Michie's Tavern was a cute place that I saw on the internet that I thought my family and I would enjoy on our trip to Washington, d.c. The place was really cute on the outside but dirty and small on the inside. It was a small buffet with little options and nothing for kids. They didn't have any straws or lids so it was very difficult for my toddler to drink. The waiters walked around but kept skipping over us. They were dressed like pilgrims and scared my kids. They nearly force you to go to the gift shop which I did not want my kids to go in because I knew they'd want to buy the whole store. Overall, my experience here at Michie's wasn't the best and my family and I will not be returning any time soon. read more

Michie tavern is a Charlottesville staple. I won't dare try to accurately capture its historical background or significance. So i'll just say its an old timey tavern with the staff dressed up per the time period (they are not in character though). There's usually a bit of a wait but in our experience the line moved quickly. Once you get inside its an incredibly homey and warm environment. The host will seat you then you can go the the kitchen to pick food from the buffet. You only get to go to the buffet once so your plate will quickly get a little cramped. The server will bring more food to you if you want though. The fried chicken is the big selling point and I did enjoy it. Truthfully, it didn't blow me away though and I thought the praise was a little overblown. The real selling point is uniqueness of the tavern and surrounding sights. Enjoy the views and scenery. If you're spending the day at Monticello, Michie Tavern is a quick nearby lunch stop. As you walk into the door, you are directed to the buffet, where you can fill your plate with fried chicken, stewed tomatoes, biscuits, green beans, black eyed peas, cole slaw, beets, BBQ pork, and baked chicken. One of the people in our party has Celiacs and the hostess was able to walk her through the food items that would be safe for her to eat. Once you have filled your plate, you can pick a table and a server will keep stopping by to refill anything you might want more of. I've always found the food here to be just fine - buffets are usually lost on me and the fried chicken is pretty good, but none of this is really my kind of food. My partner, however, LOVES the food here. This past visit, we were with four family members and everyone seemed to be happy enough. What's worth talking about, however, is the ice cream sundae with the pineapple, raisin, brown sugar, cinnamon, and clove sauce - known as a Scotch John. WOW. I figured it would either be really bad or really good (you know, the kind of thing for which there's no middle ground) and it turned out to be delicious. Well...it's strictly buffet style here, and the food was fine and ample, so decent bang for the buck. It's basically a tourist magnet (for Monticello adjacent) and set up to handle large carloads and busloads. Some of the rooms have some historic ambience, but it's mostly reproduction geared to the tourist flow. If fine dining is your heart's desire, look elsewhere. I'm a Charlottesville native who's native who's never lived anywhere else yet I've only been to Michie Tavern a few times. The first time was on a field trip in third grade that included lunch, a tour, Monticello and Ash Lawn. Like another reviewer said they're only open for mid day fare which according to the sign I drive by every day is 11:30-3:00. I brought my best friend here when he was visiting in November because he never ate here the few years him and his parents lived in Charlottesville/Virginia and we got there around noon maybe 12:30 on a Sunday and there was already a wait plus two charter buses of elementary maybe middle school age kids came but that was handled separately. It's all you can that starts out buffet style then after you sit down your server asks if you want more food then brings you more food and drinks as much as you request. The time before last I here was with my father when we made it our Thanksgiving lunch spot and I vaguely remember the service being great but the day with my best friend there was definitely room for improvement and I think we ended up with two different servers waiting on us while my drink would go empty. As another reviewer said it's $18.50 for the buffet and that DOES NOT include beverage or dessert but at least the refills are free which they should be since your cup is the size of small coffee mug. Between all of the reviews I'm sure you can figure out what's on the buffet or you can go to the Michie Tavern website. Tip for locals: check the website as I saw discounts for local residents or maybe even applied to Virginia residents. But the discount was only valid weekdays. As far as the food is concerned I thought the fried chicken was the best part of the entire meal! The mashed potatoes and biscuits tied for second. I'm apparently a picky eater because there wasn't much on the buffet that I eat but I wanted my friend to get the experience. The bbq wasn't anything spectacular. Nothing that I did eat was terrible just terribly pricey. All the employees I had any interaction with were friendly. We did not do the tour but we did look around all of the shops which had some neat and interesting items in them. Every day when I drive by I consider if I want to go back. With their prices I'll keep it to an every once in a while thing and if I truly want a buffet I'll go to Wood Grill where it might not be historic but has a lot of food I do eat. I tried it with my family (two kids, 9 and 11). I normally don't eat this kind of food but it was a once a year type of meal for us. Very southern food- fried chicken, string beans, beets, cole slaw, black eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, gazpacho and I had wonderful local wine. We sat in a room called "The Ordinary" and had our water in stainless steel type of cup. You could get as much as you wanted to eat. I think I hate you with a passion. As you may or may not be aware of, I HATE buffets. Just the idea of semi warm food warmed by chafing dish, as it lingers out in the open as various people polk and and prod through it is not something I look forward to. Michie Tavern was that and worse. I should have broke for the door the moment I was ushered into the buffet line but truthfully I was shell shocked. I literally could not process what was happening to me. The image of a 200 years old tavern elicited images of an historic watering hole where our fore fathers came to have a pint not an overpriced buffet tourist trap where your choice is chicken or chicken, at 18 dollars a person mind you. Stopped her on our way to Monticello, as I'm sure most people are. My ONLY gripe is that the buffet is certainly a bit pricey, but being that it is a tourist area it makes sense. The fried chicken is absolutely fantastic and they sell the breading as well so you can make your own chicken at home. Our waitress was extremely helpful and brought us everything pretty quickly. That being said, you get your own food but she can bring you seconds, water, dessert, amongst other items. Everyone was very nice and offered to help at every turn - the ambiance is definitely setup for the appropriate time period. Do you ever feel like you've entered a crazy time warp and traveled to a place where everyone is out of date? That's how I felt reading these Yelp reviews. I cannot fathom how you could think this buffet of cold, soggy canned vegetables can be considered "great" or "authentic Southern-style". I've had Southern comfort food, and this is not it. If you're a big fan of apocalyptic storm shelter type fare, or you're interested in boring your bowels to death, then maybe this is the place for you. Otherwise, it's a bad case of your typical overpriced tourist trap. Sure, it's in a rustic old-fashioned building, and its "servers" are in period costume - if you can call refilling your bowls from a buffet and fetching an extra tin of water "serving". If you're desperately hungry or you have a herd of historically-minded children, then maybe it's worth the trip, but really only if you're willing to spend $17.50 plus extra for dessert plus extra for drinks plus tip for each munchkin. The only reason we decided to give it a try is because we were starving and not in the mood to go in search of something better. It's a buffet lunch and not even a good one. Fantastic, quaint little Tavern that offers great food, great service, and a friendly atmosphere. There is a General Store and a Gift Shop you can enjoy; each carry a great selection of wine and unique beers, some of which are from the same time period as the Tavern. Go at 11:00am before the tour buses arrive at 11:30am. Their first tour of the Tavern begins at 11a, which allows you plenty of time to get into the buffet, which does not open until 11:15am. Tour buses usually arrive at 11:30am. Don't forget to ask for their 10% military discount for the tour. Go to their website for a $4.00 coupon for their buffet. Their food is amazing, which again, is all set in the time period of the Tavern. Dessert and coffee were excellent and very plentiful. I enjoyed the peach cobbler w/ice cream while my son enjoyed a very large root beer float. Once you're done eating, you can tour the gift shop and the general store. But there are two dishes that are head and shoulders above everything else: if you get nothing else, get the STEWED TOMATOES and of course the FRIED CHICKEN. First, the tomatoes: I've never had anything quite like them. It's kind of a mush, with chunks of tomatoes in varying degrees of intactness. The surprise is that it's sweet (but not too sweet)! Kind of a molasses/brown sugar vibe. Delicious. I went back for seconds... And thirds. And the fried chicken is the epitome of what fried chicken should be. I grew up mostly on Pioneer, Kentucky Fried, Knott's and Moffett's Chicken and by far Michie is a top contender. If you are far from home and have no way of finding a decent place to eat, this will do. The chicken is delicious. They have been cooking this recipe for over a hundred years. Mitchie Tavern wasn't crowded at all when I visited on the first day of Spring - and it actually seemed that there were more students from UVA visiting for lunch than there were tourists. I went for lunch, and what an expensive lunch it is. Before you arrive at the buffet, a sign advertises "food of yesteryear." Not so much - it is actually a southern buffet out of the '60s or '70s. This is not a bad thing. The food was good - black-eyed peas, fried and baked chicken, and the pork barbecue were my favorite. The stewed tomatoes were a new experience. We come here every year as part of an 8th grade field trip. We sit in a group area and have a buffet with all of their wonderful fare. Having been here over 6 times now, I have my first plate set- 3 wings, stewed tomatoes or mashed potatoes, and 2 biscuits. Servers come around after you are seated and bring you more of anything you'd like from the buffet. Basically, coming here, is my absolute favorite day of our trip. I think about it for weeks before we leave. Then I eat my body weights in wings, potatoes, tomatoes, and biscuits - my 3 favorite things. The chicken is fantastic! We were recommended to go to Michie Tavern by the Charlottesville Visitor Center. We were a bit underwhelmed by the overall experience. We weren't originally told that it was a buffet and we probably wouldn't have gone if we knew it was $18/person as neither my wife nor I eat a lot of food. The food, however, was pretty good (even though there are limited options). The staff was super friendly and helpful. They are very attentive to your needs at the table and offered many times to get us a second plate or drink refills. We also enjoyed the atmosphere before heading to Monticello. Michie's Tavern, for those who don't know, dates back to the late-eighteenth century. Everyone who works there dresses in period attire, and they serve a traditional southern buffet: fried chicken, shredded pork, biscuits, black-eyed peas, cornbread, etc. When you get there, you take what you want from the buffet; after that, the wait staff comes around and brings you seconds (or thirds or fourths or whatever... you won't leave hungry). The fried chicken, as others have mentioned, is the best fried chicken ever. Plump and crispy but not greasy. The sides range from so-so to good-enough, but the spiced apple cider (served hot, if that's how you want it) is a treat, as are the desserts. The staff is really friendly; their outfits are note-perfect, but they don't pretend that it's still the 1780's, which would be annoying. Sure it's pricey and touristy (and if you come in the summer, be prepared to wait on line), but this is the perfect place for lunch if you're visiting one of the many presidential homes nearby, or if you just want as much delicious fried chicken as you can eat. Also: They offer guided tours of the inn, which are chock full of interesting historical tidbits. The dining area is clean, spacious and great for large group. It is also dimly lit and tries to stay with the period atmosphere, including the wait-staff dressed in period outfits. It's a buffet and the menu is a bit limited, but if you are a carnivore and enjoy good drinks and friendly staff this is your place. Southern Fried Chicken - FANTASTIC. One of my favorite fried chicken places EVER. Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork Barbecue - Sweet, smokey and fatty. Excellent stuff. Marinated Baked Chicken - Didnt have it Homemade Mashed Potatoes and Gravy - Good stuff. As good as I've had. Black-eyed Peas - Didnt have it Stewed Tomatoes - My girlfriend loves tomatoes, and she loved it. I was indifferent Cole Slaw - pretty good. There's something about drinking out of a tin cup while eating Southern comfort food that I can really get behind. On multiple trips with my family to the DC area, we always made it a point to go a bit out of our way to Charlottesville to eat at Michie Tavern. Everything from the authentic (or what I consider to be authentic) colonial dining experience to the buffet with mouth watering option after mouth watering option makes me wish I had a Michie Tavern closer to me in Indianapolis. I've been here several times for lunch and have never left hungry. The fried chicken is delicious! And you can't go wrong with the mashed potatoes, biscuits and cole slaw. My dad is obsessed with the stewed tomatoes, but those aren't really my cup of tea. You MUST finish your meal with peach cobbler. Party in your mouth! I crave it in between visits, some of which are years apart, so you know it's good! Some might consider the servers being dressed in period clothing to be hokey or corny but I think it adds to the experience. Plan ahead, eat a light breakfast, and don't plan on a large dinner (if any)! You get in line, grab a plate, and pile on the food. After getting your drinks you get a bill to take with you to your table, where waiters will check on you to offer you second helpings of food and drinks, and a dessert. I thought for sure that I would want seconds of some of the vegetables, but my one plate was more than enough food. But we couldn't leave without some peach cobbler, so we got one with ice cream to share, which was such a big helping that we couldn't finish it together. Yes, it's a tourist trap with the staff wearing silly clothes, and you get to drink out of a tin mug, but it's totally worth it. My dad and I went here after visiting Monticello. It's definitely a local landmark--there were highway signs everywhere directing us on how to get there! When we got there, we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table for 2. I was trying to eat healthy that day, so I grabbed the baked chicken, green beans, and stewed tomatoes. Chicken and beans were good, but the stewed tomatoes were AMAZING! I asked the waitress what was in them and she said day-old biscuits and a bag of sugar--so much for eating healthy! We ate the lunch buffet here on Saturday afternoon, arriving about 1:30 p.m. There was a line and a 20 min wait... which was fairly quick, given how many people were in line. The staff outside and inside the restaurant are dressed in period garb and are quite friendly. On the day we were there, all of the staff we saw -- even the ones in the gift shop(s) -- were women. We didn't see a single male staff member out of the dozen or so employees we encountered. Kinda strange. Wasn't there an apocalyptic movie about that? Anyway... once inside, you are immediately ushered to the buffet which, as other reviewers have mentioned, is fairly basic "home cooking" fare. It all tasted pretty good, though certainly not "great" as many Yelp reviewers tend to overuse that word. I especially enjoyed the beets and corn bread (which was only slightly sweet). The mashed potatoes and cole slaw weren't bad either (light on the dressing, which is how I like it). Unlike other reviewers, I thought the fried chicken was just "okay". Not bad, but certainly not "great". In fact, I thought it to be a tad bit bland, though quite juicy. Perhaps they're using colonial recipes? I wasn't aware that the wait staff will bring you extra food once you're seated (it's "all you can eat"). Had I known that, I wouldn't have overflowed my plate coming through the buffet line. Attire is casual, and since this is a mecca for tourists, VERY casual is also acceptable. The inside of the restaurant is dark wood and not much light comes in during the day, so when you walk outside, you'll be blinded by the daylight. Also, as is the case in many authentic colonial structures, the dark wood and low ceilings can make you feel a bit claustrophobic while dining. Cost for the buffett (with drink) is $21.50 per person (does not include tip; dessert is extra). Kids are about half price. Bottom Line: When you dine at Michie (pronounced "Mickey") Tavern, you are paying for the colonial ambiance... which works out to roughly twice the price for (basic) food you could buy elsewhere (i.e., Cracker Barrel). Here's some history of this landmark tavern: "Michie Tavern is a Virginia Historic Landmark that was established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie, though in Earlysville, VA. It remained in operation, in the Michie family, until 1910, when it came to be owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1927, the Tavern was purchased by the Josephine Henderson, who had it moved seventeen miles from Earlysville to its present location, close to Monticello." read more
