I am so happy I found Midway Optometry. I was able to get an appointment the day after I called. Upon arrival I was greeted by Shelby who took my temperature and gave me sanitizer at the door. The office is very clean, seating is 6 feet apart to ensure social distancing, and most of all Midway Optometry offers a great selection of glasses. Check-in was smooth and paperless done via an IPad. During my exam Shelby thoroughly explained every machine and made me feel very comfortable through out. The equipment used is very modern I had never had an eye exam like I had at Midway Optometry. I've been to other optometry's where there is an eye air puff test that blows air into eyes to check pressure here there was none of that. I am amazed by how much has changed I also did not have to get my eyes dilated like I have had at other places. The machinery used here is top of the line. Shelby was awesome and explained every procedure you can tell the passion she has for helping others. Next, I saw Dr. Matthews. He is very professional and awesome guy! We connected over going to the same college, Go Bears! And both speaking Spanish. Dr. Matthews thoroughly explained the health of my eyes and addressed my concerns. I learned about retinol holes and learned so much about proper eye care. Finally, I met with Mayra who helped me choose new glasses. She suggested different styles and overall helped me find the right pair of frames. Mayra also ordered my contacts and helped me save big!! She gave me a rebate form for $200 off my contact lenses! How awesome! She is very friendly and professional and truly cares about making sure clients feel satisfied. It feels like family walking into Midway Optometry. I just called this optometrist and as the front office lady was talking to me all I could hear was a loud woman's voice talking to someone as if she was on the phone with me! I mentioned my insurance to the lady and tried to carry on a new patient scheduling of eye exam but first I had several questions. I have a Medicare advantage plan and I just had MediCal added to my coverage. I gave the lady my information and she told me I probably wouldn't be able to hear her read back my insurance information. I about fell off my chair to think that I wasn't important enough (due to the secondary ins or just because they don't care about me and being a new patient). I felt completely and utterly insulted. Whomever the lady was that was talking to a patient and overriding my call must not care about me either because nothing was done to remedy the situation. Maybe they have a very small office and receptionist and clinicians have to share space or something?? I gave my last name and insurance info to this office. The receptionist was already saying goodbye to me like she would rather lose a new patient and thats that. I feel she should have asked if she could call me back! Maybe she should just not answer office phone until it was more appropriate to talk. HIPPA policy made me hang up. I didn't want to hear a patients information if it were like that! If this was a fluke incident then they can call me back and try it again but I feel that will never happen. In closing, just saying: I have worked in the healthcare industry for years before I became disabled. I know that this slap in the face should have never happened in ANY scenario, especially the medical profession. read more

My first time visiting with the team this week at Midway Optometry was wonderful. The front office welcomed me warmly and I felt at ease right away. The exam is very thorough and comprehensive. I took tests that I have never had done before. Dawn was very patient at giving me explanations of what each test was as I was just fascinated by some of them. Dr. Matthews really took the time to help me and to give me thorough explanations of each of the test results. I was very comfortable and was able to have a good chat about my eye health and my overall health in general. After my exam, I asked Dawn & Hana for help in selecting new frames. They were so sweet and gave me some great recommendations. I have already been giving them glowing, if unsolicited, reviews when speaking about my recent eye exam. Hands down the best place for anything Optometry related in San Diego. When I walked in I was greeted with a very pleasant staff. They were very attentive and truly cared for every patient that walked through the door. I had such a great experience with Midway Optometry. Went there for my yearly Eye Exam, and it was clear that the entire staff has a passion for what they do. Dr. Matthews is full of knowledge, wonderfully friendly and very thorough. I've worn contacts and glasses for years, but my previous optometrist hadn't gone in that much detail about why my eyesight may be getting worse over time. I really appreciated the time he spent with me to get my prescription just right. The rest of the staff is great as well -- I mainly spoke with Shelby and Mayra, and they were both friendly and professional throughout the process of scheduling, conducting initial eye tests, navigating insurance and picking out a new set of glasses. From out of town and had my OVVO glasses come apart and found Midway as a dealer on the OVVO site. Called and Scott said bring them in. He fixed the broken pair and added new nose pads to my backup pair. Not a small task. Took about 20 minutes. No charge! All of the staff here are very pleasant and accommodating. The kind staff at Midway Optometry replaced the broken nose pieces in my husband's glasses even though we were visitors to town and not their clients yet. We travel frequently to San Diego so when I need an optometrist here in town, I will definitely go to them. The front area is clean and bright and they have a large selection of eye glass frames. I told her she should come see mine, as Dr. Prince was always fantastic with me! Sadly, I had heard she sold the practice after a family emergency. Dr. Prince is an excellent optometrist and very professional. She has a very soothing voice and was the first optometrist to not prescribe me glasses that gave me a headache when I first started to wear them. She actually listened to me and gave me glasses that made me see the clearest I've ever seen my whole life. Very excellent optometrist with great people skills. Highly recommended. All the workers are extremely nice and answered my questions fully. They have so many different options for glasses ranging in all prices. I haven't had an eye exam for almost 8 years and I'm so glad I chose this place to go. They have newer equipment that doesn't blow in your eye and doesn't dilate your eyes making the exam easy yet thorough. Doctor Matter was very nice and informative. Just wanted to say what a wonderful experience I had here. I unfortunately broke my glasses and was wondering around with an older pair with the wrong prescription. On my way over to the book store I decided to pop in and ask a few questions. My insurance changed and my typical eye doctor was no longer in network,but the midway optometrist was in network with VSP. Man am I beyond glad that my change in insurance made me search out a new eye doctor . From the moment I walked in I was greeted promptly and professionally. The office smelled clean, the glasses display had a variety of frames that were up to date style wise . Both of the ladies at the front desk were cheerful and informed about my insurance and what would be available to me ( copays, specials on frames and rebates for contacts) they were able to set me up with an appointment the next day. I came in the following day and was greeted with the same welcoming demeanor. The young lady who did my retinal scan was really thorough and explained what each machine was doing. When I met Dr. Mathews he was absolutely amazing. Seriously warm and inviting and non judgmental that my eye exam was overdue...instead he kindly reminded me of the importance of staying on top of it even allowing me to take a photo of the image of the back of my eye / optic nerve. This was important because I will be moving internationally and the image could help my next eye doctor on the state of my optic nerve next year. During my exam we chatted and had such a natural conversation. Dr. Mathews is a people person and good judge on his patients comfort level. The exam was easy ,comfortable and by the end I was given a trial pair of contacts and and the correct prescription for my eyes. Man oh man when I popped my new contacts in i realized just how much my vision had changed. The lense he recommended over mu last lense worked out great. I was on a bit of a time crunch and thet allowed me to come back a few days later to check the fit and performance of my new contacts. I absolutely loved them and once given the clear from Dr. Mathews bought a whole year supply plus 2 extra boxes. They were even kind enough to schedule my lenses to be shipped to their office after overhearing me comment about how I hope that porch pirates didnt steal my box. That was an extra relief in its self to not have to worry about a stolen package of contacts. Super pleased all around and if you have Tricare and or VSP really check this office out. Its located right across from military housing so no excuse if you cant see just walk right across the street I might even swing by for my yearly exam when I come back stateside to visit family. I've been going to see Dr. Deborah Prince for a few years now and she is a very friendly and helpful eye doctor. She patiently answers your questions and gives very good advice. I went to see her to determine if I can get Lasik. As someone who got it done herself, she was very helpful in describing the procedure and recommending eye surgeons. The location is great if you live or work in the Point Loma area, as it's right above the bookstore on Rosecrans st. It's no longer on Midway drive, as Yelp has it. The only bad thing I could say is that the staff can be a little slow to schedule. But this gets made up by actually being able to be seen by the doctor at your appointment time. I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes. read more

With my lifestyle my glasses don't last longer than a year. I got my glasses here in July and already they I've damaged them to the point they were no longer straight and was missing nose pad. I remembered my glasses came with a warranty so I came in to see if I can use it. Once I arrived I was delighted to find that instead of using my warranty they had extensive knowledge on eyeglass repair and even fixed my glasses there and replaced my nose pads for free. Dr. Matthews was very professional and personable. He was ready to answer questions and he appears to really go out of his way to educate his clients.
