I've been a big fan of Target for many years, but recently I've been disappointed in the direction they are taking--and especially the San Mateo location. In the grocery section, their corporate direction seems to be stocking more and more of their store brands with much less nationally branded products. For example, they have almost no Early California olives, and all Archer Farms or another of their brands. Since it's unknown who makes these products, I don't buy them. The prices are sometimes higher than the national brands. I've always purchased Viva paper towels at Target in San Mateo and now they've replaced these with their own brand of a poor-quality product. (note that other locations still carry Viva, just not San Mateo). I know they make better margins on their own brands, but customers do have brand loyalty on some products. I find myself making the drive to Walmart more frequently--much better selection and much lower prices. Target once was known for fun, good-quality seasonal items. I have many that are now part of our family collection of decorations. Now they have a smaller selection at cheap Dollar Store quality. I guess they don't want it to last multiple seasons! They have also locked up many items at this store. I understand theft and their need to do this, but I've pressed the buzzer and waited 10+ minutes, and no one ever comes. This has happened on dozens of visits. Many times, while I'm waiting, I use the store Wi-Fi to order the item from Amazon. Not only am I frustrated, but it also takes away from the time I had planned to spend in the store--so I buy less. I recently placed a pickup order at this Target location and noticed a $2.50 "Regional Fee" added at checkout. It turns out this charge is for reusable bags--even if you don't request any. Fortunately, I caught it and told the staff I didn't need a bag, and they were able to remove the fee. But I can see how most people would simply accept it without realizing they're being charged. It wasn't a reusable tote or eco-friendly bag--just a basic plastic bag. While Target's help page may mention this policy, it's not clearly explained during checkout, and $2.50 is significantly higher than the usual $0.10-$0.25 bag fees we're used to in California. I personally avoided the charge, but others may not be so lucky. I'm sharing this so shoppers are aware and can decline the bag if they don't want to pay for it. read more

Once in a while, I find myself at this Target location, and I am consistently impressed by the shopping experience it offers. Even though this store had reformatted from a 'Target Greatland' store to a regular yet massive 'regular Target', it has become one of my favorites for several reasons. It always seems to have exactly what I'm looking for, and more often than not, I discover items I didn't even know I needed - often at the nooks & crannies of 'clearance items' that's well placed around the entire store! - a quintessential Target experience by chance, in my honest opinion. The store maintains a high standard of cleanliness, with products neatly organized, contributing to a visually pleasing environment. Definitely a welcome sight, and this location could teach their neighboring locations a lesson or two! In terms of pricing, I find the majority of items to be reasonably priced, and I must mention that the cheese pizzas offered here are as good as the Starbucks drinks within the store. Furthermore, the food section is impressively stocked with a variety of options ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to essential pantry staples like bread and ice cream. The availability of such a comprehensive selection makes it convenient to pick up a few food items while shopping for other necessities. While the layout of the store is generally easy to navigate, finding assistance from staff members can sometimes be a bit challenging. However, I have found that when approached, the employees are consistently friendly and helpful. Despite the occasional difficulty in locating them, their assistance is invaluable when needed. Overall, this Target location in San Mateo exceeds my expectations and stands out as a top destination for my shopping needs. Its diverse inventory, cleanliness, friendly staff, and convenient food selection make it a preferred choice for me. This update is for Target's Shipt'd delivery service. A great convenience at times, particularly when sick. The after order process is a PITA! You CANNOT get back into Target's website until you fill out the pop up to rate the Shipt shopper and with that process you must leave a tip. So although it states upon ordering one can tip at the door, on top of the $10 "Ship'd" fee and $5 "Service" fee, a tip of 20% is requested. The money grab is aggressive and where is goes isn't explained. Once you click a box for a tip and hit SUBMIT, the money is gone. read more

They had a lot of self check out opened but only two regular check out line with workers who were working very slow. There was a long line for these two because of the "10 items or less" policy this worker was enforcing. This worker asked me to move to a regular line because I had more than "10" items. I only had 12 and could have just tossed 2 items away to spite her but chose not to. Stood in one line for 15 mins and I was the second one in line. The other line had the same person still checking out too. Saw other people were getting frustrated as well. Eventually the other self check out area was opened. I was able to go to the other self check out area without that worker policing there. Got my stuff over with faster than their two workers checking people out. Gosh, they had to open 2 more lines after I was done to handle the amount of people waiting in line. Mind you, there was plenty of the self check out that was opened :) read more

I'm going to be short on this review because we spend a ton of money at your STORES and each and every time or location the bathrooms are so disgusting they are unusable. Without going into detail the worst one can imagine is at the San Mateo store. You can well afford a hourly janitorial check for how much profit you make on toilet paper alone. When reporting to staff we got "I don't use the bathroom so I don't know" or the janitor does it. In the last four years I've never seen a cleaning cart in front of the restrooms. read more

If the planet were made up of the entire Marvel super-multiverse and everything were this Target, they'd send Ultron, cross over Transformers G1 Unicorn, fly every X-Wing at it, then convert the Death Star and rename this place Alderaan. This Target is also probably the reason Oracle moved its headquarters. You might also be able to blame this Target for California's "roughly $47 billion General Fund shortfall". Don't forget: this Target is also on the way to and from the Foster City Bridge to the East Bay. Self-important is one thing. Target attitude is another. I came back to this branch for the first time in two years wondering if anything had improved and to support brick and mortar stores instead of buying everything online. They STILL have barriers up blocking many of the items in the store. I spent an additional 30 minutes that I could have spent doing something useful waiting for some clearly annoyed employee who doesn't want to be there to slowly come over unlock items in different parts of the store. Absolutely ridiculous that these people continue to subject us to this nonsense. Why they continue to force their paying customers to endure ridiculous protocols and expect us to want to continue to visit their store when I can get the same stuff for cheaper online and not deal with their bs. It's easy to find what you need, and they have several self-checkout kiosks, which makes it efficient for you to check yourself out, although the normal cash registers are pretty expeditious as well. read more

I've been calling this location "my" target for 12 years but every experience sucks now. So many items being locked. Press the button. Takes forever (15+ mins) for an employee to unlock..assuming they're understaffed :/ so I decided to do drive-up. There's an option to set on pickup, on where to place your items (trunk, passenger door, etc). It's never followed. Every time I have to get out of my car and ask them to not place in the trunk, but the passenger seat instead. And today the young man was so short with us my 7yo niece asked me if he's having a bad day? Terrible. The employee working self checkout is always kind and helpful. I don't recall his name but he's the only good impression I have of this location. Do better, Target. read more

I wait outside for an hour before opening because they told me the product I was looking for would be back in stock this morning, they opened the doors and I headed straight to where they keep them, nothing, I ask a staff member, he brushes me off acting like he doesn't know anything, I wait 10 minutes in the electronics section for someone who DOES know something, eventually someone comes, I tell them what I'm looking for, they say "no problem" and call a guy right in front of me to go look for it, I then wait over an hour for anyone to come and talk to me, meanwhile the original staff member who brushed me off continues working around me, eventually I just talk to the staff member who "doesn't know anything" and he mentions that he runs the entire electronics section and he knows for a fact that they are all out of the product and they will not be getting it today, where's the communication? There is nothing outwardly wrong with this Target but I do question if Target as a franchise is still relevant. I make room for several stores on my monthly shopping list but this Target store never seems to make the cut. The grocery section is pretty average and I get other stuff from Amazon delivered to my door that I used to get from Target (coffee pods, toiletries, detergent, etc..). I don't know a single person who shops for their clothes here. With the Pizza Hut going out of business in Foster City, you can still get your Pizza Hut fix here which is one positive. read more

I just realized that I've been coming to this particular branch of Target for years (since it opened at Bridgepointe) and I've never left a review for it. I love Target for their well-planned, clean, and bright airy stores, but this particular store has a lot of problems. I continue to shop here because it is literally blocks away from my house, but it really needs an overhaul from the top down. Let's start from the beginning... Pulling into the parking lot, there is alot of parking, but the majority of it is either dedicated to Tesla charging stations, 15-minute pick up, or handicapped parking. These are always mostly empty, so the rest of us common shopper folk have to park at the back of the lot and walk pretty far away just to get to the store. Once you enter the store, everything is pretty organized and systematic to promote a good shopping experience. Customer service desk is right by the front door, in case you need to do a return or have any questions. The shopping cart/basket area is usually well-stocked and tidy to grab a cart/basket to begin you shopping experience... Ok, now onto the shopping experience. This store seems to have the least of any Target that I've ever been to. They seem to be out of everything from pharmacy products to household products to beauty products to even food or clothing? I don't know if this is a lower-priority or lower-volume store amongst the Target chain, but corporate definitely needs to send replenishment/merchandise along to this store. A lot of the shelves are bare, and essentials always seem to be low and/or out of stock. Also part of the shopping experience is finding help. Very few associates at this store. You literally have to walk a few laps around this huge box store to find anyone to help you. But once you do find someone, the employees always seem to be nice, polite, and helpful to their customers. The aisles are clean, the merchandise is organized and well-presented, but this store seems to lack alot of inventory, which is pretty bizarre for such a busy and popular box store. For comparison, the Redwood City and the Tanforan Targets seem to have alot more products every time that I go there, but they are both each 20-30 minutes away from my home, with nightmare parking situations, traffic, and inconvenient access, so I mainly stick to the Bridgepointe location. Ok, so you have everything in your cart and now it's onto checkout. Forget about getting out of here quickly. At any given time, even during peak shopping hours, holidays, or weekends, there are barely any open checkout lanes. I think they have 15-20 lanes in total, but usually, there are only 2-3 lanes open! Bizarre. Do they not have any cashiers on duty or is everyone on break at the same time or are they are working the floor or in the back stool room/warehouse area? I'd love to know where all the employees in this Target hide, work, or gather. I never see anyone except the cart retrieval team, the Starbucks counter baristas, and the security team! There are hardly any cashiers or associates to help the customer check out this merchandise, and for retail, this should be priority #1. It always usually takes me the length of my entire shopping experience just to find an open checkout lane and pay for my items. Such a pain in the butt to end a nice shopping experience with waiting 15-20 minutes in line staring at a bunch of closed/empty registers that could be operational to expedite the customers out of here. Keep the traffic flowing, don't contribute to backing it up! Price wise, Target has also gotten more expensive. Not as many sales as they use to have, weekly specials really aren't that special (nor desirable). Household items such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, cleaning products, and health & beauty products such as shampoo or toothpaste are actually really expensive compared to small stores just down the road such as Smart & Final, Walgreens, or even online. Speaking of online, the Target Circle App is a joke. Never works, it is never an accurate count of inventory, and the price discrepancies between online price vs in-store pricing is quite dramatically different (in-store is always marked up much higher). The only nice thing is that the associates will automatically adjust any differences between advertised price vs in-store price, but as a smart consumer, you have to be on top of everything and shop diligently & always pay attention to how much it scans for. If you don't, you will get over-charged every time for almost every thing, so shop smart! read more

I had a really uncomfortable check out experience with the cashier, female. The cashier made rude side comments. It was the second to last hour of closing, on 9/14/23 8:20p, time stamp of receipt. There were only two registers opened with long lines. I didn't purchase much ~ just a couple candles and gift bag items. I saw that the cashier mentioned to give the shopping baskets over to her. The older man ahead of me handed his over. When it was my turn, I did let her know nicely I changed my mind on a couple items. She said to hand it over to her. So I left it in the basket and handed it over to her, making it easier for her. And she said, "No, you were supposed to give me the items first. I guess some people think differently." She turned to the older man when I was right there in front of her, and she didn't take my basket. She said to put it to the side, but there was a long line behind me. Instead, I placed the basket next to the items I was purchasing. Then she said with a snobby tone, "Okay, just do whatever you want." She was so RUDE!! read more

This Target store provides a substandard experience, not just in comparison to other stores, but to other branches of Target. While the merchandising and the rest of the shopping experience is fine, the checkout experience is poor. Cash customers are treated as second-class customers, as the self-checkout machines have been changed to accept only credit/debit. As a result, those who wish to pay with cash have to wait in line for the staffed checkout lines, of which only two or three may be open at any time, resulting in queues two to four customers deep, even during off peak times. Additionally, any number of the self-checkout machines may be broken and out of service, particularly in the smaller pen on the west side of the store. In person queries to store management result in a mild acknowledgement of the absurdity of the situation, but no desire or commitment to take any action to address the deficiencies. What makes it more galling is that such an experience is not found at other Target stores on the Peninsula, just the San Mateo store in particular. Do yourself a favor, if you still want to shop at Target, and patronize the Redwood City, Colma, or Serramonte stores instead. They have adequately staffed checkout lines, and functional machines that accept cash or credit. Or, take your business elsewhere entirely. read more

I always shop here because this is my local target, and EVERYTIME I shop here the bathrooms are always disgusting! Toilet paper on the floor, toilets aren't flushed, and toilet paper or toilet seat covers aren't stocked. This is a management problem! This complaint isn't in this particular store it's for their headquarters but it didn't pop up for leaving a review. I am very concerned with what I found today. I shopped and bought a number of things yesterday afternoon. On the drive home I got to a light and looked over my receipt and I'm baffled to find what I found. While it's not a huge deal to some it is to me. I purchased two tops of the same brand but in two different colors. Having purchased them before in various colors and knew each one was 8 dollars as they've always been i was confused about the two 10 dollar charges. Then I realized it was for the two tops but I distinctly recall thinking to myself as I put them in my basket that at most each one will be 8 bucks but if on sale even better. Sure enough I pull the two out from the bag and each one has the original tag showing the $8 dollar price. What's up with target overcharging customers? This was one person, how many others have been overcharged? Target, you may want to look into bringing on competent people to work your numbers. And no Walmart sits even lower in my book. Such dishonest business practices in the corporate world happening in plain sight. Such a disappointment. read more

Come here! Poor customer service, horrible demeanors with the team at this location. As someone that formerly worked target HR, I'd suggest they start giving coaching to people from each department here on customer service. You don't disregard guests or tell them to find someone to unlock it. You drop what you're doing and help them or find someone that can. Had to go to electronics and they were nice enough to help. Cashiers and electronics department are pretty nice so I'll give them an additional star. read more

Understaffed! Toiletries are locked up and requires an employee open it for you. There were 6 different parties who came and went because they gave up waiting. It took a little over 10 minutes to get someone's attention. Honestly, please don't lock your products up if there aren't staff to help access the items. The employee mentioned theft being an issue. Yeah well you guys also lost like 6 different sales by locking everything up. This one bothered me.. An elderly man was waiting at customer service for at least 15 minutes on 1/12/23. He said he needed help shopping and was hoping someone could help him shop. I made my return, finished all my shopping, and was surprised to see him still standing there with his walker, waiting. I don't know how long he waited but I felt pretty bad for him. If I wasn't in a rush to an appointment, I would have tried to stay and shop with him. read more

I generally enjoy visiting this Target location but this past Sunday I had an extremely frustrating experience while shopping. As I was in the women's clothing department, I see two very young employees, one female and one male, laughing and pointing at something. I couldn't see what they were laughing at as my shopping cart was blocking my view. After I passed them, I turned around to see that I had just stepped in a pile of dog poop. Instead of laughing and pointing at the dog poop, these employees could have warned me it was right there in my path so that I wouldn't STEP in it but clearly they aren't mature enough for that type of responsibility. They both looked at each other like neither of them wanted to take on the task of picking/cleaning it up. I then had to drive home shoeless, with a poopy shoe in my car that I now had to take the time to clean when I got home. I also overheard employees talking about how they had seen this little dog in the store and that dogs aren't allowed. So what I'm hearing is, no one wants to enforce the policy in this store even though they clearly know what it is?! read more

Target or should I say Tarjayyy is definitely one of my go-to/favorite department stores out there. I feel like as a brand they truly do care about quality items for the everyday citizen and carry line that are conscious whether it is for the environmental or culturally. I also love how it can be a one stop shop to get all of your needs and grab starbucks or pizza from the cafe on your shopping trip. The reason I am giving this location 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 stars like I would love to is because recently I did do a drive up and ordered grapes and picked them up the same day and there was mold all over the grapes and honestly I'm disappointed that this would be sold and given to someone. When especially it's so obvious there is mold. I have some other drive up orders and have gotten household items or dry items so I guess I will just stick with those type of items here. read more

If you're going to take pictures of this store while it's dirty, maybe help clean it up. This location is short staffed with one maybe two employees who can clean up as part of their duties. All the other employees aren't allowed to clean it up due to health risks. Any leaks and paper towels are a deterrent while they wait for the proper crew to fix leaks. Janitors do their best to clean up after messy nasty customers using the toilets after throwing towels everywhere. The nice employees are here to stock and help us with what we need.
