more

As an artist who ran screaming from the suburbs, this place kinda gives me the willies with its massive "scrapbooking" section. But they have tons of supplies like glitter cake decor stuff, lots of nifty crafting tools etc. They get two stars for having decent crafty stuff. But they get no stars for customer service. The girl who checked me out never opened her mouth once except to snap my total at me. No "next please" ( I was standing looking at the impulse items for probably an extra minute because she didn't call me, and there was a line) no that'll be 12.93 please (just "12.93") and of course, after I said Thank you to her, she said nothing. I recently had some prints framed at Michael's when they were having a 50% off sale. When I arrived a young woman named Sarah asked if she could help me and it became my lucky day. Anyone who has difficulty matching frames and mats to their prints and paintings will appreciate finding someone like her. She was extremely personable, helpful and knowledgeable. I came in with definite ideas on what I wanted and she not only listened but took the time to offer some other ideas as well. She showed me a frame that I wouldn't have considered and it was the frame I decided to go with, the perfect compliment to my print. About a week and a half later I received a phone call from Ali, a co-worker, who does the actual framing to say my prints were ready. When I went in for "the moment of truth" I wasn't disappointed. On the contrary, I was excited to see to see my two prints looking so perfect. Ali did a wonderful job putting the mats, framing and prints together. I have been wanting to come to Michaels Arts & Crafts for the longest time. To make a long story short, I was pleased as heck to find that they had the Wilton Professional Cake Turntable, I was able to use my 40% discount coupon for that, I got that just for signing up for the weekly emails. I have since learned that they will accept their competitor's coupon's, i.e. Joann Fabrics and Crafts, that is, if they have the exact same item. (If you use the coupons, you cannot use Michaels coupons at Joann for fabric, FYI.) Some of the yelpers have commented about the competition, Joann Fabrics and Crafts, closing down the Emeryville location. . .I was told that Joann Fabrics and Crafts have relocated to El Cerrito. . .this I got from an employee who worked in the Emeryville store and now works in the El Cerrito location. Along with the professional turntable, I was rather chuffed to find that Michael's had a much larger selection of Wilton products than Joann Fabrics and Crafts. They had more decorating tools and more wedding cake toppers. I came back specifically for the decorating spatulas and the whimsical wedding cake toppers, along with another cake decorating turntable. They seem to get the latest Wilton products before Joann's does. I picked up a Wilton Decorating Nail Set which consists of a cupcake nail and three sizes of flower nails. . .Joann does not have it all as of this review. I was delighted to learn that Michaels here had a makeover. I agree, it is easy to maneuver and walk in this location. They have a major selection of scrapbooking supplies. I agree, it is enough to inspire one to seriously take up the craft. In my case, Michaels will be my first stop for that. read more

Michaels is a great place to get supplies. Also ... Michaels is a great place for bargains. They have a whole area of $1 items that can come in handy. Usually they have a 40% off one item coupon in the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle. I buy my daughter's Thomas Train items with the coupon. Ahhh ... that is much better with 40% off. I like the store in Emeryville because it is easy to get to, it is easy to park and there are not too many crowds. Now go get creative! No excuses. read more

We shouldn't expect much from a company like Michaels. Not only is it way over priced, some (not all) of the employees do not take social distancing seriously. I was at the register checking out, and one of the employees came up behind me, got right next to me, literally reached over me to grab something when he could have waited til I was done. I could have brushed it off and given him the benefit of the doubt but, the manner in which it happened was super rude and as a business, Michaels should be concerned with taking COVID precautions seriously to protect themselves as well as their customers. The cashier also gave me a bag that had 2 huge holes in the bottom that I ended up just having to throw away. The horrible customer service is one thing but, ultimately shopping at Michaels for the modern artist is a waste of money. read more

I'm like a diabetic kid w/ a sweet tooth in a candy store - ravenous to things I don't need but learn to want. To the right of the store, there is an extensive beading/jewelry making section. To the middle-right, kids crafts. More importantly is the middle and left of the store. To the left, its event central - from invitations, favors, centerpieces, baking goodies (cake/candies), etc. In the middle, is a scrapper's delight: papers, albums, storage centers, embellishments, stickers, stamping, paint pens, oh me oh me oh MY! Not to mention an aisle of BIN deals! Yeah! Now I've been to craft super stores - and by no means does this Michael's have the diversity or amount as a super store, but will it have what you need? Yes. Unless you are looking for fabrics, feathers, or specialty ribbons. If you need that, you need to go to a fabric craft store. Happy crafting, crafters! This Michael's is great! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly staff employee who was helpful when I asked her what I was looking for. That already prompted me to be a fan of this place. Furthermore, this venue looks cleaner and more organized than other Michael's I've been to. As other Yelpers mentioned, I usually don't expect help from employees in such chain stores especially "arts and crafts" ones, but this place is far different. The first and last time I'll ever call the store to check stock/inventory. I was on hold for 5 minutes. Literally 5 minutes before I threw in the towel and hung up. (I know this because I was in driving in traffic and instead of listening to the radio or streaming over blue-tooth I was painfully sitting in silence.) Tick-tock. Tick-tock... It felt like eternity. No one came back on the line to say: Hi, we're still checking/looking and appreciate your patience... NOTHING.. I was forgotten. Rrrrghh....... O.o Whenever I do make it into the store, I'm more times than not met with strange, off the beaten path employees.. I'm all about self expression and thriving on one's own unique style but honestly they're just plain weird.. Always a slow process when checking out too. They recently rearranged the interior of the store and it is now a lot more organized and easier to find things. There is also much more room in the store and it now appears more spacious. What I really noticed since earlier in the summer is that the store now has a huge scrap booking area in the middle of the store. This area has all kinds of stationary stuff for scrap bookers such as paper, cards and these types of things. I love Michael's Arts & Crafts. read more
