You know, for years I have shopped at Microcenter. I don't do so often, but when I do, I am never disappointed. Not to mention, I always get more than what I came for. I had to come in on 7/10/18 because I accidentally broke my laptop, so I was in the market for a new one. What drew me to them was that they had a refurbished HP laptop, 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, for $299.99. Almost the same model that I already had. So, I bought it, got it home, and everything is working beautifully! Some people do not want refurbished, but hey...long as it works well, has certain specs, and can accommodate all my files, I'm good! This Microcenter location seems to be hit or miss for a lot of people, but I can say over the years, I've had good experiences and good products. I even had my good friend purchase computer parts from here individually a while back to build my wife a gaming computer, and that computer STILL works. Overall, when you walk in, the store is brightly lit, and someone is always around to help you. Product display is pretty good...though from time to time the shelves can be a bit dusty. Anyhow, if you need anything computer-related, give Microcenter a try. I haven't been disappointed yet. I brought in my computer to be serviced Westmont location on 9.6.2023. Let me begin with it was external issue laptop screen could not be closed the hinge was unaligned. I was told there would be a 49.00 diagnostic charge, I confirmed there was no issue with the internal computer performance of internal computer was in tack. In order for the computer to be looked at by a tech I paid the 49.00 dollars. I was provided a receipt and the following information it would be 3 to 5 days for tech to look at it and provide me a quote as to how much it would cost to repair. With direction that if anytime I needed status or information pertaining to this repair, Micro Center provided a direct line to tech/repair department, along with an additional number if customer would prefer texting, along with online website in real time on the progression of the repair. Sounds good so far right? Nope not even close. It had been about 7 days no word no estimate to repair, so I called that number "they" provided to call and speak with a tech, on the status and why i had no quote on the cost to repair, I at least called a dozen times and the line rings off the hook, no one answers at the number Micro center provided, so I texted "them" which is a different number only texts, no response, 48 hours later no response. So I searched for a main number to the store as no where on the receipt does it have the stores direct number. With much frustration I was able to find another number, the person I spoke to patched me to the the tech/repair department. I inquired as to why the number they provided me just rings off the hook, reply we are short handed, I inquired about my text, reply we usually reply with in two hours, but again they are short handed. I asked to speak to the tech who was handling my repair he is out to lunch, but he assured me the tech would return my call by end of business day, guess what no call back, no text. The following day a reply via text $245.00 to repair, I texted back with additional questions, was that quote out the door and what kind of guarantee would be provided, again no reply. So begins another day of phone calls, checking website, texts. I finally made contact with a live person he answered my questions and I gave him approval to move forward with repair. Two weeks later no computer but they did order a part first was told the part was broken than was told it was not the right part. This soap opera has yet to be resolved it has been ongoing. Micro Center may sale excellent products, competitive pricing, and knowledgeable sales people, but if you need something fixed buyer be warned. Computer repair is a whole other animal. Moral of the story: they fail to communicate, when they do communicate it is misinformation, commitments are not met, lack of follow up, and their wonderful process to stay in contact with customers at all times via special phone number, or text, or via their web site, yeah no not so much, good luck with that. I've driven by this place a number of times and given the lack of B&M stores any more (CompUSA, Tiger Direct) or dubious reliability with the remaining one(s) (Best Buy), I figured this might be a good spot to take my computer for repairs if needed. Well, lately I've been encountering a "Low Disk Space" popup when I start my computer up, so time to check the place out. I go to their website and see a grid that shows "Repair Pricing" from $29.99 - $69.99. This is an old computer, so keeping it cheap is essential - this pricing structure looks like it will accommodate that. There is some unspecific verbiage about other parts - but I'm figuring that the "Upgrade / Install" hard drive price involves reallocating space or the like on my current hard drive. So I call the place up as it's late in the afternoon and will take about an hour to get there. I ask the person who answered phone (after I pressed a few numbers to get to the right place) about the pricing on the website and explain that I'm having low memory issues when signing on. I'm told that yes, they do that and the process takes about an hour. Gonna be a little tight with my schedule, but I'm anxious to get this done, so out I head. Got there and walked up to the repair area. Waited awhile as there was a customer ahead of me, she finishes and I step up. I tell the customer service rep of what I need and what I saw on their website. He doesn't seem to be as familiar with this page on their site, but onward we forge. After a little bit of looking things over, he tells me that the pricing on the website is correct. Thumbs up - so far. Then he says that I'll l have to pick a hard drive out... wasn't expecting that one. Then he tells me that a new hard drive will require a re-install of Windows - if I want them to do it, ,that will be about $100. So what I thought would be a $60 quick fix is now in the $200 range - not the kind of money that I really want to be spending on a laptop that's about 7 years old. Here's the thing... had the person who answered the phone simply mentioned that the price on the website was strictly a labor charge and that there might be parts charges or that I could bring my own parts (which would have stirred more questions in my mind), then I could have avoided a roughly two hour round trip that ended up netting both me and Micro Center nothing. As noted above, there was an inference near that chart that additional parts may be needed - but when I asked and was told it'll take about an hour, it sounded as if the upgrade as priced would be all that I'd need. I'm giving the place three stars because the way my call was handled was about the way it would have been handled at Best Buy - in an average manner at best. I just wish that more techie service people would realize that average Joe's like me don't have an in depth knowledge of the workings of a computer. Most of us don't, as many of us use IT where we work and have a whole department that takes care of IT problems so we don't need to worry about them. I'm good-great with using some applications... but the functional side of IT is an abyss to me. I'm not a big "yelper" or one to write reviews, but I'm SO thankful I walked into this store yesterday. It's a horrible feeling waking up to use your computer and there's no desktop...just a blinking folder with a question mark. After a few google searches, it was pretty clear to me there could be something seriously wrong with my hard drive. Great. Not the best way to start your morning. After two trips to the Apple store I was told my hard drive was fine - good news, but that I would most likely need to replace the cable in the hard drive. Since my 2010 MacBook Pro is considered "vintage" in the tech (Apple) world, they no longer carry any parts for this model. I was also conveniently locked out of my Apple account and wasn't able to look up repair centers using my Apple ID. Really Apple? Luckily, one of their nice employees tipped me off to head over to Micro Center. Boy am I glad I did. These guys were honest and up-front from the start. More importantly, everyone there was really nice. There were a few guys who helped me, but some of the names I got were Raif, Eric, Andrew and Nicolas. Not only did these guys completely fix and restore my laptop, but they did it in less than a few hours. I walked in there around 1pm and got a call around 3:45 pm telling me my laptop was up and running. I was originally told they might have to order the cable and it could take up to a week. Beware of incapable return/exchange personnel who don't know proper exchange procedure. Now I gotta drive another 2 hours (one way) for the inconvenience as a result of a botched product exchange that was messed up by store CSR (Hugo G) to REBUY an item that I wanted to exchange in-store. Not only did I want to exchange an item -I wanted to spend MORE for the item I was exchanging an existing item towards. I still go to this brick-and-mortar store to support Microcenter instead of buying exclusively online, however, this experience will be my last Microcenter purchase and they have lost my business. Go to Amazon or another tech online retailer where the Customer Service procedures are/may be better. If a person at the Return/Exchange can't perform the duty to EXCHANGE an item -why are they working there? The on-duty manager was indifferent when consulted so that made it even worse. If an employee is indifferent and incompetent, they can do without your business. I am sure there are properly trained CSRs in this store but to have someone working a Return/Exchange station that shrugs because they botched an exchange is unacceptable. His solution for the botched exchange was for me to apply for the store credit card OR pay full price for the item I came in for the exchange. Essentially, he wanted me to buy the second item full price instead of doing the exchange process properly and just pay for the difference like any normal store does everyday on a POS (Point of Sale) terminal. read more

Tons of Gaming Computers. We chose to build our own. The line was long but when they got to us the guy spent a lot of time time with us and helped my son pick out all the parts. My first impression walking into this store is that the interior design and layout are archaic and boring. Having been to other Microcenter locations before, I was admittedly surprised by how different they were from each other. However, this isn't a home furniture store so it's not like the interior design needs to look great. For this reason I'll weigh this downside lightly (minus 0.5 stars). Personally it doesn't bother me too much because I usually already know what I'm going to buy when I come and am therefore in-and-out of the store quickly, but a more modernized interior could probably get me (and many others too I would imagine) to stay and browse inside for longer. On the other hand, the computer hardware here is NOT archaic. This Microcenter carries the latest graphics cards, solid state disks, routers, etc., and from multiple brands and OEM vendors too. The workers here are knowledgeable, whereas workers at other electronics stores often just pretend to be knowledgeable. They also don't try to upsell you things, and aren't pushy with trying to get you to buy extended warranties. (They will offer you the extended warranty, but won't ask twice or give you weird looks when you decline.) Lastly, they are great at helping locate items in stock. For example, searching for a specific network adapter in an entire aisle of network adapters here felt like looking for a needle in the haystack. Yet when I finally asked for help, the worker was able to find the adapter very quickly. This speediness wasn't an isolated occurrence, but was rather the norm! My only gripe with the customer service is that it doesn't seem to be policy for them to approach you to ask if you need help. In most cases you have to go to them instead. (Minus another 0.5 stars). However, I consider this to be only a minor issue because they are sufficiently staffed. Pro tip: the Microcenter website is very accurate with identifying how many of a particular item are in stock. Out of the countless times I've been here, I've never experienced a situation where the store was out of stock for an item despite the website saying that they did have the item. read more

I'll be as short and sweet but as descriptive as possible. Here is goes: I came to Micro Center on high recommendation from a few very knowledgeable friends who also had great experiences at this location. My intention was to enter the store, find someone to help me and pick out a build. I had a budget of around 3-5k, and was an easy customer. I was greeted by Norbert who helped me exactly as I needed to be helped. I haven't worked with computers for around 10+ years so I needed help. He walked me through everything step by step, helped me apply for the Micro Center credit card which I used, and answered all my questions very well. He consistently paused throughout the process to ask me questions or to offer me many chances to inquire about things or ask him anything about each item. I appreciated his help very much and he was just the type of sales person I needed and was looking for. He did end up mixing up one part but please it is no problem and was easily fixed. The tech who built the computer, Kristian, was professional, great communication, short and brief but detailed. His install work, especially the wire management was 10/10. Give this guy a raise. There were two guys there the day I picked up my build, a very friendly and genuinely nice Wes who I thought was such a nice guy. The other guy looked tired and annoyed, and didn't make eye contact with me. I know this sounds weird, but the guy wasn't nice and seemed bothered. I was a moment from asking for management to complain about him but I just wanted to get out of there and still be happy. I had great experiences to that point and was picking up a $4,000 system. I expect friendliness when I pick it up, even if it is fake. The guy that checked me out when I picked up the build last night was Kahan, or Kalahari or something. I never complain but that guy should not work with the public. I could see Wes seemed uncomfortable with how unfriendly and how inattentive Kalahari or Kahan was, but he stayed back. You should take aside this Kahan guy and coach him. Just a suggestion (please don't use this to discipline anyone, just use to help other customer's experiences) Both times I entered the store, it was very clean and organized. I was always approached by someone within moments, and that really pleased me as a customers. I hate going into stores and feeling like they don't want to help me. Once I picked out an item and a salesperson put a sticker onto the package I am guessing to identify who helped me pick it out. I liked the salesperson but I did not like the sticker process, or having someone place a sticker on my product. I know that sounds totally anal, but I didn't say anything and I'm just passing this along. Maybe change that process. The guys in the monitor section were smirking at Norbert while I followed him around the store. I noticed. It was funny, but Norbert went above and beyond. I walked in there as an easy customer needing an experienced computer dude to walk me around and help me figure out my build, which I had a good idea of already. Your guy Norbert was not going to let me make a mistake or be unsatisfied, OR let me make a hasty decision on anything. So Norbert 10/10 super knowledgeable and friendly. GREAT EXPERIENCE. Line to get inside went relatively fast and proper precautions were taken, with being offered a mask and hand sanitizer upon entering the store. Take what you have from Best Buy, formerly Radio Shack and soon to be Fry's electronics and combine them all together in a perfect harmony of tech goodness. After being disappointed with other such retailers, MicroCenter still stands today, even miss those days of EggHead software for those of you who remember that. I was directed here by Apple to repair my 2012 iMac. Apple told me that the "kids" at the Apple store wouldn't know how to repair my "old" computer so I drove 45 minutes to Microcenter. They were very honest about pricing,$39.99 to diagnose. They called before going any further. I needed a new hard drive and a new heat sensor -they quoted me 285 however the final cost was only 269, I know not a huge difference but still, I pretty much expected them to go over. They offered me an additional warranty for $150 to protect the entire computer for two more years, which I declined, and they were not pushy about at all. Overall - a positive experience. read more

The place gets a solid "meh" from me. 3 stars. On the plus side: Large store, huge inventory of just about every computer, part or accessory you could think of or want, clean and well-organized. There are not that many brick-and-mortar tech stores around any more, especially since Radio Shack has now disappeared from Illinois and Gregg shut down. In the fast-changing world of technology, their stock typically has the current items. They routinely have specials on various items like hard drives, power supplies, computer cases, etc. that are actually good deals.I have bought there in the past and will continue to do so, especially for larger items that are awkward to ship, are not high priced or something that I really, really need right away. On the negative: Last time I was in there (about May/June 2017), I went to the back BYO area to find a small part and there was NOBODY around to help me locate it. Finding someone knowledgeable and helpful can be hit or miss. I have had to hunt down staff before - and without without success. Prices for a lot of items, particularly cables, adapters, accessories, components, etc. are often way out of line. As always, it pays to Shop Around (my Mama told me). They used to send me sales flyers but haven't heard from them in a long, long time. More hit-or-miss. And, of course, on the bottom line you are paying Illinois sales tax on everything. It really adds up on big-ticket items. And Beware the dreaded sticker assault. Their staff is on sales commission. They place their name stickers on your purchases so the cashier can record the credit. But even if they don't actually help you, random sales people will approach and offer to stick your items with their names. Mostly for the big ticket stuff. Don't feel bad about removing their stickers if they really didn't help you. I don't feel bad. I have never taken a computer in for service, but other postings I see here show that to be very problematic. Who knows who they have somewhere in a back room messing with your data? Probably the same with all the other corporate chains as well. I highly recommend Han's System in Westmont for computer service and repair. Mr. Han has been in business for many, many years in the same location and his unanimous 5-star ratings say it all. Knowledgeable, very reasonable prices and you know who exactly you are dealing with. I have personally bought various used computer equipment from him over the years and have always been very satisfied. So there you have it. MC gets a so-so. It has its place. But it's only one of many players so Shop Around. read more

Yesterday I went to Micro Center in Westmont. I read on the Apple website that they were an Apple certified repair center and they would have everything needed to repair the keyboard on my Mac PowerBook. I approached the service area and was met by a person coming from the backroom. I started to explain that the keys were sticking. He immediately said most often sticking keys was due to liquid on spilling on the keyboard. I assured that hadn't happened and that Apple had put out a service advisory on keyboard issues. While I attempted to find the service advisory on the web, he went into the back room. He came back and told me that they could do it but it would cost $40 to do even a cursory exam. He also suggested that I go to the Apple Store as my computer seemed to be working fine. What I didn't like: The assumption he made right at the beginning that I was at fault because I spilled liquid on it. His lack of knowledge about the service advisory from Apple about issues with the keyboard. The fact that no one said there would be a $40 fee to initiate Apple approved repairs. His assumption that the computer was working fine (if it had been fine, why would I have been there to have it repaired?). That I could go to the Apple store to get it repaired (gee, why didn't I think of that?). Yes, and that is what I should have done but Micro Center is closer to home and its website said it welcomes walk-ins. Anyone with familiarity with Apple would know to get an appointment with at the Genius Bar could take a couple of days and I was really hoping to have the computer repaired as soon as possible. So, as I told him, I will not go back to Micro Center for anything. read more

A month ago, my friend told me he went to Westmont, IL location and he was singled out and ID'd for no reason other than because he was asian. I then decided to visit Westmont for the first time on April 11 with a different friend of mine. We came at 6am and waited until it opened at 11am. One of the managers, named Lydia(I was told), denied my friend when he wanted to pay for a GPU we received a voucher for. She kept repeating "I already gave you a voucher this month." That is impossible. It is our first time visiting the Westmont location and meeting this manager. We were shocked, confused and hurt. After explaining to her that it is indeed our first time here, she finally let us pay (probably when they checked his ID in the system and realized his purchase history is non-existent). She was still upset and said "I know I gave you a voucher already." before walking away. She sincerely believed she saw my Asian friend before - but we have never met her before. She jumped to conclusions and refused my friend's RIGHT (we waited 5 hours in line and were first in line) to purchase a GPU - simply because of her racist judgement. The worst part, she didn't even apologize. She walked away from our conversation STILL believing we are in the wrong. It is even more ridiculous that she is a manager and a racist one at that. read more

Wow, customer service on steroids! I have to say kudos to the team at this location for going above and beyond the typical level of customer service. The store manager approached us, introduced himself and gave us his card reminding us to let him know if we needed anything. A few minutes later as we approached customer service, the front end manager greeted us with the same enthusiasm. A few minutes later we were approached by the customer service manager asking us if we needed help and introducing himself. WOW! either they just went through perfect employee training or we look suspicious and the niceness was all a ploy...i'm going to go with the former :) Note: we were brought back down to earth a few minutes later when we checked out at Target. read more

A friend suggested Micro Center for a refurb laptop. I found what I needed on the website and picked it up at the Westmont store, 45 minutes away. I was impressed with the store layout and the friendly staff. I made a few purchases ancillary to the CPU and a couple of things from the hobby department. I took the Lenovo home and opened the box and was surprised and disappointed to see that there was no power cord. I called customer service and was told that they're generally NOT included, but I could come in and purchase a universal cord for $20... I never would have considered asking if a cord was included. This was not my first computer purchase and I've never heard of a power supply not being included. If this is SOP for your store, I don't understand why your associates or even the website don't state this clearly. I would have paid the $20 while I was there so that I could utilize my laptop when I got home. Instead, I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver one. I'll find it hard to recommend Microcenter in the future. Update: the good people at Micro Center have reached out and made a valid attempt at fixing this issue. Thanks to the help of one of my tech savvy friends, I found the laptop of my dreams for the best possible price at Micro Center. I ain't gonna lie. Places like this scare me. They see me coming. They know I'm going to ask 1000 silly questions. Possibly cause more than a few headaches and head shakes. BUT since I knew what I wanted, I felt a bit more confident. The gentleman that sold me my laptop was fantastic. He gave me a tutorial on how I could use my new laptop before he even knew I was going to buy(I def was, but he thought I was just looking). He showed me how it could make my life easier, how I could use it for the things I wanted to use it for. Didn't try to sell me on all the bells and whistles. What a disappointment. Upon shopping around 1pm today at micro center I was not approached by one staff to ask if I needed help (and I did). A young lady (who was some kind of management; I heard her telling other staff what to do) passed me at least 5 times and asked people around me if they needed help. I even saw her double up with another employee with a customer. Last time I was here the cashier forgot my receipt and didn't ask if I wanted it emailed to me (which they always do). Was here the other day looking for an inexpensive tablet. Saw an ASUS tablet that was open box for $60 and bought it. When I got back to work I noticed the camera didn't work, disappointed I went back to return it and low and behold they swapped it for a brand new one! My son bought a Lenovo tablet in June but did not need it right away. I thought he should be using it and tried to set it up and it would not authenticate on WiFi. It seems that the item was not new. I tried to register it to take advantage of the warranty but the site said it was beyond the grace period. He will try and take it back but it won't happen soon since he lives across town. Wow! Really great prices ,much better than Fry's and even online catalogs.There are a lot of good staff here and they will tell you what you need or don't need,for your purposes. Hubby is building a PC and has gotten great advice .Not sure what the store was like a few years ago,but,it seems to have a great selection and well stocked. Better to shop here than through the main stream limited options offered by big chain electronic stores like Best Buy, Frys or HH Gregg. An especially nice offering is that you can shop online for whatever you need and pick it up in-store. Your item will be ready for pick up in 18 minutes or less! No hassle, no waiting, and no lines. I can spend HOURS in Micro Center! There are LCD monitors(as in TV), computers, software, digital cameras, sales and sales and sales, books, 52 different types of CD cases--OK Disneyland for geeks. There is an area just for the DIY types to build their own monster 'puter--or the types like me who fried her motherboard and just needed a replacement and didn't want to have to transfer all the data from her hard drive. They do have a website and you can get email updates. If you ask a question, you actually get an answer! And the answer makes sense! Their prices are at least comparable to the bigbox know-nothing stores and they have a good return policy. read more

This is a great store. They do have a huge selection and the prices are really good. I often find many things cheaper then Best Buy and CompUSA. The staff is always surrounded by customers, so good luck getting help. The coolest thing is FREE computer advice. That's right FREE! There's a room by customer service where they will take as much time discussing your computer. They just won't look at it. That costs money. I have had them diagnose things for free, that PC King down the street couldn't figure out. Negative point is that they want your personal info when you buy something. read more

Lots of stuff here (see other reviews for details); most useful for me is the wide selection of books. If you're not sure what you need or are looking for something obscure, this is your best bet (for bricks and mortar, anyway). Though the last time I was there a lot was on clearance and it looked like they might be cutting back. A pity if this is so. Update 2006 Oct. 30: They *have* cut back the books section by about half to make room for a gaming department. The shelves are not too well organized, but you can probably find what you want if it's there. Still your best bet if you need to browse before you buy. Fry's may be catching up. read more
