Came to this Michael's in the Union Landing Shopping Center after having just found some great Ashland Pottery that is on sale in the weekly ad at the Fremont Hub Michael's yesterday. We just had to stop on buy here to see what this store had to offer in regards to the Ashland Pottery that's on sale. The selection here wasn't as great as it was at the Fremont Hub location, however we still were able to find some at bargain prices! We proceeded to the checkout and this store had quite the line compared to the Fremont Hub location. The line was long, yet the cashier at this store did not seem to call for any backup to the front, just kept assisting customers at checkout. Although, like 7-8 minutes later, another cashier did come to the front and start checking customers out. At this store, the cashier had asked us if we needed help out because she informed us that the shopping cart could not leave the store. Although, in my opinion, I felt as the employees at the Fremont Hub location were more friendlier. Oh, and sign up to receive their coupons to use, which is an added bonus!!! I placed a large order for bunting and ribbon for the 4th of July from Michaels.com. First time I've ordered from them, but my local store didn't have these items. When I received the order, over 1/2 of it had been substituted without notification. Specifically, I ordered 5 large 3 ft x 6 ft Valley Forge Fabric bunting and instead received cheap flocked 18in x 36 inch plastic bunting by Ashland. I ordered 6 spools of 1 specific style of navy ribbon with stars and received 3 striped ribbons and 3 of a different star pattern. I also ordered some smaller Valley Forge bunting (received correctly) and some 5 inch red mesh ribbon (also received correctly) When I called customer service, they were very polite, issued a return label promptly. But when I asked about them resending the correct items, they would not do that until 3-5 days after they received the return. Too late for my party. So I returned it all. Customer Rep was fine with that and said I'd get a full refund once return was received. (Keeping my fingers crossed that that will happen). No charge for the refund. But I'm disappointed this order was so wrong. Update....Also, tried to post this review to their site. It said I had ad blocker on. Checked my settings....it said "allow"....searched my applications....no ad blocker.....no security app with ad blocker turned on. Now here's a craft store that's well stocked, organized, clean and decent customer service. But the people working the aisles are a tad I'll mannered at times. Eye contact much? Don't get me the wrong, the friendly clerks at rhe register are helpful with coupons and bagging valuables but it's the ones straightening the endless rows of beads that need attitude checks. Doesn't stop me from going back and finding more than what I need at sale prices and searching for coupons online while waiting in a short line. ;) read more

Went in this afternoon and was very impressed. I forgot my mask and was offered one in the most polite and professional way by the manager. I think the cashiers name was Maribel she was also awesome! I went to buy a frame for my picture. Got to the line was double charged. Bible It was half off and I was being charged full priced. So the employee called someone to double check the price. So the lady cameback and she said she thinks it was half off with the other frame in her hand. Honey she didn't have to bring the other frame just to confirm that it is half off. Can't you read a effin sign. Not giving people I don't what you are talking about look. Worst Michael's store around been to better ones. The store is messy, store fixtures are not full of merchandise. They haven't not even switch other departments within the store to make it look fresh, eversince the place opened. THE WORST MICHAEL'S I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO. I came to this one because the Michael's in the hub was out of the color of ribbon I needed & I called this store asking if they had it & they said yes. Literally there seemed to be one person working, and that was the cashier. No one was to be found on the floor, it was dead. I walked around for probably 15 mins to find someone. Everything was messy & not organized. In the ribbon aisle, spools on the floor, unraveled. THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE COLOR THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD. Idiots. Wasted a good hour of my life. This is by far the best Michael's in the Fremont area. It's newness hasn't worn off yet! It's big, it's organized, and they have a lot more stuff than other Michael's have. It's the creme de la creme of Michael's stores... I used to drive all the way out to Union City to buy my arts & crafts stuff, even with a Michael's at the Hub. But with the recent location change and update, the M at the H is fine with me. But this location in U.C. is the best one of all. read more

What can I say, I'm a crafter and thus huge Michaels fan! I started going to Michaels when I was about 10 years old because I liked to do artsy stuff. I can't believe how well their business is doing so many years later! Well, I can believe it actually. The reason (I believe) is they keep their prices super reasonable. Not only are their prices low on a daily basis, but they almost always have a coupon for 40% off one item, or 25% off non sale items, etc. You just have to sign on to their website and find the coupons. You can pretty much find anything you need for any art or craft project here. I sometimes just wander the aisles trying to find something that inspires me, which can make for a long visit. But if you know what you want, you can be in and out pretty quickly. The one thing that brings the place down, is I feel like I almost always have trouble finding someone to help me. I am kinda lost sometimes with all the aisles and I'm not exactly sure where to find what I'm looking for. So instead of aimlessly walking around trying to find it, I just expedite the process and ask for help. But it's difficult when everyone is usually at the front checking people out! I can understand why they do, because surprisingly they get very busy. But it still sort of brings the whole experience down especially when I'm trying to be quick! Nevertheless, I highly recommend Michaels and also you should sign up for their rewards program, it has its advantages (like mailed coupons and they keep a record of your purchases through the rewards account so you can return through this instead of bringing in the receipt) and virtually no disadvantages! Michaels is like going to Ross or TJ Maxx....you best to look to find the best deals, and it all varies store to store. I'm making my own "passport" wedding invites, and while browsing for some embossing items, I was able to score 18 sheets of textured cardstock paper, very similar in navy blue to the US passports, each sheet only 39 cents. One sheet will be two "passport" covers, perfect as this will be a wedding destination (Hawaii!!!) I'll agree, for some reason, with 8 people in line, there's only one single soul checking everyone out. And everytime I roll in here, I always notice that someone's saying that they are on break...sheesh. Anyhoo, come here, go really SLOW paced, and don't expect to get in and out w/ quickness. I bet if you knitted something while in line, you'll be on project #3 before you even get to head of the line!!! read more

I like this Michael's, I mean what's not there to like. This is my first 2 star post and I am not a complainer. I went in to find a ribbon and some food coloring that was out of stock. I had asked the cashier if she could help me, she said she would call someone in. I hear "Erica customer service please, Erica" over the intercom. I waited and waited and I could see a worker hanging around with a guy and a girl, they looked like customers but she was taking her time talking and joking around with them. They went up to the front to buy their items and the worker was still talking to them after they finished their transaction. This is when I knew they were her friends. Now, I have no problem with a worker talking to their friends on the job, but here is the real reason why I would never go back. After waiting for a whole 15 minutes (god's honest truth it was that long), I went back to the cashier to ask if she she could call for help again, she turns and says "Erica, this customer needs help" I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE SO ANNOYED IN MY LIFE. She did the whole rolling her eyes and sighing look and it didn't end there, while she was TRYING NOT TO HELP ME she kept going on with the whole look. She wouldn't even look at me when I asked her questions, did I have something on my face?? When I went to finish my purchase she turned to my fiance to give him the balance when he's clearly behind me and I have my wallet out. It seriously ruined my whole day. I've been working in customer service for 6 years and she was nothing but a bad example of horrible customer service. I went home still upset and called Michael's to complain and as i stated before, I am not a complainer. When I asked for the manager guess who answered the phone. That's right. Now I just go to Joann's even though it's a little pricey, they have wonderful customer service. i give it 2 stars because there are other employees there that have helped me in the past and it's not their fault that their manager isn't very nice. read more

I went to Michael's to buy some frames. The line was horribly long, I'm sure because of the sale they were having, but a pair of employees was pre-scanning purchases while people waited, and it did speed things up a bit. I finally got to the register, paid for my purchase and then -- still at the register -- remembered I had a 25% off coupon. I asked the clerk if she would void the sale and re-ring it so I could use my coupon. She not only absolutely refused -- she told me I had to leave the store, come back and WAIT. ??? And then she said, loudly, "I can help whoever is next", effectively pushing me out the door. HOW RUDE!! Excuse me, but when a mistake is made and the opportunity to correct is has not gone by, why not fix it?? I was so angry with this that I left the store without calling the manager and making a scene. I did call the store when I got home, asked to speak with the manager, and was put on hold. Terminal hold. As in, they never picked up the phone again. I finally hung up and called them again, telling the person who answered that I had been completely ignored when I called the first time. Yes, he said, they will honor my coupon. But I am furious that to get my discount, I need to drive back there, wasting my time and gas to do it. I used to shop there a lot. Tomorrow I'm going back for the very last time, to get a discount I should have gotten at the register and to make sure the management explains to that clerk that her mistake has lost them a long-time customer. read more

The framing department just told me they would charge me $495 to put a canvas on a stretcher frame for me. The materials for this project would cost $8. It would take about 30 minutes to do. They are gouging the hell out of their customers. I am NEVER going here for any framing related needs. I went here instead: Artist and Craftsman Supply 2573 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley, CA They taught me how to stretch my own canvas by stretching the one I needed done for free. Then they charged me $11 for the materials and gave me a 10% discount for taking their workshop. They are amazing!! Go there instead. It does make me wonder how Michael's thinks they can get away with charging 45 times the cost of their materials for stretching a canvas. I guess one person out of 45 is stupid enough to go for it? That would be the only way they could make it profitable that I can think of, unless more than one person is that stupid and also wealthy, which is hard to imagine. What jerks. read more

Sometimes you want to make a giant butterfly full of glitter and jewelry. Or sometimes you want to be a beautiful butterfly! This place has everything for an artist. Sewing, drawing, ribbons, tshirts, fondue, bakery, etc. I usually come here when I want to make something creative for my girlfriend because I think that's more fun than a card or flowers. This Michael's Art and Crafts store is by far the most organized and clean location. This was my savior while I was doing some DIY projects for my wedding. They are well equipped and stocked with alot of the square vases for my centerpieces and ribbons. Sometimes service could be a little spotty especially when they're about to close or if they're short-handed. I love this store. I live in San Mateo and I would drive all the way from my home to go to the one in Union City. The Michaels' store in San Mateo?! Forget it! Call me crazy but that's how loyal I am. read more

I could spend hours and hours in this store. They have amazing flower arrangements and i've gotten two from here before. They are pricey but they are worth every penny. I bought my first arrangement while it was in season and then my second one I waited for the holiday to pass so that i can get it discounted. They usually have pretty good sales outside of the store so I look around at the stuff they have outside before going inside the store and pay full price for their stuff. Their staff is friendly and even give you alternatives to certain crafts so that you can save some cash. On once occassion I forgot to bring my 50% off coupon that was advertised in their weekly paper and the cashier was kind enough to give me one from the extra papers they keep. I just wish I had more time on my hands to do more crafts but for now have to get it already made! :) read more

TRUTH to the fact that the cashier lines always seem to go very slow. ALWAYS, now that I think about it. I mean I suppose you don't need that many lines- it's not like Safeway where everybody is buying large amounts of food...anyways. I found what I was looking for with the help of an associate who was very friendly and nice. Though my only "minus-Star" would be because it isn't the most organized place in the world. I was looking for some chalkboard markers, but I had to go through all the markers to find it (which in the end, I didn't). I blame this part on myself because I used to work at Paper-Source and everything there was always organized and neat - and FINDABLE. But this place is cheaper (50% coupon) and closer. read more

I usually have to fend for myself when I come here because most of the time there is no one on the floor to help me when I need help looking for something. I love this M's! I generally visit M's when I'm looking for something specific that I know they carry. This M's has not disappointed me yet. They generally always have exactly what I'm looking for. This M's is fairly clean on most occasions, but sometimes they begin changing their sale signs late and you could get hijacked at the register.... I went in looking for an item, saw it on the display end with a sale price. Went to the back to the restroom and had the gal at the framing area hold my item for me. When I walked back to the front with my item, an employee was changing the end cap pricing on my item. I went to the register and was told that the sign was wrong and they were changing it so I'd have to pay full price. Ugh! In the end, after this experience and finding the employees to be less than stellar in the helping department, I have to downgrade this M's to only 3 stars. read more

I went in today and had amazing workout and meal prior before entering today. I went into the store being so happy to buy some shirts for the gym. We made our way to the shirt section. First off why are the shirts $5 now instead of the $2.99. Outrageous!! Second we needed to see what size was best to cover our gains and which would fit best. But we got rudely criticized by this asian lady that was a worker and said "you aren't supposed to try the shirts on" in a very mean way. Me and my gym partner looked at each other and laughed that she didn't want us to try the shirts on. It is probably because she didn't want to fix the shirts even though that's her job, AND GETS PAID TO DO SO. Mind you we were folding the shirts as we were done trying them on. We actually only tried one shirt on and folded it right away. Store was slow so I don't know why they wouldn't want work if we didn't decide to fold the shirt. A simple "Please don't mess it up or put it back please" would have been fine. I understand it's not a clothing store, but they have clothes with sizes that we should be able to try if we are planning to buy for whatever reason. read more

A recent bad experience here. I went to the store to purchase some materials and wore a pair of jeans and flannel shirt. The whole time I was shopping I was followed by several employees. I understand that asset protection is critical for companies to keep their products safe from theft. I really felt that it was unnecessary to follow me and eyeball me. Yes, I understand I'm being targeted, yet I really think anyone would feel uncomfortable about shopping anywhere with a human like shadow. I love michael's and have nothing against them.. but this is my own personal experience.. To some extent this behavior can be considered downright threatening. Next time I will simply ask very inappropriate questions to the sales clerk and so they will get my point. This experience encourages me to shop lower prices at other retailers.. even wal mart.. Why do you offer UPS access point pick up if your associates/managers don't act like they really want to help customers with this service. Yesterday I received an email stating my item was delivered with proof of delivery. When I arrived at the store I asked an associate if she can call someone to the counter for ups pickup, after waiting around 10 minutes someone finally arrived, she asked for my name and order number which I gave then she asked for my ID as well which I showed. She then left to look for my package which she was unable to find, when she came back and told me my package has not arrived yet I showed her the proof of delivery with the managers name that signed for it and she told me typically they sign for deliveries for the day without actually receiving the package. I then asked for the manager on duty whom was sitting in the office and decided to pass me off to another person who I assume was a manager who told me the same thing. They typically sign for packages once a day for the entire day whether it's one delivery or multiple deliveries so if you receive an email that your package is ready for pickup it infact isn't even at the location yet but has been signed as received. So after all this run around the so called manager said my package was no where to be found and to check back the following day which I did. When I arrived the next day I ran into the same issue after giving my name this same so called manager told me my package according to the system wasn't at the store. So I looked into the office where they keep the oversized packages and seen all this clutter and my package in plain sight.. If your associates don't want to help or put there full effort into the ups pickup program then what's the point of offering it at your stores.. read more

Why I like Michael's: THE COUPONS! Whenever I get those "40-50% off One Item" coupons, I go crazy. Sometimes when I'm browsing through the store, I see something I really like, but I hold off on it saying that I'll use my coupon on that next time. haha Those things really come in handy! I've gotten a lot of baking accessories for dirt cheap because of those coupons! I love it!! ..but don't take me as a coupon hag! I do buy stuff when I need them and Micheal's is really good when I need something for projects. They have great deals in their $1 area (i.e. ribbon, cards, stationery). I also hoard away the blank cards for holidays, birthdays, Christenings, and the like. They just come in handy! ..and for a $1 for a set of cards!? You can't beat that! HOORAY MICHEAL'S! read more

I both LOVE and HATE going in here. Love: love everything about this store. Love the selection, love the organization, love the employees. Love browsing through the aisles for days just looking at everything and coming up with ideas. I've helped with quite a few weddings, bacholerette parties, and baby showers these past 2-3 years, and this place has always been my first stop. For ideas and purchases. I don't like to come here... I always find a reason to need something that I don't which puts me in a situation. A situation that always leaves my wallet a little more empty. With that being said, this place has everything. I feel overwhelmed when I come in here not looking for anything particular because I feel I'll overlook something cool that I might want! Bah! Other than that, I've come here a many times to get some 'vase filler' which runs from stones, shells, to plain old plastic beads (which is great for makeup brush holders!). Since some things run expensive, I try not to take a trip unless I have a coupon, which you can either sign up on their mailing list for a 40% (off the highest priced item) coupon and/or you'll end up getting a nifty coupon at the end of your receipt. They often have holiday sales though, so make sure to jump on that! Recently I came here to purchase baking necessities such as icing tips and melting chocolate. This store is not the same as it was before 5 yrs ago. With its reputation, we should expect better services and better products, right? The employees are just talking on the side while the line is long in the counter with only one staff posted who makes conversation with the customer. I left the store disappointed and i don't care what positive reviews some people have on this store but that is not what i see. It is sad to see the items on the shelves spread so far apart and nothing is new since last year season since i bought those three years ago. Staff are so lazy. Make sure you always have a coupon handy when going into Michael's! I actually won't step foot into a Michael's if I don't have a coupon. Make sure to check online if you don't have a printed version, because they do accept digital copies. Craft store wise, I always pick this location in the area to visit. It has very easy parking to get in and out of, and they always have what you're looking for. If you have a return I'd recommend keeping it in your bag, going around the store and then exchanging it once. The line gets fairly long here (I've always had to stand in line, despite them having so many cash registers available, they never have enough people working them), so if I can do everything at once it makes it go that much faster. Their clearance section actually has quite a few good selections if you catch them at a good time. I'm always able to find something on "sale", although it may not be the greatest price, dig around and you'll be sure to find something! read more

One of the bigger, cleaner, and more organized locations -- yay! I LOVE Michaels. I'm like a kid in a candy shop... but then I resist temptation of spending $23948723 on full priced stuff (unless it's absolutely NECESSARY) and I hit up the $1 area. If you make crafts often, then it's good to just stick to this area and stock up on things you might need in the future. This is by far one of the best Michael's I've been to. I came here last night (8/26/11) not knowing it was their Crop night and met the Scrapbook Instructor, Annette. She was so nice and helpful. She showed me how to use eyelets even though I wasn't a part of the Crop night. Other staff members are always friendly and helpful as well. Although I do shop at both JoAnn's and Michael's, depending on what I need and if it's on sale, etc. This Michael's location is definitely better than the Bayfair location, and it's not super cramped like the Dublin location.
