It's a little out of the way, and it's a bit of a jumble. Most of these supplies look as though they sat in a warehouse for a long time. You have to be willing to look and search. I'm pretty craft-compulsive, and I bought nothing. Nothing. There were some (longtime?) customers in the store so they must know what they want. I was able to go down aisles, wander down corridors freely and no one bothered me. I suppose if I asked for help I would have gotten it. Sorry but this was not my vibe.

I have just described Desplaines Hobby Shop. What you give up with a shop like this is any discount which is the price you pay for a really good hobby shop with trains stocked in depth. What you gain is the kind of shop that you can refer friends and families to and know that they will always be treated with respect and given accurate advice and guidance on trains regardless of their level of knowledge in the hobby. I have purchased both brass and plastic from them as well as modeling supplies. Their repair service is top flight and in fact they will often tell you how you can fix your problem yourself absolutely gratis. Without a doubt this is the one and only hobby shop I patronize and would recommend it to anyone. Judging by their website, I was under the impression that they were mainly trains, but they had the paint I was looking for, so I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised to see that they carried a wide selection of of other items including plastic model kits. The staff was very courteous and helpful, especially the older gentleman who brought me a shopping basket when he saw the growing number of paint bottles I was holding. As it turned out, they were having a store wide sale which meant I was able to get what I needed for a savings on what I had expected to pay when I walked in the door. I've been going here for the past year and have mostly had good experiences. The reason for three stars is because the one time I tried to sell my old binder of Pokemon cards (which admittedly I did not know a lot about) it seemed like they tried to take advantage of the fact that I wasn't knowledgeable. I say that because they offered me $100 for the whole binder - which had a base set holo Charizard and a lot of other base set cards. I ended up selling just that Charizard for $300 on eBay, and a handful of the other ones for $40-60 as well. The $100 offer was quite insulting, and after doing more research it really felt like they were trying to take me for a ride. I know card shops have to make money but to offer $100 for the whole binder when I sold one card for triple that amount is pretty insane. When I asked the employee how he got to that value he just said "a lot of these cards aren't in good condition", and didn't really elaborate after that. Will definitely still be a customer but will most likely not try and sell anything here as that experience left a bad impression on me.

Of course the usual sports cards from baseball to football are available, but also soccer, UFC, and WNBA. You can grab pokemon, digimon, magic, yugioh, and more from the store. Plenty of loose cards and graded cards as well. This is the best option for cards locally and they have the live stream for shipped or rip and ship options making it super easy for anyone to get their hands on the cards they're chasing. Their prices are fair and reasonable compared to online and market prices, and they have many harder to find packs available. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and seem genuinely to enjoy the shop and the cards. They can definitely help you pick something out if you're unsure what you're looking for, so don't sleep on this great locally owned and run card shop!

He is by far one of the nicest shop owners I have ever met in the U.S. He really cares deeply about his customers and wants everyone to be satisfied with what they are buying. He allows you to check the models before taking them home to make sure they are not defective. Compared to eBay or other websites. I find models here to be the cheapest. A model plane will be $120 on eBay but then this place has it for like $46. Forgot to mention that the price you see is the not the price you pay. Steve takes money off and if you pay with cash and save him credit card fees, he will take a few dollars off. Would highly recommend this hobby store. I filed a claim with UPS who did an investigation but failed to retrieve my item. After also contacting Lombard Hobbies, they replaced my purchased item at no cost. Their handling of this matter is greatly appreciated and I definitely will purchase from them again based not only on their quick and fair handling of my situation, but also for their prices which are lower than some of the other online hobby stores.
