This is a really good place for lunch if you work in the area. Takeout is quick and fairly affordable $10. I have not dined in for lunch so I can't speak on the service. The lunch bento is more than enough for 1 person. An entree, miso soup, 2 rolls and 2 nigiri usually salmon and a whitefish. I usually get the snapper or salmon bento. Liked both. Miso soup is always hot! I cannot stand warm soups. This palce is more Korean and Japanese fusion than a sushi restaurant because you can see the korean influence on the menu. i literally cannot believe i've never been here before, granted it looks a bit far if you're coming from central austin but omg for $15 you can get 6 pieces of sashimi, 5pc nigiri, 4piece of some other roll, and a really large regular salmon roll?? AND a miso soup?? that is absolutely ridiculously and it is most definitely suuuper worth, i can hardly even finish all of it so i'm just thankful that i finally came and tried their lunch. wow!!!! fish wise, the quality is great too, in my opinion on par with haru (another fav restaurant), quality is definitely better than most sushi places in the central austin area when you're looking for casual sushi, and not uchi/fukumoto level places read more

Their lunch specials come out insanely quick too. 2) Their sushi chefs and wait staff are always really nice and responsive. 3) Their food is always fresh smelling, tasting, and I've never had a bathroom adventure due to what they fed me. My family and I had an excellent experience here on our first visit, however the next time was much different. We had ordered a boat and wanted to substitute a roll for the spicy tuna roll as our son does not like spicy food. We found a roll that was the same price, but we're informed that we could not select a different roll: we had to get the spicy tuna one. We had asked why they couldn't provide us with an alternate, or just not add the spice if the roll was in fact freshly prepared. They gave us no reason, other than we could not make any changes. From that point on the service was like night and day from our first experience there. Our previously attentive waitress could rarely be found, empty food plates cluttered our table and the rolls were so poorly constructed they fell apart. We felt very unwelcome, all for simply asking if we could modify a roll so everyone in our group could enjoy it. We will not be returning here again. read more

I've been going here for years and it's consistently good. High quality for reasonable prices. The sushi is always fresh and well presented. Waitstaff can vary from excellent to "is this your first day?" but since I've been doing take-out only for over a year, I can't really give a current impression on that aspect of the business. To-go sushi during this time has been as good and consistent as when eating in for the previous few years. The non-sushi menu items have been hit or miss, so I'd stick with the sushi for a first visit. Midori is in the top 3 for my family's "if we don't cook tonight, what do we want" list. read more

I have been to many sushi restaurants, yet Midori sushi is, by far, my favorite sushi restaurant. I eat there often and their sushi is beyond compare! They have amazing rolls, sashimi, and other creations, such as the Ahi Tower. Their portions are great for the price and you are served miso soup, free, as a starter. I appreciate Midori Sushi's atmosphere too. A lot of American sushi restaurants, that I have been to, don't serve as good food as Midori and feel very American, almost as if you were going to Panda Express. [Trial 1, 1 Jan 2012] Midori. You were so pretty inside with box-y booths and box-y planters, I thought we'd drink sake from mini bamboo boxes. The glasses served their purpose. The decanter was cool with a compartment for ice inside that would not interact/dilute the sake. The sole unfiltered sake available began to have a weird after taste that made me sad. Little plastic banzai trees adorning each plate is interesting, but upon a closer inspection there were droplets of residual sauce on the 'leaves', perhaps from a previous dish, that made me a teensy bit grossed out. But hey, at least you didn't have plasma screens everywhere. And well, that's something. I was going to come back on other occasions to give you a comprehensive 3-trial review, but I can't convince myself to spend mid-upper-tier prices on lower-tier food (and sake). I remember this place having better sushi a few years ago. And before you criticize me for eating sushi on a Sunday, I ate at Midori on Friday. So there. I ordered the Rock and Roll (cucumber, tempura shrimp, masago... I opted for no avocado) first, as one roll anywhere usually fills me up. For $8.95 I got only five pieces, and they tasted almost completely like cucumber. I was hoping the shrimp would be the most pronounced part of the roll. I ate it all, but I was hoping to get more roll for my money. I figured at lunch, I'd get more for $8.95, but I was sorely mistaken. The tempura shrimp was good... when I was able to taste it. Since the roll failed to fill me up, I ordered the tempura appetizer (shrimp, squash, carrots, and onions). The veggies were very good, but I noticed the shrimp (much longer pieces than what was in the roll) had not been deveined, which was a big turn off. Service was great, but it's not enough to make me come back. It's too bad Midori has gone downhill, but for my money I know I can get better rolls elsewhere. They arranged the rolls on a nice catering tray with a lid (without us asking and for no extra charge) and had everything ready right at the time that we'd requested. And all 14 rolls (though we didn't order a bunch of fancy ones) were only $98 with tax. And 5 different people at the party asked where we got the super tasty sushi! Yay Midori! read more

It's pretty good I guess. My expectations were sky high because my friends were gushing for YEARS on how this was hands down the "BEST SUSHI PLACE IN AUSTIN." Ummmmmmm... I don't think so, but it was fairly delicious. I finally decided to try this place out in honor of my friends birthday yesterday. It was harder to find then I thought. Right when I walked in, I felt like I was engulfed by ornaments and little embellishments. It was almost a bit frou frou for me, but I really liked how they used a rooted tree as a backdrop. It looks amazing (attached photos). We were a bit too greedy at the time and ordered a bit too much to handle =\.... Immediately, we asked if they had hamachi kama (yellowtail collarbone) and ordered it when they did. Supposedly the prep time for this itself is about 15 minutes, so it is best to order as early on as you can. Miso Soup: No good, too salty Dumpling Soup: Be careful! Extremely hot; it burnt my tongue! It definitely was bigger than I expected, but the dumplings inside are tasty. Hamachi Kama: I've never really tasted a bad hamachi kama, and this is no exception. Usually it comes with a side of sweet mirin or ponzu (I think!?), but this time it was drizzled with a thicker sweeter sauce. Regardless, it was delightful. Salmon Nigiri: You like salmon? You'll like it here. Super White (Escolar): I could eat this all night. When I eat a piece of nigiri, I have a habit of biting it in half. This can let you know immediately if the fish is fresh or not because if my teeth doesn't slide right through, there is too much stringy connective tissue. Toro Nigiri: I thought that this was pretty fresh and as fatty as can be. It has a distinct fishy taste to it and literally melts in your mouth because of all the fat. Uni Nigiri: No bad if you like Uni. Definitely at acquired taste, but I've had better days. Marilyn Monroe Roll: (The roll that my friend GUSHES about) Pretty damn delicious, if I say so myself. The creamy richness of the avocado really compliments the fattiness of the salmon on top. It also has this hint of sesame oil that makes it to die for! Phoenix Roll: Eh, not my cup of tea. Fry anything and it's good, but with rolls, what are you trying to hide? My dinner partner liked it though, so... it must have not been that bad. Korean Spicy Pork BBQ: Was so full that everything tasted like shit. But no, really, it was still yummy. :) Green Tea/Red Bean Mochi Ice Cream: Never again. The outer mochi part was soggy?? If there were ever a favorite restaurant for me, it would be the paradise I call Midori Sushi. My first time there was years ago on a business lunch with my boss and coworker. Ever since then, no sushi in the continental U.S. has ever impressed me as much. The place is smallish (I think they could afford to expand), but very warm and friendly. Most of the time they greet you in Japanese when you walk in. Not knowing Japanese, I'm guessing it's along the lines of "hello" or "welcome" or "Get ready for the best damn sushi you've ever had." For lunch, I recommend the L14 plate; fresh chunks of sashimi, a delicious rainbow roll, four pieces of chef selected sushi topped off with three of their addicitive house (Phoenix) roll. Even the garnishes are charming. I like to sit up at the sushi bar and watch them make it, and when the guys recognize you as a good customer after a while, you seem to get yours a little bit faster than usual, wink, wink Dinner time is perfect for a light occasion/holiday, and its definitely a fantastic date restaurant. The only downside is that this place is located in NW Austin...not necessarily a hotbed of absolutely fabulous cuisine. But it's worth the trip. Yeah, there's Kenichi and Uchi and all the downtown places, but if you want to give your pocketbook a break and still have fresh, delicious sushi, then Midori is your place. I went to Midori for the first time about a month ago and cannot get enough of the place since. I have been 3 times since then and always have a wonderful experience. Lunch gets very busy so you definitely want to get there early. Dinner is less crowded so the service is very quick in the evening. I have had the Paradise roll, spicy tuna roll and the Cool River roll and each was amazing! The Cool River roll has escolar & tobiko on top and spicy tuna inside (ordered without the "crunch") and is my favorite roll at Midori so far. The Paradise roll has tuna, avocado, green onion, wrapped in rice paper topped with a "special sauce". The sauce is slightly sweet and compliments the roll perfectly. The spicy tuna roll was tasty and spicy without the addition of spicy mayo. Midori uses high quality fish, great presentation, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Midori has 15 wines by the glass (reasonably priced), 19 wine bottles, 10 sakes, Sake 2 Me, 10 beer offerings and Republic Tea. read more

Summary: One of the best Sushi places in Austin (rolls and sashimi). Their food quality (and portions) beat out places like Musashino. Some sushi places might have one really good roll, but Midori has several. If you are looking for an affordable sushi restaurant with generous portions and flavorful rolls, you must try Midori! (It is also good for Sushi beginners since their menu has photos of everything) (6/10) Miso Soup There are not many variations to miso soup at restaurants. What usually differentiates them is the amount of salt and vegetables. The amount of salt in the soup is just right, but comes with only 3 or 4 bits of green onion and lacks tofu. (8/10) Caterpillar Roll Eel, cucumber and avocado with eel sauce on top. This is a standard roll served in all sushi restaurants; however this one is anything but ordinary. The pieces are the right size so you do not over-stuff your mouth. The eel is soft and flavorful, and the roll has sufficient amount of sauce on top. This is a delicious roll that does not even need dipping in soy sauce. (8/10) Phoenix Roll Deep fried roll with chopped red snapper, salmon with Midori spicy sauce on top. If you are looking for a warm, spicy roll, then this is perfect for you! The sauce on this reminds us of the "secret" sauce on the Longhorn roll at Kyoto, but overall a more tasty roll. Once you start eating this, you won't be able to stop. (8/10) Marilyn Monroe Roll Spicy tuna inside, fresh salmon on top with masago, green onions, avocado and special spicy sauce on top. Like most of the fish at Midori, the tuna and salmon are very fresh and soft. The roll has a great combination of ingredients and the spicy sauce on top brings it home. A very solid roll. (6/10) Rock & Roll Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, masago and lettuce. This is our least favorite roll at Midori. The pieces are extremely large and lacks flavor. This one must be dipped in soy sauce, and was nothing like the other rolls we ordered. (7/10) Salmon Sashimi The salmon is soft and tender and does not taste like ocean. They also gave decent portions. Yummy! (8/10) Tuna Sashimi The quality is on par with more expensive sushi restaurants. You won't be disappointed with this delicious tuna! (3/10) Sea Bass Sashimi The Sea Bass is chewy and difficult to eat. We've been told that this is normal for Sea Bass. However, its's similar to the big eye tuna sashimi at Musashino. (10/10) Escolar Sashimi There is a reason why they call this butter fish. This one is our favorite...it's amazingly fresh and smooth. Your mouth will be craving this even after you leave the restaurant. When it comes to sushi, it does not get any better than this folks! (5/10) Albacore Sashimi This one is akin to the sea bass...chewy and rather unpleasant! (6/10) Yellowtail Sashimi The yellowtail is mediocre. It is slightly chewy and, therefore requires a bit of soy sauce to wash it down. (9/10) Eel Sashimi Similar to the eel in the Caterpillar Roll, it is sweet and delectable. If you haven't tried unagi and you're a little nervous, Midori would be a great place for you first-timers! read more

Yes the rolls are big here. But I'm not impressed by that. In fact, I don't care for it much. A regular Philadelphia roll is usually $6.95 at most places. Okay, pretty much every place from San Francisco to Austin. It consists of salmon, avocado, and cream cheese. Here, they put smoked salmon in it. Which about 30% of places that I have been to do. I always ask for then to swap it for regular salmon. I have NEVER been charged extra for that. Except at Midori. Where it is $2 extra. I asked for the Tuna Tower. The waiter told me that I shouldn't order it because it's for two people. I asked him if they had to-go boxes and he said yes but still did everything to convince me not to get the tuna tower-- the whole reason I even came to the place to begin with!! I always come by myself and the waitstaff hounds the crap out if me. They come by so frequently that you can't enjoy what you are eating. I WANT to love this place because it is right by my work and the culture of the sushi chefs is interactive and fun. I am going to continue coming and hope that my 3 visits already are isolated incidents. P.s. it is small and not great for groups. read more

Next on my tour of the good lunches near my new office off Riata Trace.... Midori was packed at 11:50a on a Wednesday. It seems that all the geeks in the Northwest tech corridor know all about this place and keep it hopping at lunch. The two sidewalk tables were full and the we snagged the last empty two-top just beyond the host stand inside. Lunch date ordered his traditional pork bulgogi bento box, while I had to try the Phoenix/Rock&Roll combo special. Dude, this is a LOT of food for lunch! With each of the specials, you get a starter cup of tasty miso soup, a tiny green salad with ginger vinaigrette , and then your massive lunch platter. The bento box had as much sushi as my own 12 piece combo, on top of the pork, rice, and vegetable side. If you can eat all of this and walk out under your own power, you have both my awe and fear. We both loved our meals, and my hot green tea served in a warm stone mug was perfect. My only real complaint, and it's a minor one, is that the Phoenix roll was totally drowned in the sweet-spicy, calorie-laden mayo sauce. I would enjoy it much more if I could get that sauce on the side and determine for myself how much to add (like with soy sauce or wasabi). I wonder if the chef would be offended if I asked for this accommodation.... I never want to get on the bad side of a sushi chef. read more

As a half-Japanese gal who has been on the other side of the globe and eaten a lot of good-quality raw fish, I gotta say that Midori is some of the best sushi I've had in Austin. Though the outside of the restaurant is unimpressive (small storefront in a strip center), the inside is nicely decorated, with comfortable booths and tables. The complimentary miso soup is tasty, but too small of a portion (I had one cube of tofu and a shaving of a scallion in my cup), but that's my only small complaint. The sushi itself was exquisite, fresh-tasting, cut beautifully, and paired with great sushi rice. The unagi (eel) roll was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The presentation of the dish was also lovely. Is it a little Americanized? Yeah. Of course. The staff all yell IRASHAIMASE! (welcome!) when you come in, which is authentic enough, I guess. If you want me to be nitpicky, there was a waitress who was wearing a weird "kimono" (quotations because it was a hybrid kimono/Chinese dress thing) that was folded the wrong way (if you're Japanese, you know exactly which way I'm talking about), which, had my mother been there, would have infuriated her... but, uh, yeah. All of the rolls were made well and tasted great! I thought the tempura was a little more on the not so crispy side but still A-OK! The pricing is very reasonable compared to say Soto or Tomo Sushi. The place is a little on the darker side lighting wise and the lunch crowd on Friday was quite full. Service is a bit hap-hazard. We had to call them over to start our order. The tables in the booths look like they have been cut off, seating is for 2 on each side but the table extends out only like 60% of the seat (I found this weird). The seats are pretty worn out. They give you 10% off the bill on non-lunch-special items if you complete the yelp review while you are there. They actually come around and read the review. While I think it's really nice to get the 10% off -- its way too much pressure and this is why the ratings are probably on the high side. I mean would you really complain about the food right while you are there unless it was really bad? Also I can't imagine this being kosher from the yelp rating side. First off, I'm not writing this review b/c they give you 10% off for a yelp review, I seriously loved this sushi and would not hesitate to say this is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Austin area. I guess b/c it's located in a strip mall it's hidden away. My waiter, Brian, was the friendliest, most attentive and sweet guy that I have ever encountered as a server myself. I mean, wow. My friend was late & my phone was dead. He was kind enough to charge my phone for me because I forgot my charger. He knew everything about the drinks on the menu and recommended the perfect Asian Pear Saki. He was so friendly, always smiling but not "fake". Let's just say I left him a tip way over 25%. We ate the Maryiln Monroe Roll and the Densentu Roll with Seaweed Salad. The sushi melts in your mouth. And yes, their rolls are like twice the size of the normal size sushi roll. I can't recommend the food enough. I can't wait to go back and try more nigiri and sushi and different rolls. For the price, you can't beat this place. Highly recommended. A+ for atmosphere. It's a small place, but have really cute booths and their chairs are not uncomfortable. read more

Unless you recently watched Finding Dory, there's always room in your stomach for sushi. I came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch around 12:30pm and the place was packed! We got seated pretty quickly however, at the sushi bar and got to watch the chefs hard at work. The ambience of the restaurant is very casual. The place itself isn't very large, but there were plenty of tables and each one was packed with hungry and satisfied customers. The Japanese décor was a nice touch, adding a bit more authenticity to the already authentic Japanese cuisine. They have lunch specials here ranging from bento boxes to sushi platters. The bento boxes ranged from $10 to $13 with specials such as fried pork, bulgogi (at a Japanese restaurant!), salmon, and chicken teriyaki. I ordered the salmon and it came with a salad, miso soup, two different rolls of sushi, a bean sprout salad, a mound of rice, salmon, and two pieces of nigiri. The salad was nice 'and light - just a small amount of dressing on the small salad. The miso soup was good, but nothing spectacular. The two rolls of sushi (one vegetarian and one with a mixture of crab and shrimp) was alright. The vegetarian one was pretty typical but the crab and shrimp sushi was less than stellar. This small roll (4 pieces) was drenched in a sweet sauce that overpowered the flavor of the actual filling. It wasn't bad, but it was difficult to taste the flavor of the sushi itself. The bean sprout salad was fresh but not too flavorful. The salmon with rice was delicious - a little sweet but a lot of flavor. You could tell the fish was fresh, something that is key for sushi restaurants. The nigiri - one salmon and one yellowtail - was alright at best. The yellowtail was a tad bit grainy, which was slightly disappointing. There were so many items in the box, however, that it was easy to forget the bad and devour the good. All in all, I would definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area and need a quick Japanese pick me up. It's not the best sushi restaurant in town, but it's definitely a great bang for your buck! The service is great and the wait time after you order is minimal. Good place to eat. Went there for lunch and we had a good experience. There is a free miso soup with every order and we had the tuna tartare for appetizer and it was very nice. Then we ordered three rolls total (the Marilyn Monroe roll, the philly roll, and a shrimp roll I forgot the name of) and the service was very speedy. The sushi is flavorful and it definitely fills you up. The price is very reasonable and the atmosphere is pretty good. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because there was nothing too exceptional about it. The place was almost empty when I went, and they had some kind of top 40 radio playing (Not necessarily a bad thing). Overall a nice place, definitely worth checking out read more
