My personal experiences at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheater, or Freedom Hill county park; are mostly based on local, smaller events over concerts. One in particular being the "Yoga at the Hill" event, hosted by Bodhi Seed Yoga & wellness, and the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. It's a fantastic event, I've been going for over half a decade or so, and I find the park to be well upkept for hosting. The Amphitheater and park are very easy to find, as they are located on a main road, with clear signage, and a multi-lane, turn in for drivers. The park itself is a bit on the smaller side, but still very enjoyable. My only minor complaint about the area is that with the location being directly along 16 Mile/Big Beaver road, it can be very loud some days when trying to enjoy peace and quiet. There are available restrooms, which are cleaned often, drinking fountains, multiple pavilions, stages, a playground for young children, walking paths, multiple parking lots, and bonus, it's dog friendly. You also get to enjoy the unique military decor which displays a tank, fighter jet, and helicopter. During the event we don't have a need to enter the Amphitheater area, but it is viewable, and the set up appears very friendly for concert goers to enjoy walking around while listening to music from their favorite performers. If you haven't had a chance to see this County park and event space, I highly recommend you stop by for a visit, it's worth checking out. read more

Was excited to hear of Goo Goo Dolls playing in a small venue. Never been to a show here before but it let me down a bit. Parking is parking of course with how congested and the lines. Took forever to get in and out. Inside is the same. Lines and congestion everywhere. The bathrooms were a mess. Bathrooms themselves were not the cleanest or greatest either. No one knew where the line ended and was right next to concessions, so it was very confusing. Everything (food, drink, merch) was on the outer rim while all the lines just clumped right into the middle. Everything felt on top of each other. The food was good, got a pretzel and it was tasty. The staff were friendly. Lots of good options even custard. Good drink options as well. Seats were fine and the sound of the show was good. The lines/parking and being on top of one another was awful. read more

Great medium sized venue for concerts. Have seen several concerts here and love the setup. The parking is free and plentiful. Packed concrete/gravel do not muddy when tailgating. Location is easy to find and signage is good. Reserved seats and lawn. I usually choose lawn for the lower price tag and the freedom to spread out. There are no TV monitors like other venues. Plan to not see much or bring binoculars. Standard rules on beach chair heights and purse restrictions though I'm not sure how strict they are. Bathrooms are clean and easy to find. Beverages are available both alcoholic and not. They are pricey. Like every other concert and sports venue. Note last call is 10:15pm. One star reduction is for no recycle bins anywhere. They serve drinks in cans and plastic yet there isn't anywhere for environmentally conscious people to put them. Wasteful to only have garbage cans unless they are sorting garbage which is very unlikely. read more

The Amphitheater vibe itself is not bad. If you took away the massive lines in every direction, at all times, it would be better. The one star is for the rip-off "upgraded" seating. I paid more than $300/ticket for seating that was as front and center as was available. Is your favorite band coming to town and you are prepared to splurge on tickets here for better seats? Don't. People who paid $35 to sit on the grass all the way in the back had better views than I. I have never been to this location before so I studied the seat map. I knew the pit was in front of these expensive VIP seats, but I assumed (never assume because it make an.. well, you know) the seats were elevated to have a direct view of the show. I was very wrong. My upgraded seats were... card table chairs set directly behind the pit. The pit people who paid a quarter of what I did, pretty much blocked my entire view of the show. All the less expensive seats behind us had nice cup holders and an actual view of the show. Our drinks had to be set on the dirty floor. And it was dirty. Essentially, I could have purchased pit tickets at a fraction of the cost and had the same view I had with these VIP seats. The only real different was that I had a card table chair to sit on. HUGE disappointment. HUGE thumbs down. I sent this info to 313 Presents, but they don't care. read more

Although I complain about how far this place is compared to Pine Knob or Downtown Detroit, what really bugs me about this venue is the sound equipment needs some love and replacement. At the Feist show and the sound has taken a dive. Show back on track. Spend on lotto or 12 dollar Bud Light profits upgrading this place. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this venue after experiencing it for the first time for a concert. I had never really even heard of this place but Nate and I got tickets for Jimmy Eat World & Manchester Orchestra in August 2023. We bought tickets for the lawn but we got upgraded to some seats under the pavilion as we were walking up to the entrance. I'd read that this sometimes happens for shows that aren't sold out, and I was so thrilled because since I bought the tickets, I've decided that general admission lawn seats are just not for me anymore. As others have described, this venue is like a smaller Pine Knob. The parking lot is one big gravel area, so it was a bit bumpy and there aren't obvious spots but they did have some people directing traffic. The best part is that we arrived well before the first opener and didn't have to sit in any traffic getting into the venue (unlike one of our last visits to Pine Knob, where we sat in literal stand-still traffic for over an hour trying to get into the venue!). Once inside we found our new seats and scoped out the offerings - plenty of craft beer, seltzers, and a couple of wine options. Not a ton of cocktails that I could see. They have Little Caesar's pizza slices, sub sandwiches, and other typical concert venue food choices like soft pretzels and nachos. We got a soft pretzel, slice of pizza, and a bottle of water. Prices are average, with a large canned seltzer being around $16. I saw plenty of options for food (mostly fast food/fast casual) outside of the amphitheatre if you'd rather just eat ahead of time. The lawn looked nicely manicured but it's a bit small, especially compared to Pine Knob. Ushers and security employees at this show were all helpful. I liked that there were picnic tables in the concession area that were close enough to still hear the music. Those areas all looked pretty clean, but the women's bathroom definitely could have used some attention - I saw lots of spiderwebs and one of the stalls I used had an open pipe into the floor. It seemed like there was only one entrance/exit being used to get into the main pavilion, which was okay since the show wasn't sold out, but it could get pretty congested. Getting out of the parking lot was super easy but we did leave prior to the end of the show. This venue is pretty far from where we live but I'd probably come back if there was a show I really wanted to see there. read more

Great concert venue! Staff is really nice and welcoming, the only slightly negative part is the very expensive drinks and the parking. Leaving the event people can get very frustrated as everyone is squeezing in to get ahead and start honking and yelling so definitely be aware. read more

I've been to a LOT of venues around the country and this venue is one of the better ones. Friendly staff (gate entry and in the seats), some decent food options, and good placement/orientation of the amphitheater itself to enjoy the best amount of shade. Parking is also free/included in the price of a ticket. My only complaint: not enough free water available and in order to get some ice, you have to pay full price for a beverage (at the time of my review it was $5.50). Bottles of water were insanely priced, which is really irritating, as well as a safety hazard, during the summer and it is dangerously hot. A person in the pit fainted due to dehydration! read more

Freedom Hill (what I grew up calling it) is a great little amphitheater in Sterling Heights. My parents live very close to here so to have a decent sized concert venue so close is extremely nice. They get some pretty big acts for it just being Sterling Heights! They have improved their food and drinking vending over the years and the last time I was there they had a soft serve custard truck. philly water ice, among other food drink and options. I also liked that they allowed you to bring one factory sealed water bottle into the venue due to the heat index that day/week so you weren't forced to buy a price gouged water bottle lol. I'm sure this is not always the case though so definitely check your sources for the specific event you're attending before doing so! My friends and I always try to buy pavilion seats and we recommend buying them on the left side of the venue (left side if you're staring at the stage) because the sun sets from that side so you won't have the sun in your eyes all evening. They have a decent sized hill for lawn seating too. The major con of this place is the parking. The price is included in your ticket but dang it takes FOREVER to get out of there if you are parked towards the back. If you are attending a busy show, be prepared to wait 30+ minutes to even move at all in the parking lot. read more

I want to like this venue more than I do because it is much closer to my house than Pine Knob and the smaller size is nice. However we had a negative experience because so many people were smoking both weed and cigarettes when there are no smoking signs and it was not enforced. People would smoke directly in front of security guards and police and nothing was done about it. I am allergic to smoke and have asthma and was sick halfway through the night. We did enjoy the shorter drive home and the smaller parking lot was much easier to get out of than larger venues. I also feel like the concessions are a bit more expensive than comparable venues, a beer was $15 and a small bucket of donuts was $20. read more

This is my favorite outdoor concert venue. Especially since it's close to home. It's clean and well manicured. It's also usually very organized with the parking. Lines are usually a little long getting in. The food is expensive, limited and overpriced. I recommend just eating somewhere else before you come. Stay away from this venue !!!! Attended Teddy Swims concert last night. The location and poor entry exit capabilities made this a nightmare. Traffic backed up over a mile from entrance on Metro Parkway. Took us almost one hour to go the last 1.5 mile to get in. Parking lot has NO isle markings or light poles with numbers to help you identify where you parked so finding car after event was a challenge. GETTING OUT was a nightmare. Only 1 lane road to exit parking lot until you reach about 100 years from Metro Pwky when it opens up to 2 lanes. Took OVER 2+ hours to get out and we left 1/2 way through the encore. Not well run and very frustrating. Never going back. read more

Went to see Blackberry Smoke and the Allman Betts Band. Both sounded great and played great sets. I had lawn seats but as we walked in we were informed we could sit in the pavilion. That was cool. Had no problem with parking got in easy got out easy. The parking lot is a gravel and dirt mix. The pavilion seating is nice there's leg room and people can go by without getting up. There.was plenty of alcohol choices. The food choices were fair (pizza, Mr.Pita. Hot dog and assorted baskets. I got the Mr.Pita because it was easiest thing to eat. It good for what it was. All in all a very enjoyable evening. I like this venue because it's close home and so far no problems. read more

Without question my least favorite concert venue in Metro Detroit. Parking lot is like an off road course, there is only 1 entrance and a full house will take 30-45 minutes to go through security. Very small food and beverage area but there is ample seating if you want to have a seat and relax. There are no / very limited video screens during the show so get close to the stage. But not too close because those are just folding chairs. Oh - and those $200 folding chairs aren't numbered so good luck figuring out what seat is yours. Getting out the one entrance/exit is also a massive pain. I would not ever suggest being in the 100 section because you have to cross the entire venue to get to the one egress in the entire property. This ain't DTE / Pine Knob folks. Go find a show elsewhere. Heck, anywhere is better than this. read more

Lawn seats are the best seats in the venue! Grab your blanket/lawn chair, enjoy the breeze, and stand/sit in your own space and dance the evening away. Beware: very strict purse and chair rules. Must be a certain inch or staff will measure! They do have a check-in option but honestly who wants to deal with that? Pack light and DONT even bother. The sound system can be a lil' iffy depending on the artist but it's worth it and not to mention cheaper! read more

My first time coming here was for a concert a few years ago. My first concert, and I loved it. Great sound. There was a lot of options for food and tables with the singers for signing. I came here Saturday for the 11th annual Tara's Walk, in honor of Tara Grant. It was an amazing experience. We had a whole VIP area for tables set up with information. We also had food provided for us from a Church, which we were greatful for. It was all for a great cause. The walk around felt amazing, even though I was getting tired. Perfect for exercise though. I'm CRUSHED. If you are handicapped AVOID THIS PLACE. I called the venue well ahead of time and purchased two seats in a "handicap section" since I am in a wheelchair. Every venue I've been to EVER has had handicap sections either raised on platforms, or off to the side to allow disabled individuals to view the stage. I cannot stand, so I made sure the venue knew I needed a seat where I could view the stage when others ahead of me stood up. I bought the seats that they told me would have the best visibility. Needless to say I had ZERO visibility of the stage. I couldn't even tell you what color shirts a single band member was wearing. The visibility was so bad that I couldn't even see the huge screen behind them. Had it not been for the nice family next to me that noticed I was upset, I wouldn't have seen a single thing. We were lucky in section 500 that the wheelchair section was in front of an aisle that went down. Once the family beside us squished together, I could view down the aisle. The other handicap sections do not have an aisle in front of them, and I saw other wheelchair users disappointed as well. Even worse, there are two huge observation decks with a ramp on each side that were COMPLETELY empty. The venue could've used a bit of sense and moved the wheelchair users to the observation areas. I waited the whole time for one of the DOZENS of employees constantly passing by to assist, and no one did. Which is the other thing. Someone passes right in front of you on average every four seconds or less. Making it IMPOSSIBLE to even get a single short video of the concert if you want any footage for memories. I'm heartbroken and disappointed. I won't return to this venue until they find a solution for handicapped individuals, because this is completely unacceptable. read more

Love the venue, cuz it feels like a mini Pine Knob. They are overpriced for their concessions, as is any venue that has you trapped as the only options. $10 for a 12 oz 'craft' beer. I don't consider shock top craft. I don't think most people do. The parking is atrocious though. It's a free for all in the back, no lighting, and everyone gets turned around on their way out. Concert was amazing! But parking is awful!! They have absolutely no system in order getting out and you can't find your car. There's no signs to navigate where you parked. The parking lot is also so rickety. Ruins the concert vibe afterwards. The workers were nice but gave us plenty of attitude when we asked questions about tickets. First time here tonight, for Beach Boys, and sat on lawn. Got there early, at 6:30pm, to get a lawn seat. I had never been here before and it was really nice, kind of a mini DTE. Parking was a little crazy but we left the concert early so had no problems getting out. I would love to see another concert here! Great venue for outdoor concerts in the summer! I've been to lots of shows here over the years like Third Eye Blind and Jimmy Eat World, Sublime, Young the Giant, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, and Cold War Kids. I've sat in pavilion and on lawn. The lawn is much smaller than DTE but they don't seem to oversell tickets and I've never had a problem finding a good spot on the lawn with a good view. It would be nice if they installed large monitors like they have at DTE though for better viewing. The pavilion is nice too. Ticket prices for pavilion seem to be a bit cheaper compared to DTE. Seems like every seat in pavilion, even nosebleeds are close to $100 at DTE. Whereas as Freedom Hill I've bought tickets for $35 for Young the Giant and sat pretty close and just paid $20 for a Sublime ticket in pavilion although it was kind of far back. Concessions are overpriced as they are at every venue. A can of beer or Straw-ber-rita is around $11.50, mixed cocktails are around $17. They used to only sell their frozen piña coladas and daiquiris in a large size for around $18 but this summer they offered a smaller size for $10.50 which was nice. They have some food vendors too like nachos, pretzels, PaPa Romano's pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs. They also have a merch booth and local radio station tents setup. There are some picnic tables with umbrellas setup by the concessions area. The bathrooms were pretty clean and surprisingly the lines weren't overwhelming long. Parking is always bad. Make sure to try and make some sort of visual representation for yourself or even drop a pin of where you parked because finding your car after the show can be a nightmare. The parking lot is all gravel and everything looks the same and there are no markers marking aisles in the lot like there are at DTE so it can take awhile to find your car after the show, and it usually takes a little bit getting out of the lot too. Overall I really enjoy going to shows at Freedom Hill. I may even like it better than DTE. read more

Saw Rancid and Dropkick Murphy's here. Was pleasantly surprised at the lack of lines for the bathrooms, even during intermission. Clean facilities. Yes, the concessions are horrendously overpriced but that is expected of summer concert venue. All and all, and enjoyable place to view an outdoor concert with friends. read more

Freedom Hill is where you go to see bands that are the right size to play Meadow Brook but aren't classy enough to play Meadow Brook. Pros: * They've put a decent amount of work into the place over recent years and it's not as much of a disaster as it used to be. This is the only thing saving the place even remotely and giving it that all-important second star. * Sometimes if you want to see a band play, this is the place they are playing, and like it or not you need to suck it up and deal Cons: * The parking lot is the nastiest muddiest monster truck rally-esque lot I've ever spent time in. It's like La Brea Tar Pits out there, I swear! Pretty sure this is also where Atreyu's horse, Artax, met his end. * The venue is just really ugly in general. The atmosphere and clientele tend to be on the trashier side as well. I'm far from posh but I feel disgusting and slimy just stepping into this place. * Food and drink options leave a lot to be desired. * The sound system is garbage. 70% of the venue the sound is so quiet that you can hardly hear what is going on in the music and the other 30% may be loud enough to hear but it sounds like jumbled garbage anyway. It's easily one of the worst stationary PA's in the state of Michigan, if not the entire Midwest. read more

Finally caught a show here. Janes Addiction, Living Colour and Dinosaur jr. There was a lot to like about this amphitheater. Sounds were great. Hill easy to navigate unlike DTE's too steep hill. Venue is set up nicely. Only negative was limited food, drink and beer selection. Lots of stands but mostly the same and limiting choices. Heavy police presence, but like that its mostly party friendly. Parking is smooth and free which is appreciated. Definitely a great place to catch a show. read more

The parking situation is a nightmare. We waited over an hour to even pull into the venue. Had to park way in the back. Afterward it was literally a parking lot. Meaning no one was moving. There one way in and one way out. Will never go there again. Unless you get there when the gates open it's not worth it. read more

Michigan lottery!! Where do you find your workers? On Craigslist?! The staff is a joke. Great venue, just very unprofessional workers. Walking through the security check point was like Detroit meets TSA. Uneducated people with rude attitudes. Once they checked my open wallet the gentleman gave it back to me and said I was good to walk through the security check point, it didn't go off and when I got over the lady worker said I had to go back and put my wallet in the basket and walk back through! Wth people get a real job. Next stop was to grab a beer, theres 2 of us and we both show our I.Ds to the lady and she rings up 1 beer. Umm hello there's two of us here! Her response "were you two getting a beer" ... no lady we both just showed you our I.Ds for nothing. Yes!! 2 beers!! Are these workers sleeping? Lol (11.00 each) so over priced Found some pretty good seats front row upper pavilion and I started to noticed the middle aisle lady worker was not letting ppl down the lower seats without the proper ticket. Which I get she's doing her job but seating is not really that serious lady lol it's a concert. Besides she already missed a ton of ppl who walked behind her to get down there anyways. Then there was this 300lbs man who was confused with the seating and she sent him away to sit upper pavilion. He went to a different aisle and was let through to lower and then the lady worker saw him and signaled her colleague to remove him!! She was discriminating who to let through and who not to let through, even people without tickets were allowed access. Overall the bathrooms were great, very clean. Being out doors was nice but everybody was smoking a lot of everything out there in which I was surprise there was no rules on that and the workers didn't seem to care. We left a little early (1hr) because we didn't want to experience the chaos of leaving. I probably will never choose or come to this venue again as this places is poorly ran and more than unprofessional for my standards. read more

Unfortunately staff do not look at pregnancy as a disability which makes it hard for relaxing evening if stressed. I have recently moved back to Michigan, and was thrilled to find out Freedom Hill was open again! I used to frequent the venue, and was so disappointed that it had to shut down for awhile. I am a classical musician, so I hate hearing about things like that. Anyway, I went to see Kool and the Gang with my Mom last night, 6/30. We live about ~9 miles away from the venue, and left with ample time to get settled at the concert and maybe grab a drink or two. Although we left early, it took us a solid 90 minutes to get there and park. Ridiculous! Apparently there was a carnival going on as well, which we had no idea about. The planning for this, and the parking situation was absolutely unacceptable and atrocious. But, at that point I was still optimistic. It takes awhile to get to a show sometimes, and maybe I should have known enough to research if there was or was not a carnival going on at the same time. So, after parking and losing a shoe in the mud (whatever, I'm outdoorsy, I can deal) on the way to the amphitheater, I was (and this is a bit of praise) thrilled to see the improvements that have been made since I last visited (about 8 years ago). It looked great, and the bathrooms were much improved. Concessions: Way overpriced. The venue is not of that caliber yet to justify an $8 watery beer. Also, the wait staff, though very friendly, were pretty unenthusiastic and unhelpful (I don't blame them.). This could use some revamping, in my opinion. But, it's better than it used to be. Concert: Although it started very late, I thought it was great! Sound system was dialed in, and loved the seats and show. Had a great time with my Mom (aside from the couple that was one base away from having intercourse in the row in front of us, but what are you going to do?). This section is why I'm giving this show a horrible rating: After the show it was a nightmare leaving the parking lot. Concert ended at about 10:45, we get to the car at 11:00. and there is no one moving. Lines and lines of cars, no movement or progress. So, not wanting to kill the battery, we sat in the car for over an hour. Only then was there slight progress in the line(s) of traffic, so we decided to get on board and pick a line. Mistake. Still stand-still. I've been to many many shows and events, and this is the WORST I have ever seen in terms of logistical planning for traffic, etc. Awful. We sat there in line another hour, and at this point people were leaving their vehicles to go to the bathroom in the woods. Also, people's tempers started to flair. Having lived through Hurricane Sandy, it somewhat reminded of that sort of situation. You could not get anywhere, and there was no one around to help once you got to the point of actually leaving the parking lot (which was a 2 hour process.) All in all, took us 2.5 hours to get home, and my Mom had to get up for work very early. It was a nightmare, and although the concert was fun, I will NEVER go to Freedom Hill again. Our friends, my husband and I were in two vehicles, sitting in traffic, at a standstill, with many other motorists trying to make their way. The traffic hardly moved at all. It was horribly inconsistent with what other venues do to assist their concert patrons in to see the show. Unfortunately, in despair, we had to make the decision. At 8:45 pm the concert had already started, that we could hear. What would the probability of finally getting in to see any of the show be? After discussing our options, we all agreed that it would be a further waste of our time to attempt to get it into the park. At this point, if we could make it in, and found our seats, got settled in, we would have had a very short time to watch what was left of the show we paid for. Then, we would knew we would have to relive that same uncoordinated traffic nightmare to get back out again. But, this we were prepared for, we had read those complaints. Two of the friends we brought are Sterling Heights residents......and they were as appalled as we. I doubt we will ever go to another show at Freedom Hill. That was an incredible waste of time, effort and money and I will voice that opinion on my social sites as it was such a disappointment. read more

I have been here many times for concerts and it is one of the best venues I have been to. Obviously, some bands do not fit an outdoor setting like others will and weather permitting, outdoor venues aren't that great. However, when the conditions are right, this amphitheater is great! I have seen Yanni here multiple times (most noteworthy experiences) and have had an amazing experience. The facilities are great, concessions have a great selection (Rochester Mills beers and wines), sound and visual screen qualities are great, and having a nice seating selection too is awesome. Lawn seating is preferred. The only issue is getting out of Freedom Hill I guess. The random spots you can be lined up on the gravel lot and a free for all to get out of the lot is kind of messy, but it's not that big of a deal if you're patient. read more

Freedom Hill is a great smaller more intimate venue to see a concert. Any seat inside the pavilion is fantastic, but I've never had lawn seats so I couldn't speak to the experience from back there. Concessions are overpriced, but number and quality of food choices are very good when compared to other venues I've been to. So even though you'll be paying a high price, at least you will be stuffing your face with high quality food. If you can walk, I strongly suggest parking in the neighborhood that is just west of Schoneher Rd because getting out takes forever. It's a long walk from there, about 3/4 of a mile, but it totally saves time when leaving. read more
