I called Tim and left a voice mail over the weekend. He called back yesterday. Since I had the gasket needed for the repair work, he fit me in today! He was able to tackle it very quickly. And I believe he charged me just about an hours' worth of his time. Fair. He also adjusted the valves, great! And he noticed the exhaust manifold needs replaced as well as the spark plug cap. I'll get the parts and make another appointment for him to replace those. Tim was polite, professional, friendly, a good natured guy. There must be something about this block hosting good natured, competent mechanics as my favorite bicycle mechanic shop (Addison's Cycle Repairium) is butted up to Midtown Scooters on S Street. Tim was easy to get chatting about scooters and mechanics, he loves what he does. And I believe a bit of what he was telling me sunk in. Good stuff! His shop is on Rice Alley (no sign for the alley and store signs apparently on 23rd) which is halfway between R St and S St, on the 23rd side. My picture can help you recognize it. I had some questions and wanted to schedule a time to drop it off. I waited a couple days for a return call and after not hearing from anyone I took it somewhere else. I still have never heard from them. And yes the out going message confirmed I had the right number. Too bad. This guy is the most overqualified mechanic in the scooter industry! He's literally built rocket motors for NASA as well as race cars AND he's far less expensive than the dealership or any other shop I've seen. The only issue is the hours of operation seem to be based around his availability so be patient if he's not always available during the standard 9-5. read more

My scooter had just been repaired for a starting problem when it broke down again. The people who had serviced it before, while good, were not that familiar w/ Tank Scooters. I found Tim on craigslist and snap! He could pick up the scooter and found parts far more quickly than I thought. He found the problem, located parts (which is difficult), fixed the problem for a decent price. He explained (and showed me!) what the problem was. Advised some other possible fixes that may be needed in the future and had looked up the price on the part that may fail. Everything I could want in a mechanic. He'll tow, he's detail oriented, he can explain the problem, he looks over the entire scooter for safety. While there, I saw many scooters he was working on. My experience here: I walked in with my old tire still on the Vespa rim, and a new tire that I had purchased elsewhere. This super nice guy (must be the famous Tim) stopped working on a car to help me, I told him I needed my new tire installed on my Vespa rim, he told me the price and gave me a turn around time of 20 minutes and started working on it instantly. Now I know why this place has 5 stars My experience at another shop on L and 18th before coming here: There's an old man sitting on the ground. As I walk in, I give him a friendly head nod, he stares at me. I walk in and ask another person if they can replace my Vespa tire. This guy looked straight at the old man sitting on the ground, and the old man says he can get it done within 48 hours. The second guy walks out with paper work like I want their service. I understand if they're busy, but they just didn't really seem friendly. But hey... Being nice isn't a prerequisite to mechanic work; some people like myself just really appreciate a smile and friendly customer service. So I left and am so glad I found this place. I also love the ambience of this place, along with the friendliness. Awesome guy! Awesome service! I'm just glad he had the time when I dropped by. The guy works on million dollar race cars all over the world when he's not turning a wrench at midtown, so you KNOW he knows his stuff. Unbelievable Scooter Guy! You know the mechanic you always hope to find who is honest, fair, and trustworthy. When I first got my scooter and it needed the tires replaced along with routine maintenance, I took it into another local shop. That initial experience had me believing that scooter repairs and maintenance were very costly. Based on the cost of repairs I only could afford some of the work done and thought if repairs were this expensive it might be better to run the scooter into the ground and get a new one. I learned to do some repairs on my own when the gas line leaked and when I needed to replace the back tire I decided to call around and I'm so happy I did. Tim was a little hard to get a hold of because he is only repairing scooters part time, a few days a week. When he is working on scooters he is actually busy working instead of answering the phone. You want to call to let him know what you need and when you are coming. I'm so glad I took my scooter to Tim. Tim was charging a fair rate for the repair. He had the job done is less time than I was quoted by other shops. He looked over my scooter and went above and beyond on my service. I feel confident about the service that was done. Instead of running the scooter into the ground, I will go back to him for the routine and repair maintenance. read more
