I've never had a bad experience in the 5 years coming here. The customer service it top notch! One time I went here for my birthday with my girlfriend we ordered way more food then we could eat. The manager came out to talk to us because he was surprised that two people ordered so much food. I told him it was my birthday and I want all I could eat sushi. This isn't a review on the sushi, which I will try once I get this bad taste out of my mouth. Quite possibly the WORST Japanese food I've ever had. Beware when you walk into a Japanese restaurant and they're playing hip-hop. There was nothing Japanese about the restaurant except for the decor. They staff was very nice when we walked and was seated at a nice booth. They gave us a bowl of miso soup immediately. The soup was barely above a cool temperature. I thought it was tasteless when it was cold, it was more so after they warmed it up. Either they're using a cheap miso or they're really skimping on the quantity of miso. Either way, it was just a touch above flavored water. When the waiter asked why we didn't eat the miso, I told him it wasn't very good. AND HE AGREED! When they returned with the bowl of hot soup, my cold salad was stacked on top of the hot soup bowl. There's a lot people need to learn about food service. The salad dressing was orange juice, seasoned rice wine vinegar and sugar. Too much vinegar, no depth and very watery. We had Nabeyaki Udon and Beef Teriyaki. Both should be pretty simple to make. How can you make a bad beef teriyaki? Put it on a sizzling hot plate with a bunch of onions and cabbage and make the teriyaki sauce peppery. Seriously? The beef was drenched in some kind of thick sauce that tasted nothing like teriyaki. And it was served with 3 side dishes like a Korean restaurant. Really odd. The Nabeyaki Udon was the only thing we had that had a decent flavor, but it was poorly presented. First, they served the pot with the handle facing the person. Again with learning how to serve food. Second, the vegetables in the soup looked like they were just hacked with a cleaver instead of cut. I'm Japanese and could not in my wildest dreams consider this Japanese food. We've ordered food for take out three times before and today for my birthday we decided to come here because it's the best sushi in town but this time we actually sat down inside. It is a great place with a private seating throughout the location which is great for couples. Before we ordered we received complementary tofu soup and house salad, then we ordered two bento boxes (bulgogi and the spicy pork bulgogi), a sake bomb and house sake, food taste great and the music playing was good for lunch time. read more

The lunch special bento boxes here cannot be beat, my husband and I really like the bulgolgi and shrimp tempura. I also enjoy the tobiko nigiri, and unagi hand rolls. Haven't been here in a while due to poor service. Tried it again last night, the service was excellent, however I was not thrilled with the quality of fish. Best spot for lunch prices and size of rolls. Service is usually super quick. Has a tendency to be slightly sloppy on the rolls but it doesn't take away from the flavor and quality. Definitely my go to spot up north. I'm really basic when it comes to sushi, I rarely eat anything besides spicy tuna. read more

I really enjoyed the environment and vibe they were giving at the place, the waiter was quick to seat us especially during lunch time, I got a table for two and it was relatively quick. The place was pretty busy and the food came out really fast. We order some rolls and a bento but the serving portions were a lot smaller than I thought. I assumed it would be a bit more to fill my stomach but it wasn't the case. The rice was maybe about a spoonful and a half, I think they could've given a bit more but the taste was really good and would go again. Again, I'm just reviewing lunch. I thought this was a great lunch spot, until discovered Tomo. If you work up this way, and for some reason, your friends are tired of going to Tomo, Midori will work. You won't be disappointed. Unless you just ate at Tomo like the day before. Same sort of deal--the prices are excellent (9-12 for a lot o fish). The seating can sometimes be a little awkward. I went there once for an ill-defined "is this a date?" co-worker lunch. I never was sure, but sitting approximately 5 ft from him, made it distinctly less date-like. I do not always love sushi. I've only recently started eating non-vegetarian sushi, as I do not like fish/sea critters of any kind. However, when I find sushi I like, I crave it. Midori is one of those places for me. The rolls are HUGE. My husband and I can usually clear a few rolls at other places. Here? We get two different kinds and usually can't finsh them. Of all the ones I've tried, the Midori Boca Raton is my favorite. It's kind of crunchy, and very flavorful. The kid's plate is huge. Solid lunch place. I am one of those "geeks in the Northwest tech corridor" that Shannon B so kindly refers to, and I'm always in there when the doors open for lunchtime. A sushi or sashimi combo will run you $13-15 after tax and tip, but the fish is fresh and not fish-y smelling at all. The included miso and salad is nice, and the service is pretty quick. We visited this place with confidence, because of the raving reviews on Yelp. This large Korean-owned Sushi Restaurant looks small from the outside, unassuming- but once you enter, it's inviting because it is tailored to appeal to a Caucasian Austinite taste (with Japanese-themed eye-candy). Nothing wrong with that- we're in Austin after all, and this is a successful established business. But when we started to get our order, our confidence levels were not as high anymore. As sushi eaters with many years of experience in Japan and Los Angeles, we found Midori's sushi / sashimi fresh (enough), but kind of bland, all fish tasted kind of the same (pre-frozen, I guess). Nothing stood out. And in the end, the price was just a tiny little bit less expensive compared to some of the more established sushi favorites in Austin. Their cut-rolls were creative, which is the usual case with all Korean Sushi bars. A lot of cut-rolls with different appearances. But still these rolls were (to us) not as good as some cut rolls we had elsewhere. Like at Musashino for example. Check out my other sushi reviews. Because of the above conclusions, to me the Midori value is not that great, as the sushi and rolls are not that cheap here. Anyway, we really wanted to love this restaurant as much as the rest of you, but we don't think that we'll be returning soon. But we are happy that Midori has built such a remarkable reputation with the local foodies. Please don't hate us for giving you our honest opinion. I was excited to hear about this place because I live so close to it and the reviews are great. 400 something reviews and 4.5 stars?? It's got to be great right? Wrong! IT was the worst sushi I have ever had. I ordered to go and got a crunchy shrimp tempura roll and rainbow roll. I brought it home and opened it up and my fiance saw the sushi and immediately said he wouldn't eat it. I, however, was starving so I proceeded. None of it looked fresh and for a rainbow roll with sashimi on top-freshness and quality of the fish is key. The fish was tasteless, rubbery, and terrible. The california roll it sat on was predominantly rice with darkened avocado underneath. It was as though the rainbow roll sat outside for a few days in terms of its quality. I gave up on that after trying two pieces and went to the crunchy shrimp roll which also was huge because of the amount of rice on it. The tempura was not crunchy and in fact tasted soggy. The whole thing was terrible. I ended up throwing the sushi away even though I was hungry. This is worse than boxed sushi I've bought from the grocery store. I cannot believe this place has such great reviews. What makes it even worse is that I started to get stomach cramps after eating sushi that night. I will never understand how they have so many stars on Yelp. Yes, I love sushi and yes I'm picky with my sushi because I've had good sushi before. I will never come again. read more

I read tons of good reviews for Midori so my wife and I were eager to try it. We arrived around 6 pm for dinner and the place was nearly empty. This should have been our first clue for what was coming. We chose to sit at the sushi bar because we enjoy watching the sushi chefs work. The first thing I noticed was that most of the fish was pre cut. Not a good thing at all. The presentation was sloppy and the fish tasted as if it had been there a while, which was probably due to the fact that it had been cut long before we had arrived. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because of the friendly service from out server. read more

The food was good, the service was fair. But towards the end of our meal we felt really rushed. Granted it was 9:20 the place closes at 10pm, they never told us what time last call was. The server comes back to our table checks on things we ask to order another roll and he says "you might want to hurry up were closing up" pretty unprofessional of him, then we rushed to select another roll. Unfortunately wanting to order another roll right after we weren't able to, because the ticket was already on the table. After the check came back we signed it and tipped then he asked for the check and took away our soy sauce, sugar, and candle. Which was very strange, I've never felt more rushed at a restaurant before. Its misfortunate because the food was pretty good.
