What an adorable restaurant! It's tucked away in a shopping center off Midlothian Turnpike but don't let that steer you away, the food is fresh and delicious! Our table ordered the fried chicken sandwich (which our waitress explained is the #1 ordered menu item), the sesame chicken salad and the fried green tomato BLT. All were absolutely delicious. This place was wonderful! My friend and I went for brunch and had an amazing meal! We started off with drinks. I got the "hot girl" and it was super light and refreshing and delicious. Our friends have dined here previously and have had good things to say about it so they took me here for my birthday dinner. Yelp reviews were very good and all that I have read about the chef and his experiences led me to believe this would be an outstanding meal. Sadly, I was disappointed. It was a very busy night but they should have expected that based on reservations but service was very slow and poor. It took far too long to take our drink orders and they did not even arrive until we had to ask after our appetizers course arrived. Then the person who delivered the drinks (not our waiter) did not know what drinks she was delivering and 2 of the 4 were wrong and we had to wait even longer to get the right drinks. Main courses took long as well. I had the pork chop with vanilla and apricot jus and "baked beans". The beans were bland. The double chop was dry throughout and there was barely enough jus on the plate for the size of the chop and to get some of the flavor with each bite. Maybe it was a bad night service wise but the food was just so so. Not sure I'll be returning. read more

After hearing rave reviews we were very excited to try the Midlothian Chef's Kitchen. The restaurant is situation in a strip mall at the far end. As you walk in the unassuming establishment you are pleasantly surprised at the modern look and feel. We were seated immediately with a reservation and the waitstaff was very attentive. The cocktails looked interesting so we tried the Hot Girl S**t and the MCK (old fashioned). Both drinks were delicious. The bread and salted honey butter was amazing. For appetizers we ordered the charcuterie, salmon tartare and chestnut soup. The soup was poured at the table and looked amazing. I would have appreciated a breakdown of what was on our charcuterie board. For entrees we had the seared rockfish and oxtail. No food was left behind on any of our plates! We left room for dessert so one couple tried the dark chocolate ganache and we tried the brown butter-salted caramel Pot de Crème. A perfect ending to a tasty meal. The restroom could have been cleaner although it was the end of the night so some grace is given. It could do with a good deep clean. We will definitely come again since the menu changes and we look forward to more amazing dishes. read more

Three words to sum it up.. NO, NO, NO! Our server was nice enough. We were seated promptly and attended to in an appropriate amount of time. She informed us they were out of a few things.. one of which was one of the featured entrees. I know they change their menu frequently, but we came in at like 6:30pm; not 8pm. No reason to run out of something that early in the night. Regardless, we ordered and food was okay. Nothing that knocked our socks off or was particularly memorable. Portions were appropriate size for a fine dining restaurant, but the quality and creativeness wasn't. A complete fail on the food. Here's the worst part. I was given the check and completed the closing of my bill, including tipping. I didn't really review the check, though I did think it was a bit high. A few days later as I'm reviewing my credit card activity, I see the charge on my account did not match what I had completed at the restaurant. Then, as I took a closer look at my receipt (I did still have it, as this was a business dinner) I see that they added a tip. Now, not only did the server not tell us tip was added (nor was it written on the menu or anywhere else), but AGAIN the total I wrote didn't match what they charged me. It was $20 higher. I called the restaurant and the girl I spoke with said she was the manager. She didn't listen and tried to answer before fully understanding the issue. When she finally let me finish she looked up my check number and saw that the tip was automatically added but saying the server must have mis-keyed the amount. As I'm looking at this I see where it was entered that we were a part of 183 people; not just 2. The system automatically added tip for a party that size, but nothing that said it's not possible to have a party that size in a venue that holds maybe half of that. Still no explanation, or apology, for over-charging me. They begrudgingly reversed the over-charge, but this is egregious and I don't see how both of these happened without them realizing. I feel (just my opinion) that restaurants see business meals as opportunistic, since people don't scrutinize as closely when it's not their money. I guess they didn't realize that I (and others) treat the company dollars like my own. Bottom line, poor food and less-than-ethical practices. I'll go elsewhere. read more

Huge shout out to the bartender!!! We went on a week night for some drinks and sat at the bar - were greeted right away as it was just us and another couple at the bar. Nothing on the drink menu jumped out at us but the bartender said he had some seasonal cocktails he was working on if we would like one of those instead. Of course that piqued our interest and he thoughtfully explained 4 other cocktails that weren't on the menu, each with a different liquor. He let us sample one of the ingredients and chit chatted with us for the rest of the evening. We tried 3 out of the 4 and they were all delicious. Made our first visit to Chef's Kitchen and it was a very good experience. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere was comfortable and refined, and the food was delicious. I must admit for my own taste the menu was a little limited, but that's probably a personal thing. it's certainly a wonderful place for a quiet dinner for a couple or a small group of very close friends. So while I was exploring the area I came across a sign for brunch with an arrow pointing down the road. Brunch is my weakness and the sign said all the right things.... I found myself walking through the doors of the "Chef's Kitchen" moments later. The restaurant had recently started taking inside seating guests . Tables were spaced appropriately and staff had masks and it appears busing and cleaning procedures all took customer safety and COVID 19 in mind. I started with coffee and a water- coffee is excellent by the way . I settled on the chicken sandwich at the recommendation of my server . The sandwich is undoubtedly delicious. It was a little odd at first because it was very moist yet majorly crispy. At first I thought it was undercooked but as I dove in I realized that instead of a chicken breast- the cut was thigh meat which has a higher fat content . Genius! Wow! So glad to have made a visit to this local eatery! Absolutely amazing food and to top it off the prices are very reasonable. My girlfriend and I were in town for the night from DC and decided to check this place out and we were both extremely impressed! For starters we ordered the roasted chestnut soup, burrata and compressed pear, and the tuna tartare. The soup was rich and satiny, so delicious! The burrata toast was a great mix of sweet and savory, just perfect! We also really enjoyed the tuna tartare, super fresh and I actually liked the cucumber much more than the traditional bread it's usually served with. For our mains we ordered the roasted chicken and the seared duck breast. Both were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. I had the chicken and I must say, it was easily in the top 3 best chicken dishes I have had from any restaurant. My girlfriend ordered the duck and she more than enjoyed the dish. Of course I tried some and it was just as delicious as the chicken! They also have a fantastic bar here and a great drink menu if that's what you're looking for. The live music was an additional bonus! I don't think you can ask for much more in a great restaurant experience! This place is a must visit in my opinion. There was nothing that had a redeeming quality except for my sons ice cream sandwich. We were excited for the experience and didn't mind the price point until we got the food. We arrived and we're seated right away for our 8pm reservation. It took half an hour to get sodas. Another half an hour to get the salad, and so on. The food was TERRIBLE. The salad was so salty it was almost impossible to eat. The main courses were all over the place. Walking in... love the ambience. This place use to house Shane's BBQ. Very cool and airy... tons of sunlight with cute little teardrop lights from the ceiling. Sort of the feel of Brenner Pass in the city and Tazza on the southside- but I would say I like the chef's kitchen setup and seating better. Definitely could see this place in the city though. So we have picked up the take and bake meals which are awesome perfect for our family of 4! We finally went Friday to celebrate Mother's Day early with my husband and kids. We were able to scan the QR code and access the menu. The app makes it seem like you can order through the app but in reality it all still goes to the server. At any rate, we started off with some cocktails... Jalapeño Paloma (If you like spicy don't hesitate, just get it ... so good), and the Royal 75 (tasty Prosecco elderflower drink). As a starter we ordered the Lamb Neck egg rolls( sauce and eggrolls so good... I probably could've drank the sauce LOL). Waitress was very helpful on entree selection... she said both pasta dishes, the salmon and the duck breast are awesome. We were between the pasta dishes and the duck and decided to go pasta. I got the Lamb Agnolotti (imagine rectangle raviolis filled with lamb... thick honestly delicious... my only complaint is that the pasta could've been cooked slightly longer and add a dash of salt but I was fine without since the asparagus/ramp pesto- I think were a great compliment), and my husband got the Fried Calamari Squid Ink Pasta (Calamari was cooked to perfection super crisp, pasta was cooked perfectly, more like Angel hair pasta, but we both agreed the pasta was a hint on the salty side.... Could've used that in my dish lol), my son got the Kid's Chicken Sandwich and fries (we requested without the bun, so OMG best fried skin on chicken we've had at a restaurant... they need to make a chicken and waffle with this chicken... lightly battered... chicken was juicy... just knocked this out of the park... the fries while good it was also too salty... but who doesn't love a salty fry:), then finally my daughter got their kids pasta buttered with Parmesan ( So remember when I said my pasta was slightly undercooked... well my daughters was completely undercooked.... I love some casarecce pasta if cooked right because it's chewy when cooked al dente. At any rate we bit into one and immediately realized it was undercooked... my daughter said it stuck to her teeth. Anyway, hate sending back food but it was $10 for buttered parm noodles. It came back, first bite was quite salty, while cooked better it was still a little less than al dente but a little less cooked than my agnolotti... sad just realized I forgot to take a pic of it but I guess you can imagine why). Honestly, if the food was not salty and pasta not undercooked... it probably would've been the best meal we've had in awhile... though I would say an awesome meal we've had was Lillie Pearl... which I really need to review. We ended the night with the Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble with Vanilla Gelato... so good, just order it... if I could've had more of the gelato it would've been great because there was way more crumble vs gelato ratio. If it wasn't for the over salted/ under cooked pasta I would've given it a 5... wanted to give it a 3.5...but the actual food flavors and concepts were great which put it at a 4. I would go back... I'm giving this restaurant two stars because they were able to seat three of us on a busy Friday night and the place has a nice atmosphere. The food however, no stars. Both fish entrees were warm at best and very plane according to my wife. I'm not a fish person so I had the chicken, it was ok but for the money it was the smallest portion I think I've ever had in a restaurant. About the size of two large chicken finger. No stars for service either. The waiter took away one of our unfinished plates before we had a chance to let him know we were taking it home. Additionally in an attempt to be funny and clever he made a comment that was insulting to my wife. For the money we spent it was definitely not worth the price. Food was atrocious. I think the chef just wanted everything to taste like an herb garden. Including dessert. Barely touched my entree, took one bite of dessert and hardly an apology or inquiry why. First , the bread was excellent French bread. But whyyyyy is it served with sweet butter? I love sweet butter, but I'm not at Texas Roadhouse having a yeast roll. The apps--dumplings bastardized and salmon tartare that was more like a mayonnaise and dill salmon salad. For mains, I ordered pasta that was so bad it's hard to know where to start. The funniest is that the 'poached' egg was hard boiled, hahaha. If you can't even poach an egg, how are you "fine" dining? Not to mention the pasta was hard and completely flavorless. A nice runny yolk would have helped, but not made up for the hard bland noodle. My wife got the short ribs which were at least edible and came with a deep fried ball of dill infused potato salad, if that's your thing. For dessert- the 'spiced' marshmallow was also unedible, why is it a savory herb?????? The peach cobbler also had something mixed in to ruin it. Dessert tasted like it was made in a dispensary. Wine list was very limited, dominated by over (very) priced Napa. We ordered a lovely Languedoc red wine, though still marked well above retail even for a restaurant. Dinner tonight at Midlothian Chef's Kitchen was spectacular. I had read all these reviews about long waits and poor service but we experienced neither. We were seated promptly despite it being very busy at a nice table with comfy chairs. Our waiter, Will, was THE BEST. Personable, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu, ingredients, and wine pairings. He made excellent recommendations and was very helpful with my very picky mommy. The apricot jam on the charcuterie board was a delicious surprise and the pork belly with broccoli was too die for. I could have eaten 74 "Applebee's sized" portions of it. My husband's filet was cooked to his preferred temp and my carbonara was a perfect al dente. The poached egg on top added a level of creamy goodness beyond words. We had such a pleasant experience. We really enjoyed the food... but we will NEVER go back again. Last night my wife and I went to dinner at the Midlothian Chef's Kitchen. We had reservations through OpenTable at 5:45. We got there five minutes prior and were immediately seated. As the hostess was showing us to our seats, she took us to a small table for two in the middle of the floor in a high traffic area. My wife pointed to a same-sized table up against a wall and asked if we could sit there. The hostess' response was "we have you here" and that was it. So we sat. While they may have assigned us so they could even out the coverage by servers, it's not like we were asking for a window seat or a table with a view. It was a table next to a wall with a fake window and a Christmas tree next to it, a little out of the line of foot traffic. We ordered a bottle of wine, and the charcuterie plate to start. My wife ordered the tenderloin, and I ordered the salmon. Both were very good, and the service was fine. It took us about an hour and a half to finish and as I looked over, the table we had requested was still empty. The server brought my wife the check and she laid down a Midlothian Chef's Table gift card for $50 and a credit card. The server returned a short while later to say that the gift card did not appear to have been activated. My wife explained that we had purchased the gift card from the restaurant earlier in the year when we had tried the restaurant the first time. She even showed her the gift envelope that it came in that was marked as $50. Her original intent was to give this card as a gift to a friend, but we ended up keeping it and wanted to use it last night. Our server didn't really know how to handle this so she escalated it to a woman who was working behind the bar to resolve. I do no know if she was a manager or a bartender. When she came and spoke to my wife she was asking when exactly we got the card and asked if we had the receipt for the purchase. We couldn't remember the day or even month when we ate there previously. She asked if we knew which credit card we had used to purchase the gift card. We did not. At that point we started trying to view different credit card transactions on our phones and even phoned two companies. The woman said that they could possibly search their system if we knew which credit card we used. She said we would need to resolve this somehow because she had no way of knowing if we were ever charged for the purchase of the gift card in which was provided to us by a restaurant employee. She kept reiterating that the card had never been activated. At one point while searching for a specific credit card transaction, she found one on March 12th but I believe that was only a match of the last 4 digits of the credit card. I then went to look at my pictures on my phone and found pictures of my reservation and our entrees from June 5thof this year. My wife was then able to find a credit card transaction on June 5th. I took this information to the woman who found it in their system. When she pulled up the receipt she was able to find the actual receipt from that night which showed the purchase of the giftcard bearing the same number, indicating that the card had indeed been purchased but had not been activated by the restaurant employee at the time. So after 45 minutes to an hour, they were kind enough (sarcasm) to credit us with the $50 for the gift card we had purchased. She said she was glad we were able to resolve this. Glad we were able to find that date and credit card. I don't believe she profusely apologized for the inconvenience... didn't offer anything to make up for wasting our time. What bothers us most is, what if we had given this card as a gift? Non-activated, non-working, no sympathy for the restaurant. I mean they don't have these gift cards on the registers of your local grocery stores... the only way you get them is by purchasing them from the store. Is there a lot of gift card scams going on at the Midlothian's Chef's Table? I don't know if the time they spent dealing with this was worth $50, but it was not worth our time. Maybe the staff at Midlothian Chef's Table can get some much needed customer service training, but it's too late for that to benefit my family. We will never go back. read more

Listen up...If you have yet to check out this gem tucked away in Midlothian then you need to stop what you are doing and listen. Hands down some of the best dishes I have ever had, and I bet if you check it out, you will most certainly agree. Chef Dunlap clearly takes his time when he methodically designs his dishes...and let me tell you what, you will not be disappointed with the bar program offering choice spirit selections, a curated wine list, and all the local craft beers you would hope to find. Chef David and his wife, Brittney, have it dialed in.... TO A TEE. The burrata and the crispy pork belly are worth waging a war over... not to mention his seafood chowder that tastes like nothing and everything all at once. My father had the sous vide pork tenderloin that made me want to smack someone and I had the rockfish laced with delicate lobster cream sauce. How it is all possible is beyond me. The service and the atmosphere are excellent. We sat at the bar. Austin was the only bartender... who payed excellent attention to us while also knocking out well service...impressive to say the least. I overheard one server, I think his name was Sean (sp), and I was blown away by his table side manner, confidence and hospitality mentality. I really wanted to love this place. I loved the ambiance and the unique menu. But the food was just ok. One dish was so bad, I couldn't even eat more than 2 bites and had to send it back. The lamb egg rolls were absolutely delicious. The dumplings would have been good if they were not drowning in a very salty soup. My friend liked her hanger steak except could have done without the large amount of purée. My main dish was the calamari with squid ink pasta. The pasta had zero flavor, the calamari had no flavor...but whatever the green purée was was horrible. It was over frothed and left a bad taste in my mouth. The consistency of the purée sauce was beyond gross. I am on the fence about trying this place again. I think it's trying too hard with the food and needs to maybe simplify more. Both our entrées were room temperature when served. My broccoli was burnt. The filet mignon was not good. The barbecue flavor didn't seem appropriate for a nice restaurant. I have been impressed with this place in the past. Tonight I was disappointed. The appetizer was delicious , I was expecting the meal to be similar. It was not. Certainly not fair to judge a restaurant on a single Valentine's Day visit, but what a lovely surprise that MCK, packed four-deep at the bar and a line out the door by 8 pm, pulled it off beautifully! We were seated in a side room away from all the commotion, amidst nicely spaced tables. The room nicely lit, its pale walls and interesting wall hangings sedate and unfussy. Imagine they'd pulled in extra help for this super-busy night. The teenager who led us to our table seemed a little overwhelmed by it all, but she was up to the task. Our waitress admitted, when she served our wine, that she had just turned 21 and this was one of her first efforts at uncorking. She did fine. It took about 15 minutes to get our wine and the four small slices of french bread that is provided gratis (with yummy housemade honey butter), not a problem, seeing the rush. We could chat without shouting, rare in any restaurant these days, and sat there recounting other Valentine's Day dinners across our 27 years of marriage. To the food! When I'd made the reservation 2 months earlier, imagined we'd be dining from the regular a la carte menu, so a little surprised to see that the only choice on VD was a $75 3-course fixed price meal. But there were several choices for each course, covering most of the usual a la carte fare, so it was probably what we'd have done anyway. My wife's beet and citrus salad appetizer was piquant and pretty, my lobster stew was tasty but lacked any shred of lobster. A few potato cubes swam in the creamy broth. Her lamb dish was earthy and rich, a fist of lamb with caramelized onions and mushrooms, that she totally dug. I had pork schnitzel, lightly breaded, topped with a generous frizz of citrusy cabbage and carrot shreds. Delicious. We'd ordered a $38 bottle of pinot noir (on the low end of their wine list pricing), too light for her dish, but just right for mine (some Valentine I am!). Her dessert, two thin bars of chocolate ganache and a couple tbs. of ice cream melded really well with the caramelly pot de creme I'd ordered, so we just mixed them all together and went to town on it. Yum! None of our dishes were huge, but taken together, they certainly filled us up with no leftovers. Our bill after tip in the $250 range. That's a lot of money for us, even on Valentine's Day, but the meal ranks as one of our favorites over the years. Based on this one visit, MCK may be one of Richmond's best in our estimation, vying for absolute best south of the river. The service had been on point after that first hiccup, despite the pressures of one of the busiest of nights, and in our side room all was mellow and calm. Found this place on the way back from Richmond to Midlothian. It was a nice day, and I seen they had outdoor seating. When I walked in, the tables were all nicely decorated, I was almost afraid to bring my child in... however, they greeted us at the door, where I asked if they had a children's menu, and they did! My son ordered the chicken sandwich, and it came with a side of fries. When we he got the plate, we could not believe how big his portion was! For myself, I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the cauliflower soup. I have to say, it is the best cauliflower soup I've ever tasted! I'm so glad we decided to stop here, and will definitely be visiting again. I can't wait to try their dinner entrées, and wine tasting! Thank you Chef's kitchen for the great meal today! read more

Nice new place in Midlothian. The pot stickers were incredible. Lots of flavor in the pot stickers the broth was the best part, it coats your tongue making you want more. The dijon salmon was really good with the sauteed cabbage and bacon. The wine is reasonably priced. The desert was a question mark.
