I recently visited with Shabana Mohammed at Dr. Rao's office regarding allergy shots. The…read moretelehealth mtg went well and I appreciated Ms. Mohammed's demeanor and professionalism. Prior to my appointment I asked the receptionist to call and verify that my insurance (UHC) covered this type of medical treatment, and asked for any out of pocket costs up front. I was told that this sort of allergy treatment was preventative and would be covered 100% by my insurance. My in office visit occurred on Wed, 8/26. When leaving the appointment I checked in with the nurse receptionist again to confirm that nothing was due and she agreed that was the case. She pressed me to schedule my first allergy shot appointment but I was hesitant as they'd yet to deliver a clear treatment plan with costs. When I inquired as to when I could expect to receive an itemized plan I was told "well you can call your insurance company and find out". I was taken aback and politely reminded the young lady that wasn't my area and that I'd prefer if she do it as I clearly wasn't licensed personel. She reluctantly agreed and I advised that I'd like to discuss things further with Mrs. Mohammed before moving forward. During my follow up virtual appointment I listed my concerns to Mrs. Mohammed as I felt that the staff was a bit complacent and unwilling; she assured me that wasn't the case and let me know that in spite of the office not having a billing person at the time the staff was very competent and familiar with the coding procedures. Two days later I was hit with a $561 out of pocket bill for the office visit and allergy skin tests that were performed. I contacted my insurance company and confirmed that the charges were correct. From there I called Dr. Rao's office to speak with the nurse receptionist regarding the issue. She (Kailynn) informed me that she "never actually called my insurance company, but did a quick check online". She went onto say that "almost all insurances cover allergy tests/injections so she didn't think this would be any different". Kailynn added that she'd conferred with her mother who had been working in billing/coding for over 20 years, so my insurance had to be wrong. I asked that she resubmit the claims using another CPT code with a lower costs due to the complete miscommunication. Her response of "that's fraudulent" caught me off guard as her failure to correctly and honestly verify insurance coverages could also be construed as fraudulent. This occurred the afternoon of Monday, 8/31 around 2p, so I asked that she have Mrs. Mohammed contact me by end of day or first thing in the morning at the absolute latest. I didn't receive a callback until late afternoon on Friday, 9/4; four days later. The voice message that was left by Mrs. Mohammed stated that she had indeed "received my request to call but had been busy and would like to hear what was communicated to me from my insurance company." I called back the following business day around 10:25am and was told that Mrs. Mohammed was on a telehealth call so I asked that she return my call as soon as possible. It is now the end of day and I've heard nothing. I tried to reach her twice more to no avail. This providers service is without a doubt a total failure. I've since started treatment with another physician and was sent a thorough treatment plan with all costs only 2 hours after our virtual appointment. Should you visit this facility you will be told that they're quite busy as they service a wide array of patients, but in hindsight they're simply understaffed and ill-trained. While I'm glad I didn't begin allergy treatments with this physician, I'm still on the hook for $561. In light of the economic downturn and health pandemic that we're currently living in, I strongly feel his could have easily been avoided by clear and correct information.

Be careful. I was lured to this doctor after reading about PANDAS testing. I took my son 3 times…read moreand had the typical office co-pay. Since this clinic specializes in onsite allergy testing they recommended my son be allergy tested after the PANDAS test came back inconclusive. I was told it would be covered by my insurance and was in fact per-qualified covered day of testing. 30 days later they billed me $750. Saying oh by the way your insurance didn't actually cover it. Plus an additional lab bill of $300! I never even met this Doctor Rao. Somethings off here.
