Ed transformed our front yard into a beautiful drought-tolerant landscape. He removed our eye-sore lawn and overgrown plants, and replaced them with an artistic arrangement of flowering plants, large boulders, ground cover, and an artificial dry riverbed. Let me tell you, after hiring Midwest landscape to do a drought tolerant landscape for my parkway, I can honestly say that sometimes there is a delay in communication, however any delay is well worth it! Ed worked within my budget, gave suggestions as the project went along, and did a great quality job. The benefit of using Midwest landscape is that you have the owner doing the work and he takes pride in his work. In 2003, Ed expanded our little fountain into a magnificent 11'x4'x3' fish pond with waterfall in the front yard. As my dad points out, the pond gives life to our house and makes it more "living." The pump Ed installed had worked 24x7 and finally stopped its 13-year service in early Feb this year. I contacted Ed and scheduled an appointment to evaluate the problem. He kept his promise and came in 2 days. He cleaned all the filters, volcanic rocks and bag, and even removed a few pounds of tree roots from the skimmer. Most important, he did several tests with the pump and concluded that the pump needed to be replaced. Through emails, Ed gave us quotes on an EasyPro TH pump and other materials we needed. Since the last pump was manufactured by Aquascape, we asked him to find another Aquascape pump instead. Unfortunately, the model we had was discontinued. So, we decided to get the closest model -- AquascapePRO 3000. Since we had not done any cleaning for the past few years, a few inches deep of mud was accumulated at the bottom of the pond. Ed returned to do a major clean up and installed the new pump for us. He had definitely rejuvenated our pond and made it look so beautiful again! Unfortunately, the new pump is far more powerful than our original 1500 pump. The water level inside the skimmer dropped swiftly. Ed shared with us different options and started with the one cost us the least. Although he was occupied by a huge project in Moorpark, he found his time to drive over to La Crescenta to help us seal the possible leaking areas, and then came back to install a ball valve to slow down the water flow. Problem solved!!! We trust Ed's expertise, professional services, and honest business manners. He gave us exact quotes in the emails and charged us the same amounts when the jobs were done. He also went beyond what we requested, just like bringing us some water irises to balance the ecosystem of the pond and charcoal to clear the "tea" color of the water. Personally, I set up this Yelp account because I wanted to give Ed a fair feedback. Yes, you do need some patience for his service. This is an one-man business. It does take time for him to evaluate, research, organize his orders, drive to the suppliers to pick up materials, and travel from client to client to complete his projects. Anyway, I contacted Midwest early last week for an appointment for a quote on July 3 from 10-11 AM. However, no one ever showed up nor did I receive a call notifying me of any cancellation. I sent an email inquiring about Midwest's services and thought it was a good sign that Ed responded the same evening and asked to set up an appointment at 10am the coming Saturday (about five days later) for a consultation. I responded and indicated the date and time worked for us and asked him to call me if anything came up. That Saturday before 10am, I hung around the house and waited. And waited. And waited. I called Ed's cell phone around the half hour mark but he did not answer so I left a message. I also sent him an email. He was a no-show. Ed finally responded to my email late Saturday afternoon. He apologized and said he was caught up in another job and did not pay attention to his phone. He asked if we could set up another time in the coming week and asked for my availability. While I was skeptical, I figured I'd give him a chance so I thanked him for his apology and said I would be available the coming Monday or Tuesday. I. NEVER. HEARD. BACK. FROM. ED. and it's been almost a week since I last emailed him. Really? I'm not sure what the problem is but that is about the most unprofessional conduct I've ever experienced. I had leaking sprinkler and contacted Ed based on Yelp reviews. He responded the same day amidst a busy schedule and spent the time to troubleshoot my problem with me. Ed arrived with a smile and we got right down to business. He looked at my system, tightened a leaking sprinkler, and taught me how to adjust it if my problems persisted. He also went the extra mile and presented me with more options how to make my irrigation more efficient and told me exactly where to get the materials at a discount supply shop nearby. Ed didn't try and sell me anything off his truck or "upsell" me into getting things I didn't need. His expertise only cost me $25 and I believe it was worth more than that. I was referred to Ed by a landscape designer. Ed was really the first landscaping contractor to respond to my project request of the 5 or 6 I contacted. It seems like it's very hard in general to get them to respond, and to then get one to respond and it be a good one like Ed is was a big relief. Outside of a couple of scheduling mixups, I was very pleased with Ed. He's a hard worker, does quality work and is very friendly. He listens to what you want out of your project and gives good ideas, rather than trying to force you into doing things that would break your budget. One of the things I really like about Ed is his versatility. He stained and did concrete repairs, laid crushed rock, retro fitted the sprinkler system I inherited with the house I purchased into a drip system, and planted shrubs and sod. He was also willing to do plant/tree removal if necessary. It's nice to be able to find someone that has the skillset and is willing to do all of those things themselves rather than sub-contract out. I prefer having one person to work with and have over at my house rather than randon sub-contractors I haven't met. The project came out great, and Ed actually came by after and located a sprinker head that had been incased in concrete and replaced it. WOW! Where to start. My husband and I contacted Ed to install new sod in our front yard. He was a huge help helping us from start to finish. Ed took on my Metropolitan Water District and Irvine Ranch Water District Rebate Program Project. He had the best bid. I found him very knowledgeable about the water saving programs, native and low water plants, and the special irrigation methods. The project included removing 859 square feet of grass and replaced it with native plants and water recovery rock creek. He installed the colorful native plants that also support humming birds, butterflies, bees and other species. Finally the installed watering system focused on low water usage that will be appreciated when paying future water bills. The Home Owners Association was involved and was supportive of the project. My neighbors had only good comments about the final project. What I liked most is he does the work himself, has an old fashion pride of workmanship, which makes adjustments on the project very easy. I was impressed when he made all my deadlines and has followed up on additional questions as my expertise develops with the new landscape. read more

I found MIDWEST LANDSCAPING on the Internet. I read the "Yelp" reviews and found one negative and five positive. I always read the negative ones first. This will determine if I even want to move forward with my quest. Ed's negative review stated he took 9 months to do a very small backyard job replacing a few sprinklers and plants. However, I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt. The customer would not recommend him. Having said that here's my experience. I spoke with Ed once on the phone and communicated twice via emails. We confirmed an appointment time on Monday, 6/9 for the following Thursday, 6/12 between 4-6PM, just three days later. I rearranged my busy schedule to be home for this meeting. This was for an estimate on a complete new front yard including new sod, Palms, plants and a sprinkler system with an automatic timer. If the estimate was within my budget I was going to have the backyard done as well. Well, Thursday came and gone with no sign of Ed, the person I had spoken with previously on the phone and owner of Midwest Landscaping. No consideration for my time, no email, no courtesy phone call, no nothing, He was a NO SHOW! You be the judge. As for me, I wouldn't use him now if the price was FREE! We made an appt about a week in advance, and by the time the date rolled around, he was two hours late. He said he got stuck at another job and there was no cell service. We met Ed at a home show in Costa Mesa. After talking with several other landscape architects and contractors we decided to give Ed a try. Like some of the other reviews here, we had some miscommunication and confusion getting started. HOWEVER, once we got together everything went GREAT and we're glad we waited to work with Ed. He listened carefully to all our comments and came up with a design that really matched what we were looking for and fit our budget. He asked about potential plans for other areas (back and side yards) and took those into account with his design. It was significantly less expensive for his design and drawings than any of the others we talked with. Ed showed up as promised and worked hard, always ending his day by discussing what was accomplished, what came next and how the scheduled looked going forward. He is very knowledgeable and willing to share his information and suggestions. He is also very easy to talk with and work with. We had heavy rains intermittently during the job which caused some reasonable delays, and Ed also had to do follow-up at other job sites. Unlike some other contractors we've worked with, he communicated clearly when there were delays, gave us an updated schedule and came through as promised. Ed kept the price lower by using younger, smaller plants. He designed and installed a very efficient irrigation system that will keep our water consumption very low. We're just waiting for some of the ground covers to fill in now. Otherwise, we couldn't be happier! The sprinkler was having issues with pumping water, which needed replacing the vavle system. At the same time, replaced a few heads with more water efficient sprinklers, and capped off unnecessary ones. Overall the experience has been pretty good. Overall outstanding and we were very happy and satisfied with our choice to use Ed. We had Ed do the landscaping after getting the design from a landscape designer. He did a great job. Very knowledgeable and listened to our ideas. Also had great suggestions on things we had not thought about. We put in native/drought tolerant plants and redid our irrigation with a combination of drip lines and microspray. We have an area for vegetables that he was able to put on it's own irrigation station so it can be watered more regularly than the CA natives. Ed is a nice guy but is NOT RELIABLE. We hired him this past summer to work on our small courtyard (sprinkler, vegetable garden beds, and planting). He quoted 2 weeks timeframe to finish the work but actually took him 10 weeks. He said he'd be at our house on certain days and time but he either showed up 1-2 hours late or not show up at all. He sometimes didn't even have the courtesy to call to cancel when we have a set time to meet. It was a mistake from my part, being flexible. What really got me upset and decided to write this review is that in his contract, he guaranteed his entire work for 3 months post installation. Water sprinklers he installed broke very soon after. The materials and parts that he used are so flimsy and needs a constant adjustment (I mean weekly). In fact, some sprinkler heads aren't working for a few months now. On top of that, the few plants he planted died a week or two after. The maple trees he picked out was half-dead. I asked him why they looked that way. His reason was just a wind-burn and assured that they would do fine once they are planted. NOT TRUE. They haven't grown or looked any different at all. They have been planted for 4-5 months now. The vegetable garden beds he put together didn't produce much and in fact, most plants (80% of herbs, chilly, tomatoes) are dead now. The soil he put in there look so sandy and I questioned him often if the soil was right for the vegetable garden beds. He assured me the soil was premium and right for the gardening. Anyhow, I've been trying to call him to stop by the house to take a look at his work. It's been 3 months now. He still hasn't showed up. Initially, he agreed to stop by in a week or so. Then he was busy and couldn't make it. Then, he asked me to read up on the Western gardening book. I said I don't have time to read (have two young toddlers, pregnant, and working full-time). Now, he is not even returning my phone calls or texts. So, watch out folks! Don't make the mistake I made in hiring him. read more

Most often when you deal with contractors, patience is the name of the game. Let's simply say time management is not often their strength. However, it's ultimately about the quality of the work. Once he got focused, Ed did real good work. He clearly knows his stuff especially putting in drought-resistant plants, matching irrigation system and lighting.
