The good: shopping carts are new, employees are nice. The bad: they don't have anything in stock and half of what is in stock, is locked. Therefore, you have to find an employee to even unlock it and they watch over you while you pick out what you want to hand it over to them. WHAT A RELIEF that this is 10 minutes from my house and saves me from enduring the Woodside location (see my review for that one http://www.yelp.com/biz/michaels-redwood-city?hrid=oJI-HIj5JS1fCKxGuweAcw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)) and you'll see what I mean). I do a lot of DIY and artwork and often look for supplies, and I'd like to do this with minimal fuss and fewer trips to the same store over and over. Pros: -- cheap baskets when they're 50% off and in all sorts of sizes and colors and styles. Probably still the cheapest place I know that has baskets. -- checkout is a lot more efficient than the Woodside store, with several more registers -- fairly organized, for the most part. Easy to tell when a certain item is not in stock, instead of checking every aisle for a non-zero chance that it's located somewhere random. --unusual art supplies -- pretty well stocked -- cashiers are pretty well prepared to take coupons and issue discounts that are going on. 4 stars since the location has a really cramped lot that is shared with a few other businesses, and doesn't really support the number of people at this fairly big store. Also because the line is often monstrous and sometimes I look and end up deciding against buying due to the wait. Overall, one of the better locations. read more

This location is clean, well stocked, and more organized than Colma. It's so weird, seems like every time I'm at Michael's, the checkout line is so long and slow. Prices are high unless you've got one if their coupons. I did find some cute autumn/thanksgiving theme pom pom animal crafts for 70% off, so I happily stocked up for my nephew's preschool class. I wish I could shout from the rooftops about the amazing experience I had tonight at this store. When my eight-year-old daughter and I first arrived, she was hoping to find something that she saw at another Michael's store recently in another city. i didn't know my way around this store, so I asked the first sales person I could find. Luckily, I saw the friendly and welcoming face of sales associate Brian. I simply asked him if he knew where to find the dragons. He knew immediately what we were looking for and directed my daughter and me to the dragons right away. after my daughter and I did our shopping, we headed home. It was when I got home that I realized my phone had accidentally been left at the store. My daughter and I got back in the car and drove back to the store. Meanwhile, my husband had called the store to ask them if a phone had been found. When I entered the store, the manager, Marlena, kindly approached us and noticed we were looking around. She asked us if we were looking for a cell phone and we told her that indeed we were. both she and Brian were so kind-hearted, they did everything they could think of to help us locate the phone. they went out of their way to help locate the missing phone. Luckily, it had been picked up by a customer. We were so relieved. Marlene and Brian were just the warmest and most kind professionals I have encountered in such a very long time. They went above and beyond, even at the late hour of the night right before closing. There aren't enough good things to say about Michael's. Their selection is amazing and the quality is surprisingly and consistently top-notch considering their prices remain competitive. Their customer service is the best because their employees seem like they really love their jobs. They are conveniently located on El Camino, about a block north of Hillsdale Mall (other side of the street), very accessible and plenty of parking. They get my business, hands down. read more

I like this Michaels. This newer store is very big and they have everything -and some -that I need each visit. Love the coupons on the App!! They seem short staffed lately. Maybe it's a sign of the times, but if you need help, you have to stand in line and ask the cashier. There isn't anyone on the floor to help, that's my only complaint. I love Michaels! I can't buy craft supplies online. I like to see, feel the item, or decide what size I need by looking, or bringing other parts of the project into the store. Mario was just stepping out for lunch, but stopped to help me first. His help took 1 hour, I'm sure he was starving, but he never let on- he was helpful, gracious, and a pleasure to work with. He helped me correct a choice I made for the mat color for the piece I was picking up. He was a huge help in selecting just the perfect matting and frame for the item I was dropping off. This place is the worst. Firstly, the layout is terrible, so it takes far longer to find the things you need. Secondly, this place has terrible customer service. It is always a 10-15 wait to check out because the place is so poorly managed and there are never enough registers open. Also, the employees here are very rude. I am an enrichment teacher and I've been teaching music and art in Boston, NYC, and California for the past few years. I generally teach after school programs and summer camps. They have a teacher discount which they are very inconsistent with. Because I don't have a government badge the authenticity of my teacher job was questioned. I will now be shopping on Amazon and Office Max so that I don't that to deal with this level of incompetence. read more

Shout out to Mario who juggled managing a full store during a holiday Sunday and jumped in to help me frame my 3 items. I had an appointment but the customers in front of me had a) at least 8 -10 items to frame and b) were preparing their items for framing at the counter. Ridiculous and rude. But Mario was upbeat and helpful and did a great job recommending framing options for me. Highly recommend, just be prepared to wait if you go on the weekend. Hell is a Michaels location less than three weeks from Christmas. I hate Christmas. Despise it. I don't do gifts, I don't do decorations, I don't spend time with family, and just one trip to Michaels was a stark reminder of why Holiday Hibernation is the only method for me. As you walk in, you can't even fully enter the store because the line of women with carts and Christmas crap is so damn long. There's only 3 registers open but about 80 people in line and one employee going down the line scanning items, and giving people a card to allegedly make check out go faster. There were ZERO employees to be found anywhere else so unfortunately I couldn't snag the locked up fabric paint markers I needed. As far as the eye can see it's all red, white, and green Christmas chaos and these women who come here for the discounted decorations with their 40% off coupons are out for blood. I've been shopping at the San Mateo Michael's for years and years and what it needed was an overhaul and man did moving this location to El Camino really do the trick. The old location on Delaware was in dire need of a make over - and damn. This location is a breath of fresh air and so well-organized. It's like a whole new store...well it is a whole new store, but it is like an entirely different chain. I don't even need help finding anything anymore. More parking, that is less annoying, easier lines to navigate and a much cleaner setup. When you do need a staff member, they are friendly and helpful. The selection is better and I'm no longer lacking for my craft needs - thanks Michael's San Mateo! read more

Came to order some supplies for the office and when me and my co worker were done with our purchase, we needed a receipt to report back for our director. The sale associate's register tape ran out during our transaction and we stressed we needed a receipt and wanted a reprint cuz all the items weren't on the initial print. He told us he'd refer us to the framing manger on duty for assistance. After waiting for 10 mins in the framing section for help, she finally saw us, and said she'd try. TRY?! How many people do you need to get a reprint. After 20 mins of back and fourth, she still wasn't able to help us and told us we can come back in two days to get a reprint after our transaction was fully processed. I've never in my life been through this much hassle to get a receipt. The staff really needs some training or a better process with this. read more

I am amazed by the poor customer service from the store manager. Today at 630pm a kind sales agent understood my concern that the last calligraphy kit was an opened item, (no cover, pens were exposed) and furthermore there was some scribbling which further indicated damage on the first page of the instruction book. Sales associate summoned the store manager who said, since the item is still useable, she would not discount the item. She could have made a sale, $33 regular price, but she turned me down. I would have been happy with even just a 10% discount, but she would rather make a customer unhappy and not make a sale. Ridiculous. Sales staff needs to train the store manager!! Never have I experienced an inflexible sales manager. Poor customer service, never going back to the San Mateo store again!! read more

I never knew that Michael's had rooms which you can rent out. For our daughter's 5th birthday, my wife booked one of the private rooms and purchased craft items for her friend's to decorate as the main activity. We were even able to bring in our own food and drinks. As part of the room rental they even offered a helper. Sabrina was incredibly helpful and really knew how to manage the kids. I'm not sure if you can request who your helper is, but if you can, Sabrina is a winner. The store is big, well-stocked and clean. Highly recommend shopping here if you're looking for anything crafty. read more

I am beyond shocked with the customer service at this Michael's establishment. I understand that your store has multiple product turnovers every season but every single one of your employees should be trained and an expert in what your store carries, especially during the holiday season. First, I came here to pick up party banners and asked a clerk if they carried any. This young man said no, and when asked if they carried supplies to create my own- string, cars stock, stick-on lettering, he AGAIN turned me away saying to look elsewhere. You are a craft store and can't point me in the direction of simple supplies such as these? After 5 minutes, I found an entire wall filled with not only these supplies, but the party banners I was looking for. Are you kidding me?? Secondly, when ready to checkout, I needed to buy a giftcard along with my purchase. I could only use debit, which is fine. So when prompted to insert my card, their system said my card was an invalid type. I had used that same debit card earlier in the day. So we tried two different registers, and the system showed the same error. A line was building up, and in a frazzled reaction, the manager stated there was something wrong with my card. I left in a fury, without purchasing a thing. ...I used my debit card at a drugstore later that day and had no problems at all. Funny, huh? Maybe teach a thing or two to your employees read more

I agree with one of the review here. Nothing wrong with the stock and supply but customer service, well, let's say there isn't one. People, train your staff well. You have a special sale sign but it is out of date. I told the cashier that it is on sale for 3 for $9. She told me to get the sign to her. Wth! Should I ring up my stuff too so I can offer my hard-earn money to pay for your wage? Plus, there is a line and having me walk to the aisle to get a sign and have people wait is ridiculous. I forgot to ask did bag and she did not asked. I had no quarter to ended up carrying all my stuff. Great work,Alma! You just made your company lost a customer. Just read the entertaining review below about how put out a couple of people were about an issue with a copy of a receipt. What I didn't find in their descriptions was any mention of their repeated loud use of profanity and vulgarity. The young lady asked them to refrain from that as there were children present . They just proceeded to get worse and louder. As for any training that is needed I think those two need their boss to school them in the proper type of language that is appropriate in front of children. As big of a scene as they made their boss should call and apologize to the Michael's store manager so he can verify the truth as to what happened. If I had two employees like this I'd hope someone would let me know so I could get rid of them before my business was tainted via their conduct. As for the employees of michaels and the young lady in their framing department you handled yourself well and professionally. Great job and hope your management sees this! read more

I have nothing negative to say regarding the stock/supply of arts and crafts materials Michael's carries (they always have everything for my Pinterest projects). As Michael's offers great coupons almost every week, they should allow customers to use them all up (maybe that's the company rule but the employees don't follow it)! Today I went in and an older woman at the register would not let me use multiple coupons because there was a line. She told me to line up again, RUDELY. I said no thanks, I can come back later. I'm sorry, but when did it become a customers fault that the store is understaffed? Perhaps they need to hire cashiers that are more people friendly and actually happy to be there. Horrible over the phone service. Worst ever encountered. I called to ask if they sell helium lettering balloons. I am hosting a baby shower upcoming weekend and needed many crafts materials and decors. After finally getting a person to answer after the machine, I was immediately placed on hold. After 10mins on hold, someone picked up and asked if I had been helped. I ask if they carry helium balloons, she sound completely confused, paused for a long time, mumbled and said she will check. On hold for another 10mins, someone else pick up and ask AGAIN if I had been helped. Once again I ask if they sell helium lettering balloon. She answered with "I am just a cashier, not sure what letters we still have left, come and check yourself." Wow. The service is not only poor, employees are not knowledgeable and clearly does not care about the business. Called Diddams down the street, they picked up and answered my questions within a minute. I wasted 20 minutes on the phone with 3 of Michaels cashiers who really didn't care about anything. Because of this, I will never shop at Michael's. read more

This is only my second time here at this store, but honestly, no complaints. There is a convenient adjacent parking lot. The first time I was here was to pick up an online order. They were nice and quick, what more could one want? Today I called asking to see if they had an item in stock, and they did have it, so they put it on hold for me. The phone call involved a lot of waiting, however, and I was on the phone for half an hour. To be fair, I was told that I would need to wait for someone to go check the item for me, and was even offered a call back as an alternative to me being put on hold, but they must have been very short staffed if there was no one else available to help look for the item. When I arrived in store, I was greeted by Mario, who is the store manager. I needed help finding a particular kind of string, and Mario was so helpful to go to four different parts of the store to see if they carried what I wanted. Mario later rang up my order, and he was professional and efficient - definitely the best and most hands on Michaels store manager I've seen. The check out line here also moves way more quickly than the one closer to my house, even with the same number of cashiers. Despite the longer drive, I might just make this my regular store. read more

I remember when this location used to be a Borders (years ago)... This Micheals is easy to get to and parking is pretty big. The staff is friendly and helpful. The store is clean and I was able to find what I was looking for fairly easy. Michaels is pretty much my go to spot for anything DIY and for my sisters school projects. The 4 stars because at checkout there was only 1 person and a long line of people waiting. The other staff would just walk by and no one wanted to help the poor cashier and open up. But other than that this Michaels is bigger and cleaner than the one in Colma. read more

I really like this new Michaels! It's so well lit, and it's much more spacious than the previous location. I pretty much always found what I wanted at the old store... but here, it's just merchandised so much more nicely. Probably because they have more space, or at least SEEM to have more space. The queue to check out is improved, too... No more bunching up in the floral aisle to wait your turn... now, there's an actual space to line up! Parking's not too bad, and access isn't too terrible (though if you're heading south on El Camino, you will need to do a u-turn to get onto the northbound side of the street to enter). PRO TIP: Always check your paper or the Internet for coupons! read more
