Now you're just taking the Michaels

Between Madonna's albums, Prince's albums, and Jacko's albums, I far and away and by a massive distance prefer Michael's. However, when it comes to arts and crafts I'm less certain. Barbi likes this arts and crafts store, and usually I would give them three because they're expensive and they're a big chain, but this specific location is usually where Barbi comes for her needs, and so I'll give them an extra star because she thinks they have decent service, and usually aren't out of the things she needs for knitting (yes there is a porn star who knits and it's my porn star, naturally, don't tell anyone I told you she knits it's not good for her image she says), and whatever else she's up to.

This side of the hanging wire pulled out the first time I tried to hang it.

I recently picked up a poster I had framed at Michael's. While the framing and matting was excellent, I was extremely annoyed to find the wire hanger was not installed sufficiently. The picture sunk and the wire popped off completely as I tried to hang it on the wall for the first time. I guess I am glad that it didn't fall off the wall and break. I was lucky I was still holding it. When I called the store, I did not get a good resolution. The best I was told was that the manager could call me back in a few weeks when he returned from vacation. I did not want to bring it back into the store and wait again for it to be fixed. I could fix it on my own but I did want them to know that someone has not been trained well and they should make sure this did not happen again. I told them I could send them pictures of the wire that disconnected but I was not willing to make another trip to the store. I paid over $150 for this job. I will think twice before frame with them again.

We dropped a 58X48 400.00 canvas print to be stretched, cross braced and install a hanger. We picked out, and paid for a heavy duty frame because of its size. They told us it could be picked up two weeks later. We were called and have the VM that ask for another week so they could have two pop people present to stretch it properly. Ok...no big deal. We picked it up today and to say Micheal's Craft department got nothing correct is an understatement....they literally got nothing right...not the heavy duty frame we bought, NO bracing, NO hanger and it was NOT stretched. Nothing correct! They had used staples and a small light frame. We asked to speak with the store manager to discuss the quality and that's when it got even worse. No we were not happy and the store manager wouldn't even look at it. He just told the girl to give us our money back. I repeatedly ask him if this was the quality and service he would be happy with. Pretty much no response. I picked it up to lay on the counter to take a closer look with my wife standing beside me and the store manager started accusing me of trying to hit him with the print??? I was like really? You were 3-4 feet away. Then he told me to get out of his store. At this point, I did ask if he was truly the store manager? Because I couldn't believe his actions. When asked for his name and store number he would only give me his first name (Brian) then he told me the "wrong" store number I later discovered. Needless to say we want be shopping at Micheal's. We got a DYI framing kit for 60.00 and we are 100% positive we can do it better at home in the garage than the largest framing company in the US. Please....review the photos below this will only validate my frustration. We had also paid 300.00 for the below framing job. We were given a full refund.

Super helpful staff assisted me and gave good crafting tips. Love their coupons. This is now my go-to craft store.

Crappy Service, Crappy Return Policy, Hobby Lobby is way better. Staff at this store sucks! Don't think I'll ever return.

I called the store last week looking for Cascade 220 and Rowan Felted Tweed DK. I was told they…read morecarried one of them and that someone could help me find a substitute for the other. I appreciated the offer because while I've learned - and am still learning - about yarn substitution, it's still one of those tasks I'd rather get expert-level help with. So yesterday I swung by in-person to ask about the yarns. I made sure to paste ALL the yarn and needle info from my knitting instructions on my phone to show whoever was going to help me. There was a class going on and only one person was available to help (although she looked busy preparing something for the class while standing at a counter). I first asked for Cascade 220. The staffer wasn't sure of that particular line, so she asked for the weight. The yarn thickness category designated by the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) was the LAST thing on my mind. I'm not a vintage-only knitter or anything, and I dare call myself a prolific maker, but I'd say only half of the patterns I've used since I started knitting in the 1990s include the CYC's yarn weight standards' symbol: an illustrated yarn skein with its CYC category number. I'm more used to seeing it on actual yarn labels, so it's not my habit to note it when looking for yarn in-person. Also, no one asked me for the CYC weight when I called last week; we were all on the same wavelength during that call. So, I told the staffer the GRAM weight of the skein, and the conversation immediately shifted. As nice as this staffer was, she walked me over to a wall of yarn, showed me the store's copy of the CYC yarn weight standards chart, and started explaining how yarn weights are determined from lace to jumbo. I didn't bother interrupting her to say anything in my defense. When she first asked me for the yarn weight, I didn't ask "do you mean the physical mass of the yarn or the yarn thickness category?" But as someone representing Nimble Fingers, neither did she. And I do understand there may have been an additional disconnect. While at the wall pointing out certain yarns, the staffer mentioned that the store's yarns are organized by CYC weight. So who knows, right? Maybe she first asked me about the yarn weight to figure out where to send me on their yarn wall while I wandered the store with a near-empty tote bag big enough to smuggle home a sheep. Anyway... At first she didn't want to look at the typed yarn info on my phone for some reason. And without my reading glasses I rarely need while out 'n' about, I fumbled a bit reading my well-organized yarn notes - with highlighted needle sizes and skein amounts - out loud, which I'm sure added to me looking like a fish out of water. The staffer pointed out some yarns that might work as substitutions, and she suggested that I take a picture of them, which I did, so I could think more about my ultimate choice. But because yarn substitution is usually more nuanced than matching a thickness category and calling it a day, I was super disappointed that I clearly wasn't talking to whoever was on the phone last week. I'd been practicing my brioche stitch on acrylic stash yarn for a few months. I was SO ready to buy the yarn for my project. So that happened. The staffer was pleasant enough throughout the interaction, and even dropped a now-fashionable "y'all" on your Cousin Kerstin. But honestly, experiences like this can hit differently for some BIPOC makers, especially newer knitters navigating crafting spaces where assumptions about knowledge and belonging can feel loaded, like when my answer to this staffer's yarn weight question was apparently the "wrong" one. I also noticed an older 2019 customer photo on this Yelp page showing a much larger yarn selection, so I'm not sure if the store layout has changed or if there are additional areas I wasn't shown, but I was only shown a single wall of yarn during my visit. Between the awkward interaction that didn't match the informed help I got over the phone, the overall limited selection, and the fact that we took the bus out there specifically looking for yarn options I can't usually find at chain craft stores, I don't see myself making the trip again.

When I arrived, I was grateful to see reserved parking spaces right in front. I was not eager to tackle Rice Village parking, so this convenience was a benefit for me. Upon walking in, I asked where I could find some potentially matching fabric and the salesgirl was so helpful! She pointed me in the right direction. Since I was looking for white fabric, she recommended I take the fabric outside in the sun to make sure it matches (can't trust white with the florescent lights!). That greatly helped, as the first fabric I thought would work ended up not matching at all once I took it in the sun. After a few tries, I found a fabric that was perfect! If in need of fabric, I definitely recommend coming to Universal Fabric Center. Lots of options to choose from and great service!

I even saw some young women doing a photoshoot inside, with permission of course. I found the perfect ribbon but realized at the register that the price was per yard not per bolt! It was totally worth it because I was satisfied with the look and quality. Yes this place is pricy, but you'll definitely find what you need here.
