I bought 2 pairs of lens from this place. The clerk said that they had just changed labs... Anyway, both pairs of lens came back a bit off and were hurting my eyes. This never happened with my old lens from LensCrafters. They admitted one defective pair was due to mistake from an assistant, the other was unexplained. I told them I was not interest in another pair and that I wanted a refund. They said they have a no refund policy...Why am I not surprised! These people are the best. Doctor Matt took the time to thoroughly explain every test that had been run and the results. He was kind to my toddler and swapped service stories with my husband as well. The office staff was stellar. They welcomed my sometimes noisy and boisterous two year old to play with some office toys and even let him try on a few pairs of glasses for fun. Stephanie let me browse and then reviewed the selection of glasses, pointing out budget friendly alternatives and ultimately helping me find the perfect frames based on my style and face. Jaqueline also helped in the final frame selection and final transaction. These ladies were so funny and kind. It was almost like shopping with a set of girlfriends. First, I would caution anyone wanting to come to this office for their vision care to click on the link for the reviews that the yelp software did not show as helpful. They are very helpful and show a truer picture than the glowing 5 stars shown at first. My experience. I first went to see them when they were on Midway drive. I needed new glasses as well as bifocals for the first time. That first set of glasses were worth 5 stars. I could not have been happier. When I returned for new lenses a year or so later, they were in the top story of the Bookstar location. I was charged a hefty sum for the exam, frames and lenses but I did not get what I paid for. When I picked that set of glasses up, they didn't seem right, but I was told to try they out over the weekend and see if I adjusted to them. Needless to say I did not. When I finally made it back in, I asked them about the numbers on the lenses. Shouldn't they line up? They told me they should. However they didn't. The staff agreed that the lenses were wrong, blamed it on the lab and sent them back out for new lenses. Someone should have checked that before giving me the new glasses. In any case, I did eventually receive new glasses, but I still wasn't 100% happy. When the frames broke, I went back in for a new set of frames and lenses. I explained my dissatisfaction with the previous set of glasses and they agreed to give me a discount on the new ones. That seemed fair. When I picked up the new pair of glasses, they didn't seem correct again. I needed to see so I once again took them to see if it was just me. It wasn't. I went back in and the staff re-measured my lenses and agreed they were wrong;. They would re-order new ones and I could swap out the lenses when they came in. After waiting, calling waiting, calling I finally asked them to call the lab and find out where my lenses were. The lab had not even started to make them because they were waiting on the frames. The order was just for the lenses. If I hadn't insisted that they call I might never have received new lenses at all. When the new lenses came in, I went in to have them put in the frames. They were much better than the previous set of lenses, but still weren't quite right. I couldn't see properly without moving the frames down on my nose. That's not what I paid for. I paid for a set of glasses that I could actually use. This week I finally went back in one more time and was told I could come in a few days later to see Dr. Prince. I wanted her to test my vision with the glasses on. The office called and told me I would not be seeing Dr. Prince, but that a different person would help me. Not acceptable. I asked for a phone call from Deborah Prince and have not yet received a call back. I don't expect to. They took my money, billed my insurance and left me on my own. I did go into the office to get copies of my prescriptions. Optometrists are required to give you a copy of your prescription, but they never did. I was able to get the info and I can clearly see an error. The axis of my left eye went from 180 to 001. Really? A decrease of 179? The axis of my right eye went from 167 to 172, an increase of 5. No wonder my glasses continue to be messed up. Needless to say, my next rant will be a complaint to the state board. It's very sad since that first set of glasses were awesome. Oh Well. read more

Short Version: Possibly one of the best appointments with a Doctor I've ever had. On time, friendly, caring, patient, and no issues with billing. Long Version: I had my appointment with Midway Optometry on my lunch hour today, and the people that work there absolutely made my day. I scheduled my appointment just the day before, and got the exact time I wanted during my lunch hour. The Office Manager called me to confirm my insurance an hour or so after I scheduled the appointment online. I was able to fill out all my history online, so I didn't have to fill out any forms in the office. I arrived to my appointment today 15 minutes early, and they saw me as soon I walked in. Dr. Matthews and the Office Manager Dawn Holcomb were absolutely amazing. Dawn spent about 5 minutes checking my eyes with the various machines, and the Doctor immediately followed up by explaining what he was looking at. There was NO waiting period! He made it a learning lesson as we looked at the images of the back of my eyes, and it was very clear he is 100% passionate and excited about his work. He then checked my eyes with the lens machine thing and told me I was a prime candidate for laser eye surgery (but also recommended against it because I'm only -1.25/-1.5). I let him know that when I was in college, I had worn my contact lenses so much, that I had gotten several small eye infections, and my eye doctor at the time forbid me from wearing contacts ever again. I guess that's what happens when you only sleep 4-5 hours a night for 5 years, and spend most of your time staring at a computer screen! It's now 4 years later, and I've been wearing glasses ever since, but dreaming of going back to contacts. Dr. Matthews checked my eyes and said they look perfectly good now, so they have repaired. He explained to me that contacts have improved over the years to allow for a better flow of oxygen to the eye, so I should never have the same issues I had before. Not only that, but my prescriptions have improved by an entire 1 point in each eye since the last time I was checked! He informed me that the infections and irritation from my old contacts were probably causing a swelling of my eye, causing my prescription to be worse. So now my prescription isn't as bad, and I walked out of the office with 3 months of contacts (holy crap contacts are expensive, but my insurance covered the 3 month supply and I don't plan on wearing them everyday). The Doctor was even nice enough to bend my glasses back into place and tighten them. I'm wearing my contacts now, and back at work just an hour and ten minutes later :D. I plan to go back to their office in a few months to get a new pair of glasses. They seemed to have a great selection and prices that compare to places like Costco. I only wish that every experience I've had with a doctor and doctor's office could be held to this standard. They seriously brightened my day!!! Thank you for excellent service! read more

I found Dr. Matthews because I work in the same neighborhood and his location is close to mine. The office is very unassuming, but is nice, efficient and up to speed with technology. I've been meaning to write a review for here for awhile and keep forgetting haha! So, I just want to say that is one of the MOST military friendly optometrists I e ever visited. After years of seeing the same eye doctor in Oceanside, he retired and I had to search for a new one. Based on the recommendation of a friend I decided to give this office a try and I wasn't disappointed! I was also able to get to see what the doctor was seeing in my eye, which I'm a nerd over that stuff haha, and found out that my eye health was much better than I feared after not seeing an eye doctor in a couple years. If you are looking for an optometrist who will take the time to thoroughly explain the tests and reasons for why he recommends certain treatments, then you definitely need to give Midway Optometry a try. I was absolutely impressed with my first experience here (so much so that I am writing my first yelp review after being a user for many years) and will be back without hesitation. Dr. Matthews is just a really lovely human being: genuine, kind, sense of humor and took the time to ask me questions and get to know not just my eyes but me as a person. I was impressed by his broad base of knowledge and his willingness to casually share this throughout my appointment- I learned some neat things about eyes and got to see my eyeballs on the computer (I'm a little bit of a science nerd, so I loved this). He figured out I have 'dry eyes' and gave me a good, diverse plan on how to remedy this over time- something no other optometrist has ever identified to date, probably because they have not been quite as thorough. I got the sense that he truly enjoyed his work (apparently he came out of retirement to open his 2nd successful practice) and that his priority is being of service to others. The other elements of the office visit were equally pleasing. Prompt service, clean and welcoming environment, and adorably real, friendly, and helpful desk staff who seemed to enjoy interacting with everyone. They were kind enough to tolerate and even try to assist my hopeless indecision as I struggled to select new frames and didn't even tell me that I was holding them up past closing because they were too sweet & professional. If you are looking for a solid optometrist who clearly cares about his field, his people, and his practice, I would say Dr. Matthews is the place to start. read more

Unfortunately, I don't like to give service professionals poor ratings, however, the results of my visit prompt me to address it. First off, Dr. Prince is a seemingly nice woman, but nice doesn't cut it when someone's vision is involved. My first issue was calling to inquire about her practice. She called my insurance company and Immediately confirmed my visit with her (meaning she put in a claim right after speaking with me over the phone, no visit yet). Second issue, her equipment seems a bit dated. But if it could do the job, then I wouldn't have a problem but I have a pretty strong astigmatism. She was unable to prescribe proper contact lenses or glass lenses. My right eye prescription is so shotty, the blur Is ridiculous. Plus no follow up call from her office. SMH... Can't recommend her and wont return. Luckily, my optometrist in NJ gave me a prescription from a year ago. read more

Dawn is always very nice and professional and takes the time to help and assist with any needs I may have. Very nice staff. They also have a good selection of eyewear. Downside is the glasses were ordered with wrong lenses size a couple of times after verifying correct size each time. Appears the lab used is not the best. The glasses came with plastic protectors on hinges too long 3 times. The glasses I ordered on line were not delivered like this. My daughter was seen at Midway Optometry by Dr Matthews. The location address is on Rosecrans which does have some street parking, but behind the shopping center is an additional parking lot. Everyone at the front desk was so warm and welcoming. It was our first visit so we filled out our information on an iPad instead of the usual paper forms you are given. While we waited a short while to be seen, I perused the glasses on display. The selection was very classic and trendy. I also noticed a few toys tucked away for kids to play with while waiting, you can tell this a thoughtful place. As the appointment began, they asked my daughter if she'd like her height marked on their wall so they can show her how much she has grown each year, love this! Dr. Mathews was very kind and warm. He really took his time with my daughter and carried on a charming conversation while we were there. I am so happy with our visit today at Midway. read more

I was very pleased with the care I received from Dr. Matthews. I highly recommend this office. I have suffered from blepharitis for over a year and had been to my dermatologist, my eye doctor & urgent care to seek help. They all did their best, but my eye condition worsened. Even though I followed all of their suggestions on using eyelid scrubs, sterile eye wash solution, hot compresses & a small fortune on prescription eye drops & eye ointments. I also spent a fortune on homeopathic treatments that brought no improvement or comfort to my condition. Not only did I have no relief, my condition was getting worse and greatly affecting the quality of my everyday life. The eye watering, burning, redness, inflammation, swelling, constant tearing, crusting & itchy, foreign body sensation was unbearable. I had to stop wearing make up and felt uncomfortable at work as my appearance was not as well groomed or put together as required for my industry. I continued to do research on this condition and learned of a new treatment called Blephex to treat blepharitis. I found only a handful of doctors offering this in San Diego. I was fortunate that Dr. Matthews was in my area so I decided to give his office a call. Right away, I felt I was going in right direction as my initial phone call was answered by a caring, articulate & helpful young lady. Imagine how thrilled I was that I was able to be seen that day. I figured I would meet with the doctor for a consultation and hopefully he would agree I was a candidate so I could schedule a Blephex treatment. Dr. Matthews took his time and was very thorough in my appointment. He saw how much discomfort I was in & actually ended up doing my treatment right then. It was not as uncomfortable as I had imagined and though it's only been a few days I feel I'm already experiencing great improvement. I am truly grateful to Dr. Matthews. I'm excited about the treatment I received & the care his office gave. I'm mostly happy to have found a new doctor for myself and family and friends. I understand blepharitis isn't something that always goes away. I may have to learn to live with this, as all cases vary. I don't normally write reviews but I had such a great experience here. The staff up front was so fun and helpful. I haven't had my glasses replaced in so long I needed some advice, and since I was there alone the staff gave so much help finding the right pair. We also had a laugh doing my glaucoma test and got it done with a little extra help thanks to them! Dr. Matthews was also so kind and informative of my new eye prescription, so I not only had a proper exam but understood it as well. Dr. Michael Matthews and his staff are the very best I have ever experienced in my 51 years of using optometry services. Dr. Matthews very recently took over Midway Optometry and is obviously VERY committed to his patients and to establishing an excellent reputation. After visiting several optometrists and being increasingly frustrated with my failure to get my vision satisfactorily dialed in, I went to him upon the advice of Dr. Adam Dao, a new ophthalmologist in Point Loma. I live in Eastlake, far, far away from Point Loma, so it's obvious I was getting very desperate to get to the bottom of my deteriorating vision problems. Dr. Matthews spent quite a bit of time thoroughly listening, then examining, then explaining, and finally counseling me with his recommendations. He nailed it and warned me that my health plan would NOT want to cover cataract surgery at my young age (59) and would make me wait many years as my vision further deteriorated. This diagnosis was confirmed by Dr. Dao (now my favorite ophthalmologist ever, for the same reasons). I asked Dr. Matthews to please write a letter on my behalf, as I love my career, have children in college, drive a LOT, and must have it corrected. He very kindly took the time to successfully compose a letter to my health plan who quickly approved my surgery without any hassles whatsoever. I paid extra for Symphony lenses and went from progressive glasses of 10 diopters to no glasses at all, 20/20 at all mid-long distances and 20/25 when reading!! Needless to say, this is a medical miracle which has added untold freedom and enjoyment in the activities of my daily life, and many productive years to my career. Dr. Matthews is that very rare blend of great experience, a truly friendly, empathatic attitude, and a sincere dedication to the betterment of his patients. This shows in the attitude of his office staff, who are likewise friendly and very helpful. He is now the optometrist I recommend to everyone. Go nowhere else. Thanks! read more

I have been going to Midway Optometry for a little over two years now and wanted to share how great everyone at this office is and how much I appreciate their terrific care of me and my eyes! First, they have all the latest technology which makes the process easier and way more informative. Second, they combine the high tech stuff with good old fashioned customer service and knowledgeable advice. The process is quick and efficient and they genuinely care about you. One time I went in and Dr. Matthews had found a pair of frames from one of his vendors that thought "looked like something I would like". How remarkable that he would think of me and share that info! My first experience with Midway Optometry was to purchase glasses and contacts only. I had my eyes examined by another Doctor and for insurance purposes was led to Dr. Prince's practice. When the time came for me to have my eyes examined for contact lenses, I chose Dr. Prince because I wasn't very pleased with my previous eye care provider. Dr. Prince's staff was very warm and welcoming and I wasn't as nervous as I usually am. Meeting Dr. Prince was actually a joy...she asked my concerns and addressed the issues and other topics that were age related. She was VERY professional, caring and really helped me find the right contact lens for my issues. I was impressed with her concern and eagerness to help me. This is the very first time I have ever written a review but I feel compelled to do so since my experience was such a poor one at Midway Optometry. I went for an annual visit to update my prescription on my contact lens and asked for the same monovision lens that I have worn for the past 12 years. When I picked up my lens, Dr. Prince said that she and the lab technician decided I would be happier with multifocal lens. I didn't think the change was a big deal but as I was leaving the office, they told me I owed a hefty sum which was three times more than the monovision lens. They were about to close and were hurried so I just gave my credit card thinking that my insurance company could correct the overpayment and reimburse me. Then as I was driving home, I remembered that my last Optometrist in Chicago had given me the option to purchase the multifocal lens but divulged the added cost and even recommended that I not go that route due to the added cost. Now I was mad - I called to speak with Dr. Prince the next day but she would not accept my call and I had to speak with the Office Manager. I explained the situation and asked to exchange the lens for the ones I originally wanted and thought were ordered. She said she would speak with Dr. Prince and call me back. I did not receive a call back and followed up the next day and I was told that there was nothing they could do about my situation and even said that there was only a $20 difference. I proceeded to call my insurance company and they too tried to persuade the Dr. to correct the situation but were unsuccessful. Midway Optometry lied and told my insurance company that they had indeed told me about the added cost and had thoroughly explained everything to me prior to ordering the lens. I truly cannot believe that I have had to spend so much time in trying to resolve this incident and feel so misled. If you decide to go to this clinic, I advise you to get everything in writing on the first visit as even my co pay was incorrectly billed. Dr. Prince appears to be a young Doctor and I question how she will grow her business when she clearly is not above board with her patients. read more

I was so nervous I wasn't going to find a good eye dr when I moved to this city, but I did and I am forever grateful! You are treated like family from the moment you walk in. I had major issues with wearing contacts for so many years, my eyes would water and burn constantly making it almost impossible for me to even drive. Dr. Matthews recommended a new brand, I wasn't familiar with, that is made up of mostly water and I have not had one issue since!!! I can finally go thru the day without pain and discomfort !
