Great burger for the price, although it was disconcerting to find an unmelted pat of butter under my pickle. I especially liked the bun, and the chocolate shake was great. French fries are not offered, just DeeLishUs (incorrect spelling) potato chips from Waupaca, WI. Prices are kept low by unceremoniously dumping your wrapped burgers on the table without a plate or even a tray. Bathroom is tiny but clean--no room for a baby changing table. The burgers are smallish and taste okay - not sure why they put a fat chunk of butter on them though. A lady stood at her little indoor campfire grilling burgers nonstop, then quickly wrapping them in paper. My beef with these burgers is that they don't offer sides to go with them - no french fries, no oven-baked fries, no fried potatoes, no potato pancakes, no hash browns nor baked potatoes, no scalloped potatoes, and definitely no au gratin potatoes. This girl needs carbs with her burger! If you like retro diners, this tiny place is worth a visit. I was excited to show my kid an old-school jukebox, but the sound was barely audible. The bathroom was so small that I wasn't sure if I was reaching for the toilet tissue or paper towels. Lesson learned: go before you arrive. One of the worst meals I've ever had. To start, please don't assume that I am angry. I'm actually having a pretty good day, this meal just wasn't part of it. 1) The inside is tiny, and poorly planned. The initial whimsy of feeling like a giant quickly wears off when you realize you are almost touching everyone around you, and the aisles are jjjuuusssttt wide enough for one person. 2) The staff...not super friendly. They weren't disrespectful, or mean, or really anything. They don't seem overly happy to be there, they don't really talk to you. You just give your order and a little while later food shows up. 3) The food...just ugh. They basically serve ketchup on a warm kaiser role. I won't even get these "burgers" the respect of calling them "burgers" because there is so little meat on these damn things I can't even guarantee you it was cow. The pairing of the kaiser role just aides insult to injury. The last thing this ounce of (hopefully) cow meat needs is a big tough bun to cover up any hint of a flavor it may or may not have. Horrible pairing. The shake was fine...nothing special. 4) There is no credit card machine, but there is an ATM that will charge you $2.50, so..thanks for that. Then you just leave. Two other irritants about this place: 1) The name has BBQ in it, and they don't serve BBQ of any kind..so that's dumb. 2) A lot of people are calling this place "traditional". The only way this place is "traditional" is if the period they're trying to emulate is the Great Depression. Seriously, I see little town bars and restaurants on the Food Network all the time and I think "Man, that place looks excellent! They're so laid back and chill and the food is so different and special! Awesome!" This place is the opposite of that. Don't bother coming here. In the process of telling a friend about Mickey Lu's, I decided to look up my review. What in the world? I haven't written a review after all these years? I've been visiting Mickey Lu's for....forever I guess. I grew up in the UP, lived in WI for 20 years and now, having moved to TN about 7 years ago; Mickey Lu's is way up near the top of the list for places we have to visit on trips up north. Charcoal grill...burgers that aren't as big as your head perfectly grilled and served on the tastiest bun ever. With a nice little pat of butter to show they love you. The brats are awesome too. The shakes! Old fashioned wonderfulness. Delicious pie. Friendly, albeit very busy staff. This place is a treasure and if they ever change a thing it will be a pity! Mickey Lu's anecdotes: We lived near Appleton and my son turned 18. For his birthday dinner he wanted Mickey Lu's and we met the UP relatives there. We nearly filled up the place but nobody wanted to miss it! One day we arrived on "Onion Day". Our eyes were watering because they were chopping a week's worth of onions but we stuck it out. It's that good. Warning: Don't eat your burgers with the works while riding in a dark car. They are so juicy that you will look like you've been shot or suffered some kind of injury when you arrive at your destination due to the delicious grease and ketchup dripping on your shirt. I sat for a long time confused what I would pick for a star rating. The taste of the food is a five but based off of everything you read below it is a 1. I averaged it out to a 3. Food- Great tiny burgers with a nice hard roll. Glad YELP told me to get two because they are small. I like the topping ratio to patty. The shake I had was strawberry and it was thick and tasty. Five star quality Location- Okay this is where I have to be honest. We walked in and every table had garbage on it. So we were forced to sit at the counter. When I sat down I sat in front of the shake station. As my picture shows it was gross. At first I thought one of the machines was broken and maybe they were trying to clean up the spill. No. This is normal. Ice cream is spraying all over and they leave those towels there to wipe their hands off as they go. My husband saw one of the girls drop some ice cream on the floor and instead of cleaning it up she pushed it under the counter with her foot. I left concerned I was going to get food poisoning. I know this is a beloved institution but I cannot risk my health for tasty food like that. I will not be back. read more

Went through on the way up because a local shop keeper recommended it and it didn't disappoint. Got the single and frankly it wasn't enough, however on the way back through town we stopped in again and I got the double and it was just right. It was much busier the first time I went in(people behind us waiting for a spot walked out) but after less than 10 minutes we had a seat at the counter. Drinks are on the small side(4-6oz) but do the job well enough. My only complaint is when we were trying to pay on the second visit we waited 15 plus minutes for our payment to be taken. On our way home from WI Dells, we decided to stop and get something quick to eat. My husband had posted something a few days earlier about this restaurant and I told him it was really good. I had the opportunity when I was in middle school to eat here with my family. Mickey- Lu's is like stepping back in time. There is a small menu, but everything is cooked to order and is amazing (especially if you love that char-grill flavor). Our waitress explained that the burgers are pretty small, and to get a double if we were really hungry. So that is exactly what I did. I ordered the double cheeseburger with ketchup and pickles. Yum! When I stopped in with my family I sat in disgust as I watched the cook grabbing raw meat with his bare hands and toss it on the grill. Then go on to grab and prep buns and grab the spoons to put the condiments on. All without washing. I can't understand how hard it is to be sanitary when dealing with food. Wow. Before we even get the food the customer service was abysmal. We had such a great time in the UP and and everyone said we had to stop at this place on our way out. We stopped and it's very busy as anticipated. We walked up to the carryout window to order Togo. We stood there for a good 7 minutes without any acknowledgement from anyone and this place is tiny -- we weren't sure what we were supposed to do. We placed our order and the woman taking the order was rude. I asked her how the hot dogs come and she said "off the grill", a nice answer for an 8th grader, not a middle aged woman in the service industry. We went to pay at the time of our order (CREDIT CARD in hand) and the woman looked at it and said pay when you pick up. When it came time to pick up, its a cash only place. Which is fine but the woman who took our order chose not to tell us. And then they couldn't break a large bill. It's a cash place, it's packed, total baloney. They were hellbent on making us feel like outsiders. All this hoopla for what I feel like was decent food. The bun is interesting for sure, it becomes this crusty little shell that encapsulates the burger. My traveling companions really enjoyed the hot dogs and chocolate shakes. Definitely not something I'm going to make to a point to visit when I'm back with customer service like I experienced.
