Ordered a sausage omelet. What I got was essentially a folded egg on top of a cut up sausage patty. The eggs tasted like butter - not like eggs with butter in them - but actually like eating a stick of butter. The floor was so greasy I almost slipped taking the kids to the restroom. Was walking around St Paul early one Sunday morning and discovered this place. At first, I thought it would be an excellent place to eat because of the number of cars there that early but later discovered that all the police cars were there because they had just arrested someone. The food was still great and the service was acceptable and quick. The best part about this place is its character and history. This review is a bit late. I was not aware of Yelp the last time I was here. About 10 years ago. And the time before that, Yelp was not around. Let me start this review with the times I was there in the early 70's. I worked in downtown St Paul. I was a teenager then. More often than not, I would get the Sputnick burger. with fries and a coke. A double decker with with lettuce, cheese and a secret sauce. I learned later the "secret sauce" was nothing more then Thousand Island dressing. But it was good, IMO. Very good. Why would I get many times if it was not? :-) Occasionally, I would get Mulligan Stew. As I research Mulligan Stew now, I see that it is similar to what is called Booya. What ever you got, throw it in the pot. A very good bowl of meat and veggies. About 15 years ago, I was downtown with some co-workers. We decided to go here for lunch. I got my regular burger with fries and a coke. It did not seem to be as good as it was 20 some years earlier!!! It was OK, just nothing to rave about. I still liked the dining car atmosphere though. That is a classic. Ten years ago on my way home from work at 7 AM, I decided to stop in for breakfast. Got a standard breakfast of eggs over easy, sausage, toast and hash browns. The hash browns were a bit too greasy for my tastes. Maybe it is because I am getting older, but I can't handle greasy hash browns. Even at home now, I am beginning to bake potatoes, dice them up, add sauteed onions and peppers, season them and add a couple of over easy or poached eggs on top., If I have bacon or sausage, will have that to for a breakfast at home. We do not have many options in town for 24 hour dining. And for those that want breakfast, breakfast is served anytime. It is still a classic place and I might return for a burger, fries and a beverage. In all honesty, I know I can do better at home. Especially the breakfasts. read more

this is what happen to my sister and her husband this morning, it's stressfull enough that his dad may die and they have to put up with this. I will never go there again-------Got into town early so before going to see Gordons dad at the hospital we decided to go to Mickeys Diner. It's pouring rain and the doors locked so we can't get in. The workers are in there and other patrons but they still didn't open the door. This is a 24 hour restaurant. So after waiting about ten minutes they've now unlocked the door. What the heck. I'm sopping wet and crabby now. Think I'll skip this place next time. The cook seems to think it's really funny. read more

Mickeys diner is proof that you can't judge a book by its cover. Looks like a cool old school diner. Had high hopes @ really good reviews. Went in & sat down with my crew( no, really, I have a crew of linemen.) First thing I noticed was a foul odor wafting from the vent system. We moved away from them and sat at the counter where it wasn't as noticeable. Waitress hadn't come to work yet so the cook was taking & making orders. Took forever. Ordered a standard bacon & eggs bfast. Coffee wasn't too good. Asked for crispy bacon but that didn't work. All in all it wasn't very good, at least according to my stomach. I am a huge fan of the greasy spoon diner but this one was a letdown. Nothing wrong with an old building but you've got to keep after it or it ends up as Mickey's Diner. read more

The food was good, which is the only reason I'm even giving it two stars. Probably some of the worst service I've ever had, and that's saying something. The waitress was rude and condescending. Have wanted to go here for years, I think after initially seeing in the Xmas movie. Outside impression... cool nostalgia, but dilapidated. Inside impression... Maybe this place should only be open 23 hrs per day, so can clean it for 1 hr. Staff friendly and interactive; banter between waitress and cook funny. Keep eyes off the cook if u care about sanitary cooking practices. Got bfast even though it was afternoon. Kids got malts, 1 is enuff for 2. Meal not the best, but found hash browns unique with a rougher shred, some skins, and plenty of crisp. Rated a low 3, but if had to pick here or Panera tomorrow, would go here. 1 of these places is better than 50 chain places. We don't want to lose places like this!!! read more

Did I go to the same place as these other reviewers? I thought the train theme would be fun for my 3yr old, but everything was sticky or covered in grime so I didn't even want him to touch anything. Using the bathroom was bad enough for me to not come back. All of our food was Denny's-oilyor worse; my hash browns were thick shreds (for hash browns) that were almost burned on the outside and barely cooked on the inside, not to mention soaked in grease. None of the food we ordered (patty melt, cheeseburger, hash browns, fries, sodas) was even average in taste quality. I wish I could at least say the service was good but it wasn't. How has this place been open for so long? I'm hoping I was just there on a very off day... read more

If I could rate in the negatives, I would. This review is not about the quality of the food, the aesthetics of the charming boxcar or the late-night diner atmosphere-- I love a good greasy spoon after 1am just like the rest of you....In fact, I have been a frequent patron of the chain but that has come to an end after experiencing the impetus of this review. It is with terrible regret and sadness that I am posting this solely because of how some customers were treated by a member of the Mickey Diner Staff. I strongly believe in people treating others with dignity and it was such a shame to witness overt discrimination and refusal of service to a group of articulate, respectful, non disruptive people. I witnessed undeserved and unprovoked hostility, agressive questioning and antagonistic comments by one of late night food preparers. It was such a strange exchange because it seem to have come out of nowhere yet was strangely motivated by anger and hate. It later became clear that this particular staff person wanted to push out these patrons by making them feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, based on their appearance. I think we can all agree that this sort of prejudice is unethical, disgusting and cannot go unmentioned. The result? The group of 5 left the restaurant and so did my party of 3. I will no longer eat at or support Mickey's Diner because of this incident. read more

All I can think of coming up to the diner is Mighty Ducks II; and I just now realized that I'm thinking of the wrong scene when thinking of Mickey's Diner. So, let's leave it at: 1) I like Mighty Ducks II and 2) I don't like it enough to get my references right. This place is a through-and-through diner car, and I'm so happy this is my first dining car experience, given the restaurant's historical significance and its landmark status. It's also a great place to hide from the below-zero weather, because it's essentially a warm sardine box with a first come-first serve policy. The exterior is flashy and famous, and the inside is cramped, old, and evokes nostalgia -- if you were Marty McFly pretending to be Calvin Klein (damn straight I just threw in a Back to the Future reference there). There's jukeboxes in every table, squeaky stools, old-school servers, and no tips on credit card charges. The food is classic greasy spoon at really cheap prices; burgers, omelets, malts and shakes, et al. I got the vanilla shake, which magically transformed itself into a vanilla malt shake. It was still pretty delicious, even though our grumpy old man server got it wrong (I seriously love that guy). I also got a ham and cheese sandwich, and it's just basic fare with lots of butter and a slice of cheddar cheese. It's the kind of food that even a kitchen noob like me could do, but I'm totally suckered into believing that it tastes different when it's eaten at a diner like Mickey's. four stars is right on...the food is made right there in the car...I mean it's an old fashioned diner. People who say it's gross don't quite get what a diner is...its a cramped car with the waitress also making you your food on a grill 2 feet from you...the food was solid and the people friendly...prices are VERY reasonable for being downtown in a major city...perfect before any event downtown there...definitely not a formal affair. read more

I'm drafting this just after ordering my food. I'll admit, I'm reluctant about eating at a place that never closes. Even the French Quarter shuts down nightly so they can hose down the streets. (Trivia: In Rekjavik, Iceland, they use a Zamboni for this purpose.) Here, Mickey's could use a heavy-duty cleaning. There's a dinge on every surface, food remnants and napkins litter the floor, which appears to have never been scrubbed. I am well aware that other reviewers will praise this place for its charm, it being a 1930's era dining car and all. In advance of my O'Brian Special arriving (eggs over easy, wheat toast, hash browns), I expect that it will taste very good, maybe even Waffle House-good. I can't otherwise imagine why anyone would dine here. Charm will only get you just so far. But as it turns out, the food is excellent. I can highly recommend the O'Brian Special. Yum. Missy loved the eggs and bacon, and Dash wolfed down the pancakes and Vanilla shake. The service, however, sucked. Our server was just plain rude. When we asked about our order after a 30-minute wait, we were told we came at the worst time - just after a huge rush. Ours was the last order. So, to interpret, it was OUR fault. Fine, our bad, but throwing it back at us was sorta stupid. Then, she barked at someone else about "the 75 bucks left on the bread" in back when we tried to pay. Christ. So much for cash control. Sure enough, someone appeared from the back with a pile of cash, allowing us to get change. What a mess. Still, the food was great. It was not cheap, however. For two adults and a 6-year old, with tip, $40. For that price, you can get a better breakfast at the Uptown Diner, where the servers are friendly and the food rocks. Omelets cooked with nearly an entire stick of butter; mother funkin' right! Stepping into Mickey's is like walking through a time portal to the past. They do everything old school here and it's a blast just to sit back and enjoy the show. I'll probably pass on the steak next time and go back to the omelet (sorry I doubted you omelet). I've never had such a fluffy and delicious omelet in my life. Mickey's is straight vintage nirvana. Not only is the food exactly what you're thinking when the word 'diner' comes to mind, but the surroundings are so frightfully postmodern. You've got an old diner car in the middle of a modern downtown, right next to a skyscraper-type building. It's a nutty mix but Mickey's shows how what's good never gets old. I love that you can still play a tune from your booth for a quarter, the service is blunt and to the point, nothing fancy or inflated, and the people are just regular folks, very easy to get along with. Long live Mickey's! Please open one in downtown Mpls too, because your 24/7 home cooking is missed over here. read more

A local icon of a place, which is why we stopped (nod to A Prairie Home Companion..we kept an eye out for a lady in a white trench coat). its a no frills, no nonsense diner, just as you'd expect. My hubby had a huge breakfast for dinner and a milkshake...he gave everything a thumbs up. I ordered liver & onions (which I love and never make)...this was a little tough. I don't think it was baby beef liver, more like a senior citizen cow with a drinking problem liver. But the fried potatoes were awesome. we've been here now and I don't think we'd rush back...but it was fun. read more

My boyfriend and I just had one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences of our lives. We walked in and the cook just stared at us. Neither the cook or the server welcomed us. We picked a seat and the server handed us menues still without saying a word. I thanked her. She came back to ask if we were ready but only adresses me. She wouldn't even acknowledge my boyfriend. I ordered grilled cheese with fries and he ordered a burger with a fried egg. While we were waiting for the server to take our order a family of four walked in and sat down. Given the strange and unwelcoming behavior we were already feeling a little uncomfortable and we weren't sure if should stay or not. We decided to give them a chance. As we waited for our food to cook the family had ordered. We started to realize the cook was working much harder for the family making conversation with them and serving them their food before us. About halfway through making their order the cook began to make my sandwich. Once it was done he brought it over and just held it in front of my boyfriend and I. The cook almost had his body and head completely turned away from us and barely looked at us. My boyfriend took the plate and set it in front of me. We realized something was going on. After the cook completed the family's order is when he finally started on my boyfriends burger. He received his food last. His burger came with a fried egg on top. He doesn't love a lot of yolk so he usually lets me cut it out to eat it. It's kind of our thing I guess. So as we were doing that the server came over and spoke to my boyfriend for the first time since we arrived. She said, "you didn't like your yolk?" And we giggled and explained it to her. I thanked her for asking, but after that she proceeded to just stare at my boyfriend. He looked down at his food but I kept looking at her in disbelief that she was watching him like that. I said thank you again a little louder to get her attention off of him. I smiled when we made eye contact and she walked away. We tried to just finish our meals so that we could get out of there as soon as possible. We had a couple more awkward stairs through out the rest of the experience while the family of four got a joyous conversation. We finished and paid, got up to leave and didn't get so much as a thank you. We said nothing to them as we walked out the door. The major component in all of this, is that my boyfriend was the only black person or person of color in the whole establishment. I'm white. I'm furious. He's black. And he's feeling things I could never even try to imagine. All I could see was hurt and frustration in his eyes. But through out the whole ordeal we reminded each other that showing kindness and rising above and mentioning just loud enough for them to hear a couple times, were better than that. They're behavior was obvious to the both of us right off the bat. We knew why they were behaving that way towards us and treating us differently the whole time. These are not good people in my opinion. They're racism was apparent. And I hope the world knows it. They're food was subpar and lackluster. I'd rather go to CC Club, at least they treat my boyfriend and I with kindness and respect like we and anyone deserves. We will never go back to that shit hole. It was dirty. It was terrible.
